    Should this barrier also be applied to the apex portions of the attic, the ends of the house (but not covering the vents)?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  8 лет назад +3

      Yes, I'm assuming you are talking about the gable ends of the roof. If they catch sun, then yes you want to install AtticFoil radiant barrier on them. They are basically just part of the roof turned sideways. Same concepts. Leave gaps on tops/bottoms do not cover/block gable vents. www.atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/gable-wall-install/

    My husband and I have actually installed this product in our home in Georgia. It made such a difference in our cooling bill for summer that we have built a home in Alabama and even though it is a new home...the garage is extremely hot due to no insulation on the garage door or in the attic roof. I will be using this radiant barrier to block the heat coming into the garage. The training videos are extremely informative and this is a perfect DIY project that will pay for itself.

    Architect and former contractor with experience dating back to 1978. Have to say, I am impressed with this 3-video series. It is straight forward, provides background that is useful, utilizes real-life applications instead of perfect-world scenarios, and it is well presented. Since I have to keep up on construction techniques, materials and systems I often look through videos like this to keep my knowledge up to date. You should work with AIA or other organizations that proctor Continuing Education courses and develop one on this topic.

    These videos are a god send. I went in my granddad’s attic and thought he got scammed. Turns out I just didn’t understand what I was looking at and he did get scammed. Soffit vents were “installed” but no holes in the eaves. Will be an Easy fix. Thanks, Sir. 👍🏾

    Thanks at the he end for speaking about placing it in a porch. I was wondering about the use of it outside under a porch. I really like your product and will be ordering some soon. What sold us too was you comparing it to Reflectix in another video. Seeing it not rip was key for us in our attic.
    We here in Central Florida have a 2x6 framed ceiling over our dining room and laundry room with a flat roof with zero insulation and ventilation in the ceiling and soffit ventilation in that space. We will place AtticFoil with a 0.5-0.75 inch air gap from the plywood sheathing from the roof spaced with foam 1x2 or 1x4's pieces from foam board I'll cut and glue and then place the AtticFoil on top of the foam. After that I'll attach Kraft Faced R19 Batts of fiberglass insulation under the AtticFoil and then drywall.
    Does that sound like a viable solution for our particular situation? Great products and great videos!

      Yes, sounds like a good plan. Take a look at www.atticfoil.com/applications-a-uses/cathedral-ceilings/foil-to-outside.html I think this is basically what you are trying to achieve.

      You should consider the Over Insulation Method here: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/over-the-insulation-install/ It still works great and is a lot easier to install. Basically, you just lay the foil out on top of the insulation and cover as much as possible. It's OK if you don't get every spot. The more coverage the better. If your home is older, I'd consider the SuperPerf product here: atticfoil.com/index.php/products/45-wide-perforated-double-sided-radiant-barrier-foil-superperf/ You can use a pole with a nail on the end and push it out to the hard to reach areas. You'd be surprised it's not as difficult as you think. Any questions, contact us at www.AtticFoil.com

    I’m working on insulating my two car garage. Should I attach Attic Foil to my trusses or lay it on top of blown in insulation? Also, I will be heating the garage in the winter and cooling in the summer. Thank you

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  6 лет назад

      Since you are cooling it, you may have ductwork in the attic above. If so, then it depends on your climate area. Hot areas, then stapling up will put the ductwork in a less hostile environment. Cold mixed areas, you are probably better off laying on top of insulation. How much cooler will this make the attic? Do you need to install extra soffit vents since all of the bays become so much more enclosed or do you just add more airflow with a stronger attic fan? Intuitively it would seem a ridge vent would increase cooling airflow through the heated channels more than whirly pipe vents, what is your experience with that?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +1

      It depends. You should install the www.AtticFoil.com FIRST. Then, measure the air temperature UNDER the foil. If its MORE than 15º above outside air, then you need to address/add/fix the ventilation. If not, you are done. atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-faq-videos/faq-videos-how-much-cooler-should-my-attic-be-after-installing-a-radiant-barrier/

    How much gap should I leave for the air to flow around? Should I allow gaps on top and on the bottom sides of the roof rafters? Is there such thing as not enough ventilation for the air?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 лет назад +1

      It does not take much in gaps for the air to ventilate. The air will naturally head to the top of the attic due to the stack effect. It's not like an air duct that's under pressure. Think of it as water heading towards a drain. Just give it an open path to get to the top of the attic with no "dead ends".

