I'm so glad they changed most of the character's designs they don't look bad but most of this looks like a cheaper version of KanColle, and the newer designs that we have now truly feel like Azur lane style or at least thats how I feel.

Kancolle has this weird feeling of every characters only trait being their hair color so its good that AL keeps away from that in every way
There's a story that some of these artworks where made half-heartedly on purpose by the artist Manjuu hired. It seems the artist just thought about Azur Lane as just some third-rate copy of Kancolle and it being more successful both in Japan and overseas being a chinese-originated game hurt his pride or something. Manjuu noticed the art was not of the expected quality and the artist even admitted to it, then they changed everything for what we have now

@@Juimimi oh I know what you are talking about, I think it was something about the artist trying to do a half-ass job because Azur lane was competing with his favorite gacha that I think warship girls, there is a full Reddit post on that topic and it's pretty interesting actually.

Man, some of the girls' riggings were a whole lot smaller in their original art. Chikuma, Nagato and the Shokaku sisters really had tiny riggings
Also Indy-chan only got the least change

Honestly prefer the old Hood's design for that small golden heart shaped detail thing on her dress. Makes her more elegant, even if it's just a tad bit.
and the longer, more frilly skirt makes her more british

Iirc the reason Colorado,Maryland and West had their designs changed was that the devs and their artist got into an argument and they didnt feel like using that artist's designs after that so those 3 were changed. I wanna say thats also the reason we got the rerun version of FW but i honestly cant remember
The artist was salty and was convied azur lane was a copy of another ship girl game and made their designs shitty on purpose so they were replaced
ou know what surprising that it was never covered on the Wikipedia but was covered on TV tropes and I think I read a similar incident with nagato

Mikuma's design is actually a fanart from her chibi avatar, Manjuu bought the design and slap a horn to replace the ears.

Maryland, no doubt, best previous design.
Also, for the most part, I believe Devs made a right call to recall some artworks and exchange them with new ones, but some ideas in my opinion were worth keeping in final game (Indianapolis, Mikuma & Mogami in particular). 🤔

Maryland probably got changed due to the strict censorship in China. She was released long before the devs give the shipgirls 2 separate designs after all.

Note: On CN servers, if you acquire Colorado, WV and Maryland before their art change, you are able to switch their arts between the New and Original ones.
Sovetsky Soyuz also gets a new design. She was originally closer to Rossiya.
I love old Kirishima, Chikuma, Mogami and PoW designs. But their current ones are good too.
I think they have too many torpedoes for their own good and could get detonated if a bomb hits

I love new designs. The "original" looks strongly inspired in kancolle. And I love the sense of each kanzen have the own personality :D
Because they were pretty much KC rippofs, the original artist was a KC fanboy and got salty after learning that AL was getting popular against his favorite shipgirl game

PoW's original looks way too energetic and idol-ish. I prefer the stoic PoW

I have question about Kirov isn’t the original is different character? Because in her first trailer there was a reflection of her original.

Also, I was able to tell a hentai doujin wasn’t Kantai Collection immediately...

with the first three it looked like a cheaper, Korean or Chinese copy of Kantai Collection
with Chikuma, Shoukaku and Zuikaku, it clearly looks like Kantai Collection
Haruna, Hiei, Kirishima and Kongou : same, but mostly the character.
PoW: also looked like a character straight out of Kantai Collection
Didn’t know there were other ships with a different design in the past. Only one I knew of was Chikuma since you faced her in the early chapter stages.
I was playing called "Crosswave" on PC back then, these characters deserve a touch! If you relate to that game on PS4, Switch, and Steam, this is a perfect change.

