What most people hate about BMW's are the cost of repairs...what I have experienced and I've owned 5 of them, (3 of which I still have) is good oil, good gas, and good tires and brakes...they are not expensive if you take care of them and don't run them hard.
Thanks! Just hope we can get ours before they rocket in price 😂. They are ridiculously underrated and barely get mentioned so it makes sense they've been cheap for a while

My choices are a silver 4 cyl automatic for $3000 U.S. with a top that has to be manually raised and lowered and 182,000 miles / A 6cyl Automatic with only 86,000 miles that is black on black or another 6cyl with a manual but it has a small dent on the passenger side just forward of the side marker and the drivers window needs manual assistance. The later 2 choices are both $5,300.00 U.S. Never knew anything about them except that they looked very cute. I'm also 6ft 1inch tall. lol Today is Mar 28 , 2024. What do you think? Wish me luck!
Had my 1.9 since June has been great fun. Like you mentioned tho it’s the 2001 version and sadly it just isn’t pokey enough at all. And the engine is a let down. I’ve had an overheating problem since September, replaced thermostat, water pump, expansion tank (which didn’t fit - febi replacement) to then replace the radiator as it came with a fitted expansion tank. Still having problems now is an absolute pain to bleed. Love driving it but rn feel to scrap it. Regret buying the 1.9 so yeah if you can go for the older engines or a 6 cylinder. Stay far away from the facelift 4 cylinders.
@@mikeholland1031 bad valve cover gasket leads to vacuum loss in the PCV system, which leads to oil burning. Oil leakage from the gasket itself is negligible but noticable, because it drips onto the exhaust heat shield. Burnt oil smell after a long drive is a classic giveaway.

Nice video & thanks for the care and maintenance insights. I can feel your passion when you speak about your Z3 & I completely get it. I've loved their Retro look from the day I set eyes on one and there are very few cooler rides (my opinion) roadster or coupè. I'm in Australia and my lady and I use my Z3 like a baby GT. The boot is small though with a little imagination you can certainly get enough gear in there for a driving holiday and what better way to do it. It's early winter here as I write but I still love driving with the top down and the exhaust note is quite intoxicating I agree. Mine's the 2.0i M52 (topaz blue metallic, manual, roadster), while I'd like a little more torque, on a winding road keeping the mill between 3 and 5.5 it really is great fun. The smile factor is off the chart. Mine's a high miler but is still tight and is getting restored from the mechanicals out. I love it and would recommend to anyone that is thinking about a Z3, just do it. You won't regret it. Thanks again for your video and keep them coming.
Thank you for your kind words! Really glad you're loving your Z3, they are such amazing cars with a lot of character. That's part of why we love them so much! Thanks again for watching and commenting 😁
Looking at a 2001 Z3 with a the 3.0L straight 6 and 5 Speed manual combo. It’s Topaz Blue Metallic and has the standard wide-body with the multi spike wheels. The car looks clean but already has 150,000 miles which kinda scares me. Dealer is asking $6,900 which I will pay in cash. I’m also prepared to flush and replace all fluids, belts, hoses, and gaskets as soon as I get the car. It’ll be my 3rd car (so it will not be daily driven), think I’ll be ok? Just concerned about the miles.
Seen plenty of Z3s with 150,000 + miles. As the old saying goes, as long as its been looked after regularly, it's good to go. Be aware that it may need perishable parts replacing like hoses, the thermostat, brake lines etc. If you want to see other high mile examples and talk to the owners to get some more insight, have a look at the forum I have linked in the description. Finally, check for rust. That's what did in my Z3 at 145,000 miles. Other than that it was great!
picked up a 97 2.8 manual here in California, plenty of miles and plenty cheap. Unfortunately, i have noticed couple of the spot welds letting go. Wondering how I will get this repaired. Drives wonderfully otherwise, have put new Bilstein struts/shocks and lowering springs.
Yep dealer just discontinued most parts. Now need a 750 fuel pump . and cram bushings. Keep doing donuts and burn outs . also does anyone have a fix for the automatic soft top . it keeps leaking . still drive with a tape deck love it.

