Here's a question... What happens when parts of your rear steering system start to fail, but you never actually "subscribed" to the option.... Who's paying for the repair?
If people aren’t happy with car feature subscriptions they’ll vote with their wallets. Subscriptions will either stay or go depending on whether manufacturers are making money from it.
Just as an example of your 'reach', I was filtering through traffic on my motorbike here in Ireland last year, and came across a Honda Civic with your 'chopped' sticker on the back. Like an eejit without thinking, I stopped by his window and tapped on it, he looks up in shock at this bloke in a black helmet and leathers looking down at him, before I excitedly pointed at the sticker and shouted 'MIGHTY CAR MODS!', to which his face completely lit up and shouted back 'yeaahhhhh!!!' waving both thumbs up at me!!! I rode off in to the sunset, but with a knowing smile that two eejits over in Australia, and just made the day of two eejits in Ireland!!! 🤣😉
I am not from france but I travel through france a lot. Yes it is true. You also need a bulb kit so you are able to replace any faulty bulbs, a florissant jacket or vest so you are visible when you break down on the side of the road, and a reflective triangle to put on the road to warn traffic if you are broken down
You actually need to have 2 breathalysers with you in the car in france, so that if you have to use one you always have at least 1 left! Also, you need to carry high vis vests for every occupant.

I want a GR Corolla to drive around every day and not put a cover on it and try to sell it for a profit. Toyota can check my history, my first three cars were Toyotas with the second one being a Sportivo with the mad 2ZZ-GE 8000rpm engine with VVT-iL (Toyota's version of VTEC). But they're like $70,000 and I probably can't realistically afford one 😢
Subscriptions for hardware that are already on the car is awful. I will not participate in that economy (much like microtransactions). If there was overhead from the company, like they have new technology that they are upgrading and that's what the car hooks into to use it (imagine old school GPS DVD, but cloud based), I could see that as a subscription. What value is Mercedes providing with the heated-seat subscription?
They have done the sub thing for years in 1 way or another. It started with locking out trailer electrics, they would leave connector but not install towbar or plug. If you installed towbar and plug the ECU locks the use out of the electrics. People used to use bypass to get around it and still do just search trailer relays. The alternative to a relay/box was to pay the manufacturer to unlock the connector so it worked. I think a fair few cars had next to no differences in engine also but performance was literally just ECU locked. Its not a few thing anyway, its just they call is a subscription now and its not effecting things people never use now.
Car manufacturers have been putting in the equipment in cars for a long time that's not activated unless you buy the higher model that has that feature as std. It's mainly electrical stuff, as it's cheaper for them to just have the one wiring loom. My 2001 TS Astra didn't have cruise control. But buy the cruise control stalk. Then all you have to do is activated it on the ECU, then boooom cruise control. Holden done the same on Commodores with the front driving lights that were only on the SS. The entire loom was there including the plugs that plug into the driving lights. Now manufactures are just working out that they can charge per item to make more $$
What about if you don’t pay then that feature fails like the rear steering will the factory pay for the replacement of the the rear rack if it’s seals have perished? I doubt it !!!
Years ago (might still be doing it) Porsche had a subscription service, where you paid a 100k deposit then like 500 a month to get any Porsche and use it for as long as you paid your monthly fee, and could switch anytime you want

Read up on the digital millennium copyright act. This is where that is heading. If there are no smarts in the electrically adjusted seat, plug in a $100 tool battery and crank it. Better still, pull that seat out and replace it with one that runs on a Bluetooth remote control then put the old one back in when it time to sell. The manufacturers are banking on laziness. Time to show them who is lazy with some DIY arduino and a phone app
No, breath analyzers are not a thing at all in France. Most people don't have one and the police aren't checking that at all. I never saw anyone with one, and I don't have one either in my Crown Majesta 😅 However the sometimes check if we got an high vis vest per passenger, it is also mandatory.
The France breathalyser thing is real, and there's a similar French reg that states you have to have enough hi-vi's vests for the seats, not occupants, of your car. They're generally known as tourist laws so that French gendarmes can stop tourists and have a 'reason' to stop them ("Show me your vest..."). I've heard they very rarely get used/applied in the real world
Thank you guys for touching on the whole “car DLC” debate that’s no longer solely a car owners thing anymore. Gamers genuinely despised “pay to play” kind of features in gaming that when a few got wind of this, they collectively said “no thank you”, although it was worded very strongly. Car DLC is just terrible. You buy the car, you should have 100% of the features you bought for your specific trim level.
