Calibration methods are viewed. Calibration using microspheres is emphasized and a demonstration of the method is shown. Base on a series of blogs titled "is Sieve Calibration the Holy Grail?"

ASTM E11 in not a calibration process. It is a process that determines if a sieves meets established criteria. I states the acceptable tolerances. These tolerance become a significant as mesh sizes become smaller. Calibration on the other hand is a process that relates the actual performance of a sieve. This can be done through the use of master samples, a master sieve stack or calibration spheres.

Is there a better way for me to understand how to calibrate a sieve, with astm E11-09, I read through it several times and can not grasp it, my company does not have the micro spheres and expects me to calibrate sieves my using measuring calipers on the openings, and I need to know if there is any calibration record sheets that can be used to record my results.

The concept of checking sieves by ASTM E11 is to observe a sample of openings in the mesh, and recording the dimension of the openings. Applying one of three statistical formula gives the category of sieve that this mesh will satisfy. The gradings are based on a statistical probability the the mesh is in conformance to the stated E11 dimensions. Hope this helps a little.
