I'm a watercolorist at heart, but recently I've been playing with gouache as well, and I enjoy it. I love the transparency of watercolor but gouache is definitely more forgiving of mistakes.
I really love all these educational videos on the differences between various art and office supplies. I also really love all the amazingly detailed guides on the JetPens blog. Thank you everyone, for all your great work!
I've been using gansai watercolors for a few years now and always wondered why they are so easy to lift when fixing mistakes; and this video has the answer :o I didn't know they were designed to use like that before.
Very informative, especially about poster colors!!! You don't get much information on how to use them properly in the west. Another confusing aspect is the paper that is used with it that I believe called TMK poster paper? It's very hard to find, but apparently many animators use it for backgrounds alongside The Nicker Poster colors. :0 Woud JetPens consider stocking the brushes and paper commonly used with Nicker Poster as well?
Holly Jolly I use poster colours quite a lot as a "gouache" experience. Gouache is quite expensive for the level of artistry I'm at right now. Anyway, I have found that any thick paper is good enough for poster colours. Whether textured or not, doesn't really matter, it's completely your choice whether you want a textured painting or not. The sketchbook papers we get here are more than enough to hold poster paints so I practice on those. It's not a very picky medium, from my experience. :)
This is so informative and I am so happy to learn about this. As I am not experienced for the mentioned art supplies (most familiar is water color, and poster color) After watched this video, I got more idea on this and really want to buy some to try.haha!
Omg.. thank youuu.. I interested in painting.. the first time i visit a gallery, i was mesmerising.. but because i never had experienced with art , and i have zero basic regarding art/ colours and i neither creative nor artistic.. i just ignore it.. now, during quarantine I bought a poster colours( I thought it was watercolour at first 😱🤭🤭) and start search yt about painting for beginners.. and omg, i never felt this good u know & really find this is so enjoyable.. I do realised poster colour & watercolour is different things, so that’s why I’m here.. Conclusion, i will settle for poster colour for now because of price & i still a beginner learning about all of thing.. wish me luck..
I've been thinking of using gouache for a while now, especially since it can be used with watercolors. Maybe when I have some extra spending money I'll consider getting some gouache to try out!
This was very helpful and informative! I not only go to your site to purchase supplies, but love how your videos that I always learn something from! Thanks!
I love watching this after coming home from my job :) first off.. those are lovely illustrations! I learned quite a lot this time! thank you so much! I'm currently using Gansai~ those particle images used really helped find out how each paint differs :)
I've wondered for a while what differentiates poster colors from watercolors and acrylic, and now I k ow. Thanks for making this video :D Also, I LOVE the paintings featured here, esp the one with the goat.
Great information 👍 I was unable to understand the difference in them but now its really clear. Thanks a lot . And all the paintings are awesome ❤️❤️❤️ but who is the artist ?
Hi! I'm actually the artist for the artwork at JetPens! I don't have a RUclips, but you can follow my work on my site or social media: www.electricabyss.com/illus_work.html
With all the different pictures, its kinda hard to tell the difference, maybe im the weird one but painting with different colours with the same pictures would sure help to tell. Other than that, i really adored your painting skills keep up the good work dear! :)
I’m here for that too..... I only have poster colors and not watercolors..... the only watercolors I saw in the place I live in, is the chalky one with circular pan.....
I’d like a vid which adds acrylic to these comparisons. Esp the difference between gouache and acrylics. BTW I like the painting when talking about poster paints. It’s pretty.
Does this mean that you could or should use lesser quality paper with poster colors because things like lightfastness and acid-free qualities don't matter? i.e. I'll be scanning the artwork. So long as the paper works with the paint, I think it makes monetary sense. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Hey I really like this channel and the videos are really informative! So could you make a video about the different types of nibs that would be super cool I think!
We actually have a bunch of videos on nibs! Here's one on manga nibs: ruclips.net/video/nxy5jDmSVPc/видео.html and here's one on calligraphy nibs: ruclips.net/video/p2NQi1XqF6o/видео.html
2 years ago, we have a task about making a movie poster out of poster colors. And i think after watching this video, i figured out how to use poster colors properly...
Hi! I'm actually the artist for the artwork at JetPens! I don't have a RUclips, but you can follow my work on my site or social media: www.electricabyss.com/illus_work.html
Hi there! It depends on how vivid you want your colors to be. Generally we'd recommend poster colors for a more lush, richly saturated painting, while watercolors tend to be slightly more diluted, unless you use extra pigmented watercolor paints.
Nice video. Educational. I've never heard about 'poster colours'. In our country we name them as type of 'tempera'. 'Egg tempera' is called just 'tempera' too. I prefer solid watercolours. Because I don't know how prevent paints in tubes from drying out. Paint having dryed on mouth, tube cover breaks TT_TT
Hi, could someone tell me if poster colors are the same as "temperas" (in spanish)? Because I've seen a lot of videos of artist making lovely paintings whit poster colors and I want to try it too, but it's like they don't exist here where I live. Sorry if I misspelled something and thank you. Amazing video by the way, super helpful 💗
I only know poster colour in my life...😂😂😂 Even i call poster colour is watercolour until i trying to find references for drawing, now i know it totally different..maybe because poster colour are more popular in my country and cheap😌😌😌
This is amazing! It would be lovely to have a section where you guys teach us different techniques that we can use on these paint, (i.e. like lifting, washed, etc) cause the painting looks amazing!
I'd never heard of gouache until very recently. When I first heard the name, I thought it was Goulash rather than Gouache. Searching for Goulash on youtube landed me at some cooking videos.
This is the most concise, no-nonsense, informative video on this subject I've ever seen
I'm a watercolorist at heart, but recently I've been playing with gouache as well, and I enjoy it. I love the transparency of watercolor but gouache is definitely more forgiving of mistakes.

