I had a shoot yesterday, everything was going against us, time, lightning, sound, location. It is almost always like that for me. But then I pulled out a 1.4 23m lens, 4 audio (main, lower gain, wireless ) a couple of small tube Leds and I was set. No need for monopod. The FX30 is really a steal. A complete kit fits anywhere si you can carry everything with you
On the other hand for social media I am not sure 180 rule is still as big a thing. Besides, since you have 120fps with audio. We are taking 1/240 shutters and 1/480 if you go with 1080 240fps.
The black magic is miles ahead. Braw and ProRes are way nicer to work with. When you film in 4K ProRes there is no crop. Once you add an external monitor to the fx30 you’re already at the size of the black magic that doesn’t require a monitor. And for professional work, I find that auto focus fails more often than not at getting the shot I want.
I understand this only if you’re constantly working in big professional projects cause i know what you mean about the auto focus potentially failing on a certain shot. Well when you work on bigger professional projects i understand that a bigger rig where you’re in control of absolutely everything is crucial, but when you’re working on other content that isn’t supposed to look like a high budget movie then a compact camera like the fx30 will work 100% just fine.
I feel like most RUclipsrs making this kind of comparison videos only shoot "run and gun", which frankly is cinematography in the same way shooting with a phone can be. Most serious work in the field is not run and gun. The definition of the craft is not. I feel like a there's an entire up and coming generation that is taught by you people that the most amazing thing about filmmaking (and gear) is actually not having to do it yourself. But wow, I feel like this people would rather take an FX30 to a film set rather than an Arri Alexa because it's "easier". It feels nice like scrolling through TikToks before bed. You see, there's this thing about mastering a craft or an art form which is delayed gratification, it happens to musicians, painters and well, filmmakers. It builds mental fortitude and will, which strengthens the sense of being an "author" or a Director. It lets you analyze yourself, self critique your work and most importantly, it builds the ability to conduct the orchestra of microvariables that present to you at all times while executing this field of work. The normalizing of "not having enough time" to work on a shot is like... what else should you be doing? The matcha is getting cold, I get it, but, maybe actually perform what you're there to do. I guess this is true if you just do weddings or quick events, but hell, that's not even 1/4 of what you can do as a filmmaker, so a comparison like this without proper context is just irresponsible.
Saying the definition of the craft is inherently not run and gun is a ridiculous claim. Cinematography is not the one specific style of production you deem “proper”. There is a ton of great examples of incredible cinematography shot very run and gun.
I have a modded original 6K. It has the Tilta screen kit. So that iPhone sized rear mounted monitor is superb for low and overhead work. Added velcro so a cardboard hood fits onto the screen. A terabyte of on board SSD. Variable ND on the lens. Its a superb machine to shoot with hand held and nearly every shot is usable. You'll have to prize it out of my cold dead hand.
The 6K Pro is honestly a way better cinema camera in my opinion. I think you are right, the biggest thing to factor in here, is the content you shoot and your shooting style. I have the 4K with the metabones 0.67x as my B-cam and gimbal cam, my OG 6K is rigged for handheld work. This system works for me perfectly. I’ve also noticed that a lot of people talk about how they don’t like how you have to rig the pocket cameras and then go on to buy an FX3 and rig it up.
I am really not sure that that is the case right now anymore. FF has spoiled everyone because it almost always looks great. But.. if you treated the FX30 just as if it was a Black Magic, I am really not sure who comes out on top. Unlike other Sony Sensors the FX30 has really sweet shadows and rich blacks. Did they tune this sensor vs the BM6K. I only have access to the BM4K. I can test it against the FX30
@@BryanKeithPhoto Exactly. Super 35 has been used on hundreds of award-winning films from Hollywood and beyond. Full-frame is a photography standard that's only one way to approach video.
Very good video. Keep in kind these are two different cameras for two different purposes. For those who say you have to add a monitor to the FX30, in most cases you'll have to add one to the BMPCC6K too.
4:15 You say the FX30 is better "out of the box" except ND filters, built in RAW, and XLR ports, and really a 5" monitor to actually see your shot compared to the tiny 3" flippy screen...
For a new podcast with 4 cameras. Main camera, 2 focused cameras on two people and then a guest coach camera what do you recommend? Looking at the BMP G2 or Sony fx30. What will be easier for post production as well? Noticed the BMP do not record on anything higher than 1080p with hdmi.
The fx30 autofocus and versatility is what grabs me. Bare bones you can film and be discreet in a run and gun situations. Plus easy to put it on a gimbal… but would be mighty nice if they would’ve thrown in an internal electronic ND filter.
For short films (cinema) and musical videoclips in pretty low light conditions, at a high production pace, lots of action and camera travelling going on, my guess is you do recommend the FX, right? Top job, keep it up!
just a heads up, the audio sounds very high on the low end and distorts a little in my headphones making it alittle uncomfortable to listen, but im holding on 😅
As a Sony guy, I would love to have a Pocket 6k all rigged out for “big commercial sets.” But anytime I’m doing that level of work I’m renting, and if I’m renting, I’m getting something of a way higher caliber than the pocket 6k.
I have the fx3, miss the ND filters. But as for the menu, I program what I adjust normally in the fn menu. I’ve also found that auto focus is much better than my manual focus on the ronin gimbal.
hi, I'm just starting out and can't choose between fx30/bmpcc6k/Ursa mini 4.6k EF/Lumix s5iix, please tell me what is better to take, I don’t want to make a movie not youtube channel.....
I have the 6kpro and I’m selling because it’s chunky and there are times where rigging the much lighter camera would be nice. The one caveat is braw is amazing to edit.
That did cross my mind and I do have an adapter for EF lenses. But I chose to use native lenses and native lenses are designed for that camera mount and will most likely have the best possible image quality
@@BenGleasonMedia while native glass is important for autofocus performance, in terms of image quality, as long as the flange focal distance is correctly adapted (and really any quality adaptor will be built to a good tolerance), glassless adapters don't matter, as the lens is just forming an image on a sensor.
But native lens ecosystem is the Sony's is a reality. Modern lens designs are stupid sharp. Even the cheap third party ones. Not sure EF lenses should be the reference anymore.
The auto focus of the fx30 makes it better, shooting music videos with the bmpcc 4k was a long process. The fx30 makes it easy almost magical to get such high quality footage with a monster auto focus.
Trying to decide to switch/sell my 6K Pro only because of weight and lack of sensor stabilization. Auto focus is whatever, though would be terrible for vlogging (but good luck doing that with heavy glass and a rig on the 6k pro lol)
@@d.edwardsfreelanceeditorvi4212 Corporate jobs are what they are. The easier is to capture the content the better for you and your client. These days people are blogging with their iPhones and GoPro 11 and are getting impressive stabilization and dynamic range. Don't knock it.

