I attempted to do a conversion to my Ford F800 hauler and I never found the exact 6 speed fuller I was looking for. I wanted an overdrive model. I ended up putting a Fuller RTO9513 behind my 8.3 Cummins. That's a 13 speed with 1 overdrive. These are the simplest transmissions to work on. Complete teardown/overhaul manuals for each model makes it easy. I overhauled mine by myself. My 8.3 was a p-pump model with about 50 hp added. I had about 260 hp total. The 10 or 13 spd trans swap does fit in a dodge frame pretty well. I have a 98.5 2500 with a eaton 13spd overdriven trans. It fit in pretty well with a little bit of a body lift. And with a dual disc havent had a slippage issues and it has 7 liters of CAT in front of it. I thought about going the same route with a six speed eaton but when you find a 13 for cheap why not? Never the less great swap and looks great.
I used to drive a DAF 45 truck here in the UK & that had the 5.9 Cummins with a manual box, the electric power line/utility companies and military had 4x4 versions of that truck also. If you draw a blank on finding a 4x4 box in Canada or North America that may be a last resort. Love the videos keep them cummin.
I drive a road tractor and have been very interested in putting a medium nonsynced transmission in a light duty, I would prefer a 13 speed though, drives like a 8 speed usually but you can split the top end and they have a fantastic triple over drive.
To convert the fs5406 to overdrive you have to swap the input shaft and Swap out 3 gears 1 on the main shaft and 2 on the counter shaft and that converts it but your shift pattern is backwards in 5th and 6th. You have to swap some parts from a fso6406 shift housing to fix the pattern
Honestly i prefer the simplicity of trucks. You can specifically build a truck to suit your lifestyle. Exactly what im doing with a 1966 ford f250 i found hardly a mile from our shop on the way to a job. I hardly ever noticed it where the guy had parked it. He wanted a $4k enclosed trailer for the truck, so i bought him a trailer lol! Keep looking there out there!
God's honest truth. I have an early 04 6 speed HO quad cab long bed 2wd. 50/50 traffic/highway I get 20.5 consistently in winter and 19.5 in summer. Worse economy in summer because the AC is on morning and night. But I'm in Houston which is completely flat and at sea level and I don't drive over 65 with a 2wd manual transmission. So maybe you couldn't consider me real world because most people don't have those driving conditions. It's about as good as it can get honestly.
Yeah. I’m skeptical since there’s no overdrive. I’m not going to say it’s impossible but still. I have an 05 with a 6.7 and NV5600 and I get about 23mpg if I keep around 70-75mph, but I have a ton of work into making mine what it is.
I'm here in the US are we referring 20km per gallon or miles per gallon? If it's km per gallon that's egual to about 12.5 miles per gallon which is horrible compared to my 05.5 5.9 with a G56 i average 14 city and 17 highway. But at the same time I'm on my second rebuild in 230000 miles and don't dare to run anything hotter than 100hp tune or shit goes poof haha. Ultra fast learning curve. What kind of torque will the Eaton handle?
same trans I have in my 75 F250 cummins, you can switch them to OD pretty easy. change input shaft, countershaft drive gear and you swap the gearset that used to be 5th that becomes your now 6th OD
305hp, 555 lb/ft torque. HO for 03 and 04. I have an 04 with nv5600, stock no tuner. I'm debating on G56 or Eaton w/overdrive. The gear spacing in the 5600 always felt strange, so I guess I need to drive the other two (with 24v and 4.10 gear) to see which is best. With Eaton, I would need to source t-case also.
The 48re in stock form is lack luster, but the 48re is easy to upgrade to take insane power. Many of the newer 6.7 owners swap to the 48re because the newer trans can not be built to take the power. The NV5600 is the stock standard. Its considered to be a very stout 6 speed. Just a lot of unnecessary work for no gain. ATS, RevMax, Sonax, FirePunk, PDD just to name a few make the 48re's to take up to 1500hp and 2500lb tq.
