RODE NT1-A Condenser Microphone Review / Test

- Опубликовано: 14 июл 2024
- Today, I have the RØDE NT1-A in the Audio Hotline Studio! I am just going to come out and say it... The RØDE NT1-A and I have been through a lot of good times together. I am a big fan of this microphone, especially for the price-point that it sits within and the quality it has. This mic may not be for everyone since it isn't a flat mic, but the sound this mic has right out the gate is quite good, and is a pretty good option for people that don't want to do much EQing in post. Since Rode made this frequency polar pattern pretty deliberately sound a certain way, it may not fit everyones voice, but it is for you to decide if it will work FOR YOU!
In this review I go through what comes in the box, specs, audio tests, and much more (timestamps below). I do show some examples of songs that I recorded vocals with in this review. QUICK NOTE: I record and mix the way a band wants to sound... It is my job to make THEIR SOUND a reality, so although this is a way to see how the Rode NT1-A fits in a mix, I just also want you to know that each artist is different and wants a different overall sound and tone.
Be sure to check out the testing and audio samples and see if this is right for you! Every person has different expectations of audio gear. If the features are what you need, and you like the sound, then it is right for you!
Thanks for watching the Audio Hotline! I'll see you Audio Nerds next time!

Already bought the mic yesterday and needed to watch reviews to have more confidence in my decision. Thanks for the video :)
Great review. I took a sound engineering class at Collin College (north Texas), and in that class we reviewed several microphones, that was when I got acquainted with the Rode name brand. Our instructor had a highly favorable opinion of Rode and without a doubt, this is where one can find the more bang for the buck, these microphones are great at their price point even competing with more expensive European counterparts.
i’m actually from that area, never knew collin college offered sound engineering courses.
I think only Australia know to manufacture distinguished microphones.
Dang I think this review has me set on getting this mic. (I do voice synth stuff and was looking to upgrade my blue yeti to another mic and this is one was definitely a big possibility. It sounds great even with just talking and such so it'll do well for my streams it seems. ) so thank you for this review!
I am about to start Voice over work so looking for a starter kit and this Mic was recommended so this review really helped. Thank you!
I use this review as an ASMR video. Works every time. On as for the NT1A, i have some old Neumann condensers and always end up using my trusty old NT1A. 8 years joy! Thanks for the review old chap.
This sounds gorgeous
It was a fun review man.! Many people have compared this bundle to the Sontronics STC-20 microphone. I'm really looking forward to someone doing a proper comparison video between the two...
Thanks for the review. Trying to decide between the AT2035 and Rode Nt1-A. So far I love both of them haha.
Brilliant video! Fun fact - At around 06:04 when he was like, “Warning... it’s going to be a Plosives Test”, I jumped right outta my stretchy pose on the couch to bring down the volume on my headphones!
Ah, only if I can type it to make it sound as hilarious as the situation was!! 🙈
Bloody beautiful review mate. Would love to see you compare this mic against the NT1. All the breast.
Just got this for my birthday! Album coming soon
This review has basically convinced me this is the one I need. You gained my like and follow, the whole video is perfect!
My only question is: i know it's a condenser mic, but have you ever tried recording some metal growl/scream vocals or some high pitched voices on this Rode?
I am glad you like it!
Yes, I have recorded a decent amount of metal/hardcore vocalists with the NT1A and I can say it is one of my favorite condenser mics for that style of vocals. It adds a cool clarity to screams, and by doing so it really drives the intensity of the vocals. It’s just awesome. If you are worried about the sizzle on the top end of this mic, the NT1 is also a good option and it isn’t as boosted in the top end. I personally love the high end of this mic for screams though.
@@AudioHotline Damn dude I really didn't expect such a fast reply!
Thank you very much for your output, this is gonna be my next upgrade in my small home studio so I can work on my projects with a great mic :)
After trying a lot of different mics to record my vocals and acoustic guitar parts, I settled on this one.
This is a great video my man lol 6:50 had me crackin up
Thanks! Great review. I'll need to learn more about what the specs mean.
Sounds incredible for the price. I’m impressed

straight off the bat, this sounds so crisp...mmmh, I'm buying one soon
mine arrives tonight. I currently do most my ldc stuff with a 2020 which is also a decent mic. I worked with a buddy's nt1 tho and really liked it. Plus, they back their stuff well, like a 10 year warranty on this thing, which is nice.
Great video sir. Hope you're keeping well in this trying time.
This is the best/funniest review I’ve ever watched 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

