It‘s actually normal for watercolour to be individually wrapped. The numbers are always on the side of the „thingy“ so you know which colour to buy when it is empty. Love, that you tried them. I love to paint with them although I cannot paint 😂
If you can put paint on paper, you can paint! I mean seriously, there’s a painting of a red square that sold for millions I believe. Your joy scribbles and paint splatters are certainly better art and they bring you joy! That’s the point of art ❤❤❤
Individually wrapping them also keeps them "clean" during shipping. No contamination of French ultramarine blue into your lemon yellow or stuff like that. Also, some colors dry out quicker and are prone to falling out of the pan.
i think the set in the video is quarterpans and not half pans? it says "mini pans" for the "cheaper" one and "half pan" for the one with 1,300 retail price
Try to spray the pallet with a spray bottle first to moisten them then wait about 5 minutes THEN use them. I learned that you actually need to activate them before you use them so try to do that then use them. It will improve the quality and how rich the colour is if you do this.
Not with these particular watercolours, I have purchased them myself. I spent over $165 on individual half pants, and I did everything I could and couldn’t activate 3/4 of the colours I ordered no matter what I did, and I am very familiar with water colours. I use them all the time including handmade. These were very poorly made when they dry if you can get any colour they come off like chalk on your finger. I didn’t give her a bad review though because she seems to have just started out. and is a small business and I don’t want to do any damage.

You don't need light paints, you can just dilute the dark ones. I'm just confused as to who the targeted person is. Because a beginner would certainly be okay with chalky paint but would probably not buy expensive hand made paints, while experienced persons are fine with spending more money on their supplies, they spend it on high quality products and not chalk. I do love that people make such things themselves, I'm just a little confused 😅
So many of the colors look like they’re just different values of the same hue. Also, they look so chalky I believe that’ll make it hard to rewet and probably not very transparent. Lastly, most or all of these trendy expensive handmade watercolors have no information whatsoever on pigments and lightfastness. Honestly, at the sale price of this set one could buy probably around 10-15 tubes of the very best professional watercolors in the market, that comes with probably four times, if not more, the amount of paint. I sell my original paintings, I can’t risk using a material with no lightfastness ratings, but I guess if I were a hobby watercolor paint with deep pockets, this might be nice to play with since with all these colors you don’t need to have any knowledge of color mixing. At the full price of those, I could maybe buy 30 tubes of Schimincke Super Granulation paints. That’s almost all of them (40). Now that I wouldn’t have a problem spending 😊
Yes great tip! I learned that from Rebel Unicorn Crafts channel n it's crazy the difference between using any watercolor pans dry vs letting them activate with water first a few minutes. SO much more pigmented!
It’s not the case. I never activate my handmade watercolors. I find good results with L’oeil watercolors. I just dip some water and the colors come off very easily. I think it depends on how much pigment they use and the binder. If the binder is bad, no matter how well you mull, the colors will not come off.
I saw the yellow of the house and knew it was Lilo and Nani's house. For someone who doesn't use watercolors often the picture turned out beautifully. As for the set, not the most accessible price upfront, but it looks like it would be a good investment overall.
as a watercolor artist these colors/packaging are absolutely beautiful but i cant see myself buying and using them. I never really understood why people need so many shades for watercolors when you can layer different colors and get really cool effects! I would definitely buy a smaller pack from this seller if they ever release one
Lol same, I was recently using a 24pc gansai tambi box, and the whole time I was constantly elbowing around because the palette was TOO BIG on my desk! 😆 And then I only use 3 or 4 colours anyway

I agree. Recently got into watercolor and initially purchasing too many colors set me back in learning to mix my own colors. I've got a more limited palette now and I think it's helped force me to learn the basics and my paintings look more cohesive overall.
For the glittery ones you want to add water and leave them at least a minute (longer is better) to get activated. That way you can get a really good solid glitter layer. I love that about my handmade Claire Chi Studio watercolours. My precious shinies! 🤩🤩🤩
Chloe!! Watercolor obsessed artist here! It's normal to have to spray (or drop water on) handmade watercolors several minutes before you use them and let it sit to get the true color payoff! Definitely try that with some of those fancy hard to work with shades! As someone who has a number of handmade watercolors from different people I've paid $5-11 per pan. So I think this is probably a really good deal if the quality is good! 'MCMarts' - is one of my favorite Etsy shops with handmade watercolors! Cristina is awesome and great at answering the questions I've had.

