This is how other countries look like without being skewed by the Mercato projection. Love it!
The only real use that map has is for maritime navigation around the Atlantic Ocean and connecting seaways and other bodies of water.
@@keithjohnson3534 Yes, but any STRAIGHT LINE on Mercator shows the true direction. And the Transverse Mercator is used for small area topographic maps. Find a 1:63360 (1 inch to 1 mile) topo map of some area in Wisconsin (wipe off the cheese). The projection will say Transverse Mercator.
You can go learn what that means.
Indonesian President said that he once travelled by presidential plane from westernmost province (Aceh) to easternmost province (Papua) without layover due to curiosity, how wide our country is. He said it tooks 9,5 hours with 3 different time zones… Meanwhile, I once took flight from the capital Jakarta to Dubai, UAE was about 8 hours. Thats why as an Indonesian, who’s spending years here, I’ve never been to Papua 😅 The ticket price sometimes similar to Europe..

If you place Brazil horizontally, it is larger than the continental United States, Brazil has 8,516,000 km² and the United States 8,080,464.3 km2. Brazil only loses its territorial extension to the United States because of Alaska and Hawaii.
So alaska sao 8,5 vs 7,8 australia 7,6
In fact, the USA has 7.9 million km², but it is even larger than Australia
As it should.
Continental USA has 7,663,941.7 km², sometimes you guys forget places like Puerto Rico, Salmoa and Virgin Islands exists right?
But these are aliens territories not cficcial United States .
The five ones that surprised me more was: Indonesia that goes from one coast to other of the US, Vietnam that covers the entire eastern coast. Chile that just bugged the map 😆. Australia that covered almost everything of the US, and Brazil that usually looks smaller than many other coutries because of the mercator projection, and in this case is bigger than mainland US. It was also intrigin how big are countries like Japan, New Zealand, Bolivia, Colombia and Paraguay, as they always looks way smaller.
Vietnam is an kind of "asiatic Chile"...

What surprised me the most is that Saudi Arabia democratic republic of the Congo and Algeria are bigger than Mexico! What also shocked me is how small Uruguay in Paraguay are!

You know Sudan was very big but it lose 25 if it's size
It's interesting to see how the countries compare, but I also think it is interesting for foreigners to the US to see how big our country is. For some reason people come over and you will hear them talking about driving to texas and florida without any idea of the distance between the two, or florida to NY, or California to Texas without any idea of how big a span that is. You could spend your whole day driving in just Texas itself depending on where you are trying to go to and where you start from. Driving south to North california (like you are going to Oregon) are both more than a half days drive.

This video is very interesting bc it gives a fresh perspective of country land area compared to probably the most recognizable country border lines. I don't really care for Alaska or Hawaii bc they are not physically connected to the rest of the US and do little to give an overview the real thing. That said, this video could be even better if it showed state lines, so that we could more or less compare the smaller countires with US states. Of course, it would make harder to visualize the country territorial lines, but I mean, some faded state lines, just to hint at how much a country in Europe or Africa would compare to a State like Texas or Alabama for example. However, there was one time it did take me three days to get across Texas when I broke down in west Texas where there is very little traffic and nothing for many miles around. It took me two days just get help that far out in the wastelands. This was long before cell phones and GPS. I was stuck out there with no way to contact anyone and walking back to town across 30 miles of desert could have been a fatal mistake. A truck finally passed by me and helped me get moving again.

From Texas to North Dakota is 1 day drive. The half way point is Columbus, Nebraska.
Trust me. I drove it.
@@georgetello1247 - Texas is smaller than the Canadian provinces of Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Nunavit and the North West Territories and the same size as Alberta. A helluva drive between any of these too.
I feel like a lot of people underestimate the size of the US. I can only imagine what it's like to live in a tinny ass country and find out how big the US is.

This comparison doesn't even show the entire US , much less its territories. So if anything, all islands and other non-contiguous areas should be cut off from all the other countries shown for a more accurate comparison.
Cool comparison for someone who never looked at the map.
12:50 this is about how big Alaska by itself is. Crazy massive.
