Hi Alison! I'm a a proud Tom Petty fan from Duisburg. His music touch my heart. I'm fallin for black women. Greetings from a tall blond and white man from germany .
I am a 56 year old white woman from River Rouge and I am crazy about Tom Petty! Music is the universal language! I am so happy that Tom renounced his use of the Confederate Flag at his concerts before he passed away! I am in South Florida now and I really miss my people from Michigan! Stay safe and well sister!
I'm sitting here in my office. The door is closed. I have my head buried in my computer. People walking by who might glance in through the little sidelight window next to the door might be thinking...wow, he really studying something in there...better leave him alone. That's right, leave me alone. Because since I got in here 2 hours ago, my head has been buried into Tom Petty RUclips videos. I'm gonna do this all day in honor of you, Tom. I had forgotten how many great songs you had. And with every one of them, there is no mistaking who it is. You had a sound all your own. Your voice, your guitar tone was instantly recognizable. You were a legend. I wasn't a huge fan like some fans are. I never saw you live. But I never changed the channel either when one of your tunes came on. I own a couple of your albums and they saw some decent turntable time while I was in college and they still do. I was a sophomore in college when "Damn the Torpedoes" was released. It got beer spilled all over it during a few parties but it cleaned up pretty well and I still have it today. I liked "Louisiana Rain" off that album a lot. Never got any radio play and maybe that's why I liked it even more. That one and ":Even the Losers" were my faves from that record. I don't know why I'm writing my life story here. Nobody gives a shit about any of this except me. But you were a part of my youth and you provided background music to a part of my life that I remember fondly. Thanks for all that you did. You always seemed like a cool guy. One of the good guys. A guy who fought his record company when they wanted to raise prices on your albums and you still wanted guys like me to be able to afford them. Just a laid back but stand-up guy who just wanted things to be right. I respect that a lot. You'll be missed. R.I.P.
What you've written is important for everyone who cares about the value that music has in our life. I mean real music, true music, like Tom's music. I'm from Italy, I'm a songwriter and I think that the best thing for the ones who write and sing songs is to be remembered like you remembered Tom. Peace, Love and Rock'n'Roll...TAO
Thanks, Tao. From the USA to Italy and places in between, it is nice to know that we are not alone in our thoughts. As Tom said, "it couldn't have been that easy to forget about me." It's so true.
I appreciate your comments, and I am STILL uncharacteristically SAD about Tom's passing. EVERYDAY, I listen to (and WATCH) some Tom Petty videos on RUclips...What a SUPER COOL guy who I would give up a limb to have met and spent some time with...RIP, Tom Petty.. You are LOVED.
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1977 at Winterland in San Francisco, in 1981 in Vancouver, B.C., then in Indianapolis with my wife and three older kids in 2006, in San Antonio in 2008 with my son in a driving rain, in Houston in 2014 with my two middle daughters and then the last time in 2017 with my next to youngest daughter who was attending UT in Austin. I also sent my daughter who was living in London to see Tom again with her husband in 2017. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to take my youngest to see him or my wife more than once. His were by far the most enjoyable shows I have ever been to, and I have seen many of the greats. His rapport with the audience was special, his music great and he really did look to be enjoying himself each time. RIP to one of the true greats.
"Gonna leave this world for a while." Every time I hear that, I think to myself, "I wish he could come back." - June of 2024, & Still VERY SADLY MISSED!! Thank Barelypostvids for these 20 songs you DID post. An Unbelievably Fantastic Show!!
So very true, a TRUE MUSICIAN, & what he created & left for us will continue to be played for decades to come. We all have to take it upon ourselves to play it for our children. I did when they were YOUNG, & they STILL love it, & now my grandchildren know & enjoy a lot of it too!! They like it for the same reasons WE do - it's TRUE, HONEST, REAL MUSIC. It's FUN Music. He put his soul (& often his sense of humor) into his music, so in that way, he WILL be with us FOREVER!! I know no one here will EVER stop enjoying his music. Peace!!
What a great song should do…tell a story….and Tom, imo is the best rocker AND songwriter of all time….he OOZED American blues rock n roll from every pore….no phony horse shit, just him and his brothers making music….Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs play a good bit of the Heartbreakers stuff and Mike’s own stuff is incredible , it’s in RUclips
I was teaching in Japan after a bad break up and was really emotionally lost when I discovered Tom Petty and this album and it truly saved my sanity. I've been listening to it constantly since then (1999)
This version is how Tom and the Heartbreakers performed it at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010. It was a spiritual ride of genius. So glad I saw Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers before Tom was gone from us. We were the same age, born only about 2 weeks apart. My thanks until perhaps we meet elsewhere.