The big problems with this set can be found in the sentence "I used only three main pigments (red yellow blue) and black white pigments." 1. Watercolor artists generally look for single-pigment paints; they can mix them together themselves. Technically, this whole set is no more useful than buying 5 single-pigment paints and mixing them yourself when you need a color (if we ignore the sparkly/special-effect colors). 2. It looks like a lot of the paints contain white so that they'll be pastel. White should generally not be added to a watercolor paint, because you can make any color lighter by just diluting it more. 3. "red yellow blue" aren't pigments. Pigments are things like PB28 (Cobalt Blue) or PV23 (Winsor Violet). 4. There is no lightfastness information. If the "red" pigment here is PR83 (Alizarin Crimson), for example, none of the paints containing red (so, at least half the paints) will be lightfast, which means they'll fade after exposure to light. If I wanted to spend $300-600 on watercolors, I'd buy artist-grade paints made with only one known pigment, not a mixture of three unknown pigments.
I was planning on writing that myself, but you put it in words really well, I would also mention that handmade watercolor can smudge off like an eyeshadow if it's particulary chalky (I encountered that with a cadmium paint, which is poisonous in a dust form🙃) and also the fact that if you try mixing these shades you won't get clean colors, for example: instead of blue and yellow giving green you'll probably get somethig that looks like swamp water.
Also, an important thing that I forgot to mention is that the primary colors (basic colors for mixing) are not red, blue and yellow, they can't give you the full color spectrum! The actual primary colors are singlepigmented cyan, magenta and yellow, colors obtained from these are much more clean and vibrant.

@@zoebrooke5650 While you can mix two pigments to make another (so red and yellow to make orange,, etcc.) You wouldn't want to buy a paint made like that. Instead you want one made with a specific orange, green, purple, etc... pigment. You get much more range that way since you then have more pigments to work with to get the colors you want. A specific green pigment WILL look so much different from a green made by mixing a yellow and blue pigment. Depending on what you want and painting style this is very annoying because no matter what you do you'll never get that same green without the right pigment. The difference can be drastic or very subtle but either way it annoys me to not have that right pigment There are some exceptions where you might buy a paint made up of multiple pigments for the convenience if that mix is something you'll use a lot of. When I buy acrylics I always check the pigments listed on the paint. If it is made up of colors I already have then I just take a photo of the pigment list + paint color and make it myself. Rarely, the mixed pigment color will include a pigment I don't have and that isn't available to buy at the store. For those I just buy the mixed stuff because if I order paint online I always end up buying more paint than I planed to get since there are so many options you can't find in physical stores
I know of a half pan watercolour set on Etsy that is currently over $1300. Individually wrapped watercolour pans is normal both in handmade and large scale brands. As a watercolour artist the lack of pigment information on a set that cost that much would bug me a lot.

Especially if I want to sell these expensive paints I better know everything about them and be able to also tell that to people. Also you could advertise your paints with the information, especially if they are made very well??? So no information just reaks cheapness to me :(

While this set looks pretty, and handmade and it is made by a small business spending so much money on a product to discover it is only good for sketchbook work is an overkill on both the amount of colours and the price tag. I get it individually they aren’t expensive but as a whole it is very expensive.

Watching PearFleur mull her own paint, from pigments she gets from Choosing Keeping, I believe- you better believe hand-crafting paints is a time-consuming process... but it is *SO* watchable- it's mesmerising. Even though I really like water-colour painting, I would have a hard time justifying the cost of this set, though- even breaking down the individual price (it'd be like $7-800-odd Australian!) - still, I enjoyed watching you test it.
To be fair, the price for handmade watercolours is very expensive, I make my own watercolours by hand and they're expensive to make, the price she charges is very cheap, thank you for supporting small watercolor businesses
For the amount of effort and time put into that set, the price is actually so good. The box is stunning. I'm shook and haven't even seen them unwrapped yet
These blocks of color have no dividers to keep them from bleeding across into each other, and the wooden box will mold. This is not something I would buy even if the paints themselves are nice.
I mean technically it's actually a GREAT deal for handmade watercolours but I can't justify using SO MANY?! I actually got a 24 colour set as my first decent set and I barely use only half the shades omg haha. People are right, you don't really need a lot of shades with paint, just well chosen ones. Of course, you can have your extras that are special use such as certain granulating and shimmer fun colours but for main work one doesn't need a lot at all.

