~50% (62/130 games) of my backlog were games I thought I would like but didn't, you can finish those pretty quickly by realizing that they are not worth playing (even if they are a good game - for me it was witcher 3 for example, sometimes it's not for you). So you can go through your list and try the games that you might not like first and your backlog could be cut in half which feels very good :D After that you can continue to play the games you can finish fast first. If you use steam you can make collections like "finished" and minimize it. the fewer games you see the less choice paralysis you'll get.
@ i'm taking a pretty relaxed approach, i just pick up whatever game sounds good to me at the time (usually have a long one and a shorter one i switch between at any given time, and once i finish one i pick up the next depending on if i finished the long or short game first), if i like it i keep playing, and if i dont i cross it off, and put it in the hidden folder on steam or playstation or whatever. honestly though, there weren't really any games this year that i picked up and just didn't want to play, so i guess i made pretty good picks. eventually i will run into some i don't like though, and when i don't like them, ill either hide it or refund it if i can. good thing is you can always unhide or just wait for it to go on sale again if you ever change your mind so its pretty no pressure
I beat 7 games/dlcs this year which is my best ever (let’s not talk about the 13 games in). Three things have really helped me, making my initial spreadsheet and separating backlog from collection, joining a Discord where we gamify beating the backlog and also keeping a gaming diary (a tip I got from another backlog vid). My diary is a notebook, and I scribble down what I did, what my next goal is in that game. Really helps when I drop a game for months and then pick it back up. This month I’ve barely picked up a controller, and that’s fine too. Knowing when to take a break is important.
The issue of my backlog is it is mainly RPGs and farming sims, two genres notorious for how time consuming they are. Yet this video is still helpful as it still had big RPGs like BG3 (one I am working on finishing by next week). Amazing video
The algorithm recommended you to me and I'm glad it did. I, too, have been a fan of Daryl's videos and used his Backlog spreadsheet idea to help provide some direction to my game completion (for me it is now in place for 2025). Really enjoyed seeing how this experience worked for you and definitely noted the lack of big RPG titles. Balancing those 100-hour games and the multitude of short indies I want to play every year is always a challenge for me. Also, as someone who recently retired from a life as a film critic with a podcast named Feelin' Film - I resonate strongly with what you say about craving that emotional reaction to the entertainment we consume and participate in. You got a new subscriber. Looking forward to what you do next!
I am going to add my two cents here. I was also in the mindset of conquering my backlog and I started with Assassin's creed Odyssey this year. After spending 100 hours with the game and no where near completion, I realized that I was absolutely not enjoying the game due to how repetitive and more importantly how unfun the game was. I moved on to Resident Evil 4 Remake, and my god it was such a revelation. It quickly made me realize that I love games that have a satisfying and impactful gameplay more than cinematic openworld games. This opened my eyes. Fast forward, end of 2024 I have gone through 10 games not only completing but absolutely enjoying my time with them because I finally understand what I enjoy and threw the rest of it out of the window. If a game does not have a satisfying and impactful gameplay loop it gets crossed off pretty quickly.
Great video! I saw the Daryl backlog vid a while back and got me thinking about how big mine's getting haha. Also ooh I see Until Then at 27:29, it's become a quick personal favourite and def my GOTY, I hope you get the chance to play it. Extremely impactful game
If you want to play one new video game per week the day until you die, you would play about 2500-4000 games in your lifetime, so choose the game carefully and spend your time wisely. That sounded a bit ominous :D
Since getting the Deck Oled, I made a rule (broke it a bit) to finish the games I bought for it and I did well so far, except I still need to finish a few. Those I finished: Dishonored, Tomb Raider Trilogy, Tales of Arise, God of War, Hellblade (2nd story I actually cared about after Infamous Second Son), Shapez 2, Octopath Traveler 2, Nova Lands, Spider-Man Remastered (again since PS), FF15, Quantum Break, Xmorph Defense and Last Epoch. Games I need to continue (not counting games I have finished on PS): Witcher 3, AC Origins, Scarlet Nexus, Lords of the Fallen, Ghostrunner 2, Metro Exodus and Sniper Elite 4 and Sleeping Dogs. Games I don't want to finish (maybe try again later): MG Rising (camera sucks and annoying to play), Crysis 3 Remastered and Max Payne 3 (slo-mo very fun, but very repetitive). Best new games I found playing on the Deck, Hellblade by far, FF15, Shapez 2, Ghostrunner 2, Tales of Arise and Tomb Raider.
I have thousands of games and don't finish many a year so I was really searching for help here ;) Ended up with an extra game to finish (never heard of Sayonara before)
I always assume if people have 1000+ games that they like the process of buying something more than actually playing them (or being a collector). Or you got a lot of free games. But around 50% (62/130 games) of my backlog were games that when I tried to play them, I quickly realized that I actually don't want to (especially those free games). So I made steam collections and put them in "finished" and minimized it. It cut my backlog in half within a week! After that I kept trying games that I think I could finish fast. After 5 months I had 40 important games left and needed 2 years to finish them. Now my backlog feels too empty haha.
Keep going, man! Just had a quick look at your channel, and your editing quality and overall production looks like you've been making content for years. I couldn't believe your follower count, you deserve a lot more. Keep putting them out as you are, and I bet you'll take off in no time! Great narration too! Excellent stuff and I hope the algorithm continues to be kind !
I can recommend to start with games you feel you can fisnish the fastest, to make you backlog shrink faster. Half of my backlog I didn't really want to play after trying them out for 20 minutes. So I could cut my backlog in half after 1 week.
i like your taste , sadly i know and own most of the games on your list exept lorelai and the laser eyes, and returnal. i hear mostly good things of them but busy atm with metapor ,ff 16 , and silent hill 2. tnks for the tips and leaving a coment also to push the algorithm. details: darkwood music in octuber hit me and make me close my eyes from a moment the forest sings to me.
Danggg, I def disagree with the Bioshock story. The meta themes of choice and the tackling of flaws in "Objectivism" was very interesting. My only complaint is the painful fetch quest ending really.
This is something I'm still working on. I think the fewer games at once the more likely you are the finish them all but it really depends what sorts of games are in the rotation
bro you serious you don't know why bioshock is held in high regard..... im scared what you would say about mgs2 and nier automota in addition to other profound games
I find it interesting listening to how some people can find the same game a 10/10 and others like a 5/10. He also said Resident evil 4 is overrated and I can agree with that.
i finished 55 games this year and enjoyed all of them. at this pace ill have my backlog finished in 10 years 😭

