  • Join me and Miguel - SVP of product from #Ultraleap discussing their new significant update called Hyperion. This is the biggest update they have done so far. Introducing new key features for #handtracking and bringing it to existing hardware such as the one inbuilt into #SomniumVR1 headset.
Each #VR1 purchased with hand-tracking module will have these updates automatically included + Somnium and Ultraleap provide PRO-SUMER license with each hand-tracking module so that you do not need to worry about complex licensing fees or terms in case you are a developer, company or simply a consumer.

What do you think about this update? Are you excited about high precision hand tracking + ability to track external objects in VR?

Maybe but, might it someday be possible to have a Somnium HMD with standalone features or a very limited 'tester's Run' edition of a headset? (Not neccessarily Somnium VR1, maybe later)

    The feature I would love:
Ability to use hands like controllers more naturally.
Imagine you point at something with your thumb at a 90 degree angle from pointer finger, then while continuing to point at it, you move your thumb down to touch your pointer finger to click. Maybe different angles are clicks on different buttons? Squeeze both hands together to go to the menu. Etc.
One reason pinching doesn't work well is because you naturally tend to move the finger you are pointing with and click on wrong thing. Unless you use AVP like eye tracking for pointing.
Right now, it's impossible to only use hand tracking for controller based games.

No mention of improvements to tracking volume which is the greatest weakness of machine vision hand tracking. Also no mention of arm/shoulder tracking which could help counter the low tracking volume. The most interesting application of hand tracking to me is for learning sign language but not being able to do signs which involve touching head or chest is quite a significant restriction. Still definitely a "nice-to-have" and I'd expect the addon cost to be cheaper than a set of Lighthouse-tracked controllers but the pinacle of hand tracking remains gloves like DiverX Contactgloves.

15:00 - Really? Feels like Apple showed a bunch of forced hand gestures, and naturally people questioned why UltraLeap hadn't done it yet, and now here it is. Was this actually that difficult that only Apple, UltraLeap, etc. struggled to accomplish this?

10:45 I guess having open source software benefits hardware makers, so they can save money on developing software by themselves. But how it benefits software makers? Who will pay for their pizza and coffee? 🤨
