I love how this was shown to prove how valuable everyone's life is in a work of art. Most people never would look at a background dancer, and the documentary about Alice Barker is worth so much to me. She went through little recognition because people would never bother to spell her name correctly, and she would dance for free because it was something she loved to do. I have never met anyone that was happy just being a background dancer, and I think people have a lot to learn from Alice Barker.
There was a fantastic documentary a couple years ago called "10 Feet From Stardom" about backup singers and how under appreciated their art is. Miss Barker you are a Gem. What a fabulous dancer you were, what a positively joy to watch you. I am so very grateful for the people who took the time to make these films. Go Alice. Love and Hugs.. Judy-Joy
Alice Barker wasn’t joking when she said this music was amazing. It almost seems like a really fun, cheerful, workout. I would have loved to witness this!!
beautiful and talented dancers that they were back in the day, rip to the ones who have already passed away and God bless their families and friends left behind
I'm honored to celebrate and see your career with you Lady Barker. My GrandDad was a Jazz Musician in the 1940's and 1950's and often if you guys may have met. But its great to just see someone who was a twenty-something in the Harlem Renaissance.
In a way it is sad that so many actors, dancers, and extras have been in so many movies but they are never recognized. They are competent people who are good at what they do but they never have the opportunity to stand out in a lead role. Yet they show up again and again and again mainly because they love what they do and not because they are well paid. For Alice Barker, this is recognition well deserved. I am sure there are probably many more films in which she appeared and performed well in the role she was given. May she received all the accolades she has earned.
I love this! To see her face light up on such delight as she sees herself on video for the 1st time ever! Those who researched & brought this together for her are angels! 👏👏👏👏
My mother grew up in Harlem during the depression. She always said that they didn't have much money, but they had good neighbors, and they knew how to have a good time! Dancing was such a joy back then.
She had a really bright presence, I could really see how much joy and love she had for dancing, makes me wish I could go in a time machine and dance with her.😄
But Alice was born in 1912... Making her, if she was still alive, 108 years old... I assume every other girl in this video was around her age. Not sure the exact amount but I'mma guess less than 30 people that are over 100 are still alive... Chances are VERY slim that any of them are from this video.
What strikes me is how modern the dance moves are, and how athletic and talented everyone was. And the pianist-muah! This whole show is absolutely incredible!
They don't look any different from us today just another time.. Time is only here on earth and with time we age , beautiful young and full of life back to a child when we get older helpless and needy , the circle of life once a man twice a child.
I think they look so different to people today! So slim and lithe and there is an insouciance that is so prevelent even though this is the 1930's with the depression. They all look so healthy! No fake food and real social interaction (even if the black/white relations were pretty rocky).

