Bringing a car back to life is such a great feeling. I’m 29 and I refuse to have a high car payment and I bought an 03 Volvo s80 I’m slowly restoring. It’s high mileage but I love it. That rolls is a beauty 😍
Paul, I own a 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit, (more unusually at age 23), and my garage is slightly too short for it. I was in the exact position as you, stressing about it being on a driveway. Keep it clean, and invest in a made to measure cover, (Flying Spares can supply), and she will be fine! Mine remains immaculate. Another bit of advice from my year or so ownership and personal RR experience, is when it is recommissioned, USE IT. Seals tend to dry and crack without lubrication, and in worst cases they need overhauls of the hydraulic system due to excessive leaks . I would also recommend getting accumulator pressures checked at a later stage mate. The brakes are pressurised from a cam driven pump, and if the spheres etc are bad you very quickly end up getting NO brakes when you have exhausted pressure. You should be getting min 15-20 pumps before warning appears for Low brake pressure. Finally, I would also encourage a trip to Starman’s Rolls Royce and Bentley specialists, know them inside out and are genuinely well priced. Cannot wait for the other videos, please save her !
...that smile, 24:41, says it all! 😊 Beautiful R.R.! Life is to be enjoyed. It's been said, "We will be more upset at the things we DIDN'T do than the things we DID..." 👍👍
Really glad RUclips recommended your channel. There are few people doing the sort of in depth repair work you are showing and for us RR owners with limited ability and lack of nerve to wade in and start our own repairs your channel helps remove some of the mystique of these cars. I own a 96 spirit and have spent a fortune keeping it going. Most costly items: head gasket failure at about 50k miles (then the new gaskets also failed so watch out for that), bodywork addressed - rusty wheel arches and numerous small paint issues requiring some metal fabrication and partial respray by the great guys at NRT Motors near Tewkesbury. Numerous pesky electrical issues no doubt due to age of the car and the stereo speakers are shot, but she’s a lovely thing to waft about the Cotswolds in on a fine day so I forgive her all her faults. Good luck with your car - you got a bargain and the paint looks amazing on screen.
Thanks very much for your kind words. The paint is looking OK although she's suffered car park dings and scratches also some tiny blisters near a couple of door handles (water getting under paint on those alloy doors) which will need addressing at some point)
Thank God I came across your channel. I followed My mate Vince for 2 years, watching him put back on the road a £4000 RR silver spirit. His videos have now ended. I really look forward to see the Rolls Royce progressing. Good look Paul. Roll on episode 2.
Decades back, a recently retired engineer I once knew, impulsively bought himself an old Silver Shadow when he saw it going cheap on a used car lot. He had an empty shed by his house and wanted a hobby project to keep him occupied. Other than that, he had no plans for it - maybe something to go touring in eventually. After dealing with a few issues, tidying it up and getting it running satisfactorily, he was asked by family members if they could use it for a wedding. Word spread in the rural area where he lived, and he was asked again and again, charging a fair price for the service - He even bought a chauffeur's outfit! Eventually he was even asked to use the car to pick up businessmen and foreign visitors on airport runs. It was never a full time thing - he did a bit of work from time to time as he pleased. But the car paid for it's keep with improvements and servicing as and when needed. I asked about the cost of servicing and was told that there were generic and used parts about for the car which kept costs down. Sadly, his wife thought it was a bit too ostentatious for holidays, though.
How classy it looks, even abandoned, compared to the awful Audi common jelly moulds it was parked near. Looking forward to seeing it on the road again 😊
I stumbled across your channel last week. Total respect, you are an enthusiast sir, it is a real pleasure to watch. I am considering a Rolls Royce myself and your channel is so helpful in respect of issues that may occur. I had a Bentley T2 years ago and it was a real pleasure to drive and not that expensive to maintain. Keep going. I'll become a channel member.
Born and Bred in Crewe, still live here and almost 60 years of age.. Most my family and friends worked for the company since before WW2... Chances are they might have been involved in building this particular car... Hope it all goes well... Love the colour. 👌
YES! Woohoo! thanks for the nod on facebook... so please you got it, like i said previously it's my first passion, you are not crazy mate just enjoy it.. nothing like it on the road... looking forward to watching you get this to a great standard... very excited!
Jeezz, what a bargain. Eagerly waiting for part 2. I can totally understand how you must have felt. Not long ago, I bought a Shad 2 that needed a lot of work. It's a bit surreal to suddenly own a Rolls, but it's a great feeling. Cheers, Chris
