Really comes down to your system, settings, and what apps you play imho. For me with a Q3/i913900k/rtx4090 I get the best results using my official link cable connected to my z790mb usb 3.2 type-c port. With flight and racing sims I get better distance clarity, fewer compression artifacts, and 7-10ms less latency compared to any wireless options. Other than sims I much prefer the freedom of being wireless. Properly setup I don’t see any significant differences between Air Link and Virtual Desktop. I mainly use Air Link but this is purely a personal preference thing. I will say that Virtual Desktop is much easier to setup because you don’t need to know how to properly use ODT or the meta link pc app device settings. Actually, Steam Link is even a bit easier so you may want to try that as well. In any case I’m glad you’ve found something that works well for you.
I wonder how much of my issue is half life. I should test other games with the link cable, steam link, and air link. Maybe Alyx just works better with VD on my setup
@@ulrichfirelord I don't think so because HLA is just about the best VR game for finding it's own best settings. All you need to do is use its default graphics settings. Just make sure to set your SteamVR global visual settings manually (not auto) to 100%. I'm not sure but VD might automatically be doing this for you.

Just bought it off your recommendation! I’ve been looking at it for so long, but at the exact same thoughts beforehand. Excited to try it later today! That said, you should drop your referral link in this video!
I had the link cable stutter too, try disabling hardware accelerated GPU scheduling, It worked for me, no more skippy, stuttery gameplay on the link cable!
they should go to jail for making a 15 dollar product and selling it for 80. Literally the same experience with a 10-15 dollars product from amazon. Unfortunately most don't know
Why don't most know about this? It's logical that a simple cable shouldn't cost more than $10 even if it is of high quality. When their headset, with all the optics, screens, sensors and processors costs $250, then how can a cable for it cost $80?
It is a steep price but it is also an fiber optic cable not copper and allows full charge rate and bandwidth @ 5m. When the quest first came out they needed a high bandwidth cable but through updates they bandwidth requirements dropped and cheap cables work.
@@mrzon9344 Lol! No, it is not a fiber optic cable! 😂 Fiber optic cables require completely different transmitter and receiver. You cannot swap a copper cable for a fiber optic cable while keeping the type-c connectors.
@@aditya_on_youtubefact check.. they are indeed fiber optic. Hence the higher price.. and to those also unaware, an aftermarket cable is significantly heavier, (about 6x at 16ft) than a fiber optic. I just went through buying an aftermarket and now I’m about to go return it because I felt like a had a lead weight dragging my head down. It was extremely uncomfortable
I have tried them all and Virtual Desktop with a good dedicated Wifi 6 router (I used a TP-Link AX3000 - don't use the ethernet cable that comes in the box) running at 2401Mbps is fantastic.
i tested every way to connect to my pc wirelessly on my quest 3 and virtual desktop has the best streaming quality in my opinion, that may be because i was using AV1, nothing else has AV1 currently except for virtual desktop
Virtual Desktop is the best. Lets you play Oculus Rift games and steam VR. Just Works. As for games to play in VR. Phasmaphobia and The Forest support VR and are fun in multiplayer
Same problem i had with my quest 2, but i spent money on 2 kiwi usb-c cables before getting virtual desktop. I can truly say, with an eero wifi6 next to me worked so much better! I just use the cable to keep the headset charging. So cookies to the devs for the app and gladly with pay for it again for my next quest 3
@@Dickachu2 I can tell by my own experience… I have a quest2 AND bought a quest3 with the same meta account, then all applications I bought for the quest 2 (and quest 1) are listed and available (already paid) for my quest3… Then I just downloaded virtual desktop in my quest3… it worked perfectly.