Depends on the engine, condition, service history etc. Also depends on what the prices are in your area. Here in the UK 9k would be a lot for 1.9L with 114k. But 9k for a 3.0L with 114k would be a better deal.
Thanks for the info. I’m looking at a low mileage 2001 z3 2.5 here in the US. I like to work on cars so this looks like a fun car. What do you know about this model?
you'll almost definitely want the more powerful 2.8 or 3.0 instead...or if you got the money a 01 or 02 z3m with the s54 engine...those will be worth over 100,000 in couple years
I love the steptronic in my 3.0i. You can cruise on auto ore push on semi manual on twisty roads. The only proplem is that it likes to overheat and go into auto only. I had a E34 2.8i with the predecessor gearbox, and it destroyed it self at 150k Miles. The Auto Gearboxes are very good, until they brake. I will change the Auto to Manual when it brakes down. And it will.

Hey, Glad you enjoyed it! You can get Roll-over hoops for the Z3. Your best bet is to find them for sale on Z3 facebook groups or forums. You can get full race race cages but you'd have to contact cage manufacturers. Other option is to get a cage custom fabricated
It’s common to have clunking, and first to second takes a hammering from the torque, especially on the bigger engines - but a gearbox change, new clutch and DMF haven’t completely eliminated my clunk (though improved). It could be that the replacement box has a similar issue, but I think some (also common) play in my diff is probably to blame. Most say to leave this alone as it is a slow-burn, and diff rebuilds are expensive in the UK plus beyond my ability and tools.
I guess it depends where the clunk is coming from. When I bought it, my 3.0i clunked on 1->2 gear change. Turned out the rear shocks were completely shot (90000 miles old), causing the whole diff to move when changing gear. New shocks = no more clunking.
Its due to a bad center bearing support on the driveline.. it cheap and easy to fix. I dont know why but internet "experts" almost always overthink it and send people on the craziest wild goose chases, but thats what causes it. You will need to loosen or remove part of the exaust system, a heat shield, the driveshaft and the bearing itself. Its all much easier than it sounds and will fix the problem.
There is no connection between your brake fluid and your exhaust (unless you put the brake fluid in the oil filler 😳) so your white smoke is an engine issue, maybe coolest water leak into the cylinder or engine running cold from thermostat seized in the open position, for example. In any event it needs checking.
Ive been thinking about getting a Z3 and a 1.9 140hp has popped up in my town in gorgeous dark blue for 8k €. Main problem is I'm 6ft 2" and I don't know if I'll be comfortable inside. How much room is there in the cabin??
Snap, 6'2" here as well. Your knees should just fit under the steering wheel and your hair will brush the roof! Definitely sit in it and see how you fit. Big feet as well aren't a problem, was heel and toe-ing merrily in mine. Enjoy!
@@FeelTheDrive if the head Scratches the roof i think i'll be riding top down most of the time 😁 mind if i send you the ad link over here to get an opinion?
170k miles is on the the top end of what you'd want to buy. The engines will easily go to 200k + miles with the right maintenance. Also depends which engine it is. 2.5, 2.8 or 2.2 it's probably a good deal. If it's a 1.9 or 1.8 hopefully it has the nice extras like roll over hoops
Wrong title brother. I just heard you say that the front bumpers were different on the 4 vs. 6 cyls without specifying the difference. I researched it and the 6 cyls has a bigger center vent like an E36 M3. I just put all this work plastic welding cracks and deleting marker lights on my 1.9 front bumper to paint it. Now it will be a dumper!!! Daaaaaaang. I spent my whole weekend working on a piece of garbage.
Wait so you heard me say there was a difference between the bumpers but chose to do work on your bumper before researching for yourself exactly what the differences are? 🤦🏽♂️
Great video with detailed intro. Would you point your finger to the right direction for proper suspension kit for replacement as the vehicle started to bottom out when going over humps? It’s a year 2000, 2.3 and it didn’t do that when I first possessed the vehicle years ago. I believe either the springs or the struts/shocks or both had worked?
Hey thanks for watching! In terms of your suspension question, if you're not looking to change how it feels stock then go for the OEM suspension, Sachs shocks and Monroe springs are a pretty common pairing. Whichever brand you go for, the new parts will improve the car from where it is now bottoming out. If you want to improve the performance the kit used and recommend by a lot of owners is the Bilstein B-12 Pro Kit Suspension. It also drops the car 30mm. One step further is to move to coilovers, KW & BC racing are pretty well recommended. Keep in mind these won't be true coilovers as the rear coil and shock sit independently of each other. Hopefully that helps! Feel free to check out Zroadster forum as they have a wealth of knowledge there!
@@FeelTheDrive Thanks for the prompt response. I only want to replace the parts so that the Z3 no longer bottoms out. Likely use quality 3rd party replacement parts; not BMW parts.
I recently spent the extra money on some KW V3s and man it feels like a whole new car.. so solid when you need it but more comfort over the small bumps.
Sounds like a can of worms when things start to go... So what, regardless of vintage/era roadster is the most basic to keep ticking over on a budget besides an MX5 (I've had one too many of those)😄
Great video. I’ve recently bought a Z3 2.0 but I’ve started noticing randomly the car stalls/switches off when slowing down at low revs. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks
The engines got better, not worse??!! More power and torque and reliability means better to me. I do prefer the M52B28 to the M54B25, but it is only my opinion.
Those are the 6 cylinder engines, yes they got better. For the 4 cylinder they got worse in terms of performance. The M44 140bhp with 16v dropped to 118bhp with 8v so a clear loss in power. To be honest they're all great engines and the car is amazing whatever engine it has
Depends which variant of Z3 it is. 3.0l yes, 1.8l not at much. Also depends on condition of the car and the service history. Go over the car looking at ever detail. 130k miles isn't an issue as long as it's been maintained

