The first Quilty Questions video! Whoop whoop! What topic should we discuss next month? xo Irene
My reading has come up with more thoughts:
If you move the work too fast in an unusual direction for the machine, and the thread gets in the way of the needle, you can actually pierce the thread! Quickly snarls and shreds.
If you pull too hard and move the needle, and that’s easy with a finer needle, it can strike the throat plate hole edge and cause a burr, which then catches on thread. File it back with emery if you can get some in there. Tricky.
If the timing is off the needle can strike the bobbin housing, or something, and cause a burr down there. Smooth it off.
I’m having problems, not resolved yet, but maybe these things are your problem
Tension is my biggest issue when I go from just quilting to doing more layers I don't know whether to make the number smaller or bigger I truly don't understand it
As I begin to take baby steps with learning to sew I really appreciate your many suggestions about issues that may come up with my equipment and sewing techniques. Thank you!
Thank you! Checklists are especially helpful when we are frustrated and having issues.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! My goal when I got up this morning was to practice stipple quilting 6X6 quilt sandwiches. I'm new to free-motion quilting and not ready to commit to FMQing a quilt until I'm a little steadier in the skill. I've spend since 7:30 this morning fighting with my machine and watching videos trying to figure out WHY, WHY, WHY my thread was breaking. I thread and re-thread my machine, changed the spool, changed the needle, and yet the thread continued to break. Yours in the only video I've found that discusses thread breakage during FMQ. I am not an idiot, or alone. I did one more needle change and low and behold . . .
So thank you for alleviating my frustration today. I managed to get 1 6x6 done, but now I know I'm set to try again tomorrow.
This was a great check list for troubleshooting! Thank you!
As always. Great tips. Thank you.
thank you for all your help.. by the way your sewing machine is very nice
Thanks for this video-I have saved it to go through when I next free motion. I also have the Janome and get very frustrated when the thread keeps breaking. I find that a new needle and a clean machine are definitely musts before I start. I will also check out needle size for thread-haven’t paid attention to this before. Love your videos!
I have a Bernina350 and I am excited to see you quilt on a Bernina. Thanks!
Such great tips! Thanks for sharing 😃👍
Thanks a lot for sharing your ideas 👍👍👍🤝
Thank you. I've seen my thread shredding. I'm not sure why. I would bet I need a different needle size. I did have a friend say to begin free motion quilting, he used polyester thread until he got the rhythm. He said it was stronger and didn't break as often. Downloads are great. Thank you again.
This was a Great. tutorial thank you
Thank you for the Quilty Questions!! I have a Singer Featherweight that was giving me problems. Turns out there was a little notch the bobbin case set in. Thankfully I had reached out on a quilting group and they knew what it was.
This video helped me a lot,
Thank you
Thank you 😊 finally 😊 the needle was in backwards
When I first started free motion quilting my thread would break a lot! When I went to the store to get more thread I discovered there was thread labeled machine quilting thread! I seldom have thread breaking issues now. I had no idea you had to use special thread. ☺️. Now when people post about this issue I always ask if they are using it. Thanks for the other tips!
Tension, tension tension! I struggle with it all the time! The top tension and now on my old Bernina I bought there’s the bobbin tension too!
Oh yes thank you so much for this. I will try out your tips later
Great! Hope this will help 😊
XThank you Irene, this is very helpful! I did have a needle issue and my machine was not threaded correctly! So frustrating when it happens..😩
Thank you so much for your help, my problem was I have insert the needle on the wrong side, now it is solve.
OMG!!!!!!!!! Thank you do much. I just spent 3 days and 2 hrs searching through you tube to finally come across this video. every other video talked about everything pertaining to thread breakage EXCEPT having the needle in backwards. I am not a novice and have made countless quilts, but my life is stressful right now trying to get a blankie done for my granddaughter for Christmas and was on the backer when everything broke loose (lol) I just wasn't paying attention. keep up the videos!!!!!
Hello, thank you for this video. Very helpful. I would like to ask how to manage a bulky quilt while free motion quilting? I find it so hard shifting the thing around. Any tips welcome 😀
Hi Irene! I love your channel. Can we talk about making consistent stitches? I am having trouble with this issue,
Thanks for the great tips! Going through a checklist can sometimes save a lot of frustration when you finally get the time to sew!
I agree. Especially when we are frustrated. It's easy to forget the basics.
I only skip/shred mt top thread when going backwards with fmq.
Another thing to check is that you have the correct type of bobbin for your machine. The generic ones sometimes are not the right shape. Also if you use poor quality or older thread, that can cause breakage too.
I also have a Janome machine. Where you first thread on top, I had actually created a groove to the left of entrance point and the thread got stuck in it. Service man filled it in with super glue. Wish me luck!
Recently when I've been piecing my machine seems to suck in the fabric. It's been serviced. I'm using 2.5" squares so not tiny. Could it be the fabric (it's a memory quilt so some is a poly cotton blend), thread (Aurifil 50 wt cotton), or something else? Tips or tricks. I guess I could buy a single hole stitch plate, but I've not had many problems previously. The machine is only 3 years old.
On my machine the flat side of the needle does not go to the back. It’s a modern Juki, on my old Singers it doesn’t either. Great advice otherwise, thanks for the video. I usually use polyester thread, I can quilt faster as the thread seldom breaks.
I am do quilts, so I am using quilting thread, should the needle be something different. kaye
How to know when to adjust your tension
My top thread keeps breaking at the fabric. I'm just about done completing my quilt. N my thread starts breaking. So I tried everything I could think of. N u suggested. My tension shouldn't have caused it bc I have perfect stitching throughout quilt. It's threaded proper bobbin isn't over wound. I've cleaned the lint n fuzz. My machine pulls fabric its self. Nothing wrong with needle but changed it anyway. I've re threaded like 20 times. N I can't figure it out. It's driving me crazy I wanna finish my blanket very badly. My machine not a year old yet. Ether. Wondering if u have any ideas it's stitch 3 when needle goes through fabric the fourth time is pops up thread when the needle comes up. Any Suggestions would be great.
A great help! Once I put my needle in backwards which caused breakage. How’s your little Jules? Any pictures?
Ah yes.. So many things can go wrong while sewing! Jules is doing great. There are some pictures on my stories on Instagram ;) instagram.com/stories/sugaridoo
Tension, I love GAMbit I can't get the tension right on my new machine.
My machine seems to not like sewing in one direction. The thread will either break or not sew at all. Help
How low can the upper tension be?
Misschien een vreemde vraag. Maar waarom doe je de filmpjes in het Engels? Er zijn heel weinig filmpjes in het Nederlands.
I have s dealer for my new janome 740dc machine
Another possibility: Your free motion foot is too high. I was having thread breakage and did all of the things you suggested. I lowered the pressure foot height and that fixed the problem.
My machine gets tired after sewing for too long. Union contract breaks required, I guess!
If the machine doesn't like a certain direction, what's the solution? Meander is suggested as one of the easiest quilting patterns but if some directions don't work - suggestions welcomed! I struggle 🙇♂️
My needle was backwards. *%$%**^&*&*(!. Thank you!!
Thread cutter does not cut!
Hm that sounds like something a dealer should take a look at..
