Just saw this comment and panicked thinking Mike stopped doing this 10 months ago. False alarm 😅. I'm sad to know RUclips experienced a time without Mike Delgaudio. Good thing I wasn't around then.
Super useful video, thanks a lot !!! I have the NT2A years ago and never touched the -80, -40, etc...so, now I understood the differences very well :) greetings from Spain
I will be setting up my studio for podcasting once I'm home from working/travelling abroad later this year. This video has been super helpful. Thank you for the great tips and advice!
I think I get why he likes the CAD e100s more - it sounds more "breathy" - like more air comes through, and perhaps that's more natural to his voice, depending on what it sounds like to an average human ear. And I think it sounds more pleasant, like he thinks, because it's more breathy. It sounds great to me for reading books, especially, and for a calm, low, warm voice for a character for voice acting (that his voice is like). The NT2a sounds more condenced and less "wide" with the sound.
Thee ole You of Tube suggested this video and it’s good timing as I was comparing the NT1/NT1a to similar mics. So with that handy button. Sounds like the NT2a might be better if your voicing characters that might be yelling at times.
Hey mike! Relatively new booth junky here! I've been working on a simple active ribbon mic for the past few months and I want to know your opinion on figure 8's for voice-over. I know it can be harder to cancel out bg-noise and the such but it's NTR quality at ~1/8th the cost, not to mention I'm also going to be using it for recording band sessions so the pattern comes in handy Do you think I can stick to the simple figure-8 or should I invest some time making it cardioid?
You have a Sub good sir, simply the best on this subject on RUclips in my Humble Opinion...just starting to research to get my first VO set-up together to delve into the Hobbie. :)
e100s clearly sounds better, I noticed it right off the bat, didn't have to even think about it.... it sounds like it demands and takes up more "space"
Could you do a review on something a little wierd; Microphones that are on headphones. I have one I am not very experienced when it comes to audio. I would love to see your opinion on one.
I am looking to buy either one of these microphones for me to sing. I enjoy singing on smule, that is what I will be using it for. I have a soprano voice. What would be best for my voice please. Any advice I would really appreciate xx
The thing is i want to get it myself in the near future and it would be cool to see "alternatives" to the Rode Procaster, by sound and/or build. Thanks!
Hi there Mike, just a quick question, as a blind user of the NT1A, which for me is a massive upgrade from the rather lesser Sanyo microphone that I have been using for all kinds of things, could you let me know what the model of shock mount is that is provided with the NT1A? I need to replace the bungees on it. Thanks.
Sorry for being somewhat biased but all of the podcasters out there including yourself that are testing microphones are a waste of time to someone like myself who need to hear instruments, percussion and orchestra being recorded and tested. Total waste of time trying to makes sense of people that only get to speak in a podcast when testing microphones. It is hard work trying to find any reviews that are from musicians and not from podcaster's that only need a microphone that suits their talking voice.
I have a discontinued Monoprice 600850 lollipop condenser mic that has all the same features of the 2A and I love the versatility. Have you ever heard of it, Mike?
Great comparison of the 3 mikes. Personally, I thought the non-Rode mic sounded a bit covered in tone, like the limited treble frequencies coming from a portable cassette player’s speaker. The NT2-A seemed to have more clarity.
NT1A sounds a bit harsh to me. It has too much low end IMO making it sound a bit boomy but the high end is also a little to thin and harsh giving the mic a very uneven tone to my ears. The E100s sounds better than the NT2A to me.
NT2A is better for Vocals i.e. for singing and voice over. NT1a is better for instruments recordings. That is what co. says about theses mics. NT2a is also not too bad for instruments.
Ryan Wilson you're absolutely right! When Peter Freedman took over his dad's business to modify cheap mics into a better mics, they started selling like "rats up a drain pipe" which lead to Rodent-1, and then official the Rode NT1.
Hey Haircut! I can imagine where the NT 2A is a good choice. I think there are way more whistles and bells that a typical VO might need. I'm a bit partial towards the e100s, but the NT did have a fairly smooth sound (compared to the 1A). Is it a 'match' for the CAD? Depends upon who is using it.