I will hve to correct you there.. The Meta Link Cable IS a Type-C cable, But USB-C is JUST the connector. It doesn't say anything else about that cable. Similar to HDMI and DisplayPort. The noodle-y bit itself is actually a Fibre Optic cable. and this is VERY important. In VR, a 5 meter cable is generally seen as the sweet spot, but a normal USB cable, one made of copper, generally craps out around 3 meters. There are manyways to solve this and one of which is turning that electrical signal into a laser and blasting that through a cable, this is much less prone to signal loss and keeps a lot of the integrity of that data. The problem is... The price. THe Technology it self isn't cheap and you can easily mess this up, so buy a cheaper alternative may harm you more than do good. Personally, I would consider the 80 dollar price tag a mostly fair price. I would love to have seen them sell it for 60 dollars but it is Meta and as a company they still need money.
I, too, ignored Virtual Desktop for the longest time. I ended up getting it in January for UEVR, and it is great. The best part about it, imo, is that it can be left running full time so I can just stick the headset on and be running PCVR right away.
Same experience I had with the Link Cable couple years ago when I bought a Oculus 2. Now I bought a Quest 3 and I went with Virtual Desktop. Miles better, and Im currently (temporarily) on WiFi lol.
For me Virtual Desktop consumes the least rescources on my PC, leaving more performance for the game. Steam Link also works pretty good, but it consumes more rescoureces and looks worse. I whish there were more options to fine tune in Steam Link. I have my VD settings to where HL Alyx looks very sharp, runs on constant 72fps (I'm not having the best hardware, so 99% lag free is huge, most lags are during loading screens), and I can rarely see compression artefacts. I'm using Quest 2. The downside is the bit more hastle you have to do to use VD. Sometimes I wanna play and put headset on, just to realise I haven't started VD on my PC. But then I can just use Steam Link to start VD and then switch to VD, without having to put the headset off my head. So having both things is nice. And if you don't wanna spend the money, I think Steam Links gets the job done.
I am considering purchasing VD because Oculus Link and Steam Link sometimes doesn't work when I play PCVR. Oculus Link doesn't launch sometimes whilst Steam Link launches but the game only launches on my pc and most frequently both don't have any audio even though I have the Oculus Virtual Audio Device and Steam Streaming Speakers in my sound control panel. I will probalby buy VD and test it out and hope it works with my RX7600 and Ryzen 5 3600. I also bought a cable for VR so I hope I don't regret buying VD as I would've wasted more money.
Don‘t get me wrong VD is really great. But you definitely had a faulty link cable or something is wrong with your USB port or something. I used multible link cables with quest 2 and 3 in situations with bad WiFi and the connection was always smooth with a clear picture. Sometimes the quest link software can bug out but a simple reconnect always fixed that.
thanks for you video, Seeking advice from you: I use Quest 3 + VD for wireless streaming to play DCS. I've tried to lower the in-game settings of DCS,and currently, the frame rate and effects are basically satisfactory. However, occasionally the 3D image on the Quest headset freezes while the image on the computer screen remains visible. I have no choice but to force quit the game. It's very annoying, especially when trying to view the map with F10 during big missions. I've already dedicated a great game wifi6 router for the computer and Quest headset, with the computer connected via Ethernet cable. It's confirmed to be a gigabit network. I wonder if you have encountered this situation? The VD image quality is great, but it's just not stable. It's very frustrating. Thank you all for your help! My Computer specs: i5 12600 + 4060ti + 32GB RAM.
I don't think I've had that happen to me yet. I'm sorry I can't be much help with this. the only other thing I could recommend is maybe make sure there's absolutely nothing in-between your quest and your Wi-Fi router. I had mine behind a tv once and it made the connection worse. once i moved the router out in the open it was a lot better. I hope you're able to get this fixed I know how frustrating these situations are. I hate when stuff like this happens.
Looking for advice here. I just got virtual desktop and notice that when I pair Bluetooth controllers to the quest only the joystick is recognized for gaming. I tried playing several steam games but I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong? Are 3rd party gamepad controllers not supported?
I've only used the controllers that came with my quest 2 so unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. Hopefully someone will see your question and be able to help. I hope you're able to figure this out. I know how incredibly frustrating stuff like this can be. I hate when you have a problem like this and you can't find an answer.