There's a video on youtube that shows you how to use an Iphone with Lidar detector to do lidar-based autofocus. If you have an iphone 12 or later, you could mount it to the camera and use the lidar to do instant autofocus.
I would suggest getting the Bmpcc4k or 6k and then the Blackmagic atem mini if you are going to have multiple cameras. Then you’ll be able to do camera switching!
Hi, thanks for sharing this with us, it's very qualitative! I'd like to know what do you think about the Panasonic cameras (S5/S1/S1H) as they're full frame cameras and can shoot up to 6K ProRes Raw or Braw, and are also cheaper (the S5 is around 2000$ with a monitor for shooting raw). Can an S5 be good enough for more professional projects or Sony and Blackmagic are more appropriate for this?
Any of the Panasonic cameras would be a GREAT option for mor professional work, especially with that external recorder! Its going to have different color science and Sony will have the best autofocus capabilities but if that doesn’t matter to you then go for the Panasonics 👍👍
Talking about autofocus when comparing Cinema cameras is a little meh don't you think? Same for the battery life. You would rig any camera the minute you want to work on any 'cinema' level project. The FX30 would need rigging too, even that top handle counts as rigging, and we all know how inconvenient it is. And you conviniently left off the image quality, dynamic range comparison between the two. Same for the codecs, (12 bit RAW capabilities, ProRes,... ) which are way better on the BMPCC, I'm not even going to start with the exposure tools, the I/O, shutter angle, audio preamps. The FX30 is convenient, and that might be enough. Unfortunately autofocus is more important to most RUclipsrs than real cinema grade image quality, which the FX30 (I own one) is NOT capable of producing compared to any BMPCC camera, not even the micro 4/3 4k one.
Do you think BMPCC is better for Podcasting? I own FX30, and I am thinking of switching to BMPCC. Due to the possibility of recording to an SSD card (saving a lot of time), it is possible to use Atem Mini and control all the cameras. But my concern is with the size of the files, I think they are huge compared to FX30. What are your thoughts?
I am not saying the FX30 is bad, however, they call it cinema camera and they don’t even give you DCI. In my work I use DCI about 18 out of 20 times. If on top of that you are not even using native lenses that give you AF, there is absolutely no reason to go Sony if you already have the 6K Pro. Just my opinion though. Fx6 and FX9 give you DCI, so I really don’t get why the FX3 and FX30 don’t
@@BenGleasonMedia i would really like to know why they wouldn’t give you this. Just doesn’t make sense and is obviously a dealbreaker for me. Other than that, good video btw. I forgot to mention that 😉
Hey thanks man! 🙌 I honestly think they could put it in an update, as it would theoretically be a software thing. But yeah, I would also like to know why they didn’t do that! 🤷♂️
@@AlejandroGonzalez-nx7gj yes indeed ! This is a really good start in the right direction. I mean, it would be nice if it was real dci and not just 4K cropped at the top and bottom, but it is nice they implemented this. I am still between the 6k pro and the fx30. I may just wait a few more months and see what the future brings.
A7iv is better you can do lots of thing with this camera. if i have budget i will go with A7iv. 7k into 4k with 60fps. And Mechanical Shutter. Just totally a Crispy chicken.🔥
Really there is no competition for a film maker for 6K Pro: all built in professional monitor & XLR & ND & Pro level zebra, colors, histogram & internal raw . Carry couple of extra batteries you have nothing to complain about. Auto focus is a thing but not very very important for film/cinema guys (because the title of the video mentions Cinema Camera)
There's no additional crop for 4K on the 6K pro -- you can select to use the entire 6K sensor. Lets not forget there's Apple ProRes for the 6K pro. That is a massive selling point that many cameras do not offer. Also -- the 6K Pro can use CFAST instead of USB-C for storage if someone wanted to throw the camera on a gimbal without having to worry about an externally mounted SSD.
I have both A74 and 6K Pro, and would love to get rid of 6K Pro and EF lensens. Just cannot get as good color from Sony, especially if WB is slighly off. Also like 6K Pro's bright/large screen and internal ND filters.
