Hey Guys thanks for watching!!! If you're interested in these lights for your photography get them here *Godox SLB60 Lights: amzn.to/2TO53EE *Soft Boxes: amzn.to/2I9WP8f *Grid Set: amzn.to/2U5hAUc
hey man, i own the Godox's AD600, and when i turn the handle, there is a feature to allow me to pull out the handle as i turn. Have you tried to see if you can pull the handle out so that i won't scratch the body of the light? (it should be a spring-loaded feature)
I have the SL60W from Godox. They are the non-battery versions, and they are fantastic. They have a really good SRI rating, so really good colour rating. The remote controls makes working with these ones, a lot easier too. Great video btw.
As always, great video! Very informative. I have the Godox SL-200 which has more light output for video (however no battery). Only one thing, there are so many ads interrupting your fabulous videos!
I am also very happy with this light system. The fact that you can work with or without wires is also great when you shoot at a location that has poor supply for power outlets. Thank you for this review my mind is at peace that I purchased this light.
Falcon EYES SO-28TD is a cost effective option that is battery and outlet powered and it doesn’t even need diffusion. Awesome constant light for product and general lighting. Gerald Undone has an awesome review on it. Check it out!
How does the Godox SLB60 compare with GVM 150W LED Video Light? Price is comparable. Quality? Power? Features? Are these silent for video? Thank you. I really enjoy your videos. Well done.
There not 100% silent, but if using a lav mic it’s fine. I couldn’t find many reviews on the GVM, I guess if your looking for a RGB light then GVM would be a good choice
i have to say, i love the delivery of your instruction and the passion that you have behind it! Keep up the great work! I have the plug in versions of these lights and had them out on a shoot recently, they really made a huge difference in my shoot.
About the adjustment knob thingy at 11:35, i'm pretty sure you can pull that handle away from the body to turn it sort of like a ratchet so it doesn't hit your light. I noticed some of my cheap flash s-brackets with a similar handle do that.
I am actually considering the Godox ML60 as a supplement for my Godox AD600 (I find the strobe a bit too time consuming since there is a lot of shooting and adjusting). The ML60 is also for bit of video filming. Do you find he SLB60 powerful enough for food photography? And for video? Do you have problems with fan noise? Thanks in advance ;-)
I think what you need is light 🤪 In my last video I use a Godox SL 150 with a huge 48” octobox and the lens at 14f because is a Laowa 24mm macro. For food is insane that lens! I will prepare a new video of drinks sooner :)
I'm a beginner, even my camera hasn't arrived yet, and I'm looking to start buying a godox sl60 + two yn360III to take pictures of food. the camera i bought is an xt3 + 35mm f2, do you think it would be a good start?
Just press down on the button on the handle and you can pull it out as you rotate to tighten or loosen. Works that way on all Godox/Flashpoint monolights.
They do look amazing for everyday use and I like their level of warmth, quite often constant lighting is very cold. As you pointed out you have kept your monos, I think they’ll be needed for all the splash shots etc and I’m not sure how the physics of constant lighting will overcome the advantages of super high speed sync.
You probably already know this by now (if im right), but im pretty sure that lever it ratcheting! Pull it out and reset it into place so it doesn't hit the body!.
At some point I would like to do product shots and food photography I'm a video guy expanding my repertoire of visual offerings . I just have to keep on trying till I get there and then when I'm ready I will invest in a medium format camera like the Fuji GFX cameras, since I can not in no way afford nor justified the purchase of a Hasselblad and lenses. That larger format will really make the tones and tonal range worth it's weight in gold allowing a better end result and I can demand higher prices from clients when they see the difference. I am of course getting way ahead of myself here but that is the direction that I am setting for.
Nice video! But what about freeze something?, I see that you have all time 1/6 - 1/15. Can this light work with 1/500, 1/800. Or higher. For freezing something in food photography. Thank you
it's a constant light and it's not powerful enough to use that high of shutter speed without sacrificing ISO. You would need a light 5 stops brighter. I'm also not sure what you're freezing at that shutter speed. I personally, would get studio strobes at that point.
