    In case you haven't noticed the TM-1 comes with K67 type center terminated capsule and NT-1 with Ck12 type edge terminated capsule, those are different animals altogether. K67 type capsules have treble boost which has to be fixed by built-in EQ. So TM-1 is not exactly an NT-1 copy, though they look similar, they both have U87 type basket, add Tannoy TM1 to the same genre. In addition to frequency plots it would be very useful to see the waterfalls as they can show the real tonal balance much better.

  • @DMKahn
    @DMKahn 3 года назад +51

    Bandrew, have you ever thought of plotting frequency graphs of the mics? It wouldn't have to be 100% scientific. If you used the same frequency sweep and had the mics more or less in the same spot for the test, you could easily show a visual representation of the frequencies. What we hear is most important for sure, but I think a visual would be awesome!

    • @reggiep75
      @reggiep75 3 года назад +7

      This!!! I've waited forever for someone else to raise this too, I just gave up. A sweep from inside the 'Box of Doom' or whatever it's called would be good as a visual representation of audio data is good!

    As far as budget mics go it sounds good and that low self-noise is appealing. Nothing a little EQ & compression couldn't fix. Seems like a good value package with that shockmount and filter. For those that care, it's a pretty photogenic package for streaming / visual podcasting. It doesn't sound like a NT1a but it looks the part. One of the better looking budget kits.

    Y'all are dogging on the TM1 for good reason I know; but forget that this is with no processing barring like one thing I believe he mentioned. Some EQing would make the highs less harsh and a compressor would smoothen things out and get it sounding nice and clean. Def worth picking up for the price. I just bought mine yesterday.

    I'm not sure that the world really needs another "budget" microphone with an overly hyped top end.

  • @BruceLeedar
    @BruceLeedar 3 года назад +38

    While it does seem very 'inspired' by the NT1-A, the TM1 name is thanks to Tannoy ('Tannoy Microphone 1'), a brand that Behringer bought recently and re-labeled as their own. It's relatively easy to copy the look and frequency response of the NT1-A (to a degree of accuracy), but that low self-noise seems trickier. I'm no microphone designer, maybe it's easier than it appears and Rode also trades off some other quality to get their low noise. Too bad nobody with the right testing setup would ever verify that spec sheet figure for such a budget mic.

      @@DMKahn Nah, the U87Ai is an inferior version of the old U87. Ai version just makes everyone on it sound like they have a cold. The TLM 103 has a completely different sound signature from the U87 since it's a transformerless mic, whereas the U87 has a transformer, and is a much more mid-forward sound (boosted mids). If you took the U87 and scooped out the mids, you'd have a TLM 103 with extra polar patterns and more self-noise.

    Hey podcastage! Universal Audio just dropped their Volt line budget audio interfaces. Im so curious about the preamp noise test results for the 76's series. Could you do a review on it?

    the new NT1 sounds more warm, but not worth the price when this mic does about the same and sounds eerily similar to the older NT1-A.

  • @24hrMusic
    @24hrMusic 3 года назад

    For those who care... The NT1a uses surface mount technology on the circuit board inside the mic. The TM1 does not. When you look at the frequency graphs of each, there seems to be a high end boost on the TM1. Generally, the circuit on the TM1 seems to give some good freq numbers and low self noise, but to my ears there is a harshness in the higher frequencies. But not a bad bang for the buck.

    • @24hrMusic
      @24hrMusic 3 года назад

      @Stefano Pavone Generally it is less prone to vibration issues and is quieter (less RF interference). It also tends to be a cleaner, smaller boards with faster circuits. And, in my opinion... The engineering on SMT boards tends to be a bit better (really it's just my opinion though).

    • @arbitermatt
      @arbitermatt 3 года назад +1

      All of these things are copies of other designs though...Microphones, pedals, amplifiers etc. They're old circuits and concepts.

    • @mostlysilentprotagonist
      @mostlysilentprotagonist 3 года назад

      @@arbitermatt Oh, I understand that and I have no problem if a mic uses similar tech that another one does. It's the unnecessary provocation that Behringer tends to have when doing so, by calling their mics very similar names and using nearly identical exterior designs as the original mic e.g. Behringer's BX2020 vs. AT2020, Behringer Bigfoot vs. Blue Yeti, and Behringer's TM1 vs. NT1. Again, I'm not against a company coming up with a cheaper version of a mic. In fact, I love it when a company tries to take a mic and make it cheaper without compromising the quality. It induces the competition to constantly improve which in turn means better mics at better prices down the road. I just don't like the provocative naming and exterior design.

    Behringer copies all the concepts of NT1a but doesn't copy the sound.
    But I like the sound of TM1 if cut some high boosted sound. (It's really over boosted sound in the high frequency.)

  • @agambhasin
    @agambhasin 3 года назад +6

    So they copied another microphone, wow. In terms of sound i believe its copying the harsher high end on the NT1A and adding some more😂,
    -in the plosives department it did a pretty decent job i have to give it that,
    -the shock mount did a fairly nice job too, no resonance whatsoever, build seems to be fine as well
    - definitely sounded better than the neewer, sounded slightly meatier than the 2020, the P120 was surprisingly better tho, the 240 throws it straight out of the park no issues, the NT1A however did sound better when compared to this guy, the NT1 definitely sounds way better than the TM1, lauten audio definitely sounded very nice, but i think its a kinda ovekill comparison & so is the U87, definitely sounding better than the TM1
    - It sounded alright on the electric guitar, but definitely better on the acoustic bcz it has the shine to it, for singing its definitely pretty alright, for spoken word, i think this can work for people podcasting in well treated spaces, also the noise spec is impressive at this price point, so for someone who maybe needs a nice condenser microphone or they want to try something under 150 that sounds reasonable after certain post processing, sure, it is an option, all in all except the crap practices, its a decent product, will I buy it? Ummmm..thinking about that. You asked which one of the mics this was compared to was my favourite, my vote goes to the NT1.
    Thankyou so much for your efforts as always brother, much love!