Same exact situation here.. I want to switch to Sony but the small screen kills me from being spoiled with the BM. And I still can’t get the color balance on my a7iv right.. skin has a pink or soft orange hue every time.
I am honestly so sick of hearing all the whinning from the small-handed, I want everything to be easy and convenient type of photographers and videographers! Geeez is there any skill left in these crafts anymore? Is tech the new creativity? Are you seriously claiming that a T5 SSD is too bulky to keep up with? I would lose an SD card, way before I would ever misplace an SSD! I have the sony and the BMPCC lines and I completely understand that autofocus is not a cinema camera thing. Turn the fricking Dial/ring and obtain the proper fucus! Simply put if the cameras are doing all of the work what are you there for? What make you so unique? The way you point the camera? because it seems as if that's all some of you are doing. Lastly, no I am not the best cinematographer or photographer but I am willing to sharpen my craft through hard work with a decent-sized camera made for men with normal-sized hands that can lift heavy objects like a 7 lbs camera rig. Look at me complaining about the people that are complaining! LMAO
I totally get what ur saying man! I did complain a lot about convenience, let’s be real 😂 I did not phrase the T5 comment the way I intended. I meant that its bigger than an SD card. My bad. I LOVE having big cinema rigs so much! I’ve used them for almost a decade and still use them on a daily basis. As I probably should have worded, because I do more social media stuff now, auto focus and a lightweight portable Sony camera is better for the fast paced environment of social media content creation. And some of my favorite cameras to use are old film cameras that make you do all the work, i do see all these fancy cameras making us lose sight of the art behind the camera. Anyway, thanks for watching 🥲
Let’s be real, it’s now 2023 we have touch focus and the most reliable autofocus technology why would you still insist on pulling focus and constantly worry if your footage are oof.
@@jdc2126 that’s like asking why paint if you can just tell AI what you want and it will create it. It’s called a craft because you have to start from bothering and craft build/ structure/ sharpen your way to something great. What are you willing to work for sir?
@@TheFalaah I get it, it’s been a standard set by Hollywood, but as technology gets more advanced, it become obvious, we now have a choice. if you’re not filming a high budget film, why bother with hiring a focus puller or carrying 100lbs worth of equipments? There are those of us that prefer right of the box cinema camera and those of us who carry tons of equipments and in the end the one carrying less equipments results in just as good as the one who broke their back. Those are the people that hates auto focus, stabilizers etc. because hey label themselves as a real filmmakers, give me a break! I mean no one is stopping you from what you prefer. @@TheFalaah that's a silly comparison. Someone who worked with film could say the same about you. You now have digi cards, and pretty much unlimited takes, where as before you had to really think and plan every shot as film stock was expensive and hard to use. So that person would say you are being 'lazy' and not a real filmmaker. These comparisons sound snobby. I filmed a doc for tv before, I aint the best, at all, I am ave at best, but the camera was hard to use. Did things being harder 'perfect my craft?" no. It just made things more stressful and took time from things like the story. Both are good cameras, I have a BM but people here acting like they some high end directors or cine guys is hilarious. BM takes time, and you need everything controlled. It is a very good cam. So is the sony fx30. Ultimately, starting out, and pretty sure 99% people here, you dont have the budget or you will never get to that level. So the camera, actually doesn't really matter that much, it does to a degree. Has to look good, but doesnt need to look amazing, since if anything else is lacking, guess what, it wont be good overall. Who cares if your image is good, but the whole thing sucks? Same thing, if amazing story, but image sucks, it is distracting. It's balance. But most ppl here acting all snobby and looking down at others, when in reality they probably have not done much.