So, a few quick answers/notes for you (or anyone reading this) from someone who uses watercolor! First, they're individually numbered for the same reason copics are - you can order a single pan of color when they run out! Makes life a lot easier if you use one color a lot more than the others! Other people have already said this, but putting water on the colors you're going to use with an eye dropper (or a spray bottle if you're using all of them) will help activate them so that when you go in with a wet brush you get more pigment. And, lastly, let the glitter/metallic ones soak a little longer, and use them on a colored paper (grey, tan, or preferably black). While they should look shiny on any surface, they really stand out better against darker colors! Soo excited that you got this from a small business, it's so cute and I hope you'll experiment with it more!!
6:20 The good thing about it not being absolutely jammed packed is if you want to remove ones in the center, you can just shove the nearby ones to the side and remove. I'd be afraid of contaminating the nearby colors with water. Also, $2 per color is amazing. It took me years to figure out I'm not a 2D artist. I don't care for painting with any medium versus sculpting, crafting, making a UFO out of bamboo, mylar, and LEDs, things like that. Also, Lilo's house turned out awesome. I need to go back and watch that movie again.

the colors look very chalky, definitely something I wouldn't want in my watercolors. Can't tell from the video, but it seems that they'll crumble into pieces and will not dissolve in water. I do like the idea of glitter coat over the painting, I usually stay away from glitter and metallic watercolors, but really want to try, looks fun.
Yesterday i tried a mysterious palette i was given awhile ago by a family member and it was so powdery and not fully transparent because of it, i totally get it
Not only are those watercolours absolutely gorgeous, but I LOVE that you painted the house from my favourite movie! That movie is so amazing and one of the only movies to have used fully watercolour backgrounds in every scene. ❤And the message of family only makes it even better.

I've bought etsy small producer watercolor paints before. Honestly i prefer knowing the pigments used, the lightfastness rating, and the consistency (meaning the paint will be the same between batches) of artist quality paints. And though it may seem like a good deal for 300+ colors, many artists keep a small handful of pigments on their palette because we know with certainty what mixing the colors will do (goes back to knowing the pigments in the paints). Don't get me wrong, playing around with paints is super fun, but its expensive to do so.
same here. it's nice to know what goes into the paint. i did buy a mini set of 3 on etsy i'm sure is a pigment blend of whatever, but i love using them to make soft skin tones, but it seems the shop i bought it from reworked the colors so now once i run out of these i'm probably not buying the new version. maybe i should ask someone who knows a ton about pigments to see if they can dupe em. i now only really buy from the shops that list what pigments are used. Chloe is set for a long time now though XD.

I do paint quite a lot in watercolour and I have to say, for someone who doesn't use watercolours a lot, you did great job :) And also... 2 Dollars for handmade watercolours is a real bargain! Usually they're way more expensive.
I like the watercolour sets where the colours come as clip-in. I have one by the brand „Sonnet“ just 20 and a pan of white. For me that’s just fine since watercolour isn’t my main medium. But I like to team them up with ink or ballpoint pens from time to time. Something I would like about the box in the video - the colours are to close together very easy to „contaminate“ others around since you have to stir them up a bit. Not only neighbour colours but also the wood of the box. Might start to warp
Yep, it drives me insane that these do not have magnetic bottoms and are placed side by side like that. They will eventually get mixed up and contaminated with all neighboring colors like you said. And good point on the wooden box. These are watercolors. Means ALOT of water gets swooshed around and I feel like that's a moldy disaster waiting to happen when you store and use them in wood. They also do not list what preservative they are using to keep mold out of the paints. Are they using any? They are also poured, well, poorly, lol. At least some of them demonstrate massive air pockets below the surface. This is more than likely from only filling the pan up once ( or single pour ) and letting it dry. To maximize paint per pan you should do layers. The drying gives time for the water to evaporate from the paint leaving you with JUST product and more room to keep adding for a real FULL pan of paint. The air bubbles break my heart. I make paint myself ( I do not usually sell it ) and I spend so much time popping air bubbles over the course of a few hrs. to a day because it's annoying to add a few drops of water to a new pan of paint just to watch it almost immediately melt down to being half full because the air pocket was so big! I know, a comment reply that is way too long. Sorry!
eek i wouldn’t like that the pans don’t fit in the box right. i bought a handmade sparkle watercolour set from etsy pearlgrays and she made sure the boy fit the 30 paints really nice
Beautiful set, I have a tip, it’s best to spray or use a dropper on the paints letting them sit for a while before use especially the specialty pans. Have fun! I sure would! ❤
Hi Chloe, First of all great video as always. I think however that you didn't entirely do the handmade watercolours justice. I've bought a set from the same etsy seller and even though its a smaller set , they perform amazing. Seeing as you are not a watercolour artist i thought i jump into the comment section to give you a tip. Spraying the paint with water about 3 minutes before using hem and then again when you start painting and you will find picking up the pigment will go so much easier. I hope you will enjoy this amazing set of watercolours.
I've got a bunch of this kind of watercolor sets ( locally made here in the Philippines) and yes they are like chocolates so neatly wrapped in these cute little shiny paper 😁 and yes again, they are good quality! I have them in metallic, color shift ( which totally blew my mind) and the plain and neon one. I've had them for at least 2 years now and they are still nice to use. I wish I could find one here that sells that kinda size of watercolor set, that'll be a lot of fun! 🤗