I can confirm, the breathalyzer French law is real - although they have slightly gone back on it (they don't really enforce it), as they all breathalyzers kept selling out and no one could get one. You also need a reflective jacket, traffic triangle, and lights and things for if you break down.
So that book the viewer sent you from New Jersey - I swear I learned more from the "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader" series (I got one annually at Christmas for probably 20 years) than I learned in high school! Hilarious and great for the back of the can.
The thing with subscriptions is the people paying for the subscriptions are also paying for those components in the cars of people not paying the subscriptions. It is to streamline production and enable consumers to get the base model at a lower price. As for the consumers, it only pays off if you don't plan on subscribing, as you get the base model cheaper, but when it comes to resale perspective buyers can still access the subscriptions, effectively making your base model still a top spec'd one.
I wonder how warranties work with subscriptions. If I buy an 8 year old Mercedes and then I want to subscribe to an extra feature, is it guaranteed to work, or would they expect me to pay to fix it as well as the use it? What if there was no way to test it before I bought it? If a subscription includes warranty for the life of the sub, that would make better sense 👍🏼
Gaming has been doing this for years via DLC and has developed into a base product being released that would have previously available as part of the base one-off priced product. Recurring consumer spending is the only way share prices can (apparently) go up forever so battlepasses and paid for content later are not only free to play games but full price ones now. Examples being "roadmaps of content release after launch" that none ever stick to, or uproar in the community such as extra content shipped on the disc but held behind a paywall before you can access it. Its the way of modern business as im sure you know.

In France, when the law was published on breath analyser, everybody bought them, and you couldn't find them for months. So they didn't apply the law, and now I don't know if it is enforced or not.
4:02 - In England, the Vauxhall's (Holden, GM ect) all come with the same wiring loom and extras, just they don't add the switches, for example, my 2001 Vectra B 2.2i on a Y reg it has everything that you could spec at the dealer, but you only get what you buy the switches for, Example the heated seats are already wired up and work, but you cannot use them unless you paid the dealer an extra £2000, or do what I did and just buy the switches for £50, boom heated seats, fog lamps not standard, buy fog lamps pop out the plastic space holder, behind it is the connection just dangling down waiting you to plug it in, simply plug in the fog lights, buy the switch, done, again for the head light washers, washer level sensor, the list goes on, all not working because of 1 switch. Its all about the money and now in 2023 its about control, you didn't come back in lock-down in time you are 10 seconds out of curfew, so your car will say NO. Its scary to be honest. Also to note money will be like this if we let the govérnment roll out Crypto and take our cash, you will go to the shops, 1 second out of curfew computers says NO again, you cannot buy bread water etc, car wont start, smart door bell and smart locks know you left the house, fines in the post, or took them from your crypto already no appeal... madness. Keep up the good work lad's, full respect from England.
In France by Law you must carry an in date breathalyser, a bulb kit, a warning triangle, and a Hi Viz per passenger (might be something else I've missed)
Yes, true. I don't have any in any of my car and have never have been checked by anyone and have never heard of anyone having been fined for that. The magical aspect of France: we have laws for anything but they're not enforced. And as we say, laws are made to be broken....
It has been ten years for me without a drivers license and I can't help but feel like I am not missing much given how cars are going lately. At this rate I'll never get one either.
The Jungle sight is Amazon… and thank you for absolutely demolishing that gift bag… and the persons name who ever that was who sent the candle from the jungle sight.
As for the car subscription model - look at how PC Games are these days; games passes, DLCs etc. The gaming industry makes a killing with this model, and the car industry looked at that and said: Hold my beer! 🥴
That is sort of true. Yes, they are making money, but they have lost a lot, too. The ones buying the DLC content are not the ones you think it is. The demographic that it hits is the kids with mommy and daddy's wallet. They are the ones who buy this. This demographic is changing as these kids get older and have to pay for it theu stop buying it. And when they have kids, they don't spend the money on it. But also, when you buy a video game, the base game is unlocked. That means all features on the game are yours to use. They add content, and you buy it. I personally will not pay for a heated seat function. Lol, i will either hack it, rewire it to a switch, or add an aftermarket kit. Lol.
