In 1987, I went to Berlin with my "Trabbi" to see Bob Dylan at his concert in the Treptower Park.
But the surprise of the evening was he. Tom Petty performed with his band The Heartbreakers this evening in the park as a support act of the big star and later as his accompaniment.
Since then his songs have accompanied me.
Yesterday he became a victim of a heart attack. The world loses with him a powerful voice of rock.

I was eighteen years old (54 now) when my girlfriend Becky turned me on to a TP cassette (had a boss cassette deck in my 79 skylark) that we wore out listening to that long Chicago summer. I remember hearing Woman In Love and American Girl for the fist time and thinking man this band is going places. Now, 35 years later, whenever I hear that genius lead of Mike Campbell's guitar at the beginning of American Girl, gathering strength as if it were coming closer, almost sounding like a race car tearing down the Florida 441 that Petty sings of on the song, I think of Becky, can't help it. American Girl is one of those personal songs that is only about one single girl: the girlfriend of millions of American boys.
Tom Petty died yesterday. His passing had me spend the day with a bunch of memories I'd not seen for some time. Sweet memories for the most part. I even spent a half hour or so trying to find Becky online, Facebook, Google, obits even. Wonder what happened to her, My American Girl.
