    The Department of Energy says the foil should droop to leave a 10" space between the bottom of the deck and the foil for it to be effective. It looks like you're stapeling it directly to the bottom of the roof deck.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  6 лет назад +11

      I think you misread the information. It says 1.0 inches not 10 inches: www.energy.gov/energysaver/weatherize/insulation/radiant-barriers The radiant barrier is typically stapled to the bottom of the roof rafters. This is usually between 3.5 and 7.8 inches depending on the rafter size.

    If there was a small roof leak, how easy would it be to detect it provided you're not actively searching for a leak? Would this block moisture to the point where you won't know you have a problem until it's a huge problem? Great vid, thanks

    • @AtticFoil

      Normally any water leak will leave streaking or staining on the foil. If you run the AtticFoil horizontally it will also get to the seam and start to drip and leave the edge discolored. Then, you can follow the stain to the leak.

    Can't find a clear answer anywhere. My roof is already OSB with a radiant barrier on the bottom (Solarboard type product). Would adding an additional radiant barrier on the bottom of the rafter like this provide additional benefits or do you get marginal returns on additional layers? I'm in San Antonio in a 1.5 story and all three of my air handlers are in the attics, along with all the HVAC ducts.

      Great Question! You may want to read the Dept Of Energy Study here for more info: atticfoil.com/index.php/technical-info/dept-of-energy-study-results/ The answer is yes, it WILL help reduce more heat from entering the home. The first layer will do some (like a filter) but the second layer stapled to the bottom of the rafters will virtually eliminate all radiant heat that gets past the first layer. We have had many home owners and some builders do both with amazing results. You can stand in the attic and not even know if the sun is shining on the roof or not. At this point about the only heat entering the home from the attic is by conduction. That's the difference between the temperature of the ventilated attic and the living space. This heat flow is controlled or by traditional insulation. Does this help? Ed.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you still want air to enter between the foil an the roof deck (it will come from somewhere/inside the attic) and go to the top. If you have holes/ventilation in the attic, hot air will naturally get out and relatively cooler air will come in.

      Great question! Take a look at the "Hybrid Method" here: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/hybrid-install/ Or, an easy solution is to do the Over Insulation method with this trick. Precut the pieces so they are the length from the center of the attic to the eaves. Then, roll them up and take them into the attic in a box. Then, use a pole like a 1x2 or a PVC pipe with a nail taped on the end (or both ends). Then stab the AtticFoil with the nail and push out to the eaves. You can use the nail to stab it and move around. It does not have to be perfect. You just want to get a piece of atticfoil.com/index.php/products/26-wide-for-trusses/ between the hot roof and the insulation. Cover as much as you can but don't worry if there are a few missed spots. You will see an immediate and huge difference on a low pitched roof. Ed.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  6 лет назад

      You are basically "Pushing" air into your attic. You will want to have plenty of "holes" or spaces for the air to be pushed out of the attic. Install the Radiant Barrier Foil in a way that does NOT block these off. You want the air be able to be pushed out of the attic as though the foil is not even there. Gaps at the tops and bottoms and any roof vents, cut holes in the foil below them.

    • @AtticFoil

      Will it work? Yes, but it's the foil side doing the work. The foam board does NOTHING when air can flow freely around it. Think of a refrigerator door. It's only effective if the door is CLOSED. This is like holding a jacket over your head instead of using an umbrella. Waste of money for no additional benefit.

    • @AtticFoil

      Techshield is a product called "Radiant Barrier Decking" it works off the emissivity quality of foil since the attic IS the airspace required. It's not as effective as using a www.AtticFoil.com type product and stapling to the bottom of the rafters. You can use both with amazing results. However, if you are going to AC your garage, you will need to combine AtticFoil with traditional insulation. Call us for more details/help on this. • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  6 лет назад

      It does Not make sense to put insulation between the foil and the roof in a ventilated attic. If your attic is ventilated, then you want foil to the outside (stapled to bottom of rafters). This is your first line of defense against radiant heat. Then traditional insulation on the attic floor. This is your second line of defense against conductive heat.

    At 3:50 mark, you show how to stuff the foil into hard to-reach places, but this seems to conflict with the 5" - 10" gap from the top plate. Would doing so result in restricted air intake through the soffits?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  7 лет назад

      5" - 10" is more than necessary. Usually I say just a few inches. If the foil is loosely pushed back into these areas and not stapled to the truss, there are going to be gaps and cracks between the pieces or Radiant Barrier for some air to enter the attic below the foil. The air is not under pressure like an air duct, so it does not take much space to work.