Early models were sorta Kancolle-ish. Glad Azur Lane found its own identity afterwards. Now it has reached the point where many of the girs here are more well known than their KC counterparts.
Seeing the old designs is interesting. You can really see how much ... /inspiration/ they pulled from KanColle, but with that added touch of fantasy it becomes pretty solid character design, and our beloved shipgirls.
Prince of Wales's new design is a great improvement
Although they couldve used the old art for the HMS Anson since shes the final remaining KGV yet to be added
Just because little known fact, Nagato's art change is actually the same artist and is part of the lore. She went from soldier BB to Flagship. This is also why Mutsu has a skin that is just Nagato's old armor. Most of the NPC to useable ships have lore reasons for the art change but are still the same artist. 😊
For my personal head-canon, I use the old Prince of Wales design as HMS Anson.
And the old Laffey design (With the rigging from Cooper & Allen M. Sumner) as USS Laffey (DD-724).
I have some head-canons of my own for ones that you didn't cover:
The original arts of Colorado and West Virginia are the Lexington-class battlecruiser sisters Constitution and United States.
The original art of Maryland is the New York-Class Battleship, New York (BB-34).
The original Nagato is now one of the WoWs versions of the A-140-J3 design, named Iwami.
The original Shokaku is the escort carrier Kaiyō, while original Zuikaku is the escort carrier Shin'yō.
The original art of Haurna is Hizen (Another version of the A-140-J3 design), Hiei is Daisen (Another A-140-J3 design battleship, but with cruiser torpedoes), Kirishima is Ashitaka (The 4th sister of Amagi, before she was renamed to Takao), and Kongo is Satsuma (Upgraded A-150 Super Yamato).
The original Mogami is Tenryū (The light cruiser that was before both the Kuma & Nagara classes, and both these classes, the Tenryū & the Kuma, are missing within Azur Lane), while Mikuma is Takahashi (Another light cruiser with fifteen 5.9 in. guns, it was also a development of the Tone-class heavy cruisers. Which had reinforced AA and torpedoes).
The original versions of Indianapolis, Chikuma, Ryujō, Hood, Jersey, Jeanne D'Arc, and Kirov can work as early life versions, before any retrofits.
Edit: Since Shimanto came into the game in PR6, She's been changed to Natori.
Edit 2: Since Natori & Constellation are now in the game, beta Maryland & Mogami have been changed to now be New York & Tenryū.

One: Since Laffey II now exists in the game, my idea for the beta design of Laffey has been changed to represent the USS Halford (A Fletcher-Class Destroyer which was modified to have an aircraft catapult).
Two: Since Natori came in the same event that fave us Unzen & Owari, how about having your depiction of the beta design of Mogami now represent Tenryu?
Three: Since Constellation came in the recent event that also gave us Guam, might I suggest making the beta design of Maryland represent the USS New York (BB-34 and the older sister to Texas)? This way, beta Colorado can now represent Constitution, while beta West Virginia can still represent United States.
I just find it funny that Indy's design change is literally just changing the symbol on the Nuke she rides.
The ones we have now are way better imo. Only the ones from Kirov and Jean D'Arc comes close, the others just seem low effort

The detail of the trail of fire at her feet on the old design was actually a well thought reference of the real Jeanne d'Arc and how she sadly ended ...
You know, maybe one day they'll release the original concepts as skins for us.

Kirov original design should have shark head at the front and bomb bay at the bottom
Original Colorado, West Virginia, Laffey, Shoukaku, Zuikaku, Haruna, and Kongou look like they belong in KC more than AL.
Meanwhile, I can't tell the difference between the two Jeannes d'Arc.
West Virginia, Kirishima and Laffey looked really good before redesign though
Could have used these as meta ships signifying an alternate time-line or maybe our shipgirls accidentally enter a timline with these alternate shipgirls so we can obtain them.
It's interesting on how some of there's girls had oh most no change but others look like competitly different characters. Some could still be used like prince of whales they could bring the old one back as a kid version.
If they had not change Laffey's old design then she would not had been one of my waifus today. I should give thanks
I like the old Hood design more, the longer dress just makes her look more elegant. Also old laffey is a nightmare to me since I'm so used to this laffey design.
I loved some of them, expecially the OG Laffey, i would love to see her as one of Laffey's sisters
Somehow, I never noticed the Jeanne d'Arc and Kirov changes. Kirov is especially surprising since she has quite a noticeable change.
It feels good, until Wales with first concept art come out....

I'd say most of them became better after the change, but I still like Hood's original coat and Maryland's rugged outfit more than the new version.
I really love the OGA of Kongo and Kirov over default ones
I prefer old Laffey (although it's lower quality), Chikuma, Shoukaku and Zuikaku. The rest are either a tie or I prefer the new design.
So the pink haired bunny shipgirl from gem bundles is Laffey? Glad I finally got closure on that, it's been bugging me for years.
To my understanding Colorado Maryland and West Virginia were change because a Fallout with the original artist who is trying to sabotage the game

Hood looks way more sexyer with longer clothes tho. The design is almost similar I wouldn't mind if they would made it the same length.
I like the original USS ships, the IJN changes were good mostly. Whales though! What a good change. Not that the original is bad but the new is so good.

I honestly prefer the original HMS hood design because its more feel like a victorian dress and Jeanne D arc original design because i like the design of the skirt armor and the fire on her feet referencing how she died irl but thats the only part i like about original jeanne design i like the new rigging design more

They have been in the wiki's repository since forever. However, they weren't always featured in the ship's gallery page, you had to know how to use the uploads browsing tool
Original Maryland had very nice boots and a cool chain. I'd like to see that design again someplace.
Kirov and Soyuz redesign made me mad whem they released it but in time we had to used to it so I prefer the current ones.