I could listen to this song all day. One of the most beautiful expressions in rock and roll history of regret, lament but at the same time, ironically, freedom.
I've seen Tom Petty in concerts a few times and twice outdoors on beautiful summer nights in Hartford. I'm always amazed at the wide age range of fans that he has. His music appeals to everyone and I just love it when there are 20,000 people singing FREEFALLING in unison. goosebumps!!!!!!!
I still can't even speak about him without copious tears. It's made me go back many years, even as far as The Byrds. I was blessed to grow up when I did, being the perfect age (13) when the Beatles arrived. The tremendous impact of these folks from about 1961 to 1971 has shaped music forever. Thank God. Miss Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and so many more. Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Winwood, Perry, don't you dare go anywhere.
I love Tom Petty, I used to live in So. Cal& I had the fortune of seeing him in concert. Great show, great music 🎶. He left us way too soon, he was only 66
I'm still bummed about it.....Tom was too fanatical about being where he said he would be for his concert appearances, and it ended up costing him his life.....No one would have cared if he postponed a few of the concerts for medical reasons.......
@@evanmorrow1234Exactly my point Evan. Meanwhile, a little girl misses out on growing up with her grandpa Tom - from whom she could have learned guitar.
You almost never see Mike Campbell's name on "greatest guitarists" lists. But my god, that man can play. And he never draws attention to himself, never makes it all about him. He's always right there inside the song, playing off Tom and his bandmates. And he's so consistent. His timing and his feel for the song are always just perfect.
Legend...sitting here on a Sunday afternoon on Fathers day listening to Tom Petty, hoping that my kids one day remember this music and say “my dad used to love this” Thank you Tom Petty
This song has helped me through a lot. I would help through a lot of heart ache and when my dad introduced Tom Petty to me 11 years ago I've been a fan since. Thank You Tom, see you in July for philly!
Will miss him as long as I Iive. No one compared to his music, his voice, his concerts--too much to list as there are too many unforgettable songs to list. Tom, I'll never stop singing along at the top of my lungs. RIP
Our family was in Bavaria the summer of 1965 with Dad showing us where he served in WW2. We met the German family who befriended him at 20, drove Mom's brand new red Jag at top speed on the autobahn to see what it could do, drank at a huge beer garten with men dancing in lederhosen. Bavaria was memorably green. At the Wall with my new Brownie a young solder pointed his rifle at the then ignorant American kid of 16.
Confess that I have paid little attention to Tom Petty over the years - another hit song band among so many from the late 70s but watching, listening to this, I get a LOT. Great guitar playing great musicians all around with a lovely intentional and heartful presence. So glad this concert is online for us. It's almost tragic how many good bands came forward in my days. Couldn't take them all in. But this one is so clearly on in the direct sincere way I love. Showmen like the Stones, Bowie etc, etc are great but this is the stuff that warms our hearts and spirits deep down.
Jeff Lynne got the idea to go up an octave vocally..................We're torn up to pieces here about Tom here in Gainesville, FL. May this rare, kind, gifted individual Tom Petty rest in utmost peace. We'll be there, Tom, to join you in rock n' roll heaven!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something about this live version really gets me. I think the instrumentation is better on the record, but it’s hard to say which version is ultimately better. In this live performance I especially love the falling of the vocals after the “free fallin” line. I like it better than the falling voice on the record. Either way, it is so genius and it paints such a beautiful image. God what a legend.
@@jeframp3805 He's using a backing track for the chorus. They've taken the original studio take and added some delay over it, and then Tom sings on top of that. Probably because by this point he couldn't hit that high A anymore.
@@patriciofernandez2711 deffo . It is exactly like the original vocal but lots of echo. every time he performs it it sounds the same too. I think even live in the 80s that part was playbacked. Listening to the Heartbreakers instantly drops me back into the 1970's and my drafting class where the instructor had four large speakers in the corners of our classroom. He played KZAM radio station from Seattle. KZAM played a lot of Tom Petty. And Joni Balter hosted the station.

Listening to the Heartbreakers instantly drops me back into the 1970's and my drafting class where the instructor had four large speakers in the corners of our classroom. He played KZAM radio station from Seattle. KZAM played a lot of Tom Petty. And Joni Balter hosted the station.
