Great video. The constant light looks more natural to me. I have all three, but lately I've just been using constant light. It's much more convenient and mine take the ubiquitous L mount batteries (in addition to AC power), which adds further to the convenience.
Having shot hundreds of restaurants menus, I found early on that using flash or strobes inside a working, open for business restaurant, is just to disruptive and intrusive to paying customers attempting to enjoy a meal. So because of that I use leds inside a restaurant, if it's before or after hours with no customers I usually use a strobe.
Great video! Constant lights are bad for shooting cold food since they heat up the subject quickly, but they're still my favorite light. I say get constant lights first then move on to the strobes while you're learning.
Ive shot a quite a few restaurant location jobs now. Generally there isnt much room or time to drag in to much equipment. Id definitely agree with your comments about needing hybrid coverage, that's now my experience today. Id go for a powerful small battery powered led if possible. Usually tho I'll find a window and I use a reflector.
Would you think the Godox ML60 (60 watt) is enough for the use you suggest? Is is sooooo wonderfully small and portable. But Would I need to go with for instance the Godox VL150 (150 watt) instead?
Thank you so much! I’ve watched a million videos on this and finally think I got what I was looking for 🙏. 3yrs later would you answer still be the same I wonder?
Actually nowadays with the godox ad600, ad400, and the ad200 the difference in price between these and good flashes is not much so I just chose to go with godox strobes, I have an ad600 and two ad200s. I was using flashes but I sold them and just upgraded to those.
Godox AD200 with accessories....solution for a lot of situation. Also four Canon or Nikon speedlites cost same as two set of studio light by Godox or Jinbei. Set consist of 3 or 4 studio light with everything (stanks and modifiers .
Great video, thanks! What lighting do you recommend for a fishing e-commerce? I take pictures of artificial baits, reels, rods, bags, pocketknives, among others...
Super useful this video. I recently started shooting Product/Food Photography for local businesses in my town (small town and no previous food photo experience) at their request. I usually shoot Cars, Portraits and Events however, I tested both my Godox SL60W which is lovely, but my AD300's with the modelling lights and 85mm softboxes were just perfect.
I am actually considering the Godox ML60 as a supplement for my Godox AD600 (I find the strobe a bit too time consuming since there is a lot of shooting and adjusting). The ML60 is also for bit of video filming. Do you find he ML60 powerful enough for food photography? Thanks in advance ;-)
@@skylerburtphotos bought my version, thats the less noisy version on a warehouse sale from amazon. prices went up this year but im over the moon with my light. cant beat it bang for buck. love your video's man. ill do a binge watch coming weekend.

Congratulations Skyler, the studio looks like my DREAM studio! --the video is just in a perfect timing for me cause I'm about to start using artificial light for the very first time and I was looking for an advice!
Thank you! It’s a very nice space to work in. Yeah artificial lights are my favorite, but I would say for 98% of food and beverage you can do it with either strobes or continuous lights equally as well. It’s just the other 2% that strobes win out. It’s all about your budget, and if you plan on shooting video
great stuff good to see this comparison as often thinking that my speedlites are overkill for still food and product shoots especially these winter months where its dark early and easy to shoot in darkness!
Congratulations on the move! I'm in SLC and Love it! Check out the Springville art museum if you find yourself in Utah county. I grew up down the road from there. Garry Price has some cool status throughout the town, aswell as the state 😉
Thanks yeah it’s a really fun city so far!! I’ll have to check that out, thanks for the tips! Always love museums, it’s been a while since I’ve lived in an urban area so I’ll have to enjoy it while I’m here
Looks like a great studio. Will you be working remotely with clients as I gather it’s a bit of a drive from major centres? Is that the latest Godox LED light?
Excellent breakdown. I come from a video background and have a lot of constant lighting but now interested in picking up a strobe to test. What's your favorite color temperature (in kelvin) for food photography. Personally I like a little warmth (just below neutral) to the shot but see a lot of photographers shooting more Day White. I'm guessing this is more standard. I'm interested to hear your opinion.
Well, videographers & film guys have to use constant light sources, still photogs have an option, constant or strobe. Both groups produce good work. Of course, as you said, strobes freeze action--pouring beer, etc. And of course, color temp and spectral distribution should not be overlooked--clients hate it when their product has even a hint of the wrong color. Groups of strobes have been used successfully together as a single source for decades. Constant light, however, should not be overlooked. Back in the 1960s at Elmer Moss' studio, the story goes, a shot of a great number of ice cream scoops in one shot was done with hot lights and with a view camera--possibly an 8x10. He did the shot successfully; so it can be done.
I don't do a lot of flash photog, but I've picked up the Godox tt685 and the bowen's adapter. I really love using it with my softbox and the godox receiver. The fact that the Tx is integrated to the flash is awesome. I was considering picking up the Godox AD200 Flash/Strobe though as it's $199... What's your thought on those?
@@skylerburtphotos Nice flex. :p The 600 does look pretty beefy on paper, including the battery, that would be a great light to use outdoors for some fill.
I was looking more for the power output, a lot of the time I need to use high apertures like f11 and up so I 500w lights I use now are ok for that but sometimes I’m topping out and would like just a little more power especially with combining modifiers

Are there any continuous lights you would recommend for traveling? We shoot photo and video but the SL60W is a bit bulking to travel with. Is it time for flash? Or are there any options?
Please can you help me, I will deeply appreciate it. I am trying to find out how to do a top shot set up with my DSLR, can you link me to the stuff I need, on Amazon? I am very confused and a beginner. I am a good cook and want to present my recipes to the world, but my top shot camera right now sucks and I want to know how to do it with the DSLR. I saw you had two metal rods kind of thing set up with the camera. Can you tell me how to do that?
Hey Skyler! Congrats for your new place, looks amazing!!! Quick question for you. During this video you made a comment that you never shot in ISO 100. How come? Your photos are always so sharp and clear. How do you achieve quality with higher ISO? BTW thanks for this video. I am about to purchase my first speedlight and this video is super helpful 🙏

I just got an SL60W and I've been pretty impressed with the quality so far. Nice to see Skyler using some gear I can afford! haha
Excuse me, I want to ask, is SL60w continuous light or strobe light? or can it be used for both?
@@adminidaroh8570 It is continuous only.
Can you freeze water motion with this at hi shuter and low iso?
@@AndiFalah Probably not very well. I would defer to a small flash for that.

Constant light is key for video and photo ty sir. Been trying to figure out the lights.

Simple and easy to understand!!
Best video I’ve seen so far
Thanks 🙏🏻
I’m a sucker for my 150 W continuous light
Yeah, they’re great little lights for the price
Ever since I got my Aputure 300d mkii’s, they’re all im using for everything!
For the strobe on the go than I would suggest the Flashpoint AD200 Pro TTL strobe with 200 watt seconds.
Having shot hundreds of restaurants menus, I found early on that using flash or strobes inside a working, open for business restaurant, is just to disruptive and intrusive to paying customers attempting to enjoy a meal. thank you for the video, it's really helpful. May I know the link you recommend for the boom arm stand tripod on the top down images. Thank you!

Great topic Skylar. I love my stobes! My biggest challenge is understanding more in detail about strobe settings and basic education.
we shoot a strobe with softbox through another defussion screen. that SL60w is a great light, we use that one for video light on overhead video work.
Yeah that’s a great setup especially for shooting glassware, for the price you can’t beat the SL60!!