delight for the ears
I'm very old and the rock n roll at the end hurt my ears. 🤪 The rest was great. I've got one, ten years ago, and the Rode procaster dynamic. Great mics. My next mic, I'm thinking the lewitt 440 or NT1, or AT4047, or Stam Audio thingy 87. I'm going to try taming the NT1a top end with that dbx pre amp with de-esser first though. Great fun vids. 👍
Man you 're so funny!!! Love you so much...
CAVEAT EMPTOR everyone: This mic, while a terrific deal in all the explained aspects, is not so easy to set up and get the desired results from if you enjoy de facto bass boost and excited enriched harmonics such as when you are crunching on your Feurich grand using a dynamic CAD. For a GoPro Hero 7 black user like me equipped with a studio audio interface made by Solid State Logic, here is what particularly worked for me: 1) Connect your Rode condenser mic to SSL2+ input socket of choice via the complementary XLR to XLR long cable, 2) Supply phantom power via its 48V button and disable its LINE and Hi-Z buttons while optionally activating the 4K legacy mode for crisper tone quality, 3) Turn its Monitor dial all the way to INPUT "with or without the stereo button pressed down" so that the captured sound will enter your iMac, 4) Setup iMac audio midi under UTILITIES folder so that SSL+ sends to output3 and output4 ports, 5) Connect an RCA to TRS mini cable all the way to Go Pro adapter from your SSL2+ output 3+4 ports, 6) Choose LINE IN as your input source in Go Pro. AND THAT's it! Don't forget to check your SSL2+ volume meter to avoid distortion however! Since this is not a stereo microphone and some distortion can be reached if you are not careful, the stereo button I mentioned is optional even though the LINE send is stereo. Cordially, Dr. Oz.
As a spoken word guy I feel the NT-1 is the one to have. My voice is reasonably deep and even so this one is a little too boosted at the top for me, IMHO. Maybe I'd like it more if the NT-1 didn't exist.
Wow, that subscriber count is going up fast. It seems like I congratulated you on 5K a week ago and you're nearly at 6K. Congratulations!
Get a TLM-103 😉
Is it too harsh ? i want a little bassy mic is the nt1a wrong choice for it ?
@@egegulkaya2525 there are better choices for spoken word than NT1a, especially if you want something with bass in it
I suggest looking at mics like the Shure SM27, Audio Technica AT4040, Warm Audio WA47jr if you definitely want a condenser, or even a handheld dynamic like the Behringer XM8500 if you're just looking into casual recording or streaming, especially in an untreated space
I have a very deep voice and do you think the rode nt1a should be good for me?
@@enriquekahn9405 i got the NT1 ,and im very happy with it.Still, thanks for your suggestions. Have a nice day.
side note, when doing your song examples, is there any chance you could include a lady's voice/a voice of a higher register? I found these useful but still quite difficult to translate to how I might experience the product
An awesome review and video as per usual. 😁 👍 👍
Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
Thanks very helpful🤗