I personally also love to outline my watercolor paintings with pen. I juat love how it makes the pieces feel "finished". It also helps me not over work my paintings which i struggle with after painting with acrylics for years. Your painting is beautiful!😊

Wow! I am not into the bells and whistles - glitters, metallics etc - when it comes to Watercolours, but the 170 standard watercolours looks like such a beautiful range of colours!
WOW! First, I’m subscribing to your channel, you’re entertaining and tell it like it is. I’m not a professional watercolor artist, maybe a bit more than a beginner. I love a gallo and have quite the collection which at times overwhelms me. I can’t even imagine a set of this size. Great price per pan, lovely box. Have fun with it!
What a gorgeous set of colours! And their box was as well. Breaking down the price the way you did shows that it's actually quite good value for what you get, as you rightfully said. Would this make you want to carry on with watercolours and experiment more with them? I used watercolour for my Sixth Form A-Level exam piece and you can get some really lovely tiny details with them, subtle shadows and just a great effect that you might not get with guache, oils or any other media.
I think it's an interesting Set for a certain niche audience of artists. It is a comfort palette with the large number of colours, and they only contain a few different pigments, It's easier to make colour-harmonious pictures with it than with several colours that are single pigment colours. I have the habit of picking out only a few colours for a painting and mixing many different ones with them. Depending on what is preferred, whether many colours with many different pigments or many from a few mixed with only three pigments plus white and black.