Virtual Desktop Beta! In the headset you need to click the 3 dots on the app. Opt into the beta version. 1.3.3 or something like that. Then, you need to hit the 3 dots again and hit “update.” Obviously, you need too update the PC VD version as well. A lot of the videos on it right now have a link for the oculus store that doesn’t work- you don’t need it!
I didn't even know there was a beta. What all does it let you do that's different? Well I mean you don't have to list everything lol. But I assume there's probably one or two cool things in there huh?
Hi, nice video You HAVE to play these games: -Red matter 1 and 2 - The walking dead sainst and sinners 1 and 2 -Vertigo remastered and vertigo 2 -Wanderer -Genotype -Arizona sunshine 2 -The room vr
So I just discovered the magic of virtual desktop. It just works. Period. Amazing. I do have a question though. My quest 3 still says air link is active. What’s that about?
I prefer to use cable . You can buy any USB 3.0 cable and it works perfectly for much less. On Virtual Desktop some games not lunching, Netflix doesn't work for me and after some time of playing the screen starts flickering. Maybe I could fix this issues but everything works for me properly with cable so why waist time and effort.
I'm glad the cable works well for you. I don't know why it sucks so bad for me lol. At least I'm able to play VR games though so I guess that's all that matters. It does bother me though. Like.. why doesn't the cable work right for me? I don't get it lol
@@ulrichfirelord I thing it depends on settings and game .I play mostly sim racing games, like Assetto Corsa and Automobilista 2 and cable works very well for me.
For me it’s the opposite, could be the cable but i bought 2 link cables (not original) from amazon and both charge slowly and give me random disconnects if i use the back ports of my pc, unless i use the front but then it says it’s only usb 2, also there’s alot of compression on link. Only issue i have with VD is that i get about 50 to 60 ms latency which is a bit high
@@penguinz3091 You have to use USB 3 .I bought my cable also from Amazon but the one that Meta recommended ; Anker. Anyway if WiFi and Virtual Desktop works well for anybody there is no reason to use cable.
Hello i use VD too but i noticed my game was stuttering really bad and lagging. I've used it before a year or 2 back and it did not do this and now that i reinstalled it now it stutters. Do you have any suggestions?
I also just recently got Virtual Desktop.. mainly for it's SBS support for games that work with reShade. and 3d video/photos. For more games. Into the Radius and Saint and Sinners (the first chapter) are amazing. Both you can just keep playing after the story ends. Saint n Sinners has an approx 28 in game day story, i kept playing till day 144.
hmmm, so you just unplug your main ethernet and plug pc into dedicated new router when playing VR? do you have, or could you suggest a vid to watch for setting this process up etc? I just got a quest 3 and I'm currently on ISP hardware for cable internet/wifi
Next time I stream I'll try to remember and explain how I have this set up. I'll come back here and time stamp or at least tell you what time it's at in the stream to see it. I don't have to unplug or plug anything in. It's always just set up and ready to go, but it might be easier for me to show instead of typing it out lol. I'll try to keep it short and sweet too so you don't have to watch a long explanation.
Does the router need to be a Wi-Fi 6E ? Or will my fiber optic 5G router work sufficiently? Granted that I plug my PC into the router with an ethernet?
The one I got is wifi 5 and it works pretty well. I'll probably upgrade someday, but for now it's good enough and still better than the other options I had.
It's been a while since I've done it, but you buy it from the oculus store like when you're wearing the headset, then download the free streamer app on the PC. Pretty sure that's all I had to do.