what's that discord server? I wanna join it too

Nice one. You're doing really great so far and I really enjoy your videos. Can't wait for the next one :)
Ace video! Please carry on with what you’re doing. It’s a treat to listen to you.

@ :D it’s so good
Went to subscribe and was surprised by how underrated this channel is. Great quality stuff.

Another awesome video from you! I'm really glad I found your channel, here's to another year of games
I have thousands of games and don't finish many a year so I was really searching for help here ;) Ended up with an extra game to finish (never heard of Sayonara before)

Loved this video
Glad to see you liked Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. What a game.
I finished 26 games this year which was easily my most ever.. however I still have so many to go
I can recommend to start with games you feel you can fisnish the fastest, to make you backlog shrink faster. Half of my backlog I didn't really want to play after trying them out for 20 minutes. So I could cut my backlog in half after 1 week.
Top quality video
Great video! I'm doing something similar in January. Starting with the "worst" game I tried this year.
Which notebook were you using?
I came here to see if I could find more games but I already played almost all of the ones listed here 😮💨
you pulled me in with celeste in the thumbnail
How I cleared my backlog... My wife wouldn't let me buy anymore 😕
Good strategy, if you buy them later you can get them on a big sale probably :D
i like your taste , sadly i know and own most of the games on your list

the forest sings to me.
3:25 Factorio soundtrack for a factory game - nice!
I'm not sure I can open the template as something I can copy, looks bugged to me? Any one getting the same issue?
Danggg, I def disagree with the Bioshock story. The meta themes of choice and the tackling of flaws in "Objectivism" was very interesting. My only complaint is the painful fetch quest ending really.
Awesome vid. what do you classify as "completed game"? completing the story or going full achievement hunter?
To get the "completed" mark in my list I have to roll the end credits but some games I do a lot more if I'm really feeling it
Man, my average time per game is 21 hours and 11 minutes.
List the games on description
Yeah you are defo part of the minority mate, when it comes to opinion on bioshock
14:53 all good
Is it good to play one game at a time or multiple if so how many ?
This is something I'm still working on. I think the fewer games at once the more likely you are the finish them all but it really depends what sorts of games are in the rotation
W vid
CELESTE
bro you serious you don't know why bioshock is held in high regard..... im scared what you would say about mgs2 and nier automota in addition to other profound games
How kind a person that abandoned Marines 2?
Yeah, shitting on Bioshock yet praising Disco Elysium and The Last of Us is where I cut this off.
@@Inferno60x I lost interest around the same. To each there own I guess.
I find it interesting listening to how some people can find the same game a 10/10 and others like a 5/10. He also said Resident evil 4 is overrated and I can agree with that.
I buy games for fun. Like I like to collect them all. Bye.