The Nt 2A sounds flatter than the others. A more "grown up" sounding microphone in my opinion. What I mean by that is that kids these days usually enjoy their EQ like a smiley face, and by having a flatter sound signature, there's more you can do than just please those who want it to sound good from the box. The CAD on the other hand is more of a specialist item in my book. You don't get it to sound flat, you get it because it sounds like an E100s and that's the sound you're after. The NT 2A, I can imagine you can have a bit more say in what you want it to sound like in post.
nt1a, like you said, to much eq'ed. the lows are too prezent along with the highs, compared to nt2a, which is more flat. But i don't have found yet what to choose between nt2a and the e100s. E100s sounds that the highs are just a bit more prezent than the nt2a. Thanks for the review
i like the nt2a just because of the extra capabilities. Like for instance if you do ever decide to do a podcast and interview people or even in a duet mode. Just a few extra features that actually make it better
Nt2a almost sounds as if its putting out a "mastered" audio with it being crisp, sharper and giving more of a crushed sound while still sounding warm. The NT1a is slightly quieter but very warm imo. Both are very excellent mic's, none is better than the other. Depends on your own voice and preference. Great channel.
My Analysis of all 3: NT 1A is too sparkly and piercing. NT 2A more to my style of sound. Very smooth and similar to the warm sound of a U87 that sounds almost like nothing special before you realize how moldable it is because of it’s smoothness during mixing. Btw...CAD E100 and E100S are my favorite mics ever!! I call them “unicorn mics” because they are somehow affordable and yet really unique and amazing sounding on a level so high that they can go up against anything in the industry and hold they’re own. They are so warm and hot-buttery smooth, but here...I definitely prefer the NT2A over the E100s....but an original, vintage E100 with the gold grill is a different story! The NT2A smooths out Esses before even processing/mixing...but e100S is just as good and is so moldable and beautiful that who gives a damn about doing some quick, basic EQing to it if needed?
Hey, Mike! Do you have any experience using the NTG2 for vocals? It looks good for field recording, but I would love your opinion on it for vo work, thanks!
Your voice is much more beautiful with Rode NT2a compared to other microphones! His voice was brilliant but it was also warm with beautiful bass. For me the Rode NT2a has a quality above its price. I saw some videos that he is compared to the renowned Neumann, and fortunately the Rode NT2a did very well! That was one of the reasons I was convinced to buy it. Thanks for your videos and have a lot of success :)
I like more the sound of the Rode NT2A. The e100s sounds more eq but flatter but I dislike that microphone because of the self noise problems. It should be interesting to listen a shoot out Rode NTK (tube condenser) vs MKH 416. They could sound similar.
Shi Womino yes It does not 'cause It was repair time ago. Mike did a video last year when He explains the self noise of his microphone. Someone else had the samen problems. You can read buyers comments and you will note that they've had self noise problems with the E100s. I think, It's a lottery to get a good one.
I love the CAD E100S, I think that could be the perfect microphone for me. I am going to buy a new microphone this month and I am looking seriously to the TLM 103, because I am afradi of self noise problemas that could have the E100S and I am not living in the US, so If I buy one with self noise problems, I could lost my money. It´s a lottery to get a clean one.
Danny the spanish Voice Over that is a clear reason to consider. Getting service for mics made elsewhere with no local representation can be a gamble. If Iight suggest finding a local reseller to pick up the CAD brand, that might be helpful. OR, making your sale through a US company that agrees to deal with any issues of you purchase from them.
Mike, hi! I definetely would like to hear your thoughts about these mics someday: 1) Oktava MK-105; 2) Oktava MK-519 (both of these mics made in Tula, Russia); 3) ISK-bm800 (yes, it's chinese mic; yes, it's cheap enough, but I'm really interested in your professional opinion about this mic) Best regards, Damir!