I am drooling over the set you got!! I've bought a VERY expensive watercolor set from Etsy as well. From a seller who goes by Jazper Stardust. I also love his handcarved paintbrushes, though they are insanely expensive. His 72 half pan set and a single brush cost me over $500!! And they didnt come in a beautiful box as yours did. But im in love with them!! (The ones i got AND the ones you got!)
You’re painting came out great! I’m pretty much a beginner/hobbyist at most art mediums. I have a lot of different mediums as I like making different kinds of art and sometimes I might want to paint, other times I might want to use colored pencils, etc.
Most high quality water colors have to be activated. Spray with a water bottle and wait 5 minutes for metallics do this process twice for best results. You can also ues this on cheap water colors to make them perform better! Understanding water ratio and hand weight also effects its but activating water colors is best practice
With the colours that don’t really show up, you need to let some water sit on top of them for a while, like 2 minutes to prep them, then you will see the pigment. Even with expensive professional watercolours you need to prep them for the pigment to show. Can you please try that and see if it changes the results.
Lilo & Stitch ❤ yuknow I never really realized the whole watercolor thing until I worked out what you were painting (I automatically thought you were going for Miyazaki) that’s so cool
I make my own watercolor paints, and I just have to question the pricing of these products. Especially with the mica and glitter based watercolor pans, or the "fancy colors". Mica and glitter can be extremely cheap. ( or if you get into the intense multichrome kind, they can get up there in price ) The mica and glitter are also extremely easy to combine with the watercolor base, only needing some good stirring and no mulling, they emulsify basically on their own. The matte pigments can get pricey if they are natural pigments but we do not know the pigments and normally they would be labeled as such when selling if they were, say lapis lazuli which leads me to think these could even be synthetic pigments, because it would make more sense to use these cheaper ones to mix and make new custom colors like they said they did. The pans themselves are poured poorly. You can see there are massive air bubbles below the surface that leads to being even LESS product in the already tiny pans. This is from poor technique. They are either single pouring, or not waiting long enough between layers for the previous layer to dry. ( it's important to let them fully dry, not just to prevent bubbles, but when the product dries down it also compacts pigment and shrinks. When you make several pours over several days ( or weeks ) you are maximizing product for the customer per pan. It just feels icky especially the non-sale price. (which proves its overpriced to begin with when its ALWAYS on sale) The only solace is that maybe they take alot of time mulling their pigments, which could be hours on end with A LOT of natural pigments out there. You're basically grinding rocks into gum arabic so fine that the paint flows. ( again if they are natural) And when you have paints that do not perform smoothly it is because they did not take the time to mull long enough, or use the right ratio of base to pigment. I do not sell my paints on Etsy, so I'm not saying this to be a hater. I just have been making them for years now and I just do not see the price matching the products. I guess having a pretty balsa wood container is nice, however wood and water over time do not work too well together. Hence why many watercolors, especially handmade come with magnets and a tin container.( also keeps the pans from sliding all over ) The risk for mold is pretty high in a wooden container. Also the fact that they are being used side by side like that makes my skin crawl. The risk of contaminating the colors are HIGH, if not inevitable like this.. Ugh. I hope you atleast LOVE them dearly, and I hope I am just plain wrong. I'm just sus on the price. It feels like taking advantage of gullible or people will well intentions. I really enjoyed your artwork, but in no way do I feel those watercolors were worth $300, much less $600! Personally, I absolutely expect professional-grade watercolors at that price. That is NOT a price for beginner paints, or even novice. I can buy the best of the best for $600 OR $300. Admittedly, I do love the wooden box they came in. That is lovely! 🥰
The best way to get depth in watercolour is by doing multiple washes of colour and letting that dry, for example, a dark blue wash over the areas you want to be shaded!
Oh, that looks amazing! I did this myself with my own bought pans. I took an empty carrier, measured the inside and made sure I had cardboard of that size. Then I used double sided tape (just strips) to paste the pans on. That way, you can easily remove them and you don't ruin the case. Downside: the tape sometimes lets go :P Must have been old tape.
Hullo Chloe, Your such an amazing person and Artist! This is a wonderful collection and not knowing pigment information would be my biggest concern. I would have set it up in more color families. Because this type of palette you will have bleed-over between color pans. You will need to pre-wet the shimmer and glittery paints if you want to get the most out of them. I would love to see you watercolor some of your Arthur the Bear pictures! Just bring them from your book and paint away! Well I am sure you have plenty of video ideas in the Que, I just wanted to say it out loud!
I saw a huge watercolor half pan set for over 5000 bucks…! By iuile watercolors… No relation to that store, but I’ve bought several times from them, individual half pans or small sets. Her prices are higher but the colors are pretty darn amazing. It’s normal for the watercolors to come individually wrapped, something that I both love and hate. It’s a bit of a chore to open them all up, especially when you’ve got such a huge set! But it’s also kinda a ritual that I enjoy… Like enjoying the new book smell sort of thing. Oh I love that it came with the number already on the side. Some that I buy from Etsy arent so I’ve got to label the pans myself. I would take really long to unwrap so many pans too, and arranging them… yeah that would take me forever!
That is a very beautiful box, and having to unwrap a million paint pans sounds like a joy for my kind of anticipation-drug. I do think it's a little funny that they are wrapped so carefully only for them to be stuck in a box with an open lid. Assuming it is an open lid, they are going to get so dusty so fast 😐 You did a fine job! They look a little like gouache.

i think the set in the video is quarterpans and not half pans? it says "mini pans" for the "cheaper" one and "half pan" for the one with 1,300 retail price
I believe the set she got with the tiny squares are .5ml sample pans , not a half pan which is 2ml, they're called 1/8th pans

Agree, surprising it was not more expensive.
Try to spray the pallet with a spray bottle first to moisten them then wait about 5 minutes THEN use them.
I learned that you actually need to activate them before you use them so try to do that then use them. It will improve the quality and how rich the colour is if you do this.
Not with these particular watercolours, I have purchased them myself. I spent over $165 on individual half pants, and I did everything I could and couldn’t activate 3/4 of the colours I ordered no matter what I did, and I am very familiar with water colours. I use them all the time including handmade. These were very poorly made when they dry if you can get any colour they come off like chalk on your finger. I didn’t give her a bad review though because she seems to have just started out. and is a small business and I don’t want to do any damage.

