Awesome video and tuts..your content is always spot on! I have a non foodie video question. The non photography lighting on your wall above the lens shelf...is that custom work? I am looking for that sort of lighting to put in my office. Thanks!!
This has to be the dumbest comparison I've ever seen. Why would you say you're comparing a light and then use completely different equipment for both shots?
@@wongwu he could do a light only comparison for sure, but i think the point was that you can use cheap lighting gear as a whole and get decently close to pro gear...
Same here. It’s seems like the flood light with a diffuser attached will be almost as solid as the aperture lights. Great vid I just needed a way to control my flood light. Those flood light lit up a dark club scene which with color grading came out great but my clients had to get accustomed to the brightness thanks.
You really encourage me to go harder with everything I already have. I usually crave for better gears and I lost some money to things that I don't really use. Thank you for making all these useful videos, I'm sure it helps people like me and many others to save more than a million $. You did a great deed to the world, my friend!
Hey I used work lights with parchment paper 30 years ago when I was shooting film... I am glad that in the era of digital cameras some people still use it. I had at least 10-15 of those installed in my house and to expand even further I had barn doors on some of them which were painted matte black to direct lights were I wanted them. That's how I started shooting portraits on the budget and once I have set all settings on my camera (film body) I never moved that body out of studio, just to make sure that I do not mess my settings. Nice take on that!
Subscribed almost immediately. Saw the background and the lots of DIY looking stuff and the fact that you were talking about not spending on ridiculously overpriced stuff vs buying practical stuff. Will be using these and other tips, thank you!
Been thinking of picking up a work light for the garage, and after seeing a couple photographers use them to obtain great shots, I think I need to visit the hardware store. Thanks for sharing!
Being a very monotone speaker myself i congratulate you on the enthusiasm and attitude your bring to your videos. I hope to improve my voice by watching your videos!
GREAT Video! Most likely the difference was in the camera's Dynamic Range and Color Depth, besides the MUCH better piece of Glass, having much better MicroContrast. So, there's little to no difference between the lights. But the transport convenience.
Hi, I love your videos, you help me a lot with my shots to look more professional, and you changed my mind about what I can do with a low budget gear, greetings from Ecuador.
This is a great video..!!! So helpful! I just started my RUclips channel and don’t know anything about photography or even editing videos. Your channel is helping a lot !!! Thank you so much
Excellent work. Good information and you have a really nice on camera style. Yep, those lights can get wicked hot! But, hey, ya gotta start somewhere right?
I remember the day you've told me to combine my holistic lifestyle coaching with photography, watching your videos actually inspired me, which one of your courses do you think will help me start, i'm interested in food styling and food photography a lot? masterclass?
You are a man of your word!! thank you so much for making this video. I just bought an LED panel for $150 from Amazon but am still having trouble with the setup getting the lighting down in my garage. This video helps!
Yeah I hope this helps! I work in watt power so I'm not sure how powerful your LED is, so you may want to use a single sheet of paper or a thin diffusor. However the idea is the same
Awesome video, wish I saw this earlier. I just bought my first softbox lighting kit last week. Your videos provide a ton of value for me, thanks a lot!
This was a great idea. Really shows that all the kit is not what makes the most difference. Your staging was top and even an iPhone made a decent image. Nice video
Actually what makes the difference is knowing how to use the kit and he is using it in a terrible way in this video... none of those pictures are professional and they look terrible. I hope this video is just a joke:)
LOL, I use 2 of these in my livingroom near my desk to do my youtube videos (and for some photography) I got the LED versions though at Home Depot for I think 29.95 each because they don't get so hot and the light seems a bit better than the hot bulb types!
Yo! Just stumbled on your channel. You make fantastic content! Really well produced videos too. I hope your channel grows, i'm definitely subscribing. Thank you
Great video, I used this type of setup when I first started. I now use a yongnuo 560iii and reciever for off flash. Gives me better control and is still a very cheap setup in its own right.
Just a tip for all of you. They also make these types of lights with LED's. The halogen light's will not take any abuse (they break relatively easy) and they are brutally hot like he said. I bought mine at Walmart for like $20 and they are plenty bright. Have an awesome day!
omg i just used parchment paper over a desk lamp i have and used some white paper ( i didn't have black boards) to box the subject and WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE! YOU ARE BRILLIANT. this literally cost me $0 cuz I didn't have to buy anything. but i think i will at least buy a white bulb cuz the only i had is a yellow one. Those ugly sharp shadows are finally gone thank u!!!
great! the light is the key. i work in food photography too, and it's very hard to make my clients understand that... they always ask me to go on their stores and make the shoot there, but i always say: ok, but you'll have to turn off all the lights in the store 😂 that's when tey inmediately say "ok, let's go to your studio" yey!
Thank you!! yeah it's really important to turn off the lights when using constant lights, but even with studio strobes, pesky overhead lights sometimes reflect in the plates and glassware. thanks for checking out my channel, more to come!
As someone who is just getting into photography thank you for your videos. They are very inspiring. If someone can answer why photographers use strobes instead of brighter lights
Man you should make a budget top down set up for a DSLR/ mirrorless, I've searched and can't find a solution for under $50. Love your videos, keep it up.
That sounds like a good idea, although for under $50, I don't know. A single light stand usually cost more. However, it can be done if you make it out of wood, use a saw and drill it the ceiling. I have a plan for that, but I'm not sure if that would work for the average joe
Be sure to check out the full article on the blog where you can see the side by side images of both lights with dSLR's for a better comparison.

We Eat Together hey, what size soft box did you use on your strobe?
We Eat Together thanks for this hack. Ill try this sometime. I wonder if you could try using flashlight next time
We're here for the light, should have used the same exact gear for both photos except for the light source of course.