Great video. For straight dialogue there's not really enough in it to justify the 2A. That's where the 1A scores well, as a straight no nonsense cardioid with a nice upper presence that doesn't cost too much. However, you'd be totally justified for spending the extra on the 2A if you've got more uses beyond a straight cardioid dialogue/vocal mic and could do with multi patterns, padding etc. for instrument work etc. Cheers, Dave.
Hey, man, love your videos. I have a huge issue, and I really hope you will help me. I don't know if you have an available email address, so I'm posting here. I have a Rode NT1a, a Presonus Audiobox USB, and I use Audacity to record. For some reason, whether it's the placement of my mic, or the settings on any of the other equipment I mentioned, I can't seem to get my mic to sound clean and loud enough from the same distance you are from your mic. I would be so thankful if you tell me what settings I could try.
I don't like the NT1A on your voice either Mike. The NT2A is decent though. As for the "Rode" sound, I get the impression that most of their mics are of the brighter, presence boosted variety. The odd duck there being the NTR, which still seems to be brighter than typical for a ribbon.
no way, new rode is much much smoother. also the ntk wasn't too bright. They just so happen to use the same capsule for some models. ntr is not nearly to bright.
Wow, I thought the NT-2A sounded great until you plugged in the e100s. In my opinion the e100s almost made the NT-2a sound like a dead mic. I think the NT-2a still sounds good, but especially for your vocal quality, the e100s blew out of the water in my ears.
Kryptfire Gaming I went from the NT1-A to the e100s and it went from something sharp edges and almost irritating to butter. I'm hard pressed at times which to use for a job between the CAD and the 416. The Rode is now just my talk-back mic or a mic I use for female VO's at my studio.
I recently picked up an sE Electronics T2. I had such a hard time deciding between that and the E100s. If I ever get a backup mic at some point, it's definitely that one. The NT1-A just doesn't suit my voice well at all.
Mike, Have you ever used a Neumann U87i? I'm curious how it compares to newer mics. I used one when they first came out in 1969 and thought it was great. Ralph Gould
I hope you see this comment. So I currently have a microphone the samson c01u pro that i use to make youtube videos. But The fan in my room is super loud so I need to do a bit of noise reduction on audacity. But when I do it it makes the voice sound a bit echoy. Like there's this mechanical sound to my voice that I don't know how to fix. Plus I live next to a busy street. And it is really hot over here in Bangladesh. So turning the fan off in a room without ventilation if feels like I'm being cooked alive at over 100°f Plus the added heat from my pc. So I'm thinking of getting a Shure SM58 cause from what I've seen it's really good at not being a d*ck when there's a lot of noise. But should I get an SM58? Or do you recommend something else? Since me and a friend of mine are going to be recording together Using my condenser is a bit of a problem. Cause we would be sitting at a slight distance so it would sound weird. Plus doing that noise reduction really messes with the voice then. So I'm wondering what I should do. Cause we'd be getting an SM58 each. Would that be a good mic for us? Or do we want something different? My channel is real small and if youtube doesn't workout I don't wanna feel like I spent a shit ton of money for no reason. and from what I've seen the SM58 is on the cheaper side. But then when I go to buy it there are a lot of counterfeit mics. It took me a while to find the real deal. So do you have any recommendation? It would really help us out.
Interesting question. Should a podcaster use a USB mixer for voiceover work, or is it better to run it flat through a straight USB interface and fix in post process? The added noise is my concern.
i‘m an musician and i own the nt2a and the heights are waaaaay to strong, they destroy the entire mix and if you de-ess them it sounds muddy. But if you have a method to fix that, the mic sounds f*cking crisp and awesome, but the depths aren‘t that present so the vocal is thin in the most cases (i recorded 3 different male artists inclueded me) (sorry for my bad english but hopefully the comment can help someone, i wish i‘ve bought another mic because the heights destroy the mix...) But just because i‘ve bad experiences it doesn‘t mean it‘s the case for you so, just try it, the sound is amazing besides of the strong heights and the thin depths!
