This car shows why V6s are awesome

- Everyone seemed to hate the V6 Mustang, but Ginetta has taken that 3.7-litre Ford V6 and worked some serious magic with it in the G55 GT4 racing car. Mike Fernie takes to the Grand Prix circuit at Silverstone to see what's what.
The car Mike is driving is specifically the Ginetta GT Academy car, which is priced at £62,500; that's pretty excellent value for a track day car! And if you have £119,000 you could find yourself in the full GT4 car, ready for a trip to the Nürburgring 24 Hours...

This video shows why light weight cars are awesome.
I have a supercharged V6 and a V8 car. Both the same kind of car. The V8 car makes more power, and is lighter.
I agree lighter is awesome.
Preach it! Low weight is such an under-appreciated charachteristic in an age of cars so heavy they practically have event horizons.
This thing gives me TVR vibes
I think lotus
looks like a cross between a lotus, a tvr and a viper to em
Gary Matthews I’m sorry Gary, but I agree with him too. It looks like an Evora from the front.
Gives me Ginetta vibes.
@@QuakingBacon spot on. Definitely a little viper in there.
"I mean, listen to that" all I hear are straight cut gears making some noise
It has a v6 transmission 🤣
Yeah, my reaction to him saying that was "I am, and I'm not sure why I should be impressed by this sound..."
I mean you CAN hear a lot of intake noise
Drivetribe: why v6 are awesome
Gordon Murray and Adrian Newey: they need 6 extra cylinders...
That's just two V6s though. So, double as awesome
My problem with this video is THERE'S NO EXHAUST NOTE SOUND from the outside of the car. You only hear the car filtered through the cabin and it doesn't sound that great.
*''An engine once hated in one application can find a totally new lease of life in another.''* Same thing with the Honda F1 V8 from '06-'08 when they put it into the HSV-010 GT for the SUPER GT and started dominating the competition.
Wasn't the HSV-010 GT's Engine straight from Formula Nippon instead of F1?
The 3.7Lgot updated to the 3.5L DI Twinturbo V6 640+ HP in The Ford GT. What a life!
Any V sounds great. We have to enjoy them while they’re around.
In the motorcycle world a v4 is a v12 in cars
I tell my sons exactly this, thats why Daddy has a V8 Range Rover (always broken), a V8 X5 and 1971 V8 Landy. They won't be around forever for certain.
@@ristokaratisto6068 and here I have a car which has a V4 engine
@@maxpoweroverdrive are you sure it’s not an inline 4 instead of a V4?
@@Yaro2 V4 exist. they are rare, but they still exist, even if only in older cars
I had a mustang for 10 years with that engine, lasted over 100,000 miles without an issue and I used to BEAT on that thing! Had a pretty great noise with my Borla ATAK’s!
2:43(ish)- you can see the driving coach pushing his right foot down coming out of the corner. It’s just pure muscle memory. That’s awesome.
I do the same thing when I'm riding in someone else's car 😂
1:13 ...just FALSE that Ford stopped using the V6 in the Mustang because “it performed so badly”. The entry level V6 was replaced with a Turbo 4 to comply with American EPA fleet fuel economy regulations. Yes the new Turbo 4 has higher horsepower than the old V6, but that older motor never “performed badly” nor was its replacement predicated on poor performance. In fact, a related V6 motor powers the Ford GT hypercar.
Maybe I'm the one misunderstanding, but I thought he meant "performed" from a sales, public and critic perception standpoint. I don't know the sales figures, but it's easy to imagine people not falling in love with a v6 mustang.
True, the IMSA GT uses the 3.5 ecoboost that was built around the cyclone engine. The GT production car uses the truck based 3.5 ecoboost. The original 3.5 ecoboost that shares the same intake and exhaust ports as its port fuel injected NA 3.5/3.7 but only uses variable cam control on just the intakes and was found in the Taurus SHO, Flex, Explorer Sport, MKT and MKS starting in 2010. The race prepared unit had 2 high pressure fuel pumps to aid the engine in flowing more fuel because the series required ethanol fuel be used. The 3.5 ecoboost was revised and given variable cam control for intake and the exhaust cams and installed in the full size F150 pickup truck for the 2013 model year. This new motor is what is found in the production model GT, albeit more powerful with some hardware changes and software tuning.
I believed he said performed in terms of sale
Jeremiah Gottwald that’s not true either. The V6 outsold the Ecoboost in the year that they overlapped in the Mustang.
I actually don’t think the reason for discontinuation was mpg or sales. The 3.7L was replaced by a couple smaller NA V6s that are only used in the F150. Those new V6s were designed from the start to be truck specific motors and just don’t have the performance characteristics for a Mustang. The 3.7 didn’t exist in any other vehicle after the F150 and Mustang so when the F150 swapped to the new V6s it didn’t make sense to keep manufacturing the 3.7 for just one application when Ford could use the new 2.3 as the Mustang’s base motor instead.
@@yanmustand I think they just thought they'd make more on a new turbo mustang and revive SVO fox body hype
To say that Ford discontinued the V6 because it performed badly is a lie. The V6 was handicapped by Ford in order to drive sales of the Ecoboost 4 banger. The V6 had better fuel economy, horsepower, and was lighter than the Ecoboost. While the V8 Coyote got an update Ford decided not to update the V6.
I think he meant because the sales numbers were so bad, not the engine itself.
I'm thinking there was nothing wrong with the engine, just a marketing decision.
Turbos are popular, its more of a branding gimmick
Maybe it cost of production or emissions or insurance
MUSTANG750R But the V6 had WORSE fuel economy, and had LESS horsepower. I have no idea why you say otherwise, these are easy to check facts.
oh man, I'd love to have a street legal version...
Just buy the G60 or G40 it's essentially the road version of this. But if you really want to wait they have a new car on the way called Akula
@@rockzs74r I just checked out their website. Expensive, but it looks stunning. It actually does look like the old TVRs.
Im pretty sure this is a street version mule, the gta doesnt have headlights or indicators etc but this one does and it has a numberplate bracket at the front
Looks like a front-engined Saleen S7 from the front
This comment gave me nostalgia
Tvr
The 3.7 was a perfect performer at 305hp on 87 octane getting 30 mpg. The ecoboost makes 310 only on 93 octane, and according to 3rd party testing the 3.7 picks up at least 7hp on 93 octane as well giving it 312hp. With a little bit of boost the 3.7 makes power that would have a ecoboost mustang blowing head gaskets. 6 psi on a 3.7 = 600hp
I wish ginnetta made a street going version of this car with a stick shift box and a regular interior because I bet that would be an awesome rival to modern sports cars, it wouldn’t be cheap tho
Same with the G40/junior - maybe an Elise rival.
Evora?
F-Type?
GTR?
435i/M4/M4 GTS/Alpina equivalent?
No shortage of fast 6-cylinder coupes.
I would stick with an SMG. Just better over all and I have some sore feelings concerning Manuals now. Besides Manuals are too slow and unwieldy for today's performance expectations and metrics. Also, you can talk about fun all you like, but when it comes time to "put up or shut up", in lieu of more power, smother more consistent power is required.