excellent video organization
Love ya!
The Nt1-a was my first studio mic (I recorded a tone of songs with it) ... When I bought the Nt1 The Nt1-a just sat there... So I sold it. Did I regret it? not really, it's a bit harsh on the high frequenciessssss... The Nt1 takes eq much better.
Great content like always
I agree, the NT1 definitely does take EQ way better. When I didn’t have the NT1 yet, and was using the NT1-A, I did find myself bringing down the top end with certain people’s voices. There have been times I have picked the NT1-A over the NT1, but it is usually the other way around... Having a flatter frequency response is just so nice when recording lots of different kinds of voices. The ONLY thing that has bugged me about the NT1, is reliability issues. I have gone through several NT1 mics, but the NT1-A I have never had any issues with. I know that isn’t the case with everyone though, I think I was just a bit unlucky.
Thank you!!
@@AudioHotline what happenedto the nt1's? Did they stop working? Because i'm thinking about buying a rode nt1 but i want them to last long
If you love the NT1a so much, I think you might find the "Sontronics STC-20" delightful ^^
Very awesome videos man!
Rode has got game..all their products are awesome
which one is better in ur opinion rode nt1a or stc-20?
@@nyzer1620 Personally I think the STC-20 sounds (way) better. It sounds more natural by a mile. While the NT-1a has a low self-noise, it just doesn't work on everybodies voice (boxy sound), especially when your voice is on the rather deep side. But don't get me wrong: The STC-20 extremely quiet. So to conclude this thought: When you're on a very tight budget, then get the NT-1a; but if you've got about 30 bucks to spare, then get the STC-20 100%.
Hey man, great video thanks for posting! I was wondering if you had a link for that Pop-filter that you suggested. Thanks for your time. Cheers
Been using this mic since 2014 , the most quite mic ever, get it you won't regret it
I've bought a protective case for my mic (and Focusrite, a bunch of cables etc). Great for travel.
Thanks Sir
Thanks dude
NVM is lowkey fire 🔥
Peanutses... Thank you for clarifying what you were saying because woah...
It made me buy this mic .... How ever it cost me like 3 times more than what i make in a month in this country
Hi! Love your videos, very informative and entertaining. I wanted to ask you something. I'm a male vocalist and artist just starting out to do serious recordings, I have very bad mic right now (PreSonus M7). Now I want to get myself a mic just to record vocals and nothing else, and I want it to be good enough to release stuff with and stick to forever. How do you think does NT1A compare to Sennheiser MK4 if I can find them at about the same price? Is something like MXL 770 more logical to get to release earlier stuff on a tighter budget and wait for new microphones to come out, or should I get this one or MK4 and keep for at least the next 5 years? Thanks :)
never used the mic your talking about only the Nt1a but ive been using it for the last 10 years recently jsut got a really expensive mic (10x the price of this one) and alot of my clients or people i record prefer the Rode one, it really is bang for your buck deffinatly pro quality, and if your a decent engineer you can mould it how the video says with eq and pluggins to achieve more or less the sound you want
I had fun :D
Hey dude, love your work. I'm looking to do voiceovers for you tube, what would you recommend as an inexpensive audio recording software for windows? Thanks
You do good comedies , made me laugh 😍🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
Ø sounds like the “u” in the word burn
Got this mic for free through work never before have my friends heard me ragequit in tarkov this clearly.
😂 that would be me too.
The pre amp is gonna make the sound better so. Getting a dope interface is worth it! I have a m box mini I've thought about getting something beefier any suggestions I m of the Apollo is the Holy grail and I have a Nt1a but thought about upgrading the mic
Hey man-great video! Can you give me a piece of advice, AKG P220 vs RODE NT1-A what would you choose?
I need it for streamin' an' recordin' some game podcasts:)
I am currently using the 220 as one of my main recording mics, and my NT1a arrives tonight, so I can't directly compare them yet. However, the 220 is definitely a good mic, and I get good results on acoustic instruments and vocals
@@user-qt5eh9wb7g maybe you can give some advice now?
@@user-qt5eh9wb7g hello can you give some advice now
I like this mic I just wish they made different colors but I get they didn’t want to make it look like the NT1 but I’m big on appearance and I think they should make different colors. I like the all black mics personality
I like this mic, but the top end is a bit sibilant and a bit too much at times. Hard to describe and not necessarily in a bad way, but I think from the videos I've seen the NT-1 is more me. Like you say, personal preference and its definitely good quality 😊
Hey man, hope you're still reading and replying to comments on this 6 month old video: I just got this microphone, and my "S"-sounds are really horrible. They blow out completely. The way you said "Specy Spec Specs" would've made any listener deaf in my setup. I have it running through a mixer with everything set to neutral/zero and 48v phantom power, with a 2 track rca cable to single jack that goes into the mic input on my pc. Would the quality improve to match yours if I have a usb interface? Or is my mic bad?
hey, are you still using a mixer? I have made the experience that audio interfaces work way better than mixers
For a loud baritone singer, in rock music in example, this mic is a little too crisp and sounds a bit cold and tends to clip easily. I find it hard to sing dynamically with this mic as the vocal volume may differ in the same line. If your vocal line is very straight forward and low volume, this mic will do the work very well. In high volumes, it's hard to get that warmth and power into its sound.
If you want warmer and fuller tone, I'd use something else. It is a good mic and it does what it promises, but its soundscape is quite chill and crisp, which definitely doesn't work for my vocals. For the price range as its gone down drastically in couple of years, this mic however isn't at all a bad choice to try. But you really need to reduce echo and room sound with padding, acoustic plates etc., because this mic will sound pretty bad, if the recording room isn't adequate for its purpose. So this mic is rather contextual and I recommend to try it out. But my experience with it has been that I've resulted using different mics altogether after hours of trying make Röde NT1-A sound good for my voice. So as the dude in the video said, it doesn't work for everybody's voice and I can second that.
OMG u also watch Idubzz, I love his Chanel. Also btw what amp/stereo do u use to sing with this microphone?
Hi thank you for you comment! What microphone you like to

Hello, I’m currently using this Mic for voice over but I’m having some problems with the it sounding tinny, like a metallic echo or reverb. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to combat that? Could it be a pop filter issue or is it the mic in general?
I am a rapper with a lower tone voice & i'm looking for a warm but clear sound for vocals. Liking how this sounds.
I am just planning to record songs at home, its not a home studio, I would be recording mostly early in the morning, when it’s usually quieter, so, please let me know if I should get a condenser microphone or dynamic microphone?