May ask you a question? About the sensitivity in the background, compared to Samson C03 and Rode NT2A. Which one is more Sensitive. I am using the Samson C03, and now I want to upgrade to Rode NT2A but I don't have a good treatment room. I love Rode but I afraid that Rode is so Sensitivity more than Samson C03. I am a voiceover. I know that the price of them so different, So I just want to ask about the sensittivity Could you please give me an advice? Thank you so much!!!
Get NT1. Its neutral without higher boost and all that stuff. If you want that, it always can be adjusted with a simple equaliser. What you need is a decent neutral fuller sound without any boost ups on certain frequencies.
If people want an NT-2A...get a mic that Rode makes that sounds the same/similar without the button features. Instantly cheaper and no need for the settings. Sometimes I EQ subtly with a mixer while recording or...you know...you’ll be freaking mixing anyway! It’s worth paying less if you can.
The CAD e100S sounds much better, IMO. But because there are so many self-noise issues I’m reading about online... ...unless CAD sent me one directly... ......there is no way in the world I’d ever purchase one.
NT1A is brighter with the potential to sound harsh. NT2A is more balanced with the potential to sound flat. I think people pay more for the NT2A’s extra features and consistency. As a singer, it is more preferred to have a more balanced and flat sound so that you can compress and EQ for color in processing.
For sure NT2A sounds better compared with the NT1. The CAD e100s instead gives more low compared with NT2A. In Europe the price for the Cad is around 500eu, while the NT2A is 240eu. So the choice is easy ... NT2A ;-)
Booth Junky I have the NT1 and NT1-a I use both on instruments and the NT1 also on some Vocals, both mics are extremely useful but both are totally superseded when I plug in and switch on my RODE K2 it's warmer it's cleaner it's every bit as good as the Neumann u87 and in my opinion far better than the TLM103 of which I have owned and gave away to a friend in New Jersey who was recording vocals and acoustic guitar for an up coming album release. So after that waffle "GET A K2 You'll Never Regret It"
Hello Mike Booth ;) I love your videos and think it's too bad it's so far between us, (I live in Sweden) or I've sent you a bunch of microphones for testing and comparison. Continue with these entertaining and information-rich videos. Wishing you all the best and having a nice weekend Mike! SINCERELY Tommy F Sweden
Terrible t'sss and s'sss... Don't understand the hype about the rodes... Hate my Rode LOL... Can you please make a video about good mic options that wouldn't cost my left eye please? lol...
D C Why you should? Software Compression is enough, and he already has a Preamp in his Audio Interface, make sure and regoogle what really counts as a Preamp.
I’m actually hearing more similarities between the Cad and the NT2a which might be what causes you to hear those canceled frequencies. I’m sure you heard this when you listened back. I know my comment is very late here.
is hard to make the difference. but the the CAD i feel it more natural but you also have a cool wave voice but you can make many wave patterns. but still hard to make a difference.
We miss you Mike. Come back.
His voice makes me want to fall asleep i don’t know why 😂😂
Yep, the pad is for recording amplified sources.
Great video. What I've got to find now is an NT1 vs NT2a comparison.
WOW GREAT JOB EXPLAINING THE DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!
That e100s sounds better (to me) than the other 2
3 Mikes in the booth 🤣 Mike, Mike‘s Mike and a Mike that is not Mike‘s Mike 🤪
Thank you for your great explainations
Thanks Alot.
Hey mike! Relatively new booth junky here!
I've been working on a simple active ribbon mic for the past few months and I want to know your opinion on figure 8's for voice-over. I know it can be harder to cancel out bg-noise and the such but it's NTR quality at ~1/8th the cost, not to mention I'm also going to be using it for recording band sessions so the pattern comes in handy
Do you think I can stick to the simple figure-8 or should I invest some time making it cardioid?
You have a Sub good sir, simply the best on this subject on RUclips in my Humble Opinion...just starting to research to get my first VO set-up together to delve into the Hobbie. :)
There's something different in the upper mids.. can barely tell them apart tho.
Nice comparison.