What most people hate about BMW's are the cost of repairs...what I have experienced and I've owned 5 of them, (3 of which I still have) is good oil, good gas, and good tires and brakes...they are not expensive if you take care of them and don't run them hard.
Awesome video. Found a 2000 2.8L 5speed z3 for 2k but watched this video before deciding
As the first Z3 ever being in was yours, I have to admit it has definitely been one of the most fun cars I have been in...
Great intro to the Z3. It baffles me how these are still selling for peanuts compared to E30s, it's only about time they will shoot up in price.
Thanks! Just hope we can get ours before they rocket in price 😂. They are ridiculously underrated and barely get mentioned so it makes sense they've been cheap for a while
what is a good price for them? theres a 2002 3.0 in my area selling for around $11000 right now not sure if its a good price or not
@@user-uv8rn4nd8n wow terrible price.
Thank you for sharing interesting and clear information.
great video. Im really looking forward the buy a z3, again...
The European BMW 6 cylinder M54 2.2L engine is a superb alternative to the 3.0L. It's smooth, sounds great, efficient, reliable and powerful enough to offer a great driving experience in the Z3.
Exceptionally well presented and informative
Thank you very much!
Excellent I watch his video over & over
FYI, the Coupe was out in 1999, and in the US, the non-M came the 2.8 Double Vanos motor. For the model year 2000, they updated to the 3 liter motor.
Thank you so much for your vid, I’m deff going to check out re new soft top in Swansea and I had no idea there was a Z3 community. I’ll check that out too.
As I said in my other text, the Z3 is the best car I have ever owned,I could not recommend her higher to anyone thinking of getting one.
I bought a 2002 1.9i 117HP … apart from it being a bit fuel thirsty yeah it’s not super quick but som many times I didn’t notice and I’m doing 100 in the motorway … for me I’m the more perhaps mature owners hahah … no I love the quiet little back roads and not too worried about grunt as such … I find it a great little car and I don’t think I ever want to sell it.
It may not be the most sought after engine size but that doesn't stop it being an amazing car!
@@FeelTheDrive yeah cheers for that chap. It’s a lovely little car and I’m so pleased to own it… I must admit I watched a video after yours and it featured a 2.8 and the grunt of the engine was just great 😂