Beat saber #16 player of spain here. I was a link cable user, but I started to use virtual desktop when I got the quest 3. My pc has an AMD gpu, and I use a simple 50$ wifi 6 router. I have around 40 ms of delay and I can say it's totally playable, you get used to the delay, it isn't really a disadvantage specially compared to the link cable. Link cable has a LOT of delay, it's not like a HDMI / display port vr headset. Link has around 25 ms of delay, to that you gotta add the game delay 3-5 ms more. So in total link has around the 30 ms of delay. Said this even on rhythm games at fast speeds you get used to it, I prefer virtual desktop now that I got used to it, as it's just faster to get started and it also has better visual quality than link cable (Even increasing the bitrate of the link cable, it looks kinda blurry compared with virtual desktop)
Question - If I buy it for the primary account on my headset, can secondary accounts on the same headset use it without having to buy it again? That works for some games on quest and I was hoping it was the same deal for virtual desktop.
I haven't tried it, but I did find this Reddit post that might help www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/kd3bcl/if_i_get_virtual_desktop_on_my_pc_would_multiple/
@@ulrichfirelord Thanks for looking! That's all I really came across too. It's not quite the scenario I'm hoping to find out about. I have a quest 2 and a quest 3 with the same primary account so I can use a secondary account on one in order to play games together on both headsets even though the primary account is the only one that purchased the game. If I only had to buy VD once on the primary so both headsets could use it at the same time, that'd save me some moneyzzz.
@@bluebell1I think that was the problem with alyx. I use oculus killer which is a program that stops the oculus app and starts the wired connection directly in steam VR, I need to do this for some games including alyx. Basically the oculus app is running in the back using 20% of your CPU for no reason. Steam VR also takes a lot of juice but if you tweak the options to remove the home environment thing it's not that bad.
Unfortunately, i have a connection problem with the VD app. I install windows again, I restart the quest 3 and reinstalling the vd app on Quest 3 and the pc, but whatever I do, the vd app can't find my pc, the app problem suddenly start 1 week ago, before that I easily connect to my computer without any problem. I also don't add any app or change anything to my pc. Also, the Steam link app and air link apps are working without problem, and I use them right now for my pc vr gaming. This is really ridiculous for the paid app to have this kind of problem.
@denizenofclownworld4853 ya, i fixed it. The problem is, for some reason, the app can't check VD for license, and i stuck in loop. I fixed it with vpn and checked the license, and because this check is a one-time thing, now i can connect to my pc without a problem even if there is a network problem.
People sleep on the link cable for charging in my opinion. If you use the link cable (5 meters/16 feet cable) with the adapter that came in the box with the Quest 2/3, you can charge your headset even while you play. I have the link cable and I use virtual desktop to play wireless, until I'm low on battery and then it's time to use an incredibly long cable that keeps me flexible to play AND charge the headset. Something to keep in mind though is to use the Velcro strap to attach the cable to the bands of the Quest head strap, this will keep the usb-c connector and the quest usb-c port from being damaged by keeping the cable straight and not having it hang directly from the port.
@@ulrichfirelord yeah, I plug the cable to the charging adapter that came with the quest and plug it to the wall, and I use virtual desktop to play PCVR
I bought the cheapest router at Walmart and it works great. It works as a router, range extender, or an access point. It's pretty versatile for being like 30 dollars. Must be something wrong with your setup. I can't believe using VD over WiFi would give you better results than a direct cable connection. Perhaps the USB-C port on your laptop isn't running at full speed?
I bought Virtual Desktop when I bought my Oculus Go and ever since it was the first app I installed on a new headset. I have it on my Pico4, my Quest3 and will put it on any future headset. It works better than anything. It's not always perfect, but cables? On a wireless headset? What for? I see more people struggle with their cables than with their wireless connection.
It's heavily recommended to have the PC wired, yes. I haven't tried with wifi so I can't say how well it works that way, but it's probably guaranteed to be better wired.
@@ulrichfirelord Does the router also need to be Wi-Fi 6E ? Or will my fiber optic 5G router work sufficiently, granted that I plug my PC into the router with an ethernet?
