First thing to do is check oil, put battery on, start engine, see if itis charging, and then test the electrics. There will be a lot of things that do not work unless the engine is running as they would quickly flatten the battery if used with the engine stopped1 Before you dive into the electrics, find the fuseboxes and check that the fuses are not blown and are free from corrosion caused by the standing unused, when you have confirmed all fuses are good, then start to investigate possible faults! The seat/mirror control anomaly is an odd one, but the answer might lie under the centre console panel. Haynes manual? Phil
Who cares if it runs or not! I'd be happy just sitting in there, surrounded by opulence, watching the world go by, listening to some soothing music on the stereo, cocooned in my own little Rolls Royce world of wood and leather, ahhh bliss! Brave man to try the wipers with all that accumulated grit and possibly perished blades. The battery may well have 12volts but not sufficient amperage to trigger the central locking mechanism. My BMW had solenoids but my Mercedes had air lines.
Great content, Paul. After standing idle outside in all weathers for nearly 3 years, the state of the electrics are far better than predicted. The niggles will take time and patience to put right. The last thing you need is an electrical fire. Calls for you to start the engine, without the necessary prep first, are premature. With so much that could go expensively wrong, take your time, buddy, and follow best practice.
Beautiful, my dream, but i prefer the most common mkI Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit of the 80s, maybe for the history, the Silver Spirit is a car fantastic only in the british isles, abroad with a Italian or german or french numberplate is not a nice car
Hopefully a keeper for you this car. Stunning colour/interior combination. It was a real gem of a find. There is no car built like a real (not BMW) RR.
Chances are the brake accumulator spheres could be shot (not holding nitrogen charge), if it's been sat for a while and you don't know the service history. Hence the brake warning lights. There is a way to test the health of them, but you need to run the engine to see if they are being charged up. It's an unusual braking system, in that it doesn't have a master cylinder.
Brake pressure is produced from two brake pumps, one at the front and one at the rear of the tappet chest in the valley between the cylinders . You wont get anything until the engine is running, then you will know if the accumulators are any good. My memory is hazy as i haven't worked on one of these since training on them in the '80's.
I am guessing that if you closed the boot, the central locking would work. With my car (not a RR) if a door is not properly shut the central locking won’t work.
Mirror position is stored with the seat memory, but they shouldn't move with the seat position buttons, that's caused by internal shorts in the seat ECU. Memory backup battery leaks and causes this.
As an ex automotive electrician the first thing I would do is remove, check & clean every fuse. That alarm looks after market to me. You should look under bonnet for a siren, either knackered, turned off (small key on back) or simply unplugged. Often unplugged as if internal backup battery dies it can flatten the vehicle battery by keep trying to charge.
@@life_on_cars I think you are being CONVENTIONAL, to even CONSIDER re-dying the beautiful rugs! They are now "2 - tone", and all the more beautiful for it! Personally, I can't for the life of me, see why Rolls Royce even thought to put RUGS in a car. Don't rugs usually live in a HOUSE? I would put one in the bathroom, and one beside the bed - so when you wake up - your toes don 't get cold, before you put your slippers on! AND, those lovely carpets will be SEEN, without rugs! You could have colour toned rubber mats to protect those carpets.
If the mirrors only move with the drivers seat adjust I'm thinking it's not a fault......they might move to stay with the drivers view as the seat adjusts?
nice work i think as you know the key works drivers door close everything lock door and see if key alarm thing works the heater fan not sure on that one it’s a big car and a big fan i hire so might not be like other cars ❤ love your progress with the weather stopping you if buy a cheap gazibo and crack on ❤
Progress in these early videos will be slow until the full diagnosis is complete. One headlight out f.o.s. on low beam. Can’t wait for engine work and fixing any issues found. Catch you on the next one. Dave Birmingham
Did you get a handbook? Would explain a lot. Fuse board is on passengers side dlower dash & release button to open is shown when passengers door is open.Black round switch. There oisa reset button for door locks in there.
The carpets have had the red dye fade which is normally the worst colour for fading. That's why they've gone a bluey green you could try readying by hand just the affected areas with a more red biased colour.
Suggest you wash and detail the car as soon as possible to help your neighbors feel good about you having the car in the neighborhood. I would take the spark plugs out put penetrating oil do each cylinder before turn the engine over. Drain the petrol tank and clean the fluid lines. I would worry about the electric tools in the car until you have it running and driving. Watch other's videos on the unusual braking and suspension system on the car and remind many of the parts are NOT just RR/Bentley parts- other brands and second hand are often cheaper.
Going to watch all your videos on this RR , no doubt many people watching will be comparing it to the series of videos " My mate Vince " did on the cheapest RR he bought , from the start of his epic journey to get it through its M O T.
You should have had the hood open and a fire extinguisher handy. And not tightened the battery cable solid. In case you need to pull quickly then done a sniff test under hood for fire. The silver shadow RR had 80.000 parts to build it. This probably got more.
No haynes manuals for these,or any other manuals unfortunatley unless you could find super rare workshop one and think they only available on some sort of disc thingy.
On the Silver Spirit and Bentley 8 (both lates 80's examples) that I regularly drive, the blower/heater fan starts working about a minute after the engine is started. I'm not sure if this is a fault or an RR thing though?
Well done, Paul. I think it would be safe to say... take your time with this project. It's going to definitely be a long term process to get this lovely car back to its best. The electrics will test you, but trust me, you will definitely get there. There is absolutely no rush with restoring a classic Rolls Royce like this one. I wish you all the very best,my friend. S
Came across your channel just by chance and going to enjoy every single episode what a lovely car I would of happily paid the money for it ,I have just finished watching a channel called “ My mate Vince “ he bought a Rolls Royce 1988 Silver Spirit he’s just finished his car and got it through its mot , I thoroughly enjoyed watching him transform his lovely car he produced 61 videos , I have subscribed to your channel and looking forward to watching you transform your lovely example
Hopefully, everything else will be plain sailing Paul ... but then again, it wouldn't be as much fun without a few head scratchers. I spy a silver XK convertable drive by at 6:46 😉
There's an ICU in each front seat. There is a battery that you are supposed to change every ten years. I'm betting yours are the original and that they've leaked. You'll need to see if the circuit board is damaged and at the very least replace the batteries in these. The ICUs contain about twenty solenoids and operate the seats and mirrors. Getting them serviced is expensive so hopefully you can do it yourself if you can ger the seat out. Not the whole seat just the bit you sit on. Good luck I hope YOU can fix it, I need professional help with my Bentley.
For all the none mechanics on here asking Paul to start it... calm it down. There is no way you start a car without checking oils, plugs, lines etc. etc. after been stood for so long. Start it now and it leads to engine damage. Paul is doing the right thing and taking his time... nice one mate...
I’ve subscribed and think this will be a great project, but please work on your presentation. This all feels like Take 2…! The beep as you turn on is the mobile phone base station. The clicking is probably the indicator relay flashing the indicators to show it is set. Who tries the alarm when in the car?