Hi, to freeze actions , 1/250 for canon and 1/200s is enough with good strobe flash light. In those cases , it is not HSS only helps for freezing the fast moving subject, it is the strobe flash which records the subject's movement, with ISO 100 or 200. ( again depending on strobe power settings.).
You know so much and are so detailed. Just a ton of info! I recently bought the aputure 120d ii but probably would have been better off with the savings on one of these.
November 2019 I bought one of the SL60W (AC powered) and a Godox pop-up softbox - 38" (80cm) square. The softbox came with a speedlite Bowens bracket, not suitable for the SL60W. I then ordered a Bowens ring by Godox suitable as a go between for the box and the SL60W. A word of advice on the rings; they come in different dimensions of diameter and the size of the locking tabs, affecting security of fit to both the light and the box, even within a brand. e.g the Godox speedlite ring is 10 mm larger diameter than the Godox accessory version. That's a night and day difference in the box about to fall off the mount. So if you can, order those things as a combo. I ended up making some of my own rings on a 3D printer. The SL60W box included that 7" aluminum dish and a few different "shower cap" style diffusers that stretch over that small dish. A common package listed on Amazon. I can't see myself using the shower caps. I keep the box because it packs everything nicely in shaped foam. For shot setups like this episode, 50% power is about all I need. For doing an interview subject from about 6 feet, I estimate 70% and up in an unlit room. I don't notice the fan noise at all. I'd be putting a lapel mic on the subject anyway. I'm very happy with the product to price ratio on both products.
I just picked up the Godox SL-60W aka the 5600k and wired (no battery) version this past Friday. From a rough set of test the light performs great. Much better than the light I was using previously. I plan to post some example videos so people can see how it is using it with a MFT camera. What do you think about using those deep parabolic soft boxes for food videos/photography? I was planning on getting a 38” or maybe smaller one.
Skyler, thanks for the informative video. I've been wanting to buy a video light to shoot slowmo broll of food. Would you recommend the sl60w for shooting at 120fps? Does it have enough power? Also I've heard quite a few reports of flickering. How's your experience?
Do you thin you would move over to constant lighting over studio strobes or keep photographing with strobes? Thanks for all the awesome tutorials and videos you keep posting.
I always LOVE your cinematography, not just your stills. Do you light those sequences as well? Or do you have a separate cinematographer? Finally, you look like you're using just one light with a diffuser on those shots....is that right? Keep sharing and thanks!
Wow! Found this channel by accident, and was really impressed with this video. Great info, great storytelling, great shots, and of course, great lighting. Dude--nice work! Big props! Keep up the great work!
I have never used light but I want to try to photograph for stock various scenes that I would make on my desk and sometimes food. Can I do this with with slb60 or are you suggesting something else for a beginner
I know you said it doesnt matter for shooting still food photography which light (yellow or daylight balanced) but wonder if you could explain further if it would be beneficial to buy the daylight if going to shoot video and stills with the light eventually?
It really depends on what ambient light you have as you’ll most likely want to match that with your constant light, but if this is your only light source then it doesn’t matter
Just curious, your video really made me want to get this light for my RUclips knife videos and food photography, but it is currently unavailable. What similar model would you recommend with the same functions?
I bought one SLB60 and one SL-60. Used for food / drink shoots - however the SLB60 runs out of battery pretty quick even when it's plugged into the mains, it still dies and turns off mid-shoot! Is there a way to have the power running off the mains whilst the battery charges? It's very impractical if it dies mid shoot and needs to be charged - even though its plugged into mains?!