Under the bonnet there are a battery positive terminal and negative, Connect a battery charger on low trickle charge and let it sit with the doors locked for 48 hrs. then try the boot release button.
Mrs life on cars sounds a complete diamond. It's a massive undertaking but it will get someone who will put his heart and soul into turning it around. Keep ticking off that list bit by bit. It's meant to be and us viewers are very lucky and grateful to be joining you on the journey. Awesome stuff.
Excellent find. The trim looks great, interior great. Paint prob be fine. Just mechanics and electrics. No more tricky than a 1970s top of the range Citroen. Most parts are big and well made and hence pricey.
Amazing buy in my opinion mate 🎉 it’s in really good condition for a abandoned car 🚗. Look forward to seeing the progress. Try not keeping us waiting too long.
That Alpine radio is worth around £400-£500 alone if it works perfectly. It’s a 7618RR and bespoke to Rolls Royce and Bentleys only. Very desirable deck that. Even more so that you still have the factory Alpine amps too.
Lots of work but your RR is 1000x better than the 'My Mate Vince' roller. You have the experience, he had none. He brought his back from the grave , on a drive, minimal tools , dodgy techniques, rattle can spray job, the ish. Got it through an MOT no probs. Found a very inexpensive fix for the air suspension using Citroen spheres, also found some very neat fixes for electrical problems which is really what his channel is all about.
I owned a 1981 Silver Shadow II 20 years ago. Every time I drove it, it was a special occasion! It drained my bank account though so I had to sell it and basically got back what I paid for it! So, lovely car but very expensive if you cant do all the work yourself!
Good for you!! Challenges for sure, but also a great reward when you pull it off. The interior looks amazingly good considering the price. And yes, it deserves to be saved.
I love your video, your personality, your spirit, and honesty. I'm especially excited for you because I was about your age when I purchased my first luxury classic, a 1980 Mercedes SD Turbodiesel. First thing! You'll find there's far more room to work on items as compared to an MR2, or Jaguar coupe. 😂 Restoring my car took several years, but the results were astounding. A neighbor bought the M-B, and it continues on in the neighborhood twenty years later. It's held up much better than I have and appears to be in wonderful condition. Good luck!
Inject light oil into lock and tap with a wooden hammer on side of the lock when key is in,because it sounds light the tumblers have stuck in the wrong positions,it’s worth a try
Probably smothering it with something like WD40 and just inserting, slightly twisting, pulling and reinserting the key dozens of times until the tumblers free up.
New subscriber here, fantastic stuff. Love the SZ series cars and your passion and enthusiasm really shines through, can’t wait to watch the rest. From a fellow North Eastener, albeit displaced now. 👍
1:10 Mrs LifeonCars is bang on. People spend £thousands a year on football season tickets or weird sport, or whatever. So spending a few grand on an old Rolls that you'll enjoy tinkering with for months or years is totally worth it. I guess you could also turn the old phrase backwards: happy husband, happy wife :)
Just subbed, this is looking very interesting. What a huge amount of car for the money. If the bodywork is as good as it looks then I imagine the makings of a fantastic car!👍
That looks incredible. Well done for finding it and taking it on. There will no doubt be a lot of work in it, but it looks in pretty good nick, and I reckon it will be worth it. Mrs Life on Cars is very perceptive, and you will get a lot of pleasure from this project. Have you seen My Mate Vince on RUclips? He restored the cheapest RR in the UK. Yours look 100 times better than his when he first got his hands on it.
Great purchase mate, gorgeous colour, fabulous interior. Dreams are dreams and when they can come true it's fantastic, it's one thing to be very rich and buy a car, it's another thing to have some money and try to make a dream come true, good luck
In 2010 I bought a Shadow 1 for £1800, and had it fitted with LPG- returned a fantastic mpg and eventually sold to a museum in Germany for £4K. Best vehicle ever.
Congratulations! That looks like a challenge but a lot of it looks really good. I've got a similar car, a '96 Bentley Turbo R in the same colour, and it's like nothing else. You might need to drill a small hole to get in to the boot, it's not something I've done myself but I'm sure I've seen people discuss it on the Rolls-Royce forums, which is well worth a look at. Best of luck with it and hope it's not too ruinous, once you get it recommissioned as others have said use it!
I was the same way when that XKR-S appeared for sale last christmas, unlike you my missus has no interest in cars so it was my own problem - I couild not live with myself if I let it go and could not sleep so I drove 8 hours round trip to make it my own - well done on getting that Rolls these opportunities rarely present themselves in life - you will get a heap of subscribers now following that car and its restoration! Life is full of misery and cars are a pastime that bring solitude and joy, then there are Rolls Royce...

