(I know many very naive people think that he wasn't the boss when he stepped out of the spotlight during the scandals of 2019 and afterward. But he never stopped being the top boss.) Every indication is that, although he obviously loves money, there is one thing that he absolutely cannot stand: Not being able to totally control the artists under the label to the extent that they have to think of themselves as his employees, who can lose everything immediately if they displease him. If they get too big, too famous and too rich...YHS loses that control. If they make too many connections with too many powerful artists and companies outside of YG, he can't control them easily by threatening to end their careers. His ego can't take the loss of control. It was the scandals and the failure of the new boy groups to reach Big Bang levels (after he had spent years and 10 times more investment in them than in Blackpink) that created a situation where the company had no choice but to invest more in Blackpink and let Blackpink get to level they are now (as basically the "can't afford to lose" group that has kept YG in the top ranks of Korean entertainment companies during the past 5 years). I'm sure YHS is not happy with the current situation now.

I've accepted as a casual fan that YG treated them like this "rare and exclusive gem" and yes it did make them very popular, but I think it's really hurt the girls in their personal growth. If the company had treated them better, they probably would have stayed with YG not only for Blackpink schedule but also for their solo activities. I believe yg is the reason they became famous and are in a position they are in today. Their training, tactics and methods, though too strict, controlling and stressful, worked for them initially. Now that they are in a position that they can sustain themselves and participate in as many ventures as they want, independently and away from yg, they should and are doing it.
I think any fan of blackpink was over the moon with them not having individual contracts with YG. Glad that they can explore more of their potential . Also, didn't YG take away the notebooks they were writing music in (Jennie comes to mind) and telling them that it's property of YG. I also feel like they were never supportive of the female groups because if you look at iKon or even Big Bang, they had more freedom in writing their own stuff and having it released. That's just my opinion though .

Taking into account both the Korean entertainment industry (and business in general) and YG's history 🤔 I just don't buy into the the idea that YG restricted their artists to be "exclusive" but as a form of control. Restricting their activities while under those exclusive contracts can be used used against arist rather it be control or retaliation 😓 in short limiting appearances and refusing to put out songs & music that have been made & are ready to be released makes it clear that the restrictions are ment to put the artist in their place 😒.
