- Worst Lawn Mower In The World Challenge Old Start Cold Start. In this video I start a challenge to find out who can find the worlds worst lawn mower and basically get it running. We found an old Hayter lawnmower hidden in the brambles and blackberry bushes in our garden that had been lost for about 5 years out in the open so we dug it out and check the video out to see how we got on.
#worstlawnmowerintheworld #willitrun
I got the idea from watching a video from my lawnmower mate Mowerman's channel at • Worlds Worst Petrol La... so check him out.
If you want to take part, just put # Worst Lawn Mower In The World Challenge in your video title and let's see what we can find.

I'm in great idea, I've got an old hayter 48 that has been in bushes for a good few years, I'll try to start the video this weekend. 🙂👍
Great, let's see what you got.
We have a very large Briggs and Stratton factory that was built in 1989 in my home town in South East Missouri USA. They mainly build vertical shaft lawn mower engines. I've been using Briggs engines since 1960 or so when I started mowing lawns to earn a little money. I'm 68 and they're all I buy now, very reliable and when there is a problem parts are easy to find...Very much enjoyed your video...
Thanks Howard, they seem to be tough little engines, Much better than the newer ones.
It just goes to show that with a carb service, new spark plug and fresh petrol even a scruffy mower will start and run. Those Briggs and Stratton engines are virtually bullet proof. Very good video Martin. You should seriously consider restoring some of the mowers that you pulled out of the hedge. That way you will earn some money from them and it would make a good series of videos.
Yes Nick, I think I'll do that in a later vid.
Cheers
Martin
LOL, My Father was throwing out a Hayter Harrier because he could not get it started, he had already purchased a replacement so I had the Hayter off him, it still going strong now three years later! The issue with them is that the 'carb' if you can call it that does not use a float bowl, the fuel tank is basically the float bowl, this means that the mixture starts to lean off as the fuel level drops which makes it tricky to start if the tank is only 1/4 full. On second thoughts it might have some sort of float bowl and the diaphragm acts as a pump but it has a hard time moving the fuel when the level is low.
Wow I didn’t know you could grow lawnmowers!!!
Nice job guys! Briggs & Stratton - unbeatable!
I agree John.
Great job on getting that mower running again
Thanks, They are great mowers and worth saving.
Can't wait I'm going to find one
wow started up and sounds great Martin ,i'd get all those out the brambles and get working on them, great vid ,cheers Steve
blackberries first Steve lol
I enjoyed your video and have used thses same techniques on some mowers I've repaired.
Brilliant! Great challenge!
Get in there Ian lol
Idk why but I love it lol
Good job , I did one like this one time . To old nobody would buy it tho - they want something late model . But good practice ...
Lol Martin good stuff . Don't think i have anything that bad will have a look mind.
Cheers Pete.
Go on Pete, have a go lol
Well i have a turd here Martin but not the worst bit of kit.
See what i can find lol.
If it runs...
It sells!
Jungle clearance to boot! Digging the new music!
I might restore it so it could be up for sale.
I watch a lot of engine rebuilds , I always wondered what you would have to do / to just get it running ! Nice job ! I and you got that piece of crap running it is amazing
looks fun have to try and find one now
Nice one bud.
I got a new challenge for you! Try to free up as many seized lawn mowers as you can and give them a new breath of life again.
Use thin oil the first time and flush the oil a few times to get any metal debris out
then use thick oil for it and see how many you can revive to mow the lawn with (if they have a rod knock you can use some fine sand paper on a flat surface to tighten the piston rod connecter bearing up.) by rubbing it gently on both halves of the connecting bearing where they join together at.
If I find a seized mower, i'll give it a go.
Thats awesome!!
It's fun to try to crack them loose.
You need to use gobs of the thinnest oil right in the cylinder/s so they have minimal scoring and maybe let it seep in a while as well.
Hair clipper oil/trimmer would probably work great as its the lightest oil i can find anywhere.
