Hi! My name is Tim The Lawnmower Man and I love to clean up overgrown yards and make fun videos doing it. I'm able to do them for free as these videos have ads on them and the revenue from that enables me to cover my cost.
I'm always looking for the worst yards around. Sometimes I drive around looking for them, sometimes viewers send me suggestions.

Hi Tim. I am watching you from the US (Texas). Here, we would refer to the material in the driveway as "GrassCrete". It is meant to be eco-friendly. It provides a semi-porous surface which stands up to automobile traffic and allows the surface water to penetrate the soil rather than run off. Not only does it replenish the aquifer, but it also helps with erosion control. I learned about it in the 70's when I was in college studying architecture. So, your statement of it being a product of the 60's is probably spot on. Sorry to hear you don't like it. It is meant to look exactly like you see it with the grass growing through the holes. Don't sweat it. Just run the mower over it on the lowest setting and edge the sides. BTW, love your videos.

The reason for those particular pavers is they are to allow the grass to grow through so all you have to do is mow ... and it allows vehicles to drive / park on them without leaving worn driveway marks on the lawn. Some people also use them to prevent dogs from digging up the lawn.

As many others have said, the patterned blocks are for drainage reasons, they should be laid on a sand/gravel/ crushed rock bed over a ground seal cloth. The spaces should have stones/crushed rock in them, due to cost this is not always done.

That Milwaukee trimmer is very powerful. Those types of driveways were designed to be cooler and negate the heat island effect created by cement slabs. Also they are designed to help preserve groundwater by absorbing rain water and not just draining it off to the storm sewers.

I live in the US, but I've spent a lot of time in Germany and there were a lot of driveways similar to that there. When they're new, the holes in the blocks are filled with a small gravel (1/4-inch or 0.5cm size). I assume it allows water to seep in to the ground much faster than solid pavers. The gravel-filled holes are covered with grass after a couple of years but they usually look ok and don't require mowing or other maintenance if the driveway gets used frequently.

Well, one result was to bring back the topic of driveways with growth in the pavers intended as part of the design. People seem to have confirmed it as a landscape design choice of the time period of building. Now, many years later, people living in those areas can have an idea of what the maintenance was meant to be and how to deal with it. I would classify this yard as a Restoration. You refound the form, design and got it back to usable order and recovered the physical and visual space. It can be maintained now. Looked nice. Thank you for all your work.

Tim, I really like that style of driveway. Where I live it's not considered a permanent structure so it is not taxed like concrete and it's more durable than blacktop/asphalt.

Wow, that backyard... just add a few holes and you've got a mini-golf course! Great work & results as always Tim. Onya.

In the states they do higher end fire truck lanes with heavy road base and pavers on top of the road base where lawn can grow through them. You just mow over them and let the grass grow through them.

    Hello Tim
I am watching you from germany. These stones are called lawnstones in my country. The lawn please not removed, it is mown with the mower like normal lawn.
The stones are important for driving on the ground better. Greetings from germany Chris ❤

@Tim The Lawnmower Man, I've followed you long enough to know that that whipper snipper was giving you some issues there in the beginning. Big difference once you switched out. Excellent job as always. Really enjoyed seeing the hidden surprise of that sidewalk!

Seeing all the tall grass I was just wondering if you walk through ahead of time to check for little critters who might be in the grass. Someone here in America found an injured kitty ( that he brought to a shelter) who was just sitting there among the really tall grass. It just made me wonder.
Fantastic job on this lawn, as usual. It looks so good!! 😊
