Wait, you forgot to mention Balatro when you were talking about this year's GOTY contenders. It really stands out to me because it is one of the only games nominated for Game of the Year that doesn't have any narrative elements at all, and is there solely on the strength of its deceptively simple yet adictive game loop. It is cool to see a game devoid of all the bells and whistles that we kinda expect of modern video games competing for the top spot against juggernauts with budgets millions of times its size. That said, Metaphor Refantazio is my actual game of the year pick. As a big JRPG fan, it is very exciting to see two nominated this year, and Metaphor in particular delivers just about everything I want from a game like this. All the while expanding on ideas and mechanics of past ATLUS games in ways that are simultaneously familiar yet refreshingly new. Though, it is worth mentioning I was still playing rounds of Balatro between long play sessions of Metaphor.
Balatro amazing on every platform. I am curious about Metaphor. I may give that a try when it goes on sale. I am new to RPGs. Mt favorite was Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth this year.

Fun fact: Dragon age may feel like BG3, because Bioware made the first two Baldur's Gate games in the series. They switched to dragon age, and the series laid dormant until Larian picked it up and did BG3!
The "Bioware formula" of a narrative RPG with romanceable companions each having their own quest lines all surrounding a complex and reactive world has been around since Baldur's Gate released in 1998. I think it's more that Larian wanted BG3 to be that narrative, reactive, and character-driven style of RPG moreso than it being a Baldur's Gate game. For example, Divinity Original Sin 2 by Larian before they made BG3 has a lot of that same feel.
unpopular opinion maybe, but for me personally a dlc winning game of the year would be ridiculous but so will be a remake. i am sorry, but all they had to do was to enhanced it. i am an old lady, played and love the silent hill series but game of the year should be reserve for new games. i am no dev, programmer, story teller or game designer but i think it would be a a shame to undermined the work of people who actually brings something new to the table period.

Events like The Game Awards remind me of that. I don’t even need my pick to win-I just love the celebration of the hobby. Now, I just need to focus on that and stop letting others' opinions sway me. 😅 Great video, by the way! First time watching, and I genuinely enjoyed it.
I'm more of a souls guy, but I really respect TLOU2 in alot of ways. You can literally forget about the story th e characters and just focus on the technical and gameplay aspects and its a masterpiece. Even down to the controls. Like I thought call of duty had good analog aiming mechanics. Now, I appreciate how dark and brutal the story is, but I get the push back. I just don't think all that is a big deal because of how impressive the gameplay and technical aspects of the game is. That said. Baldurs gate 3 is even MORE IMPRESSIVE. THE AMOUNT OF CHOICE IN GAMEPLAY IS RIDICULOUS. It's like turn based deus ex. Just wanted to highlight those two games. Elden ring and sekiro obviously rule.