Or you could just use some WD-40 if you wanted. that would probably work fine as well. as you need some form of lubrication right as its freeing up.
this challenge is awesome.
I've only just seen this video about the challenge and I'm up for that but I've just scrapped all mine I'll start looking for one straight away looks like we can use new parts as well to get it going. This challenge is a good idea well done Martin cheers Colin
HI Colin, Yes I ended up restoring the first one I dragged out. Check out the videos on that restoration.Good luck with your and look forward to seeing the one you find.
Great video........
love 16.06 when it starts absolutely brilliant
Always a great moment, I never get tired of one bursting back into life.
Wow, you got it going! Nice work. Those Briggs and Stratton engines are bulletproof!
Yes, and working on the other ones as well. I bet you have an old mower laying about. Give it a go.
Ahh, Darn it Martin .. ! I just had them all hauled off man.. Loved the vid .. Thumbs up !
Haha, next time Shawn.
i love your videos and my dad and i used to do them and were thinking to do them again soon
Great vid Martin 👍
Cheers
Jamie
Cheers Jamie.
Mart, you hide lawnmowers like a squirrel hides his nuts!lol
Haha, Forgot they were there though Steve lol
Well done Mate!! Those Briggs are tough lil' Bastids eh!!☺
I'm sure you'll have one floating about.
I'll see what I can do! Thanks for the challenge.
I'm sure you're up to it George.
I have a business in garden machinery and I get swarmed with peoples worst lawnmowers weekly lol
Cool idea martin great vid
Cheers John
Knew you would get it going good vid as always
Lowing these videos. Subscribed
Greetings Martin! A friendly American here, that mower has a Briggs and Stratton engine. Just to let you know......
Those are some good looking blackberries
i recently found a free lawnmower in the trash it was a 190cc Briggs Flathead push mower engine it had a full tank of gas and i got it running the lawnmower was junk but the engine is in good shape
Forget the lawn mower's martin what about a petrol strimmer lol keep up the good work Great videos
Very good 👍
Cheers John.
I got a mower in the bush of an old house i know the house has been abandoned for about 30 years so that gives you an idea. It's mostly a pile of rust
Great video! Question regarding the top of flywheel. How does the recoil starter engage with the square top flywheel? All others I've seen have a cup style top.
Not sure what one you mean bud
Well done guys
Oh here we go. Lol nice video!
great video m8 well done
Thanks Dave
Great video Martin
Thanks Gordon.
Cool it started
Thanks bud.
In my life of fixing mowers, I've never had a hayter mower.
Its a British brand.
I've got a lawn mower with a Briggs engine that was made in the 1950's. It's got breaker points for the ignition. And what I like the most about it is it has a updraft carb on it. I got it to fire and run for a couple seconds. I hope to one day get it going and use it. I like old things.
Probably a carb service would sort it out bud
Yep I'm in, I'm digging one of my dinosaurs out tomorrow lol 👍
Nice one, good luck with it
retrorestore Martin check my vid out lol.
Iv got a old briggs with the pull start on the side bin stood 15 years did work ok then someone mess with it to the point it rev its nutts of so just left it got a new one but soon has i feel better after my op im going try sort it now iv seen your shows
Some of those old mowers make all mine look like new. gee about the 4.20 mark it sure sounded like someone let go a really LOUD fart haha.
It was probably Sharon haha
Yes maybe, or you can always blame it on the poor dog like most people do. like when someone farts in the car.
Beautiful dogs mate, hope your missus picks those blackberries.
Yes, we had a rhubarb and blackberry crumble. Superb.
wow... awesome guys! #theworldsoldestawnmowerchallenge
Hi Martin. Do you ever work on Suffolk Punch cylinder lawnmower 's. I have one sitting here for years lol, would like to know how to service that style and where to look to get part's etc etc, thanks Marty.
I have worked on a couple but we don't repair those as we only stock spares for the Briggs and Stratton mowers. They don't tend to sell very well either.