You don't need light paints, you can just dilute the dark ones. I'm just confused as to who the targeted person is. Because a beginner would certainly be okay with chalky paint but would probably not buy expensive hand made paints, while experienced persons are fine with spending more money on their supplies, they spend it on high quality products and not chalk. I do love that people make such things themselves, I'm just a little confused 😅
So many of the colors look like they’re just different values of the same hue. Also, they look so chalky I believe that’ll make it hard to rewet and probably not very transparent. Lastly, most or all of these trendy expensive handmade watercolors have no information whatsoever on pigments and lightfastness. Honestly, at the sale price of this set one could buy probably around 10-15 tubes of the very best professional watercolors in the market, that comes with probably four times, if not more, the amount of paint. I sell my original paintings, I can’t risk using a material with no lightfastness ratings, but I guess if I were a hobby watercolor paint with deep pockets, this might be nice to play with since with all these colors you don’t need to have any knowledge of color mixing. At the full price of those, I could maybe buy 30 tubes of Schimincke Super Granulation paints. That’s almost all of them (40). Now that I wouldn’t have a problem spending 😊
Yes great tip! I learned that from Rebel Unicorn Crafts channel n it's crazy the difference between using any watercolor pans dry vs letting them activate with water first a few minutes. SO much more pigmented!
It’s not the case. I never activate my handmade watercolors. I find good results with L’oeil watercolors. I just dip some water and the colors come off very easily. I think it depends on how much pigment they use and the binder. If the binder is bad, no matter how well you mull, the colors will not come off.
I saw the yellow of the house and knew it was Lilo and Nani's house. For someone who doesn't use watercolors often the picture turned out beautifully. As for the set, not the most accessible price upfront, but it looks like it would be a good investment overall.

as a watercolor artist these colors/packaging are absolutely beautiful but i cant see myself buying and using them. I never really understood why people need so many shades for watercolors when you can layer different colors and get really cool effects! I would definitely buy a smaller pack from this seller if they ever release one
Lol same, I was recently using a 24pc gansai tambi box, and the whole time I was constantly elbowing around because the palette was TOO BIG on my desk! 😆 And then I only use 3 or 4 colours anyway

I agree. Recently got into watercolor and initially purchasing too many colors set me back in learning to mix my own colors. I've got a more limited palette now and I think it's helped force me to learn the basics and my paintings look more cohesive overall.
For the glittery ones you want to add water and leave them at least a minute (longer is better) to get activated. That way you can get a really good solid glitter layer. I love that about my handmade Claire Chi Studio watercolours. My precious shinies! 🤩🤩🤩
Chloe!! Watercolor obsessed artist here! It's normal to have to spray (or drop water on) handmade watercolors several minutes before you use them and let it sit to get the true color payoff! Definitely try that with some of those fancy hard to work with shades!
As someone who has a number of handmade watercolors from different people I've paid $5-11 per pan. So I think this is probably a really good deal if the quality is good!

The big problems with this set can be found in the sentence "I used only three main pigments (red yellow blue) and black white pigments."
1. Watercolor artists generally look for single-pigment paints; they can mix them together themselves. Technically, this whole set is no more useful than buying 5 single-pigment paints and mixing them yourself when you need a color (if we ignore the sparkly/special-effect colors).
2. It looks like a lot of the paints contain white so that they'll be pastel. White should generally not be added to a watercolor paint, because you can make any color lighter by just diluting it more.
3. "red yellow blue" aren't pigments. Pigments are things like PB28 (Cobalt Blue) or PV23 (Winsor Violet).
4. There is no lightfastness information. If the "red" pigment here is PR83 (Alizarin Crimson), for example, none of the paints containing red (so, at least half the paints) will be lightfast, which means they'll fade after exposure to light.
If I wanted to spend $300-600 on watercolors, I'd buy artist-grade paints made with only one known pigment, not a mixture of three unknown pigments.
I was planning on writing that myself, but you put it in words really well, I would also mention that handmade watercolor can smudge off like an eyeshadow if it's particulary chalky (I encountered that with a cadmium paint, which is poisonous in a dust form🙃) and also the fact that if you try mixing these shades you won't get clean colors, for example: instead of blue and yellow giving green you'll probably get somethig that looks like swamp water.
Also, an important thing that I forgot to mention is that the primary colors (basic colors for mixing) are not red, blue and yellow, they can't give you the full color spectrum! The actual primary colors are singlepigmented cyan, magenta and yellow, colors obtained from these are much more clean and vibrant.
So then in those sets what would be the one pigment used? I’m genuinely curious because color theory is wild.