It could make 600-700whp easy and probably get at least 20mpg highway depending on the gearing and tuning. I'm sure there is more incentive to keep it all stock there. More modern efi and ignition controls could probabaly make it a lot more fuel efficent and powerful if there was a way to adapt anything like crank trigger, coil on or near plug, sequential multiport efi, wide band O2, maf. Not that it's the sort of car that you'd want to hot rod but, it's probably such a novelty to have a V8 there ypu at least want the thing to feel strong for all that fuel, tax, maintanence and expense. It's the sort of car that is meant to be a durable good, most systems are over engineered and rebuildable. With so few miles, it's probably worse than if it was driven semi-regular, was garaged and had 144,000. Everything rubber, all accessories and fluids gotta be changed. Hopefully it comes back nice for you, not sure if it would be worth anymore all fixed up than what it might cost you to do it. Those are a handsome later Rolls and the last of the REAL Rolls before BMW meddling. I'm here for it.
That's a true Barn Find .....minus the Barn. I think you'll enjoy the experience of ownership don't be frightened of it it's just nuts and bolts..... and some wires. I think you have a good purchase there. Looking forward to the journey. 🇦🇺
Hi Paul just subscribed to your channel to follow the progress on this beautiful car! What an absolute bargain that car will look amazing after a good clean and a polish! Congrats 👏🏻
GREAT NEW CAR FOR THE CHANNEL. Looks like a good body and interior gives you a good starting point, Can you ditch the rear accumulators? You will find the braking system interesting. Great project will be following you closely.
Great car, shame about the Yokohama A/T tyres that are fitted, not the right tyres for the vehicle. I’m sure you will do a brilliant job restoring it to its former splendour.
Just came across your channel. The Rolls looks good. Will enjoy watching the vids as you refurbish it. Do you mind me asking as im new, whats the car in the channel logo with the 5 headlights or the significance of the 5 lights, if there is any. Looking forward to the projects videos.
In regards to the opening the boot you can slow charge the battery through the cigarette lighter to then open the boot. Found this video randomly on a. Yt rabbit hole and have now subscribed, will be watching from Australia 👍🏻
These Cars will start under the most austere conditions. Cranked a 57 Silver Cloud that had been in storage for 40 years . Did basic servicing and she started right up with no problems .
Will be an interesting journey to follow, I owned a silver shadow for 19 years , it was a great experience ,ok pleasure and some pain but they are a beautiful motor car worth saving . Great buy ,well done.👌😉👌
New subscriber here.great timing with this.a fellow named vince has just done a spirit on a budget over 2 years.his was a 1989 one the same as mine.fabulous cars look forward to following you fixing this up.
Phone Karl at westminser autos he will tell you how to get in the boot that is where the isolator is did you get 2 keys with it the 1 for the boot is different to the ignition they are Yale keys.
No ,you Sir are not mad just going into the well over kind of stage in life. Some parts are lost like the hair, some parts start growing bigger like ears, some things aint working that well or stop working like the ****. When this is happening it's time for an old rolls royce. Been there done that. Gonna do it one more time. Next project of mine. Old lotus esprit😊
Paul just check you are not using the valet key to try and open the boot, another thing on the later spirits( mine is a spirit 11) when the engine is running and you put it into gear, the handbrake will release itself.
OMG Paul, what a motor, what a project! I wish you all the luck with this one, I'll be watching avidly. I know nothing about Rolls's but you have moral support from me, really want to hear it running........
I wish you all the very best for the restoration of your Rolls Royce Silver Spirit III, Paul. It's not going to be an easy job, but... It's going to be an extremely rewarding journey! My best, Stuart