I'd love to get a Z3 and compare it to my MX5s handling
It's a very discussed topic! Would love compare an MX5 to the our Z3. Classic World may be doing it soon
Easy. I've had both. Mx5's steering is better. Still prefer to drive the z3. No replacement for displacement, feels like an adult car over the Mazda.
Headed this weekend to check out a 2000 Z3 with the 2.5 with only 58K miles. Thank you for making this!!
did you buy it
@@shray5861 yes sir, currently at 67K miles and she’s been great! Couple small things I’ve fixed (door seals, antenna grommet, seat bushings) and a solid detail. Just ran it in autocross this past weekend as well 👍
Hello. It's about 11pm and I'm doing last minute research b4 I purchase one tomorrow.
Go for whichever ticks all your boxes!
Great tips, thanks
The 3.0 can burn oil too, but that's mostly due to a bad valve cover gasket. Easy fix.
Thanks for watching! As I said, all BMWs will with age 😆 and again the beauty with these cars is most things are an easy fix
That's a leak. Burning internally is different
@@MadMarky I didn't know that about the pcv. Burning oil on the manifold smells terrible and could potentially cause a fire but isn't the same as burning internally like I said. Going to see a cheap Z3 tomorrow. Bad paint and ripped seats but really cheap. We'll see if it's worth my time or not. Could prob snag it for under 4 grand Canadian. Mechanicals are all good he claimed.
I have a 1999 z3 now for 6 years with a 2.8 and in that 6 years I never had one oil leak .
These are $3,500 to $25,000 USD depending on year version condition and what state lol my area around $5,000.
It really does vary from country to country! $5k is a lot of money but if you can get a good one it's well worth it!
Thank you for this info-very useful; It would help if there was more about actual owner repairs and technique as there seems to be a total lack of official repair manuals.. I have a Z3 2.0 .
This presenter is terribly handsome !!
Thank you for watching! We have a couple of videos on the Z3 already but we will be making some more soon! We'll let him know 😆
Them eyes have me in a trance
having a hard time deciding which to go for. NC miata, Z3 2.8 or 986 boxster. I know NC is newer and more reliable, but I`m going for the better examples so the other two won`t cause me too much trouble. Small fixes is not a problem for me.
If it helps boxsters are fun but unless you're doing work yourself you're gonna spend a fortune having a shop do engine work. Other than that its a great car compared with the z3
@@kanamekiyru I`ve got myself a boxster, and it`s been spectacular so far. And yes, I turn screws myself, its surprisingly easy to work on. The 2 things i will say the boxster will never tops the 928 over is the lights but most of all the seat comfort
I got a 97 one indo have some rust on the trunk because the orevous owner had a leak from the convertible top. I am not too mechanically inclined but I want to fix that. I got the leak fixed and other that that is tip top.
I have the 2.5 and I only bought it because it was $2500. BUT that being said this car still packs a great punch and has the manual and I LOVEEE this car. 😁😁😁

Z3 3.0 manual in silver, 109000km facelift widebody, would you do it! or a Z4?
I'd go for the Z3. The Z4 is a lovely car, should make a series on that! But the Z3 is just that little bit more special and classic
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, don't you think the Z3 looks a bit like was it an early MG... interesting that one of the designers was Japanese, hmmm, me thinking MX5 also... what a great era. Thanks.

96 only offered 1.9L 4-cyl
It needs welding but the job isn't massive if you know a good welder. Wheeler Dealers have a video on that exact thing!
I have had a 99 2.8 for 10 years dose not use oil no rust at all only use in summer
Yep dealer just discontinued most parts. Now need a 750 fuel pump . and cram bushings. Keep doing donuts and burn outs . also does anyone have a fix for the automatic soft top . it keeps leaking . still drive with a tape deck love it.
Thanks

How bout a 2001 2.2L man? is it any good?
Yup it's a good car, you get 6 cylinders and more power than the 2.0l
It’s a good car - same engine as the 3.0, but (in UK at least) cheaper to tax & insure.
Is 9k a good price for one of these with 114k?
Depends on the engine, condition, service history etc. Also depends on what the prices are in your area. Here in the UK 9k would be a lot for 1.9L with 114k. But 9k for a 3.0L with 114k would be a better deal.

you'll almost definitely want the more powerful 2.8 or 3.0 instead...or if you got the money a 01 or 02 z3m with the s54 engine...those will be worth over 100,000 in couple years
Manual v Automatic? Is that really a question?
Manual is a must!
I prefer the Automatic since I don't have hands.
Auto steptronic every time
I love the steptronic in my 3.0i.

Also they are common for Clunking noise when u press the clutch to switch between gear 1 and 2. Any solution to that?
sounds like syncro, check forums for more info
I was lucky I managed to get a estoril blue 3.0 with full bmw service history for£3500

@@FeelTheDrive that's my old one 🤙
I have 1998 z3 1.9 l when I put break fluid I get a lot of white smoke from my exaust any hint of what's going on??? Please help thank
There is no connection between your brake fluid and your exhaust (unless you put the brake fluid in the oil filler 😳) so your white smoke is an engine issue, maybe coolest water leak into the cylinder or engine running cold from thermostat seized in the open position, for example. In any event it needs checking.

Those are the 6 cylinder engines, yes they got better. For the 4 cylinder they got worse in terms of performance. The M44 140bhp with 16v dropped to 118bhp with 8v so a clear loss in power.
