  • We've been running the Suzuki DF25A 25 hp outboard engine for three years, so it's time to take a look at what our long term test has taught us. Used on a 16 foot fiberglass boat - which is quite large and heavy for this engine - it's been awesome. Performance and fuel economy are excellent and it starts on the first tug. Tune in, to see our review.

    Thanks for the update on the shallow tilt feature, I've run the engine on the boat and I'm still breaking it in. The manual says to change the oil at 20 hrs, what they don't show you is where the drain plug is located. I did find a knob on the lower left side of the lower unit similar to the yellow fill cap only this ones black and can be removed by hand, is that the drain plug? and if so looks like oil will dribble all over the lower unit...is that the case? Thanks so much!

      I'm not familiar with that boat in specific so take what I say with a grain of salt, but if the weight and length is right according to Google (no more than 16' and under 500 pounds) it should be a great match. As you see in the video, the 16 we have it on is fiberglass and is quite heavy, so your performance should be a good measure better than ours. Good luck and enjoy!

      Can't say for sure because my search on the same came up blank - it's an oddball boat. It's called a "Flounder 16" and was built in 86 if I remember right, but when I traced down the VIN number it was in use by a different builder who said he never heard of it (which is not supposed to happen, those numbers aren't re-used). Best guess is its right in the 700 - 900 lbs range. Probably weighed less when built, but wood in the deck retains moisture (lots).

    Hi Rudow, Have you done a comparison between a Suzuki 25 or 30 and the 20hp? I have a 13' fiberglass Livingston (catamaran) 350 pound hull that is rated for a 40hp. I am tying to decide whether to outfit it with a Suzuki 20 hp @ 96 pounds or would I be disappointed and wish I had the power of a 30HP @ 163 pounds. The 20 fits my transom and the frame size changes with the 25 and 30 requiring me to adapt a jack plate to the transom for the larger frame. I understand the 25hp and 30hp are identical as they just adjust the electronic fuel injection for the increase in HP in the 30. Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated. Tim

    • @lennyrudow7519
      @lennyrudow7519 4 года назад

      Hey Tim - we haven't run them on identical transoms, however, it really depends on your expectations. The 20 should have zero problem with getting 350 pound hull on plane but the 25/30 will certainly get you more speed. We're not going to make any guesses about exact performances, especially with a Livingston since that's an unusual hullform. However, we've done jack plates on small outboards and note that it can cause a lot of issues (tilt, tiller position) with tiller-steer models. If you have forward controls that's one thing, but if you use tiller steer we'd be wary of the rigging issues.

    • @tw6955
      @tw6955 4 года назад +1

      @@lennyrudow7519 Thanks for the feed back Lenny. I have an adjustable (vertical 4") jack plate mocked up in cardboard that I plan to fabricate out of aluminum that I believe will work well with a Livingston. I believe I have addressed the tiller clearance issues one would anticipate with the peculiarities with this hull design. I would send you a picture as it is interesting but I cannot figure out how to attach a picture to this format. The issue people run into with this catamaran hull is the turbulence created by the sponsons and finding the sweet spot for the engine cavitation plate.There is a keel that runs down the center of the tunnel hull which I am sure was developed to provide more laminar flow to resolve cavitation problems created by the sponsons on cat boats. Ideally, I need to set the cavitation plate even with the bottom of the keel but there may be some fine tuning depending on the loading in the boat and sea conditions. Others here have wrestled with this setting. Our water access is the Sailish Sea, Straits of Juan de Fuca, and the Pacific Ocean so the sea and weather conditions are continuously changing. I will utilize a 20" long shaft as when we get into a 4' to 6' swell off shore there is a tendency to have engine ride too high when cresting swells and cavitation results, so the engine needs to be set deeper for those conditions.Yep, there are a bunch of folks here who run skiffs off shore, just choose your weather carefully. It is about 12 to 15 miles across the straits to Canada and the sea state in the straits often mimics the ocean. The catamaran hull with 26" high sides lends itself to incredible stability in these sea states. There are periods of time especially in the summer when high pressure sets in and this area is like a lake. Go at first light as the wind usually comes up after lunch and things change quickly. So, recognizing all the variances, it is probably a good idea to have more HP to get home safely with some extra speed as running out 10 to 15 miles is common. I have wrestled with this decision for awhile so thanks for your input as the more I research it I think that the 20 is too small for my application.Let me know if there is a way to send you a picture if you are interested. BTW, Bob Livingston built approximately 75K Livingstons in Arlington Washington during the 80's and 90's so there are all types in various conditions around here. Perfect day skiff for this area. Thanks, Tim

    • @FishTalkMagazine
      @FishTalkMagazine  2 года назад

      The one seen here is a short-shaft, but we'd 1000% recommend going by the book. It isn't safe to compare with a 5-hp, especially because through the years many of the manufacturers have made 5s and 9.9s with extra-long shafts intended for use on small sailboats. 508mm matches up exactly with what we're seeing (20 inches) for the recommended transom height, so that certainly would seem to be the right measurement. Good luck & enjoy your rig!!

      The published weight for that model is 1100 pounds as opposed to 900 for the skiff here, but the skiff had put on some water-weight (the deck was not in great shape when this video was shot) and had a lot of gear on it. How wood it do with a 18 foot john

    • @FishTalkMagazine
      @FishTalkMagazine  4 года назад

      Hey Robbie - 18' is really pushing it (pretty big for a 25) if the boat has much of a load. A light aluminum jon with a couple people on board should plane out and get speeds in the teens, at best. The 16' this is on is fiberglass and heavily-built, and runs at around 18 mph depending on the conditions with one people and gear aboard, more like 15 or 16 with two or three people. Aluminum boats are usually a good bit lighter than fiberglass but if your jon has decking and is rigged with a lot of gear, or if you commonly have several people aboard, I'd suspect there's a danger it may not get onto plane.

      Hey Shingnosis - that's a very heavy 16-footer with just 25 horses, and the stock three-blade had trouble getting it on plane with more than one person aboard. (I didn't want to put a larger engine on the boat since my kids, all teenagers at the time, used it whenever they wanted and I didn't want them blasting around the river at fast speeds). I actually tried 4 or 5 different props of varying types before settling on that one, which spins in the recommended WOT range and planes the boat with just about any load. While it's true four blades do add drag (not resistance) as compared to three and I lost a mph or two at top-end, overall it performs much better and still falls within the manufacturer's specs. On many repowered/unusual set-ups the stock prop is less than ideal; here's a good article that details choosing the best prop for a rig: www.bdoutdoors.com/choosing-propeller-fishing-boat/