Awesome look beneath the surface of a lovely lady stuck for a time in a nursing home. When I see an old person, walking around, like in their "elderly" years, I will think of Alive Barker, and give them a beautiful smile as if they were that lively 20 year old still..and still .. "Fabulous". Because that's who Alive was, in 1922 at 20 and when she was 102! Rock on Sisters and Brothers
Looking back at old videos like these helps me to remember that beauty is immortal. The people in this are no different than people now... The only thing that’s changed is how we live our lives. Thank you for putting this together for all of us! I really do enjoy watching wartime entertainers do their thing... The class and zest they had for life is palatable!
I personally think this type of music will never die. It has too much soul and spirit to die faster than the garbage that is playing. What's sad is that people don't get to see how valuable this type of entertainment is.
I thought it was odd for them to film that. These were probably either sold to adult movie theaters, or were destroyed, but a few of them were still around. *****
It's a great joy to find a treasure like Alice Barker in this video compilation and the one in 2014 when she was 102 and saw her movie shorts for the first time since doing those productions as a long-legged chorus girl. May God bless her dancing soul. Lovely to look at.
Thoroughly enjoyed these! Thank you so much for preserving this heritage. I remember them from when they were played on B&W TV on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid in the '70s.
Watching this, it feels like they're immortalized. We live on in what we leave behind. How beautiful to think you haven't truly left those who loved you.
I'm trying to figure out how it went from this amazing type of dancing to twerking and musically. I wish I was born in the amazing generation in the video. :(
Dzifa Akakpo cut the crap. It's not like racism is over now. People are still discriminated, and guess what? You can't change how people think about you.
Sonia Khatri where did I ever say that racism was over?? I know that people are still discriminated every day but back then it was a lot more prominent and out there and I'd rather not be born in an era where segregation and Jim Crow laws hold me back from a lot of achievements. You cannot possibly say that the 50's were better for people of colour....
Dzifa Akakpo every decade had it's ups and downs and I am sorry to say that we are living in one of the worst decades of life ever. Being an SJW won't solve your issues and neither will playing a victim card. People had it worse back then, that's true but it's horrible even today without those kind of repressions. People are fascists today in a different format and context.
He was a famous dancer and eventually danced and acted in early movies after sound was added to film. You may have heard the famous song by Jerry Jeff Walker. He wrote the song after a meeting in a jail cell with someone who borrowed the Mr. Bojangles name to conceal his identity from the police. The song is quite famous so that is why Mr . Bojangles may sound familiar to you if you are younger.
This is just Amazing, i can’t believe all the smiles in their happy faces. The music, the dance just makes me wanna dance! All those nice instruments like the piano and trumpet! It’s like dreaming. Me myself is very interested in these types of stuff and it really makes me wanna go back in time and i thought that way ever since I was little and I still do! It just amazes me
I would like to thank you for enlightening me of Alice Barker. She was magnificent to say the very least. May She be in Heaven dancing like she did in these great films. She was such a classic woman, even at the age of 102!
Diana Rodriguez Its called acting lady...with all the racism back then, I highly doubt they were actually that happy in real life. I could only imagine the shit they went thru smh
Yup, I sometimes sit and watch TCM, and i wonder where the hell all of the black short films, music videos and movies are? It's always the hundreds of white stuff being played. Damn our people were so talented back then. I'd rather watch them.
These were amazing it’s sad there is no music like this anymore or even musical performances like this I find it incredible Alice Barker lived to such an old age and truly enjoyed what she did which was dancing and performing
I love this era the dancing, singing and costumes. Miss Alice Barker could sho shake that thang. May perpetual light shine upon her soul and may she rest in peace❤
to everyone saying you wish you were born at the time of this video: please stop that being said, this is so lovely, love seeing how happy and energetic they all are. rest in peace.
Sorry this comment is ridiculously late, but I agree with the first part. People think things were 100% better back then, but they seem to forget that technology, the way we socialized, and other things for the most part were WAY less advanced. Plus, there were events such as The Great Depression and the World Wars which didn't benefit anyone. It's totally fine to be fascinated by those times, but it's pretty ignorant to act like nothing bad happened. You make a great point. And yes, may all their beautiful souls R.I.P. 🌹
Fgchnk Vfinki i dont see how THIS is talent. THIS anyone could do. Back then the choreography were sloppy and simple and now, they are in sync with each other when they dance
People were so classy and elegant back then. They also seemed to worry less and looked so much happier and content with their lives. While in the present day I feel like almost everyone is depressed or doesn’t like this or that. Such a loss..
I love America We have the finest ladies in the world!! Props to you Alice for staying around for 103 years and sharing this together with us. Rest In Peace.
She was adorable! In 2014 and back when she danced! I would love to see this type of music and dance come back! How blessed she was to get paid for something she loved so much! I know she is dancing in Heaven and loving every second of if! God Bless her! She was a special and lovely lady! I would like to know more about her life!
I love that when they dance, they don't care if they're on time or doing the moves the exact same. They just smile and have fun with it, and that's what dance should be❤
Juanita Moore from Imitation of life is one of the dancing girls in the jungle dance 3:06 girl on the right, she looks taller then the other girls. she was 99 years old when she passed away

+JustSimplyJackie Really? Thats very sad, beautiful dancer.

This makes me wonder if she ever reunited with her fellow dancers. I imagine them all dancing again up in heaven.
Wouldn't it be great to make a movie about them, in the style of "A League of Their Own." ? If Inwere a filmmaker, I would do it.

Very cute and joyful smile i love it when i saw it in the first video
She is purely smiling that means she must have loved every moment of itv

It's kinda like they're trapped in the film.
They are reunited and still having fun

She epitomizes "there are no small roles, just small actors": she always dances (with an inner radiance) as if the spotlight were upon her.
YES!!
She certainly stood out. Easy to spot. Natural talent and beauty to boot!
She was beautiful and knew she could dance!
When she saw herself dancing for the first time, in the other video of her, you could see that she was getting her groove back!
I'm not sure she ever lost it. 🙂

