  • Translation or Protein Synthesis:
The process of protein synthesis, or translation, occurs in the ribosomes and involves 3 steps:
    1. Initiation: The process begins when the small ribosomal subunit binds to the mRNA (messenger RNA). The start codon (usually AUG) on the mRNA attracts the initiator tRNA (carrying the amino acid methionine) to the ribosome.
    2. Elongation: During this phase, the ribosome moves along the mRNA, reading it in sets of three nucleotides called codons. A complementary tRNA molecule carrying the matching amino acid enters the ribosome for each codon. The ribosome catalyzes the formation of a peptide bond between adjacent amino acids, forming a growing polypeptide chain.
    3. Termination: The process continues until a stop codon (UAA, UAG, or UGA) is encountered. There are no tRNA molecules carrying amino acids that correspond to these codons. Instead, release factors bind to the stop codon, causing the ribosome to release the newly synthesized protein.