Thank you bro you helped me a lot. Nice Video!
Great video man ! Thanks!
Yo Mike!
Greav video!
If you could please review the AKG C-214 it would help a lot!! wonder how it will stand up against the CAD e100s :D
e100s clearly sounds better, I noticed it right off the bat, didn't have to even think about it.... it sounds like it demands and takes up more "space"
wonder how the 2a compares to the rode nt1

Hey, would be cool to see you compare the Rode Procaster to another dynamic mic!
Thanks!
Arnold S +1 please
The thing is i want to get it myself in the near future and it would be cool to see "alternatives" to the Rode Procaster, by sound and/or build.
Thanks!
+1
Rode Procaster vs Shure SM7B
Sune Gasberg
Or The Audio Technica BP 40
Love both of these microphones! Which would be better for ASMR?
Hi there Mike, just a quick question, as a blind user of the NT1A, which for me is a massive upgrade from the rather lesser Sanyo microphone that I have been using for all kinds of things, could you let me know what the model of shock mount is that is provided with the NT1A? Hi Kulvinder. It's the NTSM6
I hope you managed to fix it!
@@The.Dulcet.Toned.Scotsman hi Chris, I did manage to fix it.
Thanks ever so much.
CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A CHANNEL WERE YOU READ SOMETHING WITH YOUR VOICE ? THANKS
I dont hear any diference between the two of them
The self-noise demonstration is very disappointingly missing.
Sorry for being somewhat biased but all of the podcasters out there including yourself that are testing microphones are a waste of time to someone like myself who need to hear instruments, percussion and orchestra being recorded and tested. Did you quit youtube?
Pl. ke short videos.
Bro I can't hear any difference 😂
Not much difference
NT-2A sounds best overall to my ears! Thanks
To me both mics are the same
Yes....new ears....
Nt2a sounds smoother then the nt1a
It is but considering the price... Uhm, wont matter that much.
Didn't know Mark Hamill has a RUclips channel xD
Your name has mic and audio in it.

NT2A is better for Vocals i.e. for singing and voice over. NT1a is better for instruments recordings. That is what co. says about theses mics. NT2a is also not too bad for instruments.
I use the Rode NT 1 with the Rode AI 1 interface. Just wanted to see your opinions.
How do you feel about your NT1 vs the NT2A for a similarly gravelly Male voice?
Am I the only one that has to read these mics as "Rodent"? My brain never lets me read it correctly lol.
Ryan Wilson you're absolutely right! When Peter Freedman took over his dad's business to modify cheap mics into a better mics, they started selling like "rats up a drain pipe" which lead to Rodent-1, and then official the Rode NT1.
I’ve owned one for over 20 years and never made that connection! Haha well played
you sound like Jerry from Rick and Morty
Omg he does! Haha!
I love the NT1A - but have to agree about the top end being a bit too hot !
NT1a sounds warmer for me.

Have you seen the CAD's frequency response chart? It's one of the flattest graphs you'll ever see on a mic. Your ears are wrong.
nt1a, like you said, to much eq'ed. the lows are too prezent along with the highs, compared to nt2a, which is more flat.
IMO, I'd recommend Rode NT's for women vocals. Sounds about right in that range.
whats the mic for mans ?
idunno mon*
@idunno mins
moans? XD
NT2-a sounds more refined and professional but I like the sound of the NT1-a more
NT2 SOUNDS MASTERED AND CLEAN
Nt2a almost sounds as if its putting out a "mastered" audio with it being crisp, sharper and giving more of a crushed sound while still sounding warm. The NT1a is slightly quieter but very warm imo. Both are very excellent mic's, none is better than the other. Depends on your own voice and preference.
Great channel.
I found your channel just for simple pop filter comparisons, but I ended up watching the rest just for your voice - so relaxing!

There is no company taht sells the CAD here. So, I am considering to buy a neuman or maybe the Shure KSM32. One of these mics will be fine for me.