Think everyone is missing the point of the video being the 'Best budget CINEMA Camera', in terms of cinema the BM is the winner by 100 miles...but in terms of simple content creation the FX30 wins any day
The video cover says “old”. The bmpcc 6k pro is old as a Lamborghini diablo against a “new” Toyota yaris like the fx30…I’ve rent both several times. No match.
I gave up on the comparison when you said that it was hard to keep track of SSD cards. Seriously? Buy yourself a label gun. You don't even mention the CFAST option which give you high speed internal storage without the need to rig up an SSD. Blackmagic gives you multiple storage options that Sony doesn't. Your size comparison is also off. Sony systems have a tiny body but their lenses are huge and too expensive. The operating system on Blackmagic is the best in the industry. The large tilt screen means you don't need to spend more for an external monitor. There's built-in ND. And you have an inexpensive EVF option. Plus full BRAW recording for the best footage possible. If continuous autofocus is your only priority then sure, don't use Blackmagic. But for everything else...

I love the FX3 but hate its clumsy UI with a passion. It feels like it's designed by Japanese engineers who have zero idea of how people actually use cameras. The Blackmagic UI on the other side is simple, without clutter, with all the needed functions one or two taps away.
PLEASE don't hold that mic. Assuming it's an NTG, the proximity effect makes it incredibly difficult to listen to on studio monitors/any speakers with good bass replication. It's designed to have SOME air between your source and the capsule or it sounds like you are talking inside my head through a sub. Good video aside from that. Cheers.

It took me about six months to really get used to it but once I did, it was totally worth the learning curve in my opinion. (But I am a colorist at heart) But, if you’re just looking for a B-Cam, I think that the Sigma is a great option.