Yes, the breathalizer is mandatory to have in your vehicule. As well as a high-vis jacket, an orange reflective triangle. No first aid kit or extinguisher, mind you... so yeah. Also, the guy who convinced the govt to pass that bill may or may not be an employee of the business that produces the breathalizers. So... yeah, there's that.
The France thing. We go to Le Mans every year. The truth is that the French put the legislation in but it's supposedly not legally enforcable. Yes, you need a breathalyser (and it has to be in date) so if the police stop you and think you might be drunk, they can get you to take a test and find out at the side of the road without the police having to carry the kit. What you didn't tell is the hilarity that you need two kits because at first, the policer were stopping people and getting them to use it, then the car was at the side of the road without a breathalyser (as they'd just used it) so could then issue the stupid fine.
Breathalysers in France was trialed and then dropped. The original plan was that you would need two as you always must have one available. Therefore if you carried one and tested yourself, you then wouldn't have one! After the test period it was never put into law.
@@Alex-tu9bh will be firmware wont it? Course there will be a way, if there is a human smart enough to write the program, there is another human smart enough to circumvent it. Issue is though when the manufacturer get notified of this what would the ramifications be? Tesla currently disable aspects of their cars if they get notified of anything they dont like. Basically the future of car "ownership" is that at all, you are renting it from them.
Last place I expected a hardstyle reference lmao. Can't say it's "new" though, just getting a refresher along with the popularity of weightlifting culture (and now a certain over-popular chinese dopamine generator app, unfortunately).
Car DLC, so can i charge Mercedes for carrying and maintaining their gear? do i get reimbursed for fuel consumption when i didn't want the extra weight?
I'd never buy a car that required a subscription for features. Erosion of ownership is everywhere In our lives and it's not good for the customer. I've got a 2007 Mazda 3, my next car will be an mx5 when the 3 dies. While 'my crap car' lives I'll drive it. It's just wasteful to change for no good reason. I'd love to see the pirate bay have the software unlocks for these heated seats and steering bollocks.
Ignore all rules in France. You don't need a yellow jacket, warning triangle, breathalyzer, or ANYTHING. I've done 10k miles in France and never bothered with any of it. I've been pulled over eg for speeding, didn't have any of that crap with me (never do), and they don't give a monkey's. They just fine you for speeding and let you go.
The whole 'new Amarok not out yet, old Amarok not included' thing would have been fairly heavily, if not completely, VW Marketing Dept. Because they know their old tech Amarok won't stack up well against the new utes, so they don't provide a press car for the guys to do the review with
The Subscriptions thingy is strange, however some of the people who buy outright stuff like brand new GTRs on release day always trade them when they realize the warranty goes void after a certain number of hard launches, so I think this is manufactures extending coverage, getting greedy then extending this to everything else. If it's safety stuff, these manufactures should be fines heavy heavy amounts. Yeah that about the GR going into museums is real, I would love to have a second corolla that has 300hp, give it the same colour as my daily so no one can tell. and yeah publishers in a dying industry will do strange things, Hurst Media inventing yellow journalism and all that words are powerful.
Car subscriptions (and gambling) are nature’s way of punishing people for being bad at math. It would be different if the feature was installed and you can pay to unlock it. That is fine. But paying for heated seats on an annual subscription is BS.
No, that isn't fine. If it's cheaper for manufacturers to make the feature standard, then it should be standard. Now, they can do what they want so long as it is legal, but it's scummy as hell.

I don't mind paying to software unlock the feature once and when it is a lifetime unlock. Anything else is predatory.
Not just breathalyser but also hi-viz jacket for every passenger, first aid kit and warning triangle. I believe
Yeah, these items all come in the rental cars in France
I wonder how warranties work with subscriptions. If I buy an 8 year old Mercedes and then I want to subscribe to an extra feature, is it guaranteed to work, or would they expect me to pay to fix it as well as the use it? What if there was no way to test it before I bought it? If a subscription includes warranty for the life of the sub, that would make better sense 👍🏼
That's interesting because only in the last couple years Arnott's shapes changed their recipe only to change back and increase in sales I believe
Just pre-ordered my poster, and chop finger decal, you guys are awesome keep it up
Would it be possible to get Unicorn Circuit t-shirts in a different colour to white please? I spend too much time covered in oil to get away with white. Thanks
Regarding turbo and Midget: no worries here (it was an awesome adventure) - future revisit (for more awesome Midget adventures). Onto the other nuggets!