I like the clarity of the NT2A on your voice although the CAD is a little warmer

Did you have to send the NT1 back to Rode? If not, why not test the NT2A against the NT1, which you (and most others) like better?
I will choose the NT-2A ..
BEST INTRO EVER

As for the "Rode" sound, I get the impression that most of their mics are of the brighter, presence boosted variety. The odd duck there being the NTR, which still seems to be brighter than typical for a ribbon.
no way, new rode is much much smoother. also the ntk wasn't too bright. They just so happen to use the same capsule for some models. ntr is not nearly to bright.
John Yang by no means is the NTR bright, just brighter than your average ribbon.
I like my NT2A. Sounds great! Like to use omni setting to record drums helps get the ambience of the room.
Better than a Rode NT1?
CAD e100 makes voice more engaging and more similar to radio station announcer's voice . Rode looks more dull comparedto it.
hey cool test :) you sound like the radio guy from gta vice city ;D
markus Bank omg yes
Mike,
Have you ever used a Neumann U87i? I'm curious how it compares to newer mics. I used one when they first came out in 1969 and thought it was great.

The CAD E100S is now $800. I blame Mike... :)
i‘m an musician and i own the nt2a and the heights are waaaaay to strong, they destroy the entire mix and if you de-ess them it sounds muddy.
Thank u bro
For work I feel like the NT2 would be better just because of the extra options
Another Booth Junkie-certified video to cheer up your day : )
Looking for mics.. 4th video I’ve watched and it just got good, just realized you were switching mic audio as you talk hence the names popping up 😆
Omg you sound so much like Markiplier
Which is better NT!-A or NT2-A???
Conclusion: shutup and just buy cad100s
May ask you a question?
About the sensitivity in the background, compared to Samson C03 and Rode NT2A. Which one is more Sensitive.
I am using the Samson C03, and now I want to upgrade to Rode NT2A but I don't have a good treatment room.
I love Rode but I afraid that Rode is so Sensitivity more than Samson C03. I am a voiceover. I know that the price of them so different, So I just want to ask about the sensittivity
Could you please give me an advice?
Thank you so much!!!
Get NT1. Its neutral without higher boost and all that stuff. If you want that, it always can be adjusted with a simple equaliser. What you need is a decent neutral fuller sound without any boost ups on certain frequencies.
If people want an NT-2A...get a mic that Rode makes that sounds the same/similar without the button features. Instantly cheaper and no need for the settings. Sometimes I EQ subtly with a mixer while recording or...you know...you’ll be freaking mixing anyway! It’s worth paying less if you can.
that e100s ! amazing!
The CAD e100S sounds much better, IMO. But because there are so many self-noise issues I’m reading about online...
...unless CAD sent me one directly...
......there is no way in the world I’d ever purchase one.
Do you boost these at all in post or is it all the preamp?

So after that waffle "GET A K2 You'll Never Regret It"
Hello Mike Booth ;)
I love your videos and think it's too bad it's so far between us, (I live in Sweden) or I've sent you a bunch of microphones for testing and comparison.
Continue with these entertaining and information-rich videos.
Wishing you all the best and having a nice weekend Mike!

Nice video however I will have to disagree the Nt1 is not a bright mike the Nt1A is but not the Nt1...
I cant keep attention listening to mortys father
Hey I'm getting a mxl 770 as my first proper studio microphone. Any thoughts on it?
Terrible t'sss and s'sss...
Don't understand the hype about the rodes...
Hate my Rode LOL...
Can you please make a video about good mic options that wouldn't cost my left eye please?
lol...
Kemist do you have a pre amp and compresser before it hits the daw?
D C Why you should? Software Compression is enough, and he already has a Preamp in his Audio Interface, make sure and regoogle what really counts as a Preamp.
I’m actually hearing more similarities between the Cad and the NT2a which might be what causes you to hear those canceled frequencies.
I’m sure you heard this when you listened back. I know my comment is very late here.
is hard to make the difference. but the the CAD i feel it more natural but you also have a cool wave voice but you can make many wave patterns. but still hard to make a difference.
