The Smiths - Live on Data Run c. 1984, a British TV Program

  • Johnny Marr and Morrissey visit a class of English elementary schoolers, who interview the band. Morrissey and Marr perform a quick, acoustic rendition of "This Charming Man," with the little school children singing the chorus. Program also contains footage of band rehearsals and Morrissey's explanation of the band's name and other matters.
Note: This video footage was found on the Web randomly a few years ago via a Smiths fan site, I think.

So what do we have in this interview?
    1) a bunch of super-scary puppets,
    2) an incredibly cheesy newspaper act,
    3) not only the wrong first name for Morrissey, but also a misspelled last name which he has probably told them on purpose,
    4) a bunch of kids not knowing who they have in front of their very eyes,
    5) a Johnny Marr barely able to keep from laughing,
    6) and last but not least a whole heap of epic quotes from the ever so brilliant Morrissey.
All interviews should be like this.

The kid that asks " why do you hold flowers when you sing" is johnny marr's brother Ian .

Got to love this, Morrissey and Marr looked so young, and yet both so charismatic. They probably thought "WHICH show? Ok, well what the hell, let's make the best of it".
    Those two made musical history.

Being the age before our wonderful Internet, they probably couldn't figure out his first name, so most likely they asked him, and he probably said, "My name is Morrissey." And they replied, "Yes, but what's your first name?" "My name is Morrissey." "No, we bloody need your first name." And, exasperated, Morrissey probably finally said, "Oh, bug off. Just go with Paul. That's my name, Paul." It would be just like Morrissey to fuck with people on national TV.

Ahhhh 1984...I miss you. I absolutley love this clip. You can tell Mozz only wants to claim He and Marr as The Smiths. Johnny has to mention Joyce and Rourke and Mozz grins afterwards. So cocky and brilliant.

Ahhhh that was The Smiths. But how Mozzington has changed over the years, becoming the very things he said were so bad back then. I still worship The Smiths (and Mozzlers' first album, which I always feel was like a spur road off The Smiths) but his behaviour over the last few years has become... questionable...

The music and lyrics speak for themselves with no need for computerized flashy new 3D inventive groundbreaking CGI animation...

@ChloeLikesWonderpets Paul Morressey was the director of 'Flesh', one of Morrissey's favourite movies, a still of which appears as the cover to their debut album. Knowing Morrissey and his sense of humour he probably told the programme makers that was his name for a laugh.

I picked out the chords. Capo o the 2nd fret, this guitar is tuned higher than standard:
Open E, B minor, F# minor(only play the middle 4 strings), raise your pinky to make an open G barre chord with the pinky on the 5th fret, then slide up 2 frets.

    Whole progression is open E 022100, X2444X, X4422X, 54222X, 76444X
    Hope this makes sense!

I've seen this video before, but it just hit me how if the Smiths had tried to go and visit schoolchildren in America parents would have been horrified and probably have boycotted it. Does anyone know if anything like this happened in the UK, for any of their appearances with small children? (I'm not at all trying to imply anything about the smiths and small children. At all. I'm just thinking about overprotective parents and the nature of some smiths lyrics, and it got me wondering.)
