If you want to know any artist related to a song or record label, just ask Val Shively. This guy is a walking encyclopedia for Doo Wop and R &B records. It's amazing how he knows exactly where to find your favorite oldies stored on the shelves that are stacked with records from floor to ceiling. In the past I purchased several 45's and CD's from Val. I'm glad he's located in Philly. Don't ever leave. U-Tube did a good job in posting this interview with Val Shively. Thanks!
I've known Val since 1964 when he worked in our family (Empire) record shop before he went with Norman. Absolutely one of the nicest human beings in the world; a real Mensch! (He'll kill me for saying this!) And as you can see, he's a walking encyclopedia in his field. Val was just on VH1 Soul's Soul City - Philadelphia show. There were so many shots of places I used to haunt... including 52nd Street! Good show; good people.
Haven't had contact with Val in over 40 years. Back to the days of Norman Cooper's one stop. In those days, Tom Bell didn't have a car and I would help him out frequently with a ride around Philly. In those days, Val was totally immersed in oldies, it is his life and he has succeeded, as has Tom. Funny, Val got older while I look the same. What can I say except "memories" Bruce
my only source for oldies! i've have called and had somethings shipped, and when I'm in town I drop in and buy. great service and have yet to be disappointed. i'll just have a few words or a hum and oh, my goodness, they know just what i'm talking or singing.
Anybody know the name of the song that's playing in the background of this vid for the first minute and 50 seconds? Sounds like a northern soul record.
You know that Twilight Zone episode, where the guy has a stop-watch and freezes time?.... I'd like to be that guy, in this place, go nuts for a day, then sneek out and start the clock again ! PS...anyone know what date this is from? Val mentions Northern soul has been hot for over 30 years , since late 60's..so I guess this is from around 2000?

Met Val in '97! He was helpful in spite of me not knowing what labels the records I wanted were on.
Val is the man!

That's wild. I knew about Val from his auctions, but never saw his warehouse. It's certain you'd find something in there! Nice clip!
