Giving yourself a strict time limit and a compulsory play session every day sounds like the best way to kill enjoyment out of playing games and making it a chore... I'm glad I can watch youtubers who go through that kind of stuff rather than experience it myself lol!
This approach works if you have a list of 3-5 new games that you want to try before refunding. Not so much for whittling down that lifetime backlog. If a game has been in your backlog for that long, chances are you already know you want to play it.
Or that you forgot that you even owned them. I'm sometimes surprised what games I got in my backlog, sink into them for days, want to play the next one but instantly forgetting its existence again for up to years.
The algorithm served me this video and I hope it does for many more. You deserve all the subs! Love that you enjoyed Hades, with Hades 2 being in early access it is the best time to jump into the series right now.
This remind me of the one chapter challenge readers do :) But it would properly be more enjoyable to play an hour of a game until you find a game you want to continue playing :)
Awesome Video. My favorite Puzzle games are definitely the Talos Principle, it's DLC and the sequel, I can highly recommend them, in my personal Opinion while it is calmer and not as comedy focused as a lot of Puzzle games, being more philosophical, it's definitely worth playing if you take your time and don't try to rush through.
suprisingly good Video for a channel with only 110 subs. decent script, decent editing, decent pacing. Would love to see more edit: would love to see somewhere (videotimeline, videodesciption or through a small box in the video), which game is on screen, so i dont have to skip around the video to find out
fellow small channel here! loved the pacing and framing of this video, so I subbed on both my accounts :D keep up the awesome work, and I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!
You should make full videos on the rest of some of these games. Most notably inscryption. I think you would make a great video essay for it. If you have the time
This is quite a relatable video, I'm a designer and I started a similar challenge for myself. I give myself 30 minutes to play a new game every day and I think 30 minutes is a good time frame, enough to feel what's good in a game but not too long that it becomes a chore :)
hell yeah The Saboteur. For Sunless Sea, you basically explore around, do quests that you find interesting and earn money from trading. It has some deep quests and story, but you really just need to look around and figure out what you want to do first. Doing the Salt Lions is a good beginner way to make some money and get some quests I'm kinda sad that you bounced off Amid Evil as it's the only boomer shooter that I've really thoroughly enjoyed.
I definitely agree with your description of Sunless Sea, though I think the goal of "making money" is a trap. The game certainly *pretends* that is a goal, but honestly making money is very boring in that game. Infiltrating the isle of masks, or learning the mysteries of the postal service, is where the fun lies.
I have a massive backlog due to stalking free game promotions and ridiculous bundles, so I've thought about doing this! Thank you for being the guinea pig. Great video!
Omg you’re sub count is so low wth??? I literally thought u had at least 500.000k subs cuz u sound so professional and the editing is something else! So professional bro
This was fantastic! Fun, thanks for making it! I laughed to see Sunless Sea as the game you bounced off from. I totally believe it. That game made the biggest, most enjoyable impact on me more than any game I've played these past 5 years, but it's also, honestly, a *bad* game. It was made by writers, not game devs, and it shows. Rock Paper Shotgun has a great video on why it's both brilliant and deeply flawed. Basically, your mission is to screw up your courage to venture into the dark reaches of the map, then explore the dangers of the islands, and pray to the elder gods that you don't run out of supplies or sanity. (Your mission is to discover what adventures and weirdness awaits.) I recommend most people turn off Ironman mode (and make a manual save), because while the game loses something if you do that, the risk of players bouncing off the game when they lose 5-15 hours of progress is pretty high.
At 10:37, I braced for "another guy whose video I found randomly being a Harry Potter fan" and what that usually entails (especially with the I can forgive all kinds of sins comment) but the very next moment you proved me wrong. Fucking based man.
Cool video, and i have done similar things like in the past to narrow down my own backlog too. The thing is, when i've done this i just picked games in alphabetical order, or release date, or date added to library. If you don't try to pick games arbitrarily then you will discover, as you did, that you just get banger after banger and you fail to actually achieve the goal of the task. I also don't force myself to play a game for a full hour (or if i'm really having fun i let myself play longer). You can learn to judge a game pretty fast and can tell whether it's for you or not within only a few minutes sometimes. I also use dynamic collections on steam to work out which games i have play time in, and which ones i don't, and then i have a manual collection of games i want to return to one day.