Having nuggets piling up suggests a visit from the plumber is in order
38 of us absolutely loved it.
My dears from the other hemisphere... May I respectfully request that you supercharge the Midget. Blown 2wd Vs turbo AWD kei truck shootout? As you chaps would say, "yeah nah yeah" 👍
You should sell white poster at standard price then charge additional costs for each additional colour..... Just to live with your time!
In France, when the law was published on breath analyser, everybody bought them, and you couldn't find them for months. So they didn't apply the law, and now I don't know if it is enforced or not.
It's not
No doubt the subscription cars will be unhackable😂😂😂😂
Great vid, but after searching Frenchcore my next week is busy, so I'll miss the daily unicorn circuit about 4wd's!
Lol.
Poster ordered…and a few other things since I was there…and now we wait
Fav show on the interballs!!!
When’s that 1 of 1 special edition going on sale?
It should go on eBay. I bet it could fetch $2000 at least
The unlocks aren't tied to the vehicle, They're tied to the owner. So when you resell the Merc the next owner will have to unlock everything again.
Marty Loves Frenchcore! 🕺🏻🎉 Im hosting a rave thats playing Hard Techno & Gabber on March 4th if your keen 👀
15:40 - LOL, "Radom Eat Bag". I guess with inflation "n"' got too damned expensive!
Hefty flaps hahah. Man I wait for the fanks. Wish u guys had more. Well, there's always next time.
Roald dahl books arent old stock. the publisher ias both versions, one sold under the 'puffin' brand, the other as 'penguin' brand
My soggy gooch.... "I may b dead" JESUS MARY CHRISTMAS MARTY
Cart wait for mine to arrive!!! Just ordered 😁
i agree with moog, just dont mess with stuff,
Mighty Car Mods 2043, plugging your USB finger into a 20 year old Benz to unlock parking sensors and 10 extra PS.
However you must have a spare bulb kit, a hi viz vest and a warning triangle.
BMW in the Uk are now charging "subscriptions" for certain things such as heated seat and steering wheel
Surely there's ways around it, it's just wires after all
@@Alex-tu9bh will be firmware wont it?
Course there will be a way, if there is a human smart enough to write the program, there is another human smart enough to circumvent it.
Issue is though when the manufacturer get notified of this what would the ramifications be?
Tesla currently disable aspects of their cars if they get notified of anything they dont like.
Basically the future of car "ownership" is that at all, you are renting it from them.
The statue David by Michelangelo had a fig leaf added for many years. 🤦♂
Last place I expected a hardstyle reference lmao. Can't say it's "new" though, just getting a refresher along with the popularity of weightlifting culture (and now a certain over-popular chinese dopamine generator app, unfortunately).
I'm fine with never buying a new car again... used nuggets FTW!
3rd Wichita car for the LSC crew. Did you coordinate this video release with Alex showing his trip in the 12C with JR? 😅
Yup the breath analyzer thingy is real
Ignore all rules in France. You don't need a yellow jacket, warning triangle, breathalyzer, or ANYTHING. I've done 10k miles in France and never bothered with any of it. I've been pulled over eg for speeding, didn't have any of that crap with me (never do), and they don't give a monkey's. They just fine you for speeding and let you go.
My answer to monthly payments on a car beyond the base price? Jailbreak.
I used to keep a caged raccoon in the backseat when my car had a breathalyzer installed. Lil dude passed everytime.
As one of the 38 viewers of this series I'm glad you guys dropped a new episode.
The whole 'new Amarok not out yet, old Amarok not included' thing would have been fairly heavily, if not completely, VW Marketing Dept. Because they know their old tech Amarok won't stack up well against the new utes, so they don't provide a press car for the guys to do the review with
“I own the soup”, LET ME EAT IT!!!! 😂😂😂😂
I cant get drift mode on my a45s, I wonder if i have to sub for it!!!
Cars with subscription and fixed prices will never end up in my driveway.
I will say I LOVE my gr Corolla but I’m also in the US so it’s not AS limited as for you down under
Love your username. I'm in Canada and have my GR ordered. Im pretty stoked about it for sure.
$500! You’ve just given me the idea to sell my signed poster so i can help my 17yo buy their first nugget (car)