This truly is the golden age of filmmaking where there's so many AMAZING cameras from any company out there.
Sony - Lighter, Auto focus, way better battery, smaller, ready out the box, image stabilized, adjustable monitor, 10bit codec, external pro res & pro res RAW w/ Atomos Ninja V/V+ BUT RAW CROPS 😭, very small screen (coming from bm cams), does not take SSDs, cfast cards are EXPENSIVE BMPCC4K/6K - Better image quality, better colour science, internal 12bit codec, internal RAW codec, anamorphic desqueeze monitoring AND BAKED IN, comes with da vinci studio (new), false colour, BMPCC4K is CHEAP used, mini xlr ports for audio, takes SSDs, bigger/heavier body, bigger screen, fixed screen 😭, battery sucks nuggets, needs a cage (imo) BMPCC work arounds - rig your camera out, more weight = less shakes, get an external monitor, buy more batteries (they're fairly "cheap"), learn manual focus (auto focus usually isn't used in professional cinematography) For me personally I want the best image quality justifiable. I don't mind working a tiny bit harder to get a better image that can't be replicated in post. Black Magic has something that can't be replicated in post, sorry not sorry lol! You can run and gun with BMPCC as well it just takes a little more effort and a little more time. Every camera brand is so good now, almost any other camera will get you 85% of the way there, but once you reach that 85% the last 15% becomes 100% of what your chasing. And if you want it you won't be able to get it in another camera. So if you do any kind of cinematography go BM but if you don't do any cinematography or aren't looking for the best image quality/most filmic look then Sony all the way. Your life will be easier fs! Hope this helped, congrats on reaching the end, cheers x
Very good points here. My first camera was a GH5 and then moved on to the GH6. The limitations of these two cameras being almost unusable in low light and useless AF. But it's exactly these two limitations which made me into a better filmmaker. I had to learn a lot about lighting techniques and how to pull focus. Most of my filmmaker friends have been shooting on Sony's and Canon's since day one and lack knowledge in both these areas. No matter how good of a filmmaker you might be, if you get booked on a professional set and you tell them you don't use manual focus because running the camera on Auto is how you film stuff, you won't make it on the final roster.
I would get an panasonic gh6 5.7 k 60, no crop in 4k120 and much better image quality than sony in 4k120 t. Fx30 is like a normal kamera minus the evf and the foto capabilities. It clearly is not a cinema camery. Gh6 is best of both worlds.

@@nyambe if by FF you mean full frame. It's completely overrated. We as a community need to stop associating great images with full frame.
@@BryanKeithPhoto Exactly. Super 35 has been used on hundreds of award-winning films from Hollywood and beyond. Full-frame is a photography standard that's only one way to approach video.
No auto focus
@@BryanKeithPhoto lol no. there's a difference especially when it comes to more pro work
Very good video.
Hi Jason, I have the same question. What did you end up doing?
Fx30 with the the xlr handles you can just plug the mics into the camera and separate audio for editing later
The fx30 autofocus and versatility is what grabs me. Bare bones you can film and be discreet in a run and gun situations. Plus easy to put it on a gimbal… but would be mighty nice if they
would’ve thrown in an internal electronic ND filter.
For short films (cinema) and musical videoclips in pretty low light conditions, at a high production pace, lots of action and camera travelling going on, my guess is you do recommend the FX, right?
Top job, keep it up!
just a heads up, the audio sounds very high on the low end and distorts a little in my headphones making it alittle uncomfortable to listen, but im holding on 😅
Is the Blackmagic 4k still relative as an interview camera and a6700 filming at 24 p a good choice for run and gun?
As a Sony guy, I would love to have a Pocket 6k all rigged out for “big commercial sets.” But anytime I’m doing that level of work I’m renting, and if I’m renting, I’m getting something of a way higher caliber than the pocket 6k.
Well said 👏
I have the fx3, miss the ND filters. But as for the menu, I program what I adjust normally in the fn menu. I’ve also found that auto focus is much better than my manual focus on the ronin gimbal.
@1:40 You can film in lower resolutions without cropping in on the sensor on the 6k.
only when shooting prores
But the AF in FX30 is so reliable when you need it! It’s kinda unbelievable.
YES it is! 👌