Wuuuuttt I knew about the V8 vegetable juice, but didn’t know they did another version! Ahhhh the things we learn everyday!
Your friends at Rev Media!
Woahhh didn’t know either man!!
I have one of these engines in my 12 mustang 3.7. Manley rods and pistons, ported intakes, coyote 80 mm throttle body, 6r80 with a Circle d Convertor with 355 gears with Catalytic convertors. It revs to 7700 and pushed my 3300lb mustang to 12.6 @ 108mph in the 1/4. 316whp @7100 holds 300whp all the way to 7700 rpm. on interstate it can hit 160mph. Its the Greatest v6 ford ever built.
Love V6's. My Renault Alpine GTA V6 Turbo is a blast. Makes an awesome sound and just loves to rev. Also had 2 Laguna II V6's (asme engine as Clio V6) and again awesome engine. With an induction kit the noise would pretty much wake the dead.
I have a gta turbo too, love the sound but the best of all is the viper twin turbo, the sound is unbeatable even my V12 VANTAGE sound soft compared!
I would have loved to hear it from the outside
The engine sounds as depressed and grateful as he is....
I've been a fan of V6s ever since I owned a Mazda Lantis Type-R. They have a very smooth and high revving 2.0L V6 that sounds lovely!
this thing needs to be made into a production car
Thank you Drivetribe, you listened to the comments about putting music over the (more important) soundtrack of the engine and this time let the engine sing. Much appreciated.
What a beautiful machine! All the cars there but that G55 is really a nice bit of kit.
My VQ35 is awesome!
Love going to btcc then seeing these on the same day they sound awesome and look awesome
I wonder if Ginetta will do some V6 Mustang tuning now? If I had the money I'd at least ask. This is so very cool. Thank you.
This looks fun af to drive
Great car! The only problem for me watching these is I get a little sad that I will never own a car like this. Not even a sports car on my wage. Still I love to see them, and you never know I might win the lottery. 😂👍🏻
Did you rev it above 3000rpm from the in car footage?
One of my favorite cars in Project Cars 2
Love my 3.7. They sold well too btw, idk what they were talking about when they said it didn't. Ford just wanted to push the ecoboost 4 cylinder and didn't seem interested in keeping the 3.7 around. But it's an awesome engine.
Exactly. It had nothing to do with it being too "slow." It performed well, was cheaper to buy, and it was just as cheap to run (plus, it sounded much better than the rough-sounding 4-cylinder ecoboost). Ford just wanted to push their new engine line.
That's why I love my V6 Busso engined Alfa GTV
This dude always looks like he’s wearing someone else’s clothes
When is the rest of season 4 of the grandtour comeing out. I know it is tough to edit an episode during this pandemic but I expected at least one episode to come out already.
Is gt racing the same as endurance racing like 24 hours at le mans or the other 8 hrs races? Trying to get into other racing sports but I dont know what gt 1 2 3 4 are
That mondeo st200 already proved that. Maybe give that the love that it deserves?
Wow! It's gorgeous 😍
I love 6 cylinders, in-line , boxed/ H or V.
Drive by this Dude we never heard of and the Trio
i WANT A GINETTTTTTTA. They also gives you racing lessons when you purchase their cars, thats so great
im interested to see what two of them strapped together would be like. kinda like a w-12
love my 3.7 stang
I love V6s I've had once it's 2001 a V6 Mitsubishi 24th valve mivec, it's extremely efficient makes a lovely sound and I think the JDM side produced some fantastic v6 engines. Proves that now being adopted into a lot of sports cars. We need to celebrate all combustion engines now while we still can and the sounds of the V6 v8 and V10 should be loud and lauded👍 lovely Bentley I have a Scalextric model of that is the closest I'll probably ever get to one. Wasn't that the last all British car to win?
How off centre was the steering wheel at the end?!
v6 tt owner here it sounds awesome :)
Mike, when are you and James going to do something cool together again?