As someone who has been a Dragon Age fan since 2015, I want to give a bit of a heads up for Veilguard-- it looks pretty but it lacks the depth, conflict and good writing that the previous Dragon Age games had. It's basically an action adventure game masquerading as an RPG/Dragon Age game-- previous choices from other games do not import to Veilguard (save for 3 from DAI), the approval/disapproval system only adds XP to the companions, the combat is more fast paced with limited pausing and little strategy and the writing is incredibly "evil vs good", weirdly modern and soft. It's a shame because Origins, 2 and Inquisition are such solid games in their own ways, but Veilguard fell flat for a looot of people. If you want to play a goody two shoes character in a game with action gameplay and you don't care much for the deep lore, it'll be fun. Otherwise... yeah, needless to say myself and many others are disappointed. And no, it definitely would not have deserved GOTY, and I'm not surprised it only got one nomination. Anyways, sorry for the tirade but wanted to give a disclaimer to any new Dragon Age fans such as yourself ! Feel free to ask questions if you have any. (Also, just discovered you; great video, immediate subscription!!)
I disagree, the game's writing isn't bad, but it is clearly rushed because of the development hell and consant cycling of writers for the game. The highs are higher than the lows are low, so at worst I'd say it feels a little stilted in the beginning and gets better once the writers don't have to do any more exposition. The idea that Veilguard doesn't have "deep lore" is silly when it's probably the deepest in the lore the series has gotten. It just doesn't worry about Southern Thedas, because you aren't there. Dragon age has also always been evil vs. good, you can never be a villain in the Dragon Age games. Sure you can be a dick, or do some very questionable things, but at the end of it all you are still the hero who saves the world. Each game has a reason for why you can be an asshole though, but Veilguard doesn't have a justifiable reason Rook could be like that. If Rook is an asshole, no one would follow them. Also talking about the combat is silly, Action RPGs aren't anything new, and most people do in fact prefer them to real time with pause. Especially comsole players.
@@jossebrodeur6033 couldn’t have said it better myself. The Core of Dragon Age has always been good vs evil. There is no morally gray. You’re a hero saving the world bringing your friends along the way 😂 As far as combat, i prefer it better with the new style (I’ve been a fan for over 15 years) I enjoyed the story. I don’t think it was as good as the previous, but it still is really good imo even tho it did feel rushed. Yea and idk why DA fans are complaining about the Lore when this game has a WHOLE lot of Lore.
The dragon age games have gotten increasingly worse over the years with every installment being less fun than the previous. Sad to say that the franchise is most definitely dead
Unfortunately yes Smash Bros Ultimate should have won It was the most impactful game in 2019, everybody was talking about Sekiro was well crafted, but didn't have as much impact in the industry as Smash Bros Ultiamte or the later Fromsoftware game, Elden Ring
I think story wise RDR2 is better (and that’s saying a lot) but as a complete package GOW 2018 is a bit more airtight than RDR2. RDR2 is way too long, the sidequests can get a bit restrained and tedious, and the combat really drags by the end. All that said, it’s still the best story told in video games, but I see why GOW won.
@@dashman8499 I can see what you mean, but RDR2 is not only the best story told game, it is also the best open world - single player game. As well as the npc dialogues and honor system where it affects your ending. Everything you do in Red Dead Impact what the ending becomes and what your fate is, the same cannot be told for GOW. I would also argue that Arthur Morgan is the better main character, and that Red Dead has more impactful side characters than GOW. When you, collect all of that together. I think that RDR2 was indeed robbed.
@@danbanan6322 In my opinion from an open world single player experience, Elden Ring beats it in every regard, except story. The honor system felt half baked outside of the ending. GOW has alot of great side quests that deepen Kratos and Atreus' relationship, for me, the side quests are alot more fruitful in that game. Arthur Morgan is my favorite video game character of all time. I do prefer RDR2's cjharcters overall, but GOW works better as a complete picture. If I take a step back, I have less issues with GOW than RDR2, even if I love both. I'll be more willing to play GOW again, but I'll be more willing to watch cutscenes from RDR2.

Playing Elden Ring for the first time in 2022 was a stellar experience for me, It was my first soulsborne and I loved it, nothing I have played has ever come close to the experience I felt back then, maybe Death Stranding, but that doesn't really count, does it?
@ you must be pretty unhappy in life, there is a reason the game is so loved and praised by many. You also probably used summons cause you suck at souls games.
@Digger-Nick i played elden ring for the first time this year and I strongly disagree with this. Almost every inch of the map has something to fight, collect, or explore. There are lots of reasons to re-tread old areas. Hidden secrets. Side quests which feel worth your time because they unlock useful weapons or abilities instead of just useless collectibles like a lot of other games. My biggest fear coming into it was that I'd be put off by the difficulty but honestly, once I overcame my initial frustration with it, it became super addictive. This is definitely a minority opinion.
@@Digger-Nick Also your argument about the map being ''lifeless'' makes no sense, since the game is set in a post apocalyptic world, it's meant to be like that, if you want a lively open world play the witcher 3. Plus the game does a good job of rewarding exploration and makes the game very exciting on a first playthrough.
Yeah, overwatch was truly one of THE multiplayer games. Then they did what they did with Overwatch 2. Even when the gameplay isn’t that bad today, they ruined every system and buried themselves.

