I know that a lot of people, including Frank Sinatra himself thought that he should have been cast as Sky Masterson, but I just hate the idea that he wouldn't be Nathan. This is one of my favorite movies and the reason is Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit.
I'd never heard he or anyone thought he should have been Sky. He might have been terrific, too. Brando was the choice for Sky, though, being only 31 and making women swoon. Sinatra was about 10 years past that, and besides, who then would have been Nathan? That part I don't think would have been right for Brando.
@@eidelbus Yup Sinatra definitely believed that the cool, suave Sky Masterson should have been given to him - and so did a few critics. I heard that that is one of the reasons that he recorded the song "Luck be a Lady Tonight". He wanted to prove that he could have played that part. I don't know - Marlon Brando was such a.good actor I don't think that he would have had a problem with playing Nathan. But - I doubt that the public would have accepted him in that part. Anyway, despite his feeling Sinatra was absolutely perfect for that part.
Awww.....so hard to resist Sinatras singing...... It must have been so rewarding to b in this scene. Singing with the Chairman of the board. Iconic both of them.
Such natural chemistry between Miss. Blaine and the Chairman of the Board! Simply a wonderful scene in an endearing classic. This was my first high school musical and remains one of my all-time favorite musicals.
Men with hats and men without hats and safety dancing. I looked up the latter. Until a few days ago - never knew they were big in the 1980s . Canadian. Respect. Prayer Meetings.
Oh, she did. Vivian Blaine was very popular in those times. She created that role. When it was first staged in London around the time Queen Elizabeth was crowned, the Queen went to meet her backstage. She was really impressed with Vivian Blaine. And when it was time to do the film, she was first offered the role of Sara, but she wanted Adelaide, so they gave it to her. Marilyn Monroe wanted the part, but the director, Mankewicz preferred Blaine. I think I know why. Considering that Adelaide and Nathan Detroit have been engaged for 14 years, they've got to be an older couple couple compared to Sky and Sarah. In the story by Damon Ranyon, Sky is 30 and Sara is 26, so Brando (31) and Simmons (26) were the perfect pair. Sinatra was 40 at that time and Blaine was 35, so they're a perfect pair, too. Variety magazine wrote that the casting was simply perfect! I like this film very much, I've watched it many, many times during the Covid lockdown. It was a perfect escape.
I actually never really thought of that. That would have been perfect proof that Nathan was telling the truth. however in the stage version Sarah Brown does reveal to Adelaide that Nathan was there at the prayer meeting. That's why Adelaide says "Well how do you like that rat?! Just when he should have been lying, he's telling the truth"
You promise me this, you promise me that You promise me anything under the sun Then you give me a kiss, And your grabbing your hat And your off to the races again When I think of the time gone by Adelaide, Adelaide! And I think of the way I tried! Adelaide! I could honestly die. Call a lawyer and sue me, Sue me What can you do me, I love you. Give a holler and hate me Hate me Go ahead, hate me! I LOVE YOU The best years of my life, I was a fool to give you Alright, already, I'm just a no-goodnick! Alright, already, it's true. So new. So sue me, sue me What can you do me? I love you You gamble it here, You gamble it there You gamble on everything, all except me And I'm sick of you keeping me up in the air Till your back in the money again When I think of the time gone by
I know it’s just the script, but it always bothered me that it didn’t occur to Nathan to say, “Come with me and I’ll prove it.” It’s a prayer meeting. Anyone can go.
I also like the part starting at 3:03, where there was a brief silence, Nathan comes close to her, sits down, takes off his hat and looks at her tear-stained face tenderly. It almost makes me cry.
I think because he would be so embarrassed for his cronies to know he and Adelaide had been fighting. If you notice, at the start of the song, he was looking around to make sure nobody was watching. Also, Adelaide was very upset and just not in the right mood to meet the gamblers.
I like Frank Sinatra's singing way more than Nathan Lane's singing. But I thought Nathan Lane's acting for Nathan Detroit was way better than Frank Sinatra's
It was a different interpretation. The Nathan Lane-Faith Prince version was comical and they aimed more at making the audience laugh instead of acting hurt. Whereas in the Sinatra-Blaine version, the heartache was real.
Respond with "Danke Shön" (Many thanks) and they'll have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. if you're going to say bless you in German I'm going to say thank you in German simple as that.
@@Darkhonor21 Yeah, my point is, why don`t they say "bless you" and use "Gesundheit"? I am German and I would never say "bless you" to a person in Germany :-D Do you understand?
@@Randy1337 To change things up a little, keep things interesting. If you heard the same old same old all the time you'd probably go mad. Im sorry but I hate Frank as Nathan, maybe I just love to Broadway version too much. I also hate how Nathan is the one to leave and not Adelaide. The whole point of the song is that Nathan has been stringing Adelaide on for years and thats she's fed up and finally leaves and Nathan actually loses something he cares about. Frank is a GOD HE SOUNDS LIKE HEAVEN
In that case, pack your satchel. It's coming to you surely.
Indeed, he does. And unfortunately one of the biggest flaws in the film, totally mis-cast.

Jayjen35 I agree!! Nathan isn’t supposed to be young like Sky was, (remember he’s been engaged for 14 years)

What a wonderful scene--best in the movie!
Currently upset with my boyfriend and he sent me this 😂😂
My almost favorite from the movie. It's hard to choose, but this one is perfect in many ways.
I thought the lyrics were "sue me, sue me, go ahead, screw me" and my friend laughed so hard when I sang it.

LOVE this song. It helped me with my voice control.

Lane played the character as it was written/intended, as a comical, over-the-top New Yorker. Sinatra adapted the character to act and sing like him.