I'm trying to figure out how it went from this amazing type of dancing to twerking and musically. I wish I was born in the amazing generation in the video. :(
WilliMel hmmm you know that there was a lot of racism back then right😂 But I agree that the music and dancing is wonderful!
Irina0a same Hahaha
Dzifa Akakpo every decade had it's ups and downs and I am sorry to say that we are living in one of the worst decades of life ever. Being an SJW won't solve your issues and neither will playing a victim card. People had it worse back then, that's true but it's horrible even today without those kind of repressions. People are fascists today in a different format and context.
This is amaaaazing❣️❣️❣️
My Grandparents were 15-25 during these years. My Dad was soon to be born😎
God bless all of these beautiful legacies 💐
The black dude at 10:08 is Bill Robinson!!! THE Bojangles!
Happy Kid who is Bill Robinson? I feel like I’ve heard the name but idk
M Williams x
There's a lot of unnamed talent in those videos. People who deserve far more recognition than what they were given.
They All Looked So Happy 😢.. Such Beautiful People Who Will Live On In Our Hearts! 😍
Diana Rodriguez
Its called acting lady...with all the racism back then, I highly doubt they were actually that happy in real life. I could only imagine the shit they went thru smh
@@kaylao.3326 Fr it’s sad
@@kaylao.3326 oh shut it
Thank you for sharing these lovely videos. She all stole our hearts when we watched her viewing the good ol' days.
Black people ALWAYS had rhythm.
Yup, I sometimes sit and watch TCM, and i wonder where the hell all of the black short films, music videos and movies are? It's always the hundreds of white stuff being played. Damn our people were so talented back then. I'd rather watch them.
ZsaZsa InTheShire Get the fuck out of here. She was speaking about blacks and only blacks. Go take your offensiveness somewhere else.
RACIST
RACIST
BIG FUCKING RAAAAAAAAAAACIST
In 1943, the dances are just tap dance
*In 2019, the dances are twerking*
I would seriously pick the 40’s then today
I believe twerking has been around for ages in "black" culture
Wonderful Classic Filming
what a beautiful lady she was 😍😍 may she rest in peace now!!!
tiffany thompson why did you say was she still beautiful you bitch
Crypted Killer calm the fuck down it was a compliment tf
Alice has such a cute smile
These were amazing it’s sad there is no music like this anymore or even musical performances like this I find it incredible Alice Barker lived to such an old age and truly enjoyed what she did which was dancing and performing
A wonderful tribute, A Wonderful women (got to meet her when I was 16), Rest in sweet peace Alice!
I love this era the dancing, singing and costumes. Miss Alice Barker could sho shake that thang. May perpetual light shine upon her soul and may she rest in peace❤
What a wonderful time! It makes me so so content that everyone was having a joyous performance, especially the beautiful Alice Barker.
Love this costumes from 1943 ! Love Alice’s smile !❣️❤️💞💘
Great dancers. 1920's-1940s theatrics were on another level.
Alice seemed like a very sweet lady. She was very lovely as a young woman and was lovely when she was older. May she rest in peace! 💛
Great stuff! Thank you for posting!
I have comfort knowing that happy young woman in the video lived a full long life ♥️ RIP
Omg , *applause* please this is ART, i love how this girl have his Documental!!! BEUTIFUL... PRECIOUS.... Yolo!!!
to everyone saying you wish you were born at the time of this video: please stop
that being said, this is so lovely, love seeing how happy and energetic they all are. rest in peace.
1940 : this.
2017 : dabbing, twerking.
Fgchnk Vfinki today’s “dancers” go out of their way to be shocking to detract from the fact they’ve no talent!!
Fgchnk Vfinki i dont see how THIS is talent. THIS anyone could do. Back then the choreography were sloppy and simple and now, they are in sync with each other when they dance
Yes this is better than twerking and dabbing
My name is kdvmnv ,dskskxk$?((÷$?(☺😍😏😶😎😚🏞🏥🏗🏘🏝🏜🏗🕧🕛🕛## ## ## ## ### ## ## ## do you like my name?
And flossing orange justice and also the hype
People were so classy and elegant back then. They also seemed to worry less and looked so much happier and content with their lives. While in the present day I feel like almost everyone is depressed or doesn’t like this or that. Such a loss..
I’m total agree with you!!! I miss the Old Vintage Class... These time we live in now suckssss
There is so much joy in this video!
I love America
We have the finest ladies in the world!! Props to you Alice for staying around for 103 years and sharing this together with us. Rest In Peace.
This is kind Nostalgic to me for some reason
I always feel i was part of this century, music and dance feel so connected to it.
IM NOT CRYING. I JUST HAVE SOMETHING IN MY EYES...
She was adorable! In 2014 and back when she danced! I would love to see this type of music and dance come back! How blessed she was to get paid for something she loved so much! I know she is dancing in Heaven and loving every second of if! God Bless her! She was a special and lovely lady! I would like to know more about her life!
I like the old dances better than these new ones
I love that when they dance, they don't care if they're on time or doing the moves the exact same. They just smile and have fun with it, and that's what dance should be❤
God bless Ms. Barker with an eternity of happiness.
I could watch and listen to this music all day.
Alice is great :D
They seem to have so much fun, so fun to watch.
That beautiful smile of hers was unmistakable
Juanita Moore from Imitation of life is one of the dancing girls in the jungle dance 3:06 girl on the right, she looks taller then the other girls. she was 99 years old when she passed away
Idk when she passed away, but the last time she saw it was when she was 102 y/o
CookieWilliams was talking about Juanita Moore (October 1914 -January 2014)
Thank you for the upload. Really enjoyed the dancing and music. Very talented performers too. Ms. Barker especially.

They are so talented
Their voices and moves