All i want to do is setup virtual monitors inside virtual desktop. I see how to stream my pc desktop, but only one monitor at a time. I first installed this over a year ago and I could just about sweat that at the time I was able to setup multiple virtual monitors. Now coming back to it after at least 8 months I don't see that option anywhere. Has this been removed? Did it ever exist? Am I thinking of a different program? Does anyone know how to accomplish this either with this program or another? 3 monitors would due, but I would much rather be able to make as many as I want, up to 12.
I recommend OVR Toolkit for this as you can spawn as many windows as you want in VR and it has multi monitor support ^ ^ I use it to access discord in VR without having to switch from vr app to VD
There's an option to add more monitors if you open up the options menu (using your left hand pinch or using the options button on the quest controller)
Well.. there is a new oculus link app for pc that includes rtx4000 support - which I presume is av1 encoding too - and I think steamlink recently got updated too. So is this still valid? Is virtual desktop better than the new oculus link app?
You buy the VD app in the oculus store (the one when wearing the headset) and then you download the free streamer app for your computer and they connect with each other and that's all you'll need.
@@ulrichfirelord good to know!! Would you know the required connection specs if i do not have my pc connected via ethernet (im on a wifi extender with a 5G signal)
Unfortunately they heavily recommend your computer to be wired to your internet. I was using a Wi-Fi extender previously when using steam link and air link and it wasn't very good, maybe if you get your Wi-Fi extender as close as possible and you're on 5 GHz Network with really good internet it won't be too bad, but I really can't say for sure. What I can say though is I do not have Wi-Fi 6 yet and even though my computer is wired, my Wi-Fi 5 router works great. If you go ahead and try I hope it works for you.

With the encode bit rate set to 500 and link sharpening set to normal in the Oculus Debug Tool, also 72hz and max res on the pc app, so far I haven't found any other method that beats my fiber optic link cable. I'm glad VD works for people, but for me it's poor in comparison .
06:22 unfortunately being excited for steam link and having it also not be very great for me was what made me decide to buy virtual desktop and the inspiration for this video. I'm glad it's working for you though that's awesome!
Virtual desktop is way better. The options allow me to have a much clearer image with no noticeable added latency. Tho steam link is good and easy to use. Virtual desktop is the best in class by far.
Spent 3 weeks drinking around with that cable and air link. And when it did work it that annoying ahhh sound/music that never stops. I think meta has abandoned or give minimal effort to that environment because they want you in their system to spend money. Steam link has been working fantastic out of the box. This vid seals the deal on VR desktop though.
You technically can by doing something called "reverse tethering" on the quest, you give the quest internet data vía USB, however experience can differ, for me it works nearly perfect with some rare latency spikes for about a second, where as my friend can't use this method at all because the latency always hovers around 200 So yeah, you "can" but can't guarantee it'll work or not
@@MooshPaw whats terrible about it, just pressing a VD button is too difficult? and u get to be wireless.. better than completely tethered like prehistoric age
Simply said: Virtual Desktop was more developed than Air Link. They already polished it in much better use because VD was there already for some time before Air Link was added. Also entering SteamVR with VD is much easier and faster than with Oculus/Meta Link. I bought almost immediately VD when i got Q2 and it works very well. VD can even enable Snapdragon Upscaling option - you should do it - because it makes picture much sharper. Especially on Quest 3 you will see the sharpness more. Seperated WiFi router is very advised. And if you bought VD for Q2, you can use it already for Q3. Still one price for all. Nice! Expect Pico need own VD. I bought VD btw when there is sale, so 30% off on VD makes it even more cheaper!
Yeah, it was working long before Air Link was even announced... we even had to hack our headsets to get it to work because it wasn't allowed or supported... and now... it's still the better option for wireless VR, and even just flatpanel media on a giant screen, or just watching 3D movies etc...
That's interesting bc i was thinking the same thing about not buying it for the exact same reason great video and justification maybe ill give it download again and try it out
There's another option now though. Valve put out Steam Link for free, which is another free way to play Steam games wirelessly on the Quest 2/3. Virtual Desktop is still the best though.