After putting a tune on my '04 24 valve Cummins, and pulling a heavy equipment trailer with a skid-steer on it, I couldn't keep a clutch in it. Running the NV5600 trans, the stock clutch gave up at 60K miles. Went with an aftermarket clutch that was supposed to solve the problems...... next clutch at 110K miles. Then, after talking to the shop mechanic at the company I drove for, discovered a little company called VALAIR in Mineral Wells,TX. I had them install their ceramic/kevlar single disc clutch. It has a 3400# pressure plate and is rated for 500HP/1000TQ. I've now got 238K on the truck and have had no clutch problems. Valair makes clutches for just about anything. They specialize in big truck clutches and pickups. This guy with the Eaton 6 speed might want to check them out....since his clutch is fading away....
11:08 "when you hit the clutch, it wants to keep going" Yes, my bone stock (other than exhaust) early '04 305/555 with the stock 6 speed does exactly the same thing. It's worse when your climbing a hill with a load on with your foot in it. You have to let off the fuel before putting in the clutch....
Manual transmissions are all right but I'm not a big fan for pickup trucks. I have an FS 5406 behind a 12 valve and it's nice but my 48re built with an override manual lockup is waaay badass in comparison. I tow heavy with both.
Drove a wildland engine over the summer. International cab/chassis, Cummins with a manual 6 speed. 1100 gallons of water 4x4. THAT needed the 10 speed! For a Dailey driver and that year where it’s gcvw isn’t more then 18Klbs? I bet the 6 speed is plenty. Good mileage! My woreout 04 duramax only gets 17mpg at best. I’m looking at building my own type 6 wildland engine from a dodge 5500, very tempted to do this swap. Thanks for the video!
That SAE2 bell/motor plate will not fit into a 1st gen without deleting the heat and AC to allow cutting the firewall about 6 in up past the trans tunnel. Found this out when installing a medium duty Allison 1000 6 Speed. Im loving the dubble over drive. 55mph(88kph) is 1250rpm in 6th 100kph(62mph) 1425rpm. I went with a CA Conversations motorplate wiring and computer, and had the trans built to 1800tq by Hulon Fox Transmission in Dallas tx.
An Allison 1000 would probably be a lot simpler. Fairly easy swap into most applications. Truck computer needs to be or programmed for manual trans. Then a tcm for trans, obviously adapted to whichever application
The air is very simple on the 10 speed. You could use a train horn sir tank and run one air line to the trans and run the 2 small lines to the splitter. Simple. But agree 10 is a little much.
I just watched the video and loved it I’m going to have to do some research for my 03 rams 3500 4x4 I keep blowing ATS 48re I’m ready for a swap to stick with overdrive and transfer cases
I put a 9 speed in my 96 back in 2000 u can still start out in 7 th gear unless you are tractor pulling 6 spd is good but you can find a 6spd od Eaton but they are hard to find
My jaw about hit the floor when I seen this video posted. I wanted to get a Eaton sooooo bad for the 83 f350 dt360 build since it would have made things a whole lot cheaper then running a zf6 and a adapter plate from Carson. The problem is the 4x4. He’s going to have to do one of 3 things, make an adaptor to a np271-3, buy a truck load of np205s and replace them every time he changes oil lol, or buy a super expensive drop box from atlas or scs. There were np273s made divorced for Chevy medium duty trucks but it was passenger side drop. Other medium-heavy duty trucks use divorces t-cases but they are massive and heavy.
The _only_ reason to consider mating a ten speed to an engine with a 1500 rpm powerband is if you are willing to spend that much to keep your revs in the 400 rpm sweet spot. That is what multi-range transmissions are for: engines that are meant to do their best work between 1300 and 1700 rpm. Hell, Mack for years equipped their vocational trucks with a five speed, because Mr. Mack in the 1960s engineered a diesel engine - called the maxidyne high torque rise - that could operate under load all the way from 1050 rpm to 1900, which remains unprecedented for engines in that class. Of course, that five speed transmission was enormous, because to get that kind of power at 1050 rpms you needed some impressive torque numbers, and that demanded some beefy equipment to transmit. The 300 HP Macks I was driving in the '90s made 1650 lb ft at those low revs. Mack transmissions are 50% bigger than Road-Rangers and almost twice as heavy.
Hey awesome video as always. I bet that old goat has low kms lol.. anyways I got a question, what SAE flywheel housing did you use? I didn't think that the older ISB 24 valve housings would fit the common rail? dodge common rail is quite different than the industrial common rail, (industrial common rail versions have the gears on the back of the eng and not allowing the SAE housing to be installed on a dodge common rail) any help would be greatly appreciated, Hello from Newfoundland. keep the videos coming.
