I have had the exact same machine with the same configuration including the mobile base for over 9 years. It is VERY accurate and has plenty of power. The sheering action makes for an incredible finish. I highly recommend it. NICE review!
Thanks for your review Guy. Your review single-handedly helped me make my purchasing decision.
I upgraded from separate jointer and planer to a 16" Euro-style machine like this one (not the same brand). It took a little bit of thinking up-front to batch my work better (do all jointing and then all planing for a project), but once I did that, everything was so much nicer.
Also, these machines are a LOT quieter than the typical lunchbox planer. I had a DW735 and it was about the loudest thing I'd ever heard, even with a Shelix on it.
These combo machines still see a lot of community resistance because of how different they are, but they really are nice.
Great video Guy, you do a great job concisely explaining the feature. With a small shop like yours, this is DEFINITELY a machine a need.
Thanks buddy! It fits in very well for the size shop I have, and have gotten used to how it fits in my work flow.
Nice job. You explained everything clearly...now I need to go buy one of these!
Great presentation! I enjoyed the brevity and preciseness. Keep up the excellent work
Really great review. Very concise and clear. You got me over the line too. Thanks a million.
Very helpful review. I'm considering this machine to replace my Powermatic 6" jointer and Jet 15" planer, both with helical heads. You answered a lot of my questions, and I appreciate your comments about the frustration of truing up the jointer beds.
Glad it was helpful!
Guy it would really be great if you did a follow up video about how this machine is working out for you all this time later..
Terrific video Guy, thank you. Makes me want one!
Thanks Guy! Really appreciate the update on this machine.
Thanks Kreg!
I have the same machine and it's fantastic....I've worked it hard, and it's been flawless.
So far so good for me also! Easy to change over and works exactly like it's supposed to.
Great review, thank you for posting!
That's an impressive beast. Thanks for providing your thoughts!
Thanks for watching!
Great review and demo, I’m still trying to decide on the Jet or the Rikon, very high price tag on them with the helical heads but I don’t like the straight knife models.
the angled teeth on the cutter head is a great design! i can’t help but think the angle on those teeth mimics a hand plane when it’s used at an angle. really impressed with these crucial details!
That's exactly how they operate.
I'm apparently late to the party, but that is a great review. I didn't realize JET even made these. Definitely on my radar now.
They've made them for a long time. They've never gotten very good feedback on average from buyers and the price has doubled over the last decade, so they usually get passed over for something like a hammer combo machine. Jet has decent quality control, but they do make some duds. I had a bandsaw (JWBS-18X) from them that was a hundredth out of round on the wheels, which sounds like no big deal, but leaves deep striations on anything that it cuts. That's how out of round it was on the castings, not the tires. maybe it could've been fixed with layers of duct tape - I sold it instead and took a great loss finding a buyer who didn't care about its cut quality problems.
I have this same machine. I had to spend about an hour coplaning the beds. I like the euro guard better than the more common pork chop guard. Being able to see more of the working piece to me is a hige advantage.
Great review. Clear, straight forward (no distracting background music-thank you). What about micro adjusting the planer?- Hammer has a micro dial...
Thanks for the review as it is very timely for me. I just moved to a smaller shop and my Powermatic 15in planer with insert cutters and my MM FSB 35 jointer/planer (the planer side of the machine is crap design) with blades takes up a bit of real estate and have been thinking of options. i have also installed the Jet jointer fence that I was able to order online to my jointer and covers the 350 mm width just fine and i like it over a large pork chop cover that was shop made when I bought the machine.
Thanks Matt!
Great review. Thank you.
Thank you Guy for the review. As a result, I just picked mine up and actually fired it up today. I'm still smiling lol. I did have one question, do you know if Jet, or anyone for that matter, makes any extension wings for the jointer bed? I have some 8' 8/4 white oak to run through it and am going to use some roller stands however, I've seen extension wings for the Hammer version of this machine and thought they would be handy. Thanks again!
I have one and I like it a lot.
GREAT review. Thanks!!
With all of these new machines, soon you'll be able to upload a new video every couple of days... I'm sure I could if I had those nice machines :>). Thanks for the review, Guy.
HaHa. Thanks Steve!
Nice machine. Would be nice in my 2 car garage shop. Thanks for the review Guy
Thanks! I am in a 2 car garage also, that why this machine makes sense for me.
Very good machine, Guy. Enjoy it!
Thanks Roman!
Very nice machine, sir!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
My pleasure!
That's a nice combo machine..they made everything pretty convenient..jet is an awesome brand have their mortise machine and a.f.s. the oscillating .sander is next on my list. One these days I'll get this but the basement makes it tough. Lol good review
Thanks Joe!
Really cool Guy, thanks for the info! 👍👊
Thanks Fred!
Thanks Guy. Definitely under consideration.
Thanks for watching Jeff!
It sure is a great machine. You are right in that dialing it in is a pain in the ass and will take some time. But, once it's dialed in, it's held the settings and is a great machine. I cant wait to upgrade to the helical head on mine.
Thanks Sean! I am very happy with the machine overall.