You can make any engine great when you change enough parts!
What happened last week? In regards to Jeremy's car?
Are they legel in the USA
would that be the 3.7 V6 that we have NEVER had over here in the UK (in a Ford at least)? and dont they still use a version of it, with turbos in the Transit and Kuga equivalent (among others) in the USA?
What did I miss, what happened last week with Clarckson ?

I just bought a 98’ v6 yesterday for my first car, they did me like that :(
Looks like a V6 Viper hooked up with TVR insanity.
Well the Ford GT and the Honda NSX are V6's and they sound crazy cool
Review the 2020 Lotus Evora GT (6 cylinder)
i want to see the new maserati nettuno engine in there
My 3000gt vr4 and my genesis coupe have a V6. I used to be pretty uninterested in v6 sport cars until I drove a few models a couple times.
Fell in love instantly.
Ford should make a 3.0l I6 out of two Fiesta ST engines and put that in the Mustang
Why not stick 4 of them together and create a v12?
@@karlkukk7080
The 1.0L Inline-3, if it works well, then Yeah. But what would Ford put it in? It would be physically too long to put in the current Mustang. I WILL NOT fit in the GT or any other car FORD Currently produces. And Unless it is Truck or SUV, Ford literally has nothing that such an engine would fit.
The only option I can think is Ford sells it as Crate engine. I would do that engine for the Fatory5 F9R, when that kit comes out.
DocWolph in terms of length an I6 and a V12 would be the same. But the only use for this engine would be a race car, since the fuel consumption would be absolutely insane.
or reintroducing the barra 🤷🏻♂️
Has everyone forgotten that it's a race bred engine, that v6 has been put in radicals for years, long before the mustang
That thing looks like a TVR and a Lotus had a kid
What happened last week?
6 cylinder engines are my favourite type of engine
Ginetta are so cool 👍👌
Wait, what happened last week?
Dude, your ignorance regarding the 3.7L, and it's use in the Mustang is stunning.
I love a V6
0:29 Looks like a G40 is going to shoot out of the front to try and rip off Sigourney Weaver's face
Looks like an Aston Martin, a Merc AMG and a Veyron had a baby. Who knows how mechanical conception works? I like it.
Real wish they had built a road vertion of the G55.
I want a Ginetta so bad! Everyone (at least here in America) sleeps on this car, but it is a 100% track ready, turn key, go fast, have fun, race car! I would go for a G40 GT5 but America only gets the G40 Cup. The G55 GT4 is well out of my range, for now!
Performance isn’t the only reason they discontinued it. A single turbo kit on a 3.7 w/ an E85 tune can put it over 600whp.
Does Ginetta sell a road going version of this car? If not, they should consider it.
Mike... can you ask Ginetta how the Akula is coming along?
This car makes me think of the cars from misnight club 2 and others.
Can I get that exhaust note for my mustang sheesh
It looks like a combination of a TVR and Karma (Fisker).
I'll keep with the straight 6's
So what happened last week ? 😂🤔
I agree, the normal Mustang V6 isn't a great option for the Mustang. But I've seen and heard a Mustang with a Barra inline-6 from the Australian Ford Falcon - those engines came with a turbo option which could put out 400hp stock.
Very interesting car , why such a slow drive tho ?
What happened to Clarkson's alpha?
I’m wondering the same thing. I don’t see any videos on Drivetribe about it

Sounds exactly like the Radical RXC GT Road
Ford 3,7 is derived from an engine which originates from Porsche. Porsche developed a 3.0 lit version for the Cayenne and finally sold it when it chose the cheaper Audi plant .... Ford used it in Jaguar S-type as AJ30 & Mazda..... Cosworth helped redesigning the head for even better flowing... So it has 'race' characteristics...
Zenvo and TVR had a baby.
It's like if a Lotus, Noble, and TVR had a baby
This thing looks like mashup of honda s2000 and TVR's
I love my ‘17 v6 Mustang. 6speed manual of course and the stock 300hp is plenty.