I'm also on the lookout for some constant light which isn't a fortune like so many of the beautiful LED light panels. As I move to video from photography I want to use some of my Lastolite modifiers so I have a familiar light quality and controllability. My cameras for video aren't great at high ISO and for the most part, I don't enjoy cranking the ISO either. I've also looked at the Aputure LED lights, which recently seem to have gone up in price as popular You Tubers recommend them. I've heard that Canon's best ISO for video, regarding dynamic range, is 800 but my 80D never does well much above 400 for video, unless the scene is lighter and the noise is hidden in the bright spots. I want to light video creatively on location, so battery power is going to be a huge help, but I'm not sure these batteries will last long enough. Obviously, I could buy more batteries, but then we get more expensive and moves the choices into a different price bracket. I would imagine I'd be using these at pretty much full power most of the time. Will definitely check these out though. Thanks so much for the honest review. It's really helpful to see how well they work for stills and video. Love the channel and thanks for being an inspiration for creative growth. Cheers JT
Thanks for sharing this, I use an 135W LED Bulb with a soft box for my shoots and it makes the shutter speed go really really slow. I am always on a tripod so not a problem but with action shots I need more light. So this 60W light is then even less powerful than the normal LED bulb right or is it something different?
Totally agree with you on everything! I do a lot of food photography on location and I use two SLB60w with octoboxs. I have in my car two godox mains adaptors and leads for longer shoots just in case batteries fail. The handle is awful and it broke twice on me. Godox where useless even thought I contacted them 3/4 times.. Eventually I bought two extra Bowens adaptors plates for AD200 and swopped the handles on both my lights. Now there are fine and sweep passed the body of the casing. I even made a video to show Godox and they never took any notice.
Thanks for all your work, Skyler, I love watching you and can't wait for new videos each time. That said, you totally hit the spot for me with this one, just what I've been looking into recently! Different topic, while living in Oman, did you learn any Arabic? I lived in Tunisia for a few years studying it about 10 years ago, so just something I thought I'd ask. :) Have a great week and many great shots!
I got a question, I want to buy this light for food photography, which temperature light is better and why? Does the 3000K is better to pop up the colors straight out of camera?
I would say stick to daylight 5600K unless your shooting video with other tungsten lights in the room like I am (which is why I ordered the 3000K) If no other lights are present (especially natural light) then 3000k is fine, since you can then white balance either in post or in camera.
Thanks that's so useful. I also wonder about soft boxes that are affordable, retractable and easy to store that can work with these light... I don't have a lot of space! thanks
can the battery version still be plugged into the wall? And.....a light like this isn't gonna do much for portraits unless you're shooting at like 1.4 with a full frame camera. Ya? I'm trying to find a continuous light I could use for portraits with my APSC camera. I guess I should probably just go for flashes/strobes.
Hello just wanted to ask why is the shutter speed so low? Is it for more ambiant light to pass? I would have reduced the F stop and increased the shutter speed?
Brilliant recommendation there. I was just about to buy a continuous light. A quick question- any samples to see for fast shutter shots? Something at 1/800 or 1/1000? Have you tried any shot at that speed?
Had been looking at these lights for a couple days, awesome timing on this review ! Could you give us some info on the table tops you use for your photography ?
Can you tell if there is any photographic kit up to 300 USD that i can purchase for starting my own photography, or any advise from you to buy some softboxes and lights to start ?
Hii, In this battery version, can we light this up with electricity source if incase we dont want to attach the battery with this led light or this will work only with battery. Thanks

can i ask you question about slb60 ??
SLB60 (battery and power line) or sl60 without battery and only power line??
What do you recommend??

Brilliant recommendation there. I was just about to buy a continuous light. A quick question- any samples to see for fast shutter shots? Something at 1/800 or 1/1000? Have you tried any shot at that speed?
I haven’t tried
Had been looking at these lights for a couple days, awesome timing on this review ! Could you give us some info on the table tops you use for your photography ?
So awesome - love how you've found a great balance between photo/video tutorial and gear review... great value added, whichever side people watch for!
🙏 that’s awesome thanks for the encouragement
Thank you for your chanle! would love to see more lighting videos!
You are Master in video light. When will you do a personalized workshop?
Can you tell if there is any photographic kit up to 300 USD that i can purchase for starting my own photography, or any advise from you to buy some softboxes and lights to start ?