A6700 i bought it for both photos and videos
add a monitor, mount, hdmi cable and batteries to the fx30. no way you are shooting anything critical with this tiny screen!
True!
I have the 6kpro and I’m selling because it’s chunky and there are times where rigging the much lighter camera would be nice. The one caveat is braw is amazing to edit.
BMPCC good for podcast and other controlled environments
FX30 more outside shoots maybe run and gun for weddings and such
I think a fairer sharpness comparison would've been with the same exact lens. There are certainly ways to use the EF on the Sony.
@@serj112 Distance to the sensor is a huge factor in image quality. That is why you can have $400 very sharp lenses with mirrorless.
Great explanation. keep up the good work bro

The auto focus of the fx30 makes it better, shooting music videos with the bmpcc 4k was a long process. The fx30 makes it easy almost magical to get such high quality footage with a monster auto focus.
Night and day, the bm4k also needs a lot more light, has no IBIS, its harder to balance on a gimbal. Did you get the FX30?

Trying to decide to switch/sell my 6K Pro only because of weight and lack of sensor stabilization. Auto focus is whatever, though would be terrible for vlogging (but good luck doing that with heavy glass and a rig on the 6k pro lol)
that is what Sony wants
6k pro is not designed for blogging so if that's what someone needs then it should never have been a consideration.

A separate charger Is great, but you can also use the USB-C port on the FX30 with the battery in it.
Sir which camera should I purchase for film making like feature film and music video album ?
From the choices in this video ID probably choose the 6K Pro 👍👍
The 6K Pro is superior, but without auto focus, these are two different cameras depending on time. Everything about BM camera is time consuming.
I’ve questioned that aswell! DCI was my go to with the Bmpcc 4K

I actually made them myself! 👍👍👍
How can you select the entire sensor for 4k? I've never seen that on my 6K Pro, only on the URSA Mini Pro

I have both A74 and 6K Pro, and would love to get rid of 6K Pro and EF lensens. Just cannot get as good color from Sony, especially if WB is slighly off. Also like 6K Pro's bright/large screen and internal ND filters.
Those are definitely factors to consider if switching! I thought all those same things!
Same exact situation here.. I want to switch to Sony but the small screen kills me from being spoiled with the BM. And I still can’t get the color balance on my a7iv right.. skin has a pink or soft orange hue every time.
For vlogging and RUclips content the FX30 is the way to go, for profesional work and documentary BMPCC 4K is the correct choice.
BMPCC is not for documentary. Fx30 is the best for it purpose.
Like the saying goes “ Work smarter not harder”

There's a $1000 difference in price. Not much comparison when one camera costs 60% more.
Imo get a fx30 to pair with my bm haha
That’s big brain right there
The video cover says “old”. The bmpcc 6k pro is old as a Lamborghini diablo against a “new” Toyota yaris like the fx30…I’ve rent both several times. No match.
6k pro only crops in 4k if you shoot braw. Pro res doesn’t

Woah woah woah bro. We know 🤪
BRAW and BM Gen 5 color science is so damn nice though. Sony's color science is still a little off in terms of color grading for me, but no matter what, you're going to get an amazing image from either camera. This truly is the golden age of filmmaking where there's so many AMAZING cameras from any company out there.
Sony - Lighter, Auto focus, way better battery, smaller, ready out the box, image stabilized, adjustable monitor, 10bit codec, external pro res & pro res RAW w/ Atomos Ninja V/V+ BUT RAW CROPS 😭, very small screen (coming from bm cams), does not take SSDs, cfast cards are EXPENSIVE
BMPCC4K/6K - Better image quality, better colour science, internal 12bit codec, internal RAW codec, anamorphic desqueeze monitoring AND BAKED IN, comes with da vinci studio (new), false colour, BMPCC4K is CHEAP used, mini xlr ports for audio, takes SSDs, bigger/heavier body, bigger screen, fixed screen 😭, battery sucks nuggets, needs a cage (imo)
BMPCC work arounds - rig your camera out, more weight = less shakes, get an external monitor, buy more batteries (they're fairly "cheap"), learn manual focus (auto focus usually isn't used in professional cinematography)
For me personally I want the best image quality justifiable.
If you’re going there why not just use your iPhone? With built in lenses it’s better based on what you said matters to you.
And the correct answer is fujifilm xh2 or xh2S.