Thank you for the review. What digital readout did you use?
I'm looking at getting a combo machine in the future, and this looks like a winner.
I've been very happy with it or 3 month or so I've used it.
Check the amazon reviews for the same machine before jumping. 3.3 stars is unusually low for anything. I remember when they first came out and they have problems (that hopefully have been solved) and didn't sell well at about $1800. That was somewhere around 2008 or so, I remember seeing them at IWF - powermatic and Jet were just then embarking on a stiff price increase strategy due to economic weakness and currency (as well as rising overseas costs). It looks like they continued to carry it out!!
Nice video - thank you! How did you add the digital read out (how to and perhaps even brand etc ;0) ) Oh...and how do you set it up correctly (coplanar and 90 degr) ??
Thanks for the explanations, my question is how do you slow down the infeed rate to obtain a better finish?
Thanks for the video, I have a 10" version of the Jet with an after market helical head fitted. Apart from size there are a couple of small differences. I am still trying to adjust the tables to perfect coplanar and it is very frustrating with lots of action with straight edges, feeler gauges and lots bad language. You mention that the motor is 240volt. I am located in Australia where we are on 240 volt 50 Hz, which country are you in that uses 240 volt? All the best
Great video. Question: when in planer mode, do you need to lock it down every time you adjust the thickness? That could become annoying.
Great video. Just began using my JJP-12. Which Wixey digital gauge did you use and was it difficult to install. Sorry for the late question, just saw this video.
Hi Guy great video . My question is does the fence stay Ridgid and doesn't move when you make repetitive passes. A lot of other machines I have seen when you lock them into place the still have movement. Thanks
Nice video. What digital meter did you add for the planer? Thanks!
Thanks Guy. I’ve been considering a jointer planer combo. My shop is only 16x32 and the 15 inch planer and 8 inch jointer seem to be eating more than their fair share of the floor space. I’ll definitely take a good long hard look at this machine now.
Thanks for watching!
I remember when Jet couldn't make two of any model with interchangeable parts. They've come a long way in the last 40 years!
Absolutely!
Hi Guy, great video. I have the same machine but am having trouble getting the Jointer set up properly. I cannot find anyone that can explain the set up for this jointer. I have spent all day trying to get the table and head set up properly, could you please do a video on the set up? Much appreciated. You'd think JET would have some sort of video showing the procedure to fine tune the machine.
Thanks,
Frustrated Terry from Australia.
I to have the same joiner and love it! I want to upgrade to the button inserts as mine still have the knives. I can't find any instructions on how to replace the cutter head on this machine. Do you have any resources that shows step by step instructions ? Love your videos and the way you explain each detail on your projects.
Thanks, Jim
Thanks Jim. I really don't know of any step by step material out there for this particular machine. I am pretty sure Shelix ships instructions with their heads though.
Hi.
Hope you are doing well .
Is there any type of setting on the helical blade like the one that we normally do when we change blades on normal planer blade
Please share how you added the Digital read out to set the depth of the planer.
Looks fantastic!
Thanks! I am really happy with it.
Hey Guy! Are you still happy with this Jointer/Planer? Any new suggestions / gripes / tweaks?
Great job! What price for this machine?
Great presentation, obviously you weren’t endorsed by jet and I appreciate your unbiased opinion. Have fun building 👍
I appreciate that!
Hay Guy, I recently bought the same Jet planer/jointer....and too like it a lot! Did you make the finer adjustments based on the Jet manual or elsewhere? Thanks. Good vid.
Hey Tom, I actually read the manual. Weird, right?
have you had any issues with the beds going out of alignment?
Are you using the saw stop mobile base? If so which one?
What did you use for the mobile base?
Is it possible to remove the jointer beds to move this unit into my basement workshop?
Hey Guy, I gotta ask, as a fellow JJP12-HH owner. When your machine first arrive, how did you ensure that the outfeed table is parallel with the cutterhead given that its helical? I have found the manual quite lacking for the helical head version. A phone call to Jet and thet instructed me that the cutters should barely touch a flat board. What did you use to reference it?
How's it holding up Guy ?
Does this come fully assembled? And if it does, doest it break down?
I just got this machine and came to find out the manual calls for a 30 amp breaker? Is that what you use?
Hi Guy, I too have the same Jointer/Planer and really like it. What I don’t like is the rough height adjustment scale. What kind of digital set up did you use on yours?
Thanks Lowell
Hey Lowell, I have the Wixey DRO on the machine.
NO snipe? I hate how much snipe the DeWalt 13" planer leaves, regardless of setup/tweaking. Any way to get a esp. good deal better than Amazon? ( can send info via my website if you prefer musicbymark.net ) thanks for the review!
Hey Guy, how long of a board can you joint on this and do the jointer tables stay calibrated?
Snipe does not have to do with the quality of the machine entirely, it depends on the factory adjustments or owner adjustments in relations of the cutterhead to the table' Also it depends on how warped the board is.
Thanks for the review. I was looking at the grizzly but it is 5hp and I don’t have a power supply for that in my shop which is in an otherwise finished basement and would require too much to upgrade to 30A circuit. The fence on the Jet looks a little on the cheap side. Is it just stamped steel? Also the way it slides looks like saw dust could get underneath the slides and throw it out of square?