Great video and contest. So easy to repair, people can't be bothered and buy new all the time. Who will be the winner?
Didn't expect it to start after that length of time outside though Bri. Super little engines though.
Hi martin. Great vid. Just shows what you can do. Which I can't! I have a rescued b& g engine which starts but won't rev up. Any ideas? Cheers peter
What's a B and G one Pete?
ha ha most of mine start off like that martin, i'll have to keep my eye out for a crappier than usual one.... i've got no nasty ones in stock at the moment!! that hayter i did a couple of month ago would have qualified!!
nice one Jon, I did think of you when I put this one out there lol
Awesome-I was betting against you fixing that when you yanked it out the growth mate-but I should have known better!
I didn't think it would run as well Tom lol
Sorta wish you had done the 2 stroke one, still a cool challenge!
I may dig that one out sometime.
Not too sure how i got here, but i subbed about 2 minutes into the video, the accent got me haha.
bmann1132 nice one buddy UK accent
I got pretty confused, i couldn't tell, but you do sound a little australian :P
Very nice video mate! I actually rather enjoyed the Indiana Jones-ish lawn mower expedition you had there. Reminds me vaguely of my grandmother's old lawn space. Was quite like that actually.
Haha, nice one bud. Thanks for watching.
Cheers
Martin
No problem at all! Thanks for the neat video here! haha. it's like a barn-find but with mowers. lol
keep it up! :)
Yea I'll give it a go - from NSW Australia.
I wish me and my neighbor filmed the S bent valve one we brought back to life. It took 1 1/2 hours to get that valve out :P
Hayters gonna hayt
Haha, I have a couple of those as well lol
Oh dear
Any old engine will start providing its had a good tune up.
My son has one that is missing a wheel (broken off) and other parts missing that might be the world's worst lawnmower. I'll see if he is interested in getting it running.
Sounds ideal lol
Can u get the qualcast and 2 stroke flymo and other 2 hayters running as well
Yes, I'm going to do this in later vids so keep tuned.
retrorestore
Yes, you HAVE to pull out the Flymo!!
retrorestore ive seen u do 1 hayter and try the flymo great ones the flymo runs just another hayter and a qualcast
Yes, i'll be attempting those as well before I restore them.
Cheers
Martin
retrorestore cool
Where there's muck there's brass as they say lol I'm after seeing if I can somehow make a outboard engine from a B&S for a kayak to power it along or even use a petrol strimmer Are these able to be converted Martin or am I barking up the wrong tree and need a different motor. Cheers mate keep up the good work
I think similar has been done. Do a RUclips search Antony.
Hey! I like your video a lot. I'm in South Africa and I got a old Sprint 375 Briggs and Stratton that I love with all my heart. I bet if you see it you'd want to reconsider your statement of that being the world's worst lawnmower 😃 it will be turning 22 years old on the 25th August according to the imprinted dates. that little beast keeps on surprising me. I got it when my dad wanted to throw it away when he bought a new one and eversince I nurtured it and it's going good. Nobody uses the machine anymore, as it makes a LOT of smoke when started,so I'm the only one brave enough to operate it. That being said,I only go home every 6 months and the last time I went home I started it up after a year. All it took was two pulls and it was purring away!!
in the meanwhile my dad had to get another new lawnmower since the first one just died. My beast outlived them all!!!
Briggs and Stratton just don't die!
I have one two sadly the exhaust valve sticks open so it has no compression but im rebuilding it soon
Nice one bud. Briggs are great engines. Glad yours is still going strong.
There isn’t an old Cortina lurking about back there by chance.
Martin & Gary i think you pair are the Berk & hare of the lawn mower world. Get Sharon to take you both to the G P theres lots of help nowadays
Weren't they murderers ? Haha
game on!!!
Haha Competition lol
retrorestore Yeah lol these little engines are amazing I was in B and Q today and not one mower had a decent engine on ! Scary really people being robbed in my opinion that hayter would last longer.