@@zoebrooke5650 While you can mix two pigments to make another (so red and yellow to make orange,, etcc.) You wouldn't want to buy a paint made like that. Instead you want one made with a specific orange, green, purple, etc... pigment. You get much more range that way since you then have more pigments to work with to get the colors you want.
A specific green pigment WILL look so much different from a green made by mixing a yellow and blue pigment. Depending on what you want and painting style this is very annoying because no matter what you do you'll never get that same green without the right pigment. The difference can be drastic or very subtle but either way it annoys me to not have that right pigment
There are some exceptions where you might buy a paint made up of multiple pigments for the convenience if that mix is something you'll use a lot of. When I buy acrylics I always check the pigments listed on the paint. If it is made up of colors I already have then I just take a photo of the pigment list + paint color and make it myself.
Rarely, the mixed pigment color will include a pigment I don't have and that isn't available to buy at the store. For those I just buy the mixed stuff because if I order paint online I always end up buying more paint than I planed to get since there are so many options you can't find in physical stores
I know of a half pan watercolour set on Etsy that is currently over $1300. Individually wrapped watercolour pans is normal both in handmade and large scale brands. As a watercolour artist the lack of pigment information on a set that cost that much would bug me a lot.

While this set looks pretty, and handmade and it is made by a small business spending so much money on a product to discover it is only good for sketchbook work is an overkill on both the amount of colours and the price tag. I get it individually they aren’t expensive but as a whole it is very expensive.

Watching PearFleur mull her own paint, from pigments she gets from Choosing Keeping, I believe- you better believe hand-crafting paints is a time-consuming process... but it is *SO* watchable- it's mesmerising.
Even though I really like water-colour painting, I would have a hard time justifying the cost of this set, though- even breaking down the individual price (it'd be like $7-800-odd Australian!) - still, I enjoyed watching you test it.
To be fair, the price for handmade watercolours is very expensive, I make my own watercolours by hand and they're expensive to make, the price she charges is very cheap, thank you for supporting small watercolor businesses

These blocks of color have no dividers to keep them from bleeding across into each other, and the wooden box will mold. This is not something I would buy even if the paints themselves are nice.

I mean technically it's actually a GREAT deal for handmade watercolours but I can't justify using SO MANY?! I actually got a 24 colour set as my first decent set and I barely use only half the shades omg haha. People are right, you don't really need a lot of shades with paint, just well chosen ones. Of course, you can have your extras that are special use such as certain granulating and shimmer fun colours but for main work one doesn't need a lot at all.

So, a few quick answers/notes for you (or anyone reading this) from someone who uses watercolor! First, they're individually numbered for the same reason copics are - you can order a single pan of color when they run out! Makes life a lot easier if you use one color a lot more than the others! Other people have already said this, but putting water on the colors you're going to use with an eye dropper (or a spray bottle if you're using all of them) will help activate them so that when you go in with a wet brush you get more pigment. And, lastly, let the glitter/metallic ones soak a little longer, and use them on a colored paper (grey, tan, or preferably black). While they should look shiny on any surface, they really stand out better against darker colors! Soo excited that you got this from a small business, it's so cute and I hope you'll experiment with it more!!
6:20 The good thing about it not being absolutely jammed packed is if you want to remove ones in the center, you can just shove the nearby ones to the side and remove. I'd be afraid of contaminating the nearby colors with water. Also, $2 per color is amazing. It took me years to figure out I'm not a 2D artist. I don't care for painting with any medium versus sculpting, crafting, making a UFO out of bamboo, mylar, and LEDs, things like that. Also, Lilo's house turned out awesome. I need to go back and watch that movie again.

the colors look very chalky, definitely something I wouldn't want in my watercolors. Can't tell from the video, but it seems that they'll crumble into pieces and will not dissolve in water. I do like the idea of glitter coat over the painting, I usually stay away from glitter and metallic watercolors, but really want to try, looks fun.

For the paints staying in place, you could just add some hot glue in the empty spaces or sticky tack.

Watercolor artist here! You would get much better results if you used 100 cotton paper.
I've bought etsy small producer watercolor paints before. Honestly i prefer knowing the pigments used, the lightfastness rating, and the consistency (meaning the paint will be the same between batches) of artist quality paints. And though it may seem like a good deal for 300+ colors, many artists keep a small handful of pigments on their palette because we know with certainty what mixing the colors will do (goes back to knowing the pigments in the paints). Don't get me wrong, playing around with paints is super fun, but its expensive to do so.
same here. it's nice to know what goes into the paint. i did buy a mini set of 3 on etsy i'm sure is a pigment blend of whatever, but i love using them to make soft skin tones, but it seems the shop i bought it from reworked the colors so now once i run out of these i'm probably not buying the new version. maybe i should ask someone who knows a ton about pigments to see if they can dupe em.
i now only really buy from the shops that list what pigments are used.