This Jet machine is also a 230V 30A machine, so would require new wiring for you. The fence is extruded aluminum.
It appears that switching to Jointer mode requires lowering the planer table down to a specific level? I'm researching this machine as there's one for sale on Craiglist...not being able to set and leave a planer setting or even having to crank it so low to switch every time has me thinking twice.
Muito boa essa máquina !
I can always count on you to have the high quality tools! I recently put a shelix cutter head in my DeWalt DW735. Its a vast improvement over the original 3 blade straight cutter head it came with, however, I do notice a slight scalloping effect that is parallel with the long edge of the board. Does your jet have any similar issue? I'd love to have all those beautiful, heavy machines you have but my shop is in the basement and the only access is down some stairs. Oh well, I make do ; ). Thanks for your video, always entertaining and informative!
I would call Shelix. I just got off the phone with them about my Shelix cutter and they are very helpful' I have been getting snipe.
Thanks. Will do.
There is going to be scalloping on any helical head machine. This one has it also, but normal sanding gets rid of it very easily.
Thanks for the reply Guy!
Sweet video. Guy, you're not spooked with gloves on the jointer?
Thanks Joe. Not at all. It's easier for me to "grip" the board when I am face jointing with this style cutter guard. I have worn gloves on and off for years.
When I purchased mine several years ago it was cheaper to buy a machine with knives & replace the head with a BIRD head. Great machine.
Hey guy - you haven’t had any snipe issues on the planer side with boards of longer length? Thinking of replacing my 6” powermatic and 745 with this
There can always be snipe, however it comes few and far between on this machine
Thanks Guy. If you had the room, would you prefer two dedicated machines or would you still get this one?
Hey Dan. Tough question. If I had the room, I would have a 16" jointer and a 20" planer. It's nice to dream isn't it? Since I don't have the room, this machine fits my needs perfectly.
I think we all dream about a 16” planer. Lol. Would be tough to get one of the down my basement steps.
Just cut a hole in the floor and lower it down. Tell your wife she gets new floors out of the deal! HaHa
What are your thoughts on this machine compared to the rikon model 25-210h. They seem to be identical except for a few minor details and the fit and finish. I'm set on this design. But I'd like to save the 1k difference in price if they are comparable.
Hey Matthew, I really am not familiar with the Rikon machine. I'm sure there are differences though.
I checked out an online video of the Rikon and was wondering as well. The Rikon has a different surface on the bed and appears to not be as smooth. I didn’t like the way it sounded when you moved wood across the surface.. Jet often has sales of 10-15% off. If you can get 500-600 off this one and get it down to 3600 or so, I’d rather have the JET
Guy, can you tell us which mobile base you used for this machine? Much thanks in advance! I noticed some others asked this but I didn’t see your reply.
It is from Bora/Portamate
Gloves when working on a machine with rotating toolheads? It is so cold in your woodshop? Sorry i am from Austria, and the first lesson which you learn is ... no gloves ... the second ... no gloves ...
So this is what my machine looked like when it was new.
Can you joint boards wider than 12”?
I haven't tried too, but I don't think you can on this model.
is this good for home use? or JJP-10BTOS?
I amvery happy with this machine. It does everything I need it to do
is it actually that quite?
It's very quite...
What price for this masin
Depends on where you buy it from
Good LORD - these machines came out around 2008 or so (i remember it) and were going to be sort of the saviour machine for space, and they were about $1700-$2000 back then.
Ten years on, and amazon lists the HH version at $4300, which is 2/3rds the cost of a Hammer A3-41. Since then, I've gone to working entirely by hand, but had a very mediocre jet bandsaw that I eventually sold at a great loss (JWBS-18X). They were increasing prices quickly back then through ownership changes (I guess someone has to pay back the loans) and grizzly was struggling with manufacturing costs at the same time.
But where they've (and powermatic) ended up on price makes no sense given they're all pacific rim machines and generally not as well designed or well regarded (3.3 out of 5 for this model on amazon, with plenty of detail as to why people didn't like them) as the euro machines, and resale on all of them is bad. If you get back half of new, you're lucky.
Nice video Guy, I enjoy them all. After buying the new machine you might be running a little short of money. If you would send me your address I will send you a new pair of gloves. Yours look a little worn. LOL Just kidding.
HaHa. And these are my good gloves!
Nice Machine however an Old model now . Made in China and available as Jet , Startrite , Barnado , and others .
I plan on getting one as soon as $4,000 miraculously falls into my lap
Yes, quality tools do have a cost associated with them.
Move the clock ahead to 2022 and you'll pay $1500+ more than that.
NEVER wear gloves when working with rotating tools / machines. If that cutterhead catches the glove ... by by hand.
holy fuck just get the gloves out to joint the board plaese take them of you gonna hurt yourself even worse if you get caught up in the maschine
Bud, you shouldn’t wear gloves ! 😮 If the tip of your finger touches the blade, the glove will pull your whole hand in !