Good job Martin, being as its got a grass bag, can you weld a patch in the deck and get it ready for sale? Glad to see that you boys have accepted my challenge...come on Paul, stop being a jessie and get that £5 junker going. If you're worried about running it because of the holes in the deck, just take the blade off and it'll be fine
They are a popular motor and very reliable.
Andy K: Are you sure it will run without the blade acting as a flywheel? Give it a try dude! Just don't break your wrist when pulling the starter rope!!
Engines like that, Based on the Briggs XC35 are literally unstoppable...
Yes I agree, great engines.
Ohh man. Take a look at them there berries. WaaHoo i would shurly make me some berry pies
that lawnmower is in better condition than ours, she knocks like hell
Haha, nice one lol
My old one shot sparks out of it every once a while
Also it knocked everyonce and a while
want to pick those berry, they look good.
I have an 1960s sears crafsman and I have not had it running in 7 years
Get it going then bud and film it.
nice bike in there
I'll do that one day.
Hi, I have a briggs and stratton motored mower which I have had for 20 years or so now. It starts great from cold but when hot it gives a lot of trouble to start.
I have changed the oil every year since new, I recently changed the plug, air filter etc. Any ideas at all please that could help? Much appreciated 👍
I would service the carb and put a new diaphragm and if that didn't help, i'd chech the valves
@@retrorestore I'll give that a go. Thankyou 👍
I have worked on small engines for 16 years I sale lots of parts and now I sale parts for Tractors Like Kubota, Case, Ford, John Deere, Classic, Massey Ferguson, and more,
Sounds like you are doing well bud.
Good luck.
Cheers
Martin
Did you take up the slack before giving the cord a good pull?
It took me a few weeks to figure that one out.
No slack here lol
I moved into a house from the 60s and it came with a 1963 mtd 2hp briggs and stratton. Hasent been runed since 2003 or so try to run it for you
Wish y'all would of done like a full restore. That would of been a cool video
That may be coming very soon bud. Keep watching.
Cheers
Martin
Good one Martin. I reckon if you broke all those others for parts you could make a couple of hundred pounds. Atb . Rob.
Could be or I could try and get them restored. Not decided yet.
It's the Mike Brewer in the mower world😂
Haha, Check out my channel, I do cars as well lol
Wow, them berries look really juicy! Lol
do a restoration of that bike? it looks pretty cool.
I plan to put a lawnmower engine in that
Worlds worst lawnmower. An electric one. Good old Hayter
Haha, That Hayter has really been neglected but I reckon I might restore it now lol
Here's a challenge: you need to restore them! 😂
I will be in later vids
You should clear that wasteland and see what's there that would make a great video
I did clear it years ago as I was going to add an extension onto my cabins. Another project lol
At least you can salvage the donkey from it. ;)
Getting into restoring tractors to? 15:10 haha
Haha, well spotted lol
Found a 1972 Snapper overgrown, pulled cord. Started.
tacumseh engine
Wow, Should have filmed it bud.
That's a surprise, The carbs normally block up on those after a long period of non use.
I thought my yard was bad with over growth. Had to laugh now clean up the mower and mow with it. See how it runs and holds up.
Oh em gee!!
That's onehelluva lawn-mower!!
El oh el!!
Them t shirts last a year theyre brill. Every other brand shrinks in wash. Ya should do a video on them ha
I have those vids on another channel.
Briggs And Stratton!
R.I.P "hayter's" 😂😂
I'll get them all running soon lol
I found 3 mower on the side of the road a mountfield sp414 from 2013 a qualcast trojan 16 from 2000 a husqvanna sovering from 2007 and i got all 3 running
Nice one bud. Most people give up after a few furious pulls when they don't start.
retrorestore yer i know can u get all the others mowers going the flymo the other 2 hayters and qualcast
What bike was that in the beginning of the video ?
A Sherwin Stingray
