I like the Plantation 3 Star because it has character but it isn't overwhelming. If I'm making a mojito, I'll use it because I usually only have one white rum,and and this is it, but if I were at a friend's house and they had Bacardi silver, I might prefer it in a mojito. If I'm making something either simpler or more complex like a daiquiri or a zombie, respectively, I would reach for the 3star because it adds flavor to simple drinks and holds its own against stronger flavors.

I do think when we talk about Sandalwood, we are talking about more a earthy flavor. That’s a really specific value. Very hard to describe. I think it can be a very woodsy. But I get how it could be looped in with the agricole category. Great tasting today! Love this rum.

I think the whole plantation range is the dog's B's. I just wish it was stocked in the main supermarkets because it knocks the socks of most of the standard rums they all have. The Stiggins, the OFTD, the 3 star and the dark and you really have all you need to cover most cocktails.

    2 Plantation 3 Star Rum
    2 pineapple juice
1/4 Lime Juice (adds tartness to the pineapple juice)
1 Coco Lopez creme of coconut
1/8 Giffards Ogeat (adds nuttiness to the coconut)
    1 glass of crushed ice
    Blend thoroughly

Hey LR Vogt. Try subbing your lime for 3.4g/l of citric acid in your pineapple + 3/4 drops of saline solution. And then add that to your mix.
The citric acid will bring the acidity of the pineapple to that of lime (6%). You will be impressed

    Hi Steve,
Great channel and a huge repository of knowledge and ideas, it's been a great help and learning resource, however, as a total newb when it comes to rum and rum-based cocktails there are still some things that I'm not sure about.
I've decided that I'm going to make rum-based Tiki cocktails this summer - been wanting to do so for years but never really got around to it but now I am.
I started out with a couple of bottles of white Cuban rum for Pina Coladas and Painkillers which I later learned and experienced is not the type of rum you want to use as it is overtaken by the other ingredients. Therefore, I recently also acquired a bottle of Plantation 5-year rum and a bottle of Kraken Spiced Rum (I know you've made videos pointing out that it's overpriced but I got this one cheap). I intend to buy three more bottles to complete my selection; a bottle of Plantation Dark Rum, a bottle of overproof rum (Plantation OFTD), and a bottle of regular non-aged rum (Plantation Grand Reserva).
QUESTION 1: What do you think of my selection of rums - is there something you would add or substitute?
QUESTION 2: Can Falernum be used as a substitute or alternative to fresh lime juice (as it is not always possible to get them from my local grocery shop)?
QUESTION 3: Is there an alternative to Orgeat (almond syrup) like perhaps Amaretto? If not, is Monin's any good?
QUESTION 4: Some cocktail recipes (Mai Tai especially) call for a very specific (and expensive) Curacao called Pierre Ferrand Curacao - is it worth getting this one or can I use Cointreau Triple-Sec Liqueur (which I already have because I use it for some desserts)?

Hey Mate, deffo join us on the Live Stream on Sunday night, so much knowledge there and plenty of advise on hand. But i'll be as helpful as I can...
Q1. Decent starter collection. The beauty of Rum, there's something for every taste, so just dive in. You can always add more.
Q2. NOPE. Falernum is not Lime. It's a Barbadian Liqueur. Much similar to an Orgeat, but different if that makes sense.
Q3. There is no alternative to Orgeat. It is what it is. But dunno if you're UK, i'd put the brands in the Order... ODK, William Fox then Monin (All available from Drinkstuff). Then Giffard and Bristol Syrups.
If you're US/Can, I hear BG Reynolds is decent.
Q4. Watch this, it answers that EXACT Question.... ruclips.net/video/6amUj41oU1I/видео.html

Hey Steve, good review. I have a request. Would you review Don Papa. I'd love to hear your take on it. For me. Yeah, it's very sweet and not "proper" rum but I prefer it to say Havanna Club 7. A bit of a guilty pleasure. But definitely guilty.

    • @Decky1991live
      @Decky1991live 2 года назад

Just to clarify I'd give Havanna Club 7 50/100. It's not good, not bad, it's 7 year old rum. Pleasantly woody and not offensive. Don Papa is overly sweet but if it's all the back shelf has I can sip it neat, 55/100.
Just didn't want people thinking I liked Don Papa. The shame!