Elden ring was the first fame ive ever played to NG+ 9 (i think 7 is thr max but i beat it 8 times on my ps4 and then bought it again and beat it on ps5 to prepare for the dlc). It blew my mind how amazing that game was I loved it so much that now im a huge solsborne/ soulslike fanboy. Lies of p, lords of the fallen, demon souls, etc. i try to play souls games whenever i get the chance and all because of elden ring. The open world mechanic is perfect for a souls game. If something is tok hard then id just go try to find new weapons, armor, spells, etc. somewhere else or just find a new place to grind. Its wild that the game made me love the genre so much that i dont mind grinding the same enemies over and over in other souls games now (the exact reason i was initially turned off from them). Once i got a taste of what it feels like tk overcome an area or a boss in souls games, i was hooked. It deserves game of the decade imho (this is coming from someone whos favorite game series is zelda anf still thinks elden ring blows breath and tears out of the water... RUclips algorithm brings me here. I've surprised as a Souls fan seems like the JRPGs like FF7 and Metaphor isnt your cup of tea. Mine is the exact opposite, I am a big fan of JRPGs, I just couldn't get into the grey, dark and drab settings of the souls games and the muted main protagonist, IMO the only time a muted protagonist is done well is in Bioshock 1 as they build it into the main plot twist. Love Sekiro though, and that isn't a silent protagonist
If you like souls games I would highly recommend lies of p. It’s brutal but hands down one of the best souls likes I have ever played. The story, bosses, fight mechanics, weapons, all were done to perfection.
Veilguard is good if you take it for what it is and ignore the Origins glazers. It's by far not a perfect game, and it does have cracks to it, but it's not "The worst of the franchise that's going to kill BioWare" (that's not how subsidiaries work). It's actually really fun gameplay wise, some of the dialogue is cheesy (it's BioWare, cheesy dialogue is part of the deal), and the friggin hair physics man, those are just *chef's kiss*. It's also the most stable of the Dragon Age games. I only crashed once and it was a cache overload because I was playing it all day so it wasn't a fault of the game it was my B.
I remember playing Breath of the WIld, it was my first Zelda, but also the first time I was old enough to understand what I was playing, and oh my god, to this day, it is the only game I can think of that gave me chills and butterflies while playing it, and when I look back. Which is why to me it'll always be superior to TotK imo. I'm still endlessly searching for another game that will give me that sensation again.
I think DLC as GOTY is fine for older games that have been around for a long time. For example, MMORPG expansions are vastly different. So if FFXIV shadowbringers won for example. I would be okay with it as a separate entity than FFXIV.
I feel so sorry for young people who weren't around in the early 00s, because they don't know what the gaming industry can be. Yes it was a fraction the size it was today, but it made the juggernaut companies now run by spreadsheets and stock value what they are today because AAA ment throwing everything at the games to make the best game possible, and with the money you got from that game you made the next one, doing it all over again. Unfortunately, what you need to spend to go from an 8/10 to a 10/10 game you aren't guaranteed to make back, and that's something shareholders don't like, so publicly traded companies no longer try.

You can literally forget about the story th e characters and just focus on the technical and gameplay aspects and its a masterpiece. Even down to the controls. Like I thought call of duty had good analog aiming mechanics.

@@chapus2009 looks pretty but lacks depth is the perfect description for DAV. fun enough to play through but ultimately such a let down for the series
@@Abigaildru Absolutely ! It's still fun to play but a lot of the writing just lands flat for me.

Debatable. Both are amazing. I go back to both equally.
@@joshnizzle Your opinion is valid, but I just can't see both games being equally as good
@@danbanan6322 In my opinion from an open world single player experience, Elden Ring beats it in every regard, except story. The honor system felt half baked outside of the ending.

Stellar how? The game is completely barren and lifeless.

I'd be interested to know what game you felt should have won the award in 2020 since you felt TLoU2 was the wrong choice.
Liked, subscribed. I’ll def be perusing your catalogue
5:16 literally the best transition ever
I'll be the devils advocate, i love elden ring, but bloodborne has my heart
Ah, yes. A proper masochist at heart. I can respect that. I also love ER for a number of reasons but DS1 will always be my true love
18k VIEWS!? that's it? This is a genuinely good video
You should play all the God of War games. They are all really good.
I finally just bought balders gate 3 and im loving it so far
There is absolutely no way you played the entire Witcher 3 and that’s all you had to say.
If you like souls games I would highly recommend lies of p. It’s brutal but hands down one of the best souls likes I have ever played. The story, bosses, fight mechanics, weapons, all were done to perfection.
I’m still pissed that last of us 2 beat Ghost of Tsushima
@@FreakiestLad same. Ghost of Tsushima is like mixing RDR2 with the assassin's creed we always wanted
@@FreakiestLad Ghost is boring af, super repetitive as well💀
@@obadiahstane2057last of us is woke bullshit, id vote anything above that trash
Returnal was insane, rogue like shooter. Only gave I've ever got platinum. So underrated most have never played it.
Worth a try if you get a chance.
I'm still endlessly searching for another game that will give me that sensation again.
i just hate why Black Mith Wukong and Astro bot release at the same year, because both of this game deserve to get GOTY
God of War was great, but Red Dead Redemption 2 is my favorite game of all time
To be honest, if any other game released in 2021, it would've won GOTY!
I think DLC as GOTY is fine for older games that have been around for a long time. For example, MMORPG expansions are vastly different. So if FFXIV shadowbringers won for example. I would be okay with it as a separate entity than FFXIV.
honestly great video 🙌
Playing every game of the year games and ending each one is not the same!
Fun fact: the last time a game rated E10+ won was 2017.
An E rated game has never won.