Hey. Thinking about buying this microphone, but im not sure. Just wondering if there are any other microphones in the same price range that are better? And how does this microphone with kinda loud and high pitched singing?
What mic stand do you recommend for this product?
Hello "evil laugh" i died.
How you know my name was Jeph 😂😂
I got the NT1-A with the 2-layer metal pop filter included. Strange reactivity with the booth/face. I think it's reflectance (not transmission per se)They were right to go to a plain double fabric mesh. That's what I use now. Once that's squared away, it's a nice microphone, half like the expensive smoothies and half like the bright ones. The metal grid pop filter in this review works great too.. Experiment with your spacing....this wants 6-8 inches for the smooth effect..
you seem like you know what you are talking about ill sub you should let me known what the best usb mic to buy compared to best cheap high end mic
Hey great video, can i use this mic in a not-treated room and still not get a lotta noise?
Depends on what audio interface you use and on the noise you have in the background 😂 But... there is a plugin called Brusfri which is a noise reduction plugin. I have it, its pretty cool!
@@bargettobeats thanks for sharing ur information!
Why are you using a zoom as a your preamp/interface? 😂 Great reviews though!
Adam Speaking my main interface is an Apollo twin, but not everyone has a nice interface/nice preamps like that, so I use the H6 because it has average preamps (similar to a focusrite) in it. With more expensive mics, I will use the Apollo, but I am basically just trying to deliver the sound that would be achievable given the price of the mic and who I assume would be buying it.
You sound good on it. I’m disturbed that you act like the NT1-A is your baby. I guess the XLR cable could be the ambilicle cord and the zipper pouch could be the vagi... never mind. Your baby is so cute.

I need help with gain staging this microphone with my Apollo twin x for vocals in music. I’m also using a neve 1073. I’m not sure at what level I should set the microphone since I’m also using a pre-amp. Does anyone know where to find this information or a good rule of thumb when gain staging?
The way I have used external preamps in the past is by using a 1/4in TRS to female XLR cable. I plug the 1/4in cable into the input of the interface (apollo) and then the female xlr into the line output of the external preamp (1073). That way you are using line level, rather than mic level, which will make a big difference since line level is +4 dBu and Mic Level is around -60 dBu. At that point you will just plug the mic into the input jack on the 1073 external preamp. You'll have the interface's gain essentially set to zero and you will control the gain with the external preamp (1073).
That's what I do and it works well for me.
This is the cable I was referring to:

I'm struggling with the decision which mic to buy, the decision is between this Rode NT1-A and Behringer B-1. It will be paired with scarlett audio interface. Honestly, I like Rode more because it sounds better warmer, has more natural tone, it's more pleasing to my ears when I listen to your both recordings and out of the box it sounds better but it's pricey. Behringer costs 106$ and Rode costs 226$ respectively in places that I can buy it. What is a better investment, your personal opinion as a professional, can I make Behringer to sound like this, I'm going to use mic for streaming, recording, and video tutorials?
the Behringer B-1 will do a really good job, wont sound exactly the same. if your just recording for voice overs then they are very similiar and you will get a very similiar result.... if your recording songs however the rode would give a more warmer and pleasant sound but honestly ive seen £40 mics do a good job for voice overs just do a bit of eqin and your fine.
@@PRODBYPEPE Thanks I appreciate the advice.
what brand of pop filter are you using?
Does the NT1-A need a cloudlifter?
any 1 know if the adversary song is out yet?
Why is there background noise when I record? Could it be the room or my phantom power?
There can definitely be a few different culprits.
Do you have a fan on or a loud AC or heating unit? Or even a loud computer fan?
Also, what interface do you use to record and what gain percentage do you set it to?
It could also come down to the cable, is it a pretty nice cable? It could have some sort of grounding issue.
@@AudioHotline could just be the natural noise of the microphone, it’s pretty quiet. I’ll just edit it out.