I don't believe that's an electrical fault on the mirrors mate, I think they are supposed to adjust when the seat is adjusted

Great video... well done on working out the alarm. Now you are into the car you need to go buy a jar of Grey Poupon and put it into the glove box... !

Great video again Paul. Really enjoyed this and can’t wait for the next episode.
Well done on the 5k subscriber milestone.
The door mirrors adjust according to the seat position after original setting to suit drivers new position, this is a Rolls.
I was wondering if they had something to do with the memory settings.
Spot on.
Mirror position is stored with the seat memory, but they shouldn't move with the seat position buttons, that's caused by internal shorts in the seat ECU. Memory backup battery leaks and causes this.
Was hoping the RR would get a wash by now😊

the central locking used to be operated by vacuum but that was in 70 s

All my CTek broke. I presumed they would never break. Just stopped working over time.
Does it run ? Thought you should know that by now , but haven’t seen it running ?
Bad weather in UK. Getting closer buddy
Central locking needs a vacuum from the engine.
Not on these, they're purely electric.
Go into your cars obd system and tell it that it has a new battery...be careful as your car will probably be pre obd2
The clock and flashing alarm will flatten a battery. Don’t forget to unhook.
Hopefully you can win some viewers from my mate Vince channel now he’s finished his lovely example all the best Mick.
Forget the rugs for the time being..... engine first!
The mirrors are supposed to move with the drivers seat
The central loving might not work because boot open
Start the engine then try the electrics !!!!! some things may not work without an engine running the battery will be flat by the time you crank it.
Lazerline 3 button alarm fob 👍