  • @Mrcaffinebean
    @Mrcaffinebean 5 месяцев назад

    On your site you mentioned this product can be used in place of a soffit vent.
    If I choose to do that do I need to leave a gap at the bottom? Excellent series!

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  5 месяцев назад

      I think we mention you can use/fabricate the www.AtticFoil.com to make insulation baffles, not soffit vents. If yo do run all the way down, I would still cut a slit or leave about a 2" gap above the insulation level. You want air to be able to either go between the AtticFoil and the roof deck or be drawn into the attic.

    • @Mrcaffinebean
      @Mrcaffinebean 5 месяцев назад

      @@AtticFoil yep you are correct I meant baffle not vent. Awesome! Thank you for your suggestion and for making a great product! This is the first thing I am putting up in our 1950s era home we are purchasing. Probably the highest bang for buck thing in an old attic aside from air sealing which is next on the list of course.

    Will it make a difference in cooling even if the attic isn't over the problem area in the home? The hottest room is the living area/den and the attic does not extend over that area. Will it still make a difference in cooling it?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  9 лет назад

      MsPotentialis Normally if you can do anything to reduce the heat load into a home it will help the whole home. If you can reduce the load, you may be able to get better cooling in the problem areas. Or, if you have dampers on your ducts, you may be able to increase air flow to the problem areas. You may want to call us to discuss this.

    Do you recommend to install it on top of my garage even though it doesn’t have any type of roof ventilation? It has some soffits but no any type of roof ventilation. Thanks

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  2 года назад +1

      Yes, install www.AtticFoil.com and you still want to leave some gaps at the top. On homes like this, the soffits can be BOTH intake and exhaust vents depending on the wind pressures. Even without ANY ventilation a radiant barrier will help.

    I don't like that the seams are opened. There should be an adhesive about 3 inches wide to close the overlaps?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  Год назад

      You can seal the seams if you want to. It's not required for www.AtticFoil.com We are not trying to make it "airtight" Just want to break the path of radiant heat from the roof to the insulation.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  2 года назад +4

      Actually not. The water would go down the www.AtticFoil.com and hit a seam within 4 feet. Then drip down. Your leak would be just up from the dripping.

  • @anitschelm

    Hi, if you have good soffit vents why put a gap in the bottom part of the foil near the floor.
    Isn’t it better to have no gap so the heat can go directly to the top portion of the attic?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  2 года назад +1

      You want AIR to also be able to move into the attic for moisture removal. The HEAT will still be blocked.

  • @shabsalis2794
    @shabsalis2794 Год назад

    Hard to understand instructions on blocks, hips, corners etc. Not showing the concerns or how to avoid blockage of air.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  Год назад

      It's not difficult. You never want the air to hit a "dead end" between www.AtticFoil.com and the roof deck. If it does, cut a hole, slit etc. for the hot air to get out and continue rising to the top of the attic.

    • @veloriser4
      @veloriser4 10 месяцев назад

      would you recommend on putting rafter vents with r-19 faced insulation under the roof deck , then install the attic foil right over the insulation by method of stapling under the rafters, with regarding all other application methods being regarded like the 3"-4" air gap right above the top of ceiling insulation?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  10 месяцев назад

      The only time you should put insulation between the rafters on the bottom of the deck is if you are converting to a non-vented or conditioned space. Maybe for a bonus room. Normally, you want www.AtticFoil.com on the rafters for radiant heat and more insulation on the floor for conductive heat.
