- The aptly named red throated loon calling out on Cat Lake, British Columbia. It was so loud if you were there, but the video may require a little extra volume.
There are only five species of loons worldwide, all living in the northern hemisphere. The red throated loon (Gavia stellata) is only vocal on breeding grounds and otherwise remains silent. They spend their summers up in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and winter on the Great Lakes and both coasts as far as Florida and northern Mexico.
The red throated loon is the smallest of the loon species and also the one with the northernmost habitat. Some individuals nest up in northern Greenland.
In Britain and Ireland, they are called the red-throated diver.

Wow, great footage!! Have not seen one in the wild yet...just the common. Wonderful!! Bruce and Otis
It's quite a treat to see a different species of loon. Having said that, I will always find magic in being around the common loons! Hope you're having a great weekend!
Is he calling for a mate?
What a beautiful song and with the lake sounds all around...such peace.
I believe it is a call to make contact. It was an amazing experience to see and hear!
Incredible capture! A Huge Thankyou from far away India, where only peacocks are found to produce a similar sound. Warm greetings💖Ma
Thank you for the kind words! Now that you mention it, it does sound like a peacock's call!

Thank you for the kind comment! Hope your summer is going well!
I never heard one call; it's quite different from the common loon! Fascinating, because I'm in Europe (the Netherlands) and this is the only loon we regularly get as a winter visitor, and I never hear or read much about it. Thank you!
You're welcome! So far, I've only seen the common and red throated loon. They're so beautiful, I hope to see more!
What an awesome video!! ❤️❤️❤️

This is an Artic Loon.
Just curious, what are you basing that on?
I'm genuinely interested, what are you basing that identification on?
Nope