I had a '73' F100 w/a 390 and a granny-4... You clutched that off the light in 2nd also. (should have never sold that truck, but my EX didn't like it) Got rid of that cheating hussie, but now I want my F100 farm truck back. (probably would have put a 460/C6 in it.. I was 20something)
If you've got a problem with your highway mileage or something, just go with a numerically lower final drive ratio. Those are more efficient anyway and rob less power. You're talking about starting out in 3rd sometimes, well there's your problem. I'm pretty sure you've got an 80 in there and you can run a 3.23 in those. Probably a pretty good RPM on the highway there.

Mike Skidmore any way you could put up a video with a description of your setup? I have this setup RTO 6610 and a pull clutch. Having some issues trying to get the clutch linkage sorted out
I know he's probably figured it out by now, but I worked on an International medium duty crane truck that was a 6x6. I don't remember what the trans was other than it was manual, but it had an ISB (it couldn't get out of its own way with the weight of the crane and weights).

When I drive the 6 speed EMPTY I start in 2 then 4 & 6, makes it a 3 speed and that’s plenty Empty....
In my 6 speed that means I gotta recline in 2nd to get to 4th

This is a fantastic idea and well executed. This is the perfect trans for a Sterling/Ram 4500 or 5500.
A Spicer 6+1 would be much better...
What about the Aisen 6spd that comes in them?
@@machinist7230
You are correct. The New 2020 Dodge 5500 is rated to tow a 35,000 trailer, using the AISIN automatic transmission. Plus you can get 4x4. The AISIN is a MEDIUM DUTY TRUCK TRANSMISSION with two P.T.O. outputs. All HOTSHOT DRIVERS use AISIN.

See this truck all the time around Fruitland road and on the QEW Sweet rig never knew it had an Eaton. Nice work!
Yup I did this several years ago to mine.
My Grandpa put an Eaton Fuller overdrive 10 speed in his first gen years ago. I like this 6 speed too!
the riddle of the manuals. Nice swap. would be cool to find divorced transfer with high being beyond 1:1
For the clutch issue, I would give South Bend Clutch a call.
South bend is the way to go in my honest opinion
Nice, I put a Eaton Fuller FSO-6406a in my F350. Even manged to do it with no lift. I am now running a divorced NP205 were my carrier bearing used to be.
Short rear shaft and long front shaft ?
@@xmo552 yes, now I have a carrier bearing for the front drive shaft
@@jaredwitmer4836
Thanks. I've been considering doing a divorced 205 in something I've got brewing.
What did you do for the clutch release
@@WeldWerx made a bracket that mounted on the side of the transmission to use a puller cylinder from eastwood plumbed into my stock master cylinder. I drilled the stock lever that activates the clutch to mount the other side of the cylinder.
Sounds like a great transplant, I'm curious which transmission did you use? Pn#?
An Eaton 2 speed rear end would be neat in that. You can get them with the electric shifter.
I used to drive a DAF 45 truck here in the UK & that had the 5.9 Cummins with a manual box, the electric power line/utility companies and military had 4x4 versions of that truck also. If you draw a blank on finding a 4x4 box in Canada or North America that may be a last resort. Love the videos keep them cummin.
you can just tell in this video if you guys were not friends already you definitely are after this video..... great video
This is easily one of my new favorite episodes.
So how long till you build one?
I drive a road tractor and have been very interested in putting a medium nonsynced transmission in a light duty, I would prefer a 13 speed though, drives like a 8 speed usually but you can split the top end and they have a fantastic triple over drive.
A triple over drive in a pickup would send it flying down a race track. I wouldn't be surprised if that could hit 150mph.
She’s well used :) Awesome content as always.
find someone who looks at you the way rich looks at patrick while talking bell housing. rich, you're a legend my friend. best wishes from texas
Nice to see a manual conversion.
I have sprinter van, gmc 3500, and civic on my list of manual swaps.
Canadian test drive: where to? Timmies eh! Hello from Fort Mac. Thanks for the vids.
damn when you said Eaton Fuller I was thinking there would be some splitters or range change in there!