Airlink - as he mentioned in the video has been around for long. Quest 2 and 3 both have it. Virtual Desktop - again as he said $20. I recently bought VD myself after thinking Airlink would be just fine... and boy o boy, Airlink works sure.. but VD just blows it out the water xD (WiFi 6 router, 5G network and all just for my Quest) but Airlink just isn't able to truly keep up, even though it at least works.
VD is the bomb I've been rocking it since the quest Classic back in 2019. But steam link is good too. Air link is just crap. I can't believe quest can't even get its own wireless protocol right.
Ya, I’ve been rocking with VD for +4yrs starting with my Q1. It even worked better than Link when it first came out. Both Link and Air Link have improved a lot over the last year or so imho. With my Q3 and QPro/rtx4090 I find I still get the best results with a link cable. Other than sims, I like wireless a lot better. With the right settings I don’t see any significant differences between VD and Air Link. So to me it really just comes down to personal preferences imho:
@@tomc1380 I stopped using Meta Airlink completely. Don't need it. VD and Steam (which don't seem to be too different when it comes to connectivity) are perfect solutions so there's no need at all for me to use air link (Plus I really hate the interface). ;)

Meta should include Virtual Desktop free.
MS Flightsim or iRacing maybe?

The best part about it, imo, is that it can be left running full time so I can just stick the headset on and be running PCVR right away.
one of the best £10 I ever spent, great for playing videos too
Ive wasted so much time with immersed. It sucks. Virtual desktop just works, definitely a fan of it
Same experience I had with the Link Cable couple years ago when I bought a Oculus 2.
Yeah I usually end up finishing with my right hand as well 🤷♂
Heh.
I lost my left hand to half way thru half-life Alyx too. This is crazy because I couldn’t fix it. I had to restart the game from the beginning
Steam Link is not even in the same ballpark as any other method. You'd probably have a better experience if you knew what you were doing.
@@denizenofclownworld4853 then why is it so many people use it and there's literally the SteamVR application you need to run with SteamLink...

I was resistant too but after trying with the quest3 refund policy in mind I realised $20 was quite a bargain, this is great stuff

thanks for you video, Seeking advice from you:
I use Quest 3 + VD for wireless streaming to play DCS.

That's why I download nalaluna latency mod. I cand fine tune the audio latency in beatsaber just like I want it. And that made VD with beatsaber great
Question - If I buy it for the primary account on my headset, can secondary accounts on the same headset use it without having to buy it again? That works for some games on quest and I was hoping it was the same deal for virtual desktop.

@@M-dv1yjnot even going to tell you how bizzare your like are! 🤷🏽♂. Get a decent brain maybe.
@@M-dv1yjkeep the lies flying. not paying attention to them!
@@Factsfun-kg4xc not only that they cost $1200, $450 and $370 respectively. 2 3070ti ‘s and 1 3080 ti. And the 16gb on my 3080ti laptop gives me better settings than a 3080 desktop🤷🏽♂️. In fact my 3070ti’s perform with desktop 3060ti’s and my 3080ti laptop keeps up with a desktop 3070-3070ti plus has 16gb vram.
Runs smooth and at 120hz. The only lies are the ones your telling yourself.
Virtual Desktop is awesome. Way better than airlink
No one once to hear you talk
tf you talking about lol, i hear him fine.
1) Complains the set up is NOT working
2) Buys a new router (actually an access point/router combo but whatever)
3) Gets Virtual Desktop
4) IT WORKS!!!
Attributing success to Virtual Desktop is ignorant, two variables changed.
The router doesn't have anything to do with the link cable though. I got the router after I realized VD was better than the other options.
As this video goes on I now know why I like this guy (in a hetero way off course!); His room resembles mine, he's thinking like I think sometimes and he's gotta be right around my age. Subbed on that alone. Well done my friend.
Definitely not hetero bro you crushing
I like this guy. I don't like many people on RUclips but this guy...he's alright.