Olli Olli didn't click with me, but Olli Olli World absolutely did, would highly reccommend that entry if you found the first one a bit weird to control
I have been doing the same as you trying to beat my backlog and I simply took a different approach. First is logged all my games on how long to beat, that way I can always sort by time taken and play the short ones first to help cut the list quickly and getting into a regular playing habbit by utilizing the positive reenforcement of looking like you are progressing. I also allow my self to play one longer game at a time and I combine these two approaches by taking advantage of a cool gimic with the steam deck. It has a battery life. I focus on playing on the deck first and depending on game it will sap the power relatively quickly especially cause I am trying to play the longer games on there, once power is low if I still feel like playing more which is rarely the case except on weekends then I try out the shortest game I have on my computer. It does not sound like the most efficient system but humans don't think in the most efficient ways. Recognizing in what aspects you can be efficient and when you can't and trying to focus on creating thta environment rather than just forcing yourself through a task is the best way to create habits. If you want to change human behavior you got to change the system firsr
Very interesting experiment! Always fun to watch people go through their backlogs, even if it's in small doses like this video, sort of motivates me to get through my own lol. Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it, but which game was your favourite out of the ones that you kept on the backlog? Also, I know you said you might return to it anyway, but I can vouch for The Witness being pretty good. The time limit was almost certainly the reason you didn't enjoy it so much, and it really shines when you have the chance to sit down and take it in at your own pace. It's not perfect by any means and you may not enjoy it after a while, it can get very arduous towards the end, I just wanted to give some reassurance that it might hit a little different on the second time around!
As a fresh face on YT myself, I love seeing a crazy good quality with a low subscriber count, but what I would love to see more is a lot higher subscriber count here. Well done bro
I was stunned to see how few subscribers you had after watching this video!! Can’t wait to see your channel blow up, you really have something great here. Also, totally feel you with the “bisexual panic” in Hades, lol
Woah what an awesome video! I was gifted Plagues tale innocence and Cult of the lamb recently so those two have really jumped up my list Really though I want to go back and finally beat Sekiro
Been a bit inspired from this myself, might even make my attempt into a video, just without the "one game every day" aspect.. Would you recommend that, or would you change more if you had the chance to redo it? Love this video, consider me a new subscriber cause I definitely want to see more!
It was pretty hellish tbh. Probably just play games one at a time and if you don't like something after an hour, try not to feel guilty about not playing more
Gamepass is the worst for this sort of thing. I see all those games and want to play them all and get so stressed about choosing that I end up playing none and getting charged monthly for the pleasure lol
@@FeelingFictional Totally agree and definitely happened to me. I was at least able to realize there are some games I just don't enjoy, but the FOMO is getting to me
There's only one thing worse than a list of games you bought and never played. List of games you started and cant come back to. This idea seems like a best fit to make your backlog even worse to be honest
Does anyone else think he's overreacting a bit about this challenge? I mean, all he has to do is for one singular hour a day play a game, not even do anything specific or stuff like that.
I think it’s more about the whiplash of only being able to play a bit of a good game before moving on to a different one. Intros are meant to hook you in and when you are subjected to hook after hook, it’s gonna make each first bite feel that less gripping. I know I know, first world problems with having to deal with playing an hour of a new game every day. But I get where he’s coming from. Sure it’s exaggerated because that’s how to make good content, but I understand the fatigue that comes from playing a new game every day
Found this via my recommended and it's a cute and good video! And have to say it was so nice to know from the first video I check that you support myself and so many people I love with trans rights.
yeahhhh bro i could not do this. my adhd couldnt handle it. one hour is nothing if we really think about it. its usually the tutorial. what would happen to me is that id forget how to play when i get back to it and id just restart the game cause i mean i only have an hour in it then i would get to the part of the game ive already played and turn it off cause ive played that part already lol
Thank you all for the crazy support on this video, it really has blown me away

Cool stuff, man! Will try out your other works.
Would love to see more about The Banner Saga. Great video!