LOVE THIS VIDEO , Need to have more builders like him in and talk about the pro's and con's
Again Great Video Thanks Rich
Just discovered this channel, this is awesome, especially being Canadian.
He needs a Fabco transfer case out of an 80s International S1800 4x4.
I have one. I'm going to put it behind a DT 466 and Fuller 5 speed.
That's the only problem just not 4 wheel drive
i think too many people default to "it gets around 20" I'm not buying it, but its a cool truck and a cool swap
Joe schmo no kidding... real world it probably never gets over 16-17
God's honest truth.
David Blaisdell Miles per gallon we still refer to here in Canukistan.
same trans I have in my 75 F250 cummins, you can switch them to OD pretty easy. change input shaft, countershaft drive gear and you swap the gearset that used to be 5th that becomes your now 6th OD
You can swap some parts out in the shift housing from a fso6406 to fix your shift pattern
Love this trans swap! I call it the Sick Speed
Very smooth shifting for such a big transmission.
11:08
"when you hit the clutch, it wants to keep going"
Yes, my bone stock (other than exhaust) early '04 305/555 with the stock 6 speed does exactly the same thing.
It's worse when your climbing a hill with a load on with your foot in it.
You have to let off the fuel before putting in the clutch....
Yep it’s still Rich’s fault I have dodge !
Yup I like using the clutch to shift my pickup and in my work truck 10spd I like to float.
Good ol 28MT. Threw one in my military 6.2 and I swear it had more torque than the engine itself did.
Yep, 10spd overdrive (reversed 4th and 5th) is what needs to go in the Ford behind the cat.
I run a 05 Dodge Ram 3500 with the NV5600 six speed with a Pac brake exhaust brake in it.
An Allison 1000 would probably be a lot simpler. Fairly easy swap into most applications. Truck computer needs to be or programmed for manual trans. Then a tcm for trans, obviously adapted to whichever application
I have an 02 7.3 with ZF 6-speed and love that combo.
The air is very simple on the 10 speed. You could use a train horn sir tank and run one air line to the trans and run the 2 small lines to the splitter. Simple. But agree 10 is a little much.
Cool truck! No overdrive needed since 1st is so slow. Just need bigger tires or change the axle ratio.
I just watched the video and loved it I’m going to have to do some research for my 03 rams 3500 4x4 I keep blowing ATS 48re I’m ready for a swap to stick with overdrive and transfer cases
I'm glad mine came with a 6spd.
Allisonn trans gave my buddy problems 5 times in a row due to upgraded turbo, now I know what to tell him to do!
I put a 9 speed in my 96 back in 2000 u can still start out in 7 th gear unless you are tractor pulling 6 spd is good but you can find a 6spd od Eaton but they are hard to find
Great video!!! Looking at the body of this pickup I was reminded why I'm happy to be away from that nasty road salt in Canada!!!
Two clutches in 7 months and multiple issues with the prior auto in 12 months might indicate another issue. Wonder what kind of mileage it's seeing.
Popped up again. This one I'll watch a second time.
What an awesome project! Thanks for the video. Please do more videos like this.
This is a great style of video. Looks like fun. Large 2 cream too plz
I always chuckle at your videos cos we have the exact same hairstyle. Think it goes with the jobs lol
You have single handedly made me form respect for Canadians.
The air is not difficult on a ten speed. One supply line, two go to the shifter. And they don't use much air.
And you don't need to use every gear.
If you're light in weight you can use just the top ha;f of the box....
Cool video. Lots of helpful tips. Thanks. I'm looking to do a similar swap in a 1952 GMC 2 ton.
There’s a guy with a a white mega cab 6.7 dually in billings Montana with a 10 speed Eaton in his. Pretty sick tow rig
(should have never sold that truck, but my EX didn't like it)
Got rid of that cheating hussie, but now I want my F100 farm truck back.
I just picked up my Fuller swap for my turd gen I really would like to see how he did the clutch pedal. My truck is currently a 48re no pedal
Wouldnt it be easier to swap in a NV5600 in there, my 2005 has this setup and it works well.
That's what I was wondering also

I know he's probably figured it out by now, but I worked on an International medium duty crane truck that was a 6x6. I don't remember what the trans was other than it was manual, but it had an ISB (it couldn't get out of its own way with the weight of the crane and weights).
