INDIVIDUALITY: Val Shively, owner of R&B Records
What is it like to own a warehouse with over four million records for sale? For a music fan, it’s a dream come true. For Val Shively, it’s just another day with his “babies.” But don’t expect to browse the never-ending two-story vertical rows of musical gold: “Do Not Enter (unless you know what you want).” Val has always been unconventional, and that’s what kept his store going for 60+ years. As Val says, “Being different is very, very good.”

If I knew what I wanted it would be boring as hell, finding something you didn't know you wanted is what collecting is all about to me. To each is own.
I would never stack records I "loved" flat on top of each other. Condition is EVERYTHING.
Me and my sons went there today! Val was so awesome my son is 16, and Val allowed him to walk the store.. he loves records and will remember this day for the rest of his life.
Happy to live only a trolley ride away. I have gone multiple times and gotten some cool soul albums. It’s great to live so close to
Val, I love the video. It makes me feel like I am visiting your store, which I am definetlly going to do when I retire soon.
Joe Summo
Val,you are the best!!You've got a great listening ear,and for more than the music!!Thank you for serving the community with the store and the church next door.God has blessed you greatly.God and we appreciate what you do with the store and with God.
Been a long time since I’ve seen your name. I use to buy from you when I lived in Phoenix and was working on my first collection. Lost that one to the hospital bills. I’m 75 and starting over again this time without singles. I loved your spot.
VAL, you are a treasure ! thnx for all you've done over the decades.
that is a beautiful thing....he did not let technology and the world command him on how to live his life...........that is true living!
The most knowledge, the most records and the mostest as a man. :-)
Hope he's well... I went there once but didnt have time to dig... I just went in and stood in the doorway... he was like, "What do you want?"... I said, "I just want to be able to say that I've been here", he was like, "oh..." The look on his face was that of a record person recognizing another record person.
There is a lot of truth in this, do what you love and you will become good at it, the money will follow. They make you think the other way round.
Wonderful video wonderful Guy - just bought a copy of Falcons - I can’t help it from Val. What did I get ? A great record and some free goodies.
Top man , top dealer !
Terrific video. Val is genuine and humble. I can relate to him about self esteem. He always treated me with respect. He is a very good man.
Thank you Val!! My record collection would completely suck without you and Chuck!!
Use to buy records from Val at his first store in Wynnfield ( I believe)
I still have a memory of going to 69th street and seeing the Woodstock album in a window of a record shop. I'm pretty sure this was the place.
amazing
There will never be another, he's the best and only of his kind. When he goes, it's over! Love ya Val John B.
Give peace a chance
No it ain't over,Rover, watch Chucky take over!!
I'm here to support BLB
Love this!
great albums are a collection of 45's...45's (maybe some 78's) built the AM airwaves dynasty and cultural oasis in the 50's and 60's - the greatest era of modern teenage music, before it fell off the cliff of self-indulgence and parody...bless you Val, you're a true inspiration...🌈
Somebody's gotta take the 45's.....god bless em. I wonder if he's still got that wall of Jazz albums thou???
A Legend on the UK northern scene
🤟🤟🤟
Peep the dude that missed the bus at 3:07
Fascinating, however....is this a nightmare for the Upper Darby Health Dept?
He's been at this since 1966,store wise. They love him!!!!
HAHA I have some 45 record sleeves with your Val Shively stamp on them
I Got a stack of records here, I've Got a stack of records there'/ TOM TALL's great record tells it all....
inspiring character
I love soul and I love cats. I’m sure we’d get on.
I wish we had some videos of the old Val, pre finding religion and all that.
Place looks like a fire trap -yikes! Also I thought you weren't supposed to stack records flat?
Saw some piles in there.
When you're in business dealing hard core rare 45's and LP's for close to 60 years, then you can comment.Right,Val????
@@ronmartin4212 that's all well and good but if stuff has been piled flat for decades it'll be too warped to play.
you have to stop to pay your friend just because it's your friend, he do not know how to do "his Work"
A person who truly cares about their records wouldn’t keep them that way.
Val's been into this long before you and I were born, guy.Im 59.
Yeah this place is a mess. It’s awesome, but a hoard.
It's a dangerous store
🥴
LOL😆
He is the one with the attitude 🙄
I'm gonna go in there and stick a record down in the front of my pants...
This looks like something that spiraled completely out of control. Not sure if I would call this passion or anything like that. No offense.
Nah this is a hoard. Those records are treated like shit, shop is a mess, cat pisses on whatever is on the floor. Dude says he hates albums. Wtf.