Great project - and that interior looks mighty good for an abandoned car. Looking forward to seeing how this one progresses.
They're beautiful cars, why wouldn't you want one 😄 The craftsmanship brings you right back to bygone days. Can't be cheap to run these days though.
Amazing buy in my opinion mate 🎉 it’s in really good condition for a abandoned car 🚗. Look forward to seeing the progress. Try not keeping us waiting too long.

The smile on your face is priceless 👍👍
That Alpine radio is worth around £400-£500 alone if it works perfectly.
It’s a 7618RR and bespoke to Rolls Royce and Bentleys only.
Very desirable deck that.
Even more so that you still have the factory Alpine amps too.
Thanks for the info
I am Soooooo jealous !!!! I would love that project !!

My favourite British saloon!
Always has been, always will be!
£105k in 1994 is £215k in todays money. Great video.
Brave man getting in to the back of a car and closing the door without checking the child locks are not on :D

Despite it being cheap, it looks complete and very good indeed! Pristine interior, will turn out absolutely fine. Looking forward to the series.😊

Good for you!! Challenges for sure, but also a great reward when you pull it off. The interior looks amazingly good considering the price. And yes, it deserves to be saved.
Geeze ,we only live once.Good Luck.

Good buy. Will clean up nice
Maybe boot rubber sticky. Pull hard. Make sure boot is fully latched. Put charged battery on it it has soft close.
Just came across your channel. The Rolls looks good. Will enjoy watching the vids as you refurbish it.
Do you mind me asking as im new, whats the car in the channel logo with the 5 headlights or the significance of the 5 lights, if there is any.
Looking forward to the projects videos.
Thanks for watching. the 5 headlight thing in the logo is unusual isn't it 😊
Great job Paul, how exciting. Can't wait to see the finished product
It was nice to meet you and your wife today in cold Pickering ! Will see you again hopefully in the future 😊👏🏻 V8 Rebellion forever 😂
Great to meet you !
So, rear suspension, parking brake, Lights and front bearings for a start. It'll be a new car after a wash n brush up. Enjoy the trip...
Good job, enjoy it.
In regards to the opening the boot you can slow charge the battery through the cigarette lighter to then open the boot.
Found this video randomly on a. Yt rabbit hole and have now subscribed, will be watching from Australia 👍🏻
Thanks Buddy
These Cars will start under the most austere conditions. Cranked a 57 Silver Cloud that had been in storage for 40 years . Did basic servicing and she started right up with no problems .
Will be an interesting journey to follow, I owned a silver shadow for 19 years , it was a great experience ,ok pleasure and some pain but they are a beautiful motor car worth saving . Great buy ,well done.👌😉👌
Good on Yer Mate
Magnificent project. Love the maroon exterior with the cream leather and maroon piping. 44000 miles 🤔 hopefully light wear mechanically.
Rolls-Royce called it "Wildberry" - my Turbo R is the same. It looks even better in the sun than it does on camera
The interior looks great 👍 sub’d
@@Richard57072 thanks 😊
New subscriber here.great timing with this.a fellow named vince has just done a spirit on a budget over 2 years.his was a 1989 one the same as mine.fabulous cars look forward to following you fixing this up.
Thanks Buddy
Good on you. I'm looking forward to watching the revival of this wonderful Spirit!
Great news, Paul. You know it makes sense because of the masses of inspiring content this project will provide. Go for it, buddy!!👍👍
The auction house I work for sold America’s cheapest Rolls Royce this past weekend. A 1987 Rolls for $1,000.
The Beast of Burgundy 👹🎴
Phone Karl at westminser autos he will tell you how to get in the boot that is where the isolator is did you get 2 keys with it the 1 for the boot is different to the ignition they are Yale keys.
No ,you Sir are not mad just going into the well over kind of stage in life. Some parts are lost like the hair, some parts start growing bigger like ears, some things aint working that well or stop working like the ****. When this is happening it's time for an old rolls royce. Been there done that. Gonna do it one more time. Next project of mine. Old lotus esprit😊
If you need any spares try Westminster autos at sherburn in helmet near leeds they break them all the time.
Thanks Buddy that's useful
Paul just check you are not using the valet key to try and open the boot, another thing on the later spirits( mine is a spirit 11) when the engine is running and you put it into gear, the handbrake will release itself.
Could have been worse mate you could have bought a 1981 Aston Martin Lagonda ( or bits of one!) for the same price lol
OMG Paul, what a motor, what a project! I wish you all the luck with this one, I'll be watching avidly. I know nothing about Rolls's but you have moral support from me, really want to hear it running........
Thanks Buddy
It's beautiful mate. Just beautiful. Do you think any Rolls Royce toolkit ever got used?
That’s a good price for rolls, but don’t put your wallet away. You’ll be needing that. 😁
😂😂😂😂😂, very nice indeed man, congrats
I wish you all the very best for the restoration of your Rolls Royce Silver Spirit III, Paul. It's not going to be an easy job, but... It's going to be an extremely rewarding journey! My best, Stuart
Did you turn the isolater switch on for power to the car?
Hugely excited for you. You've got an amazing deal on a fabulous car and I cannot wait to see the next instalment!
