  • I had been meaning to checkout the old viaduct just north of Scotch dyke old station, but just never got round to it until today. Although I think I should have waited around another 4 month as it’s all wildly overgrown . Still I managed to get to walk across the viaduct.

Thank you for providing this content, I really enjoy it. During the 1970's my school, Austin Friars at Carlisle held weekly cross country runs and a part of the course passed across the recently closed Waverly route. A group including myself would pause in a stationary guards van which was parked on the previous Waverly mainline, light a fire in the stove and hang out. Somehow, our housemasters never detected our skiving!

Brilliant , just keeping warm then . They still do cross country runs as I live not far from the school and see the kids struggling up the scaur back to the school 😂👍

A lot of the structures on the Waverley route survived. I think it was because it was a later closure, in 1969. Earlier closures had everything demolished as quickly as possible.
A lot of the original bridges were refurbished and reused on the part of the Waverley route which was reopened.

Yes thankfully lots of the bridges are still in good nick today and with some maintenance lived on for another life .

that’s to explore on another day , the path on the north side of the bridge is so overgrown and I guess it’s private land ??