Thank you so much for the kind words!
This is the first time I literally searched about poster colours. Thank you for the info. The paintings and the music felt magical too.
I've been using gansai watercolors for a few years now and always wondered why they are so easy to lift when fixing mistakes; and this video has the answer :o I didn't know they were designed to use like that before.

Thank you for your request! We will forward it to our buyers.
JetPens yes please stock the tmk muse paper it’s a key element to Ghibli style painting and completely unavailable in the US

Oh and I use mixed media brushes. They work just fine. 😊
This is so informative and I am so happy to learn about this.
As I am not experienced for the mentioned art supplies (most familiar is water color, and poster color)
After watched this video, I got more idea on this and really want to buy some to try.haha!
Now that i finally found the only information about poster color, i think my decision is finally clear.
I was just about to select a medium and your video showed up!!!! What a timing. Love you💙
Omg.. thank youuu..

Thank you! We have an in-house artist who does all of our artwork. :)

I used to paint with poster colours a lot during school days. Then i started using watercolours. But now i wanna buy poster paints again
That's really useful. I wonder if I can use poster color on outdoor comcrete wall of my house.
With all the different pictures, its kinda hard to tell the difference, maybe im the weird one but painting with different colours with the same pictures would sure help to tell. Other than that, i really adored your painting skills keep up the good work dear! :)
But I wanted to know how to get a watercolour effect with poster colours
Meha ARMY&MOA&STAY yes I also wanna know.!!!

Thank you very much for this lovely video.

Woah,new format?

You are a very very good in paintings
Oml I wish jetpens would open a branch in Canada! All their products are fairly priced, but it’s always the shipping fee that’s stopping me...
2 years ago, we have a task about making a movie poster out of poster colors. And i think after watching this video, i figured out how to use poster colors properly...
-Is this loss-
Thanks! I've been looking for a good video about this topic!

Hi! I'm actually the artist for the artwork at JetPens! I don't have a RUclips, but you can follow my work on my site or social media: www.electricabyss.com/illus_work.html
Thank you for sharing your site, Heidi. I'm in awe at all of your work!
Which is more preferable to make REALISTIC painting? Water color or poster color?
Hi there! It depends on how vivid you want your colors to be. Generally we'd recommend poster colors for a more lush, richly saturated painting, while watercolors tend to be slightly more diluted, unless you use extra pigmented watercolor paints.
How to get water color effect from water soluble poster colors?
Is it easier to buy gouache over poster colors? Cause they're more expensive than gouache here in my country for obvious reason they're imported.
@JETPENS Do you supply your stationery items to India??
We ship to India!
Interesting!
I love watercolours
Nice video. Educational. I've never heard about 'poster colours'. In our country we name them as type of 'tempera'. 'Egg tempera' is called just 'tempera' too.
I prefer solid watercolours. Because I don't know how prevent paints in tubes from drying out. Paint having dryed on mouth, tube cover breaks TT_TT
has anyone noticed that the pictures they're painting are the book 'HEIDI' illustration
Hi, could someone tell me if poster colors are the same as "temperas" (in spanish)? The Nicker Poster Colors are much nicer than traditional temperas. Tempera is a kind of poster paint, and it's usually made for kids.
JetPens oh, thank you very much for your attention! I'll search online then! You have a really beautiful youtube channel, thanks again 😊
Thank you for the kind words!
Ilysm

I'd never heard of gouache until very recently. When I first heard the name, I thought it was Goulash rather than Gouache. Searching for Goulash on youtube landed me at some cooking videos.
