  • replaced a water pump on a 1999 bmw z3. the bearing was completely worn out to the point that the viscous cooling fan was not far from falling off.
    the engine had lost all its coolant and the worry was...has the engine been overheated to the point of causing damage...

    Those engines of that era were bullet proof, once had a 325i and the expansion tank on the side of the radiator exploded on the M62, I drove it home with the temp pegged at maximum, fitted a new radiator and drove it for the next two years with no problems, one of the best cars I have owned.

    I've just changed my water pump Alan on my E36 with the 6 cylinder 2.5, I did it as a matter of course as I've changed the condenser and a/c pump & receiver dryer, they are a good engine and I love the brand, love watching your videos bud you and Moni do. 👍

  • @kremnin
    @kremnin 2 года назад +5

    That shocked me. The amount of 6-cylinder BMW engines that I have seen with water pump problems, i.e. The impeller spun off the end of the shaft, has always resulted in a new engine, because it is pointless changing the head gasket. The heads will not only crack, but warp like a banana, and so do the blocks. Have you ever tried to straighten a banana?
    I grew to hate BMWs and said that I would never buy another one as long as I live.
    Now BMW has problems with the diesel engines having the cam chain at the rear of the engine and unserviceable until it all goes wrong about 90 - 100k miles, then it's a new engine, Thanks BMW... NOT!

    • @alan4x
      @alan4x  2 года назад +2

      those bmws with the chain at the rear of the engine are just ridiculous, i will never buy one for that reason

    • @chriswilson1853
      @chriswilson1853 2 года назад +1

      Mine overheated and dumped its coolant twice in the 10 years I had it. Once due to a failed viscous fan and once because of a stuck thermostat. Both times the engine and head gasket were fine.

    You ought to have seen some of the destroyed water pumps I changed on taxis over the years. I thought cab drivers were the only one's who could proper bugger an engine ...but I gotta say Alan that's the worst i've seen lol!

  • @grahamepigney8565
    @grahamepigney8565 2 года назад +3

    I had a bwater pump bearing on one of my E39 M57D30s collapse like that. Fortunately being a common rail diesel the engine only got very hot and didn't overheat.
    Getting that K&N filter replaced with original spec filter housing and ducting would improve the engine as would getting the fan shroud reinstalled.

  • @steverandall5814
    @steverandall5814 2 года назад +1

    It never ceases to amaze me how drivers can neglect and abuse their cars...even high-end makes like BMW. That oiled K&N type air filter isn't doing the mass airflow sensor right downstream of it any good either. Odds are it's gummed with air filter oil.

  • @berwhaletheavenger
    @berwhaletheavenger 2 года назад +3

    The plastic fan shroud is missing on that one - and I would be replacing the viscous fan coupling as well. The grotty old one fitted is almost certainly the original. The pump wasn't the factory fitted one but had been in there a long time. The orange coolant needs draining, flushing and replacing with the proper blue stuff ideally. The 2.0 M52TU engine is a tough old lump.

    One problem with these is that the viscous fan clutch fails over time, but the problem is masked because the air conditioning pusher fan also acts as an auxiliary cooling fan. Most of the time it copes, but get stuck in a traffic jam on a really hot day, and you end up boiling the coolant. Ask me how I know this!

    WARNING!!!!! .............DO NOT DO THIS !!
    IF a head is cone that would have blown the coolant out of the res/rad, when the engine was cold!
    Actually you didn't have that engine hot or/and there is most likely air in it.
    You know you can boil water and coolant under 0c* when you lower the pressure ?
    And that you can raise the boiling point by raising the pressure?
    And thats why there is pressure reading on the cap for over pressure it blows out and so there is no need to you burn your self...
    The Temp.meter (at dashboard are cone for this reason now days)don't normally show how hot coolant is and its done so as they run hotter then 100c!
    And when they did "show temp" it was a lie for the ones that didn't know over 100c* is OK for cars coolant!
    So when you undo the rad/res cap as the system is hot. The pressure lowers in the closed system.
    ....and guess what? ...the coolant boils and "the water" raises out of its place. and may burn you!
    Anyway Rant away damn thats bad bearing and clad that fan didnt hit the rad ;)

    this is a m52TUb20 engine.... those are REAL BULLET PROOF! the m54b22 is a piece of crap IFF she blows coolant! how bigger the m54 is? the more risks they have.. the m52TU types are the rarest because they are NOT LONG deliverd in bmws..