I do paint quite a lot in watercolour and I have to say, for someone who doesn't use watercolours a lot, you did great job :) And also... 2 Dollars for handmade watercolours is a real bargain! Usually they're way more expensive.
I like the watercolour sets where the colours come as clip-in. I have one by the brand „Sonnet“ just 20 and a pan of white. For me that’s just fine since watercolour isn’t my main medium. But I like to team them up with ink or ballpoint pens from time to time.
Something I would like about the box in the video - the colours are to close together very easy to „contaminate“ others around since you have to stir them up a bit. Not only neighbour colours but also the wood of the box. Might start to warp
Yep, it drives me insane that these do not have magnetic bottoms and are placed side by side like that. They will eventually get mixed up and contaminated with all neighboring colors like you said. And good point on the wooden box. These are watercolors. Means ALOT of water gets swooshed around and I feel like that's a moldy disaster waiting to happen when you store and use them in wood. They also do not list what preservative they are using to keep mold out of the paints. Are they using any? They are also poured, well, poorly, lol. At least some of them demonstrate massive air pockets below the surface. This is more than likely from only filling the pan up once ( or single pour ) and letting it dry. To maximize paint per pan you should do layers. The drying gives time for the water to evaporate from the paint leaving you with JUST product and more room to keep adding for a real FULL pan of paint. The air bubbles break my heart. I make paint myself ( I do not usually sell it ) and I spend so much time popping air bubbles over the course of a few hrs. to a day because it's annoying to add a few drops of water to a new pan of paint just to watch it almost immediately melt down to being half full because the air pocket was so big! I know, a comment reply that is way too long. Sorry!

Beautiful set, I have a tip, it’s best to spray or use a dropper on the paints letting them sit for a while before use especially the specialty pans. Have fun! I sure would! ❤

Hi Chloe, First of all great video as always. I think however that you didn't entirely do the handmade watercolours justice. I've bought a set from the same etsy seller and even though its a smaller set , they perform amazing. Seeing as you are not a watercolour artist i thought i jump into the comment section to give you a tip. Spraying the paint with water about 3 minutes before using hem and then again when you start painting and you will find picking up the pigment will go so much easier. I hope you will enjoy this amazing set of watercolours.
I've got a bunch of this kind of watercolor sets ( locally made here in the Philippines) and yes they are like chocolates so neatly wrapped in these cute little shiny paper 😁 and yes again, they are good quality! I have them in metallic, color shift ( which totally blew my mind) and the plain and neon one. I've had them for at least 2 years now and they are still nice to use. I wish I could find one here that sells that kinda size of watercolor set, that'll be a lot of fun! 🤗

I personally also love to outline my watercolor paintings with pen. I juat love how it makes the pieces feel "finished". It also helps me not over work my paintings which i struggle with after painting with acrylics for years. Your painting is beautiful!😊

Wow! I am not into the bells and whistles - glitters, metallics etc - when it comes to Watercolours, but the 170 standard watercolours looks like such a beautiful range of colours!
You can use a little blue tac to keep the pans from shifting around and its not permanent

WOW! First, I’m subscribing to your channel, you’re entertaining and tell it like it is. I’m not a professional watercolor artist, maybe a bit more than a beginner. I love a gallo and have quite the collection which at times overwhelms me. I can’t even imagine a set of this size. Great price per pan, lovely box. Have fun with it!
What a gorgeous set of colours! And their box was as well. Breaking down the price the way you did shows that it's actually quite good value for what you get, as you rightfully said. Would this make you want to carry on with watercolours and experiment more with them? I used watercolour for my Sixth Form A-Level exam piece and you can get some really lovely tiny details with them, subtle shadows and just a great effect that you might not get with guache, oils or any other media.
I think it's an interesting Set for a certain niche audience of artists.
It is a comfort palette with the large number of colours, and they only contain a few different pigments,
It's easier to make colour-harmonious pictures with it than with several colours that are single pigment colours.
I have the habit of picking out only a few colours for a painting and mixing many different ones with them.
Depending on what is preferred, whether many colours with many different pigments or many from a few mixed with only three pigments plus white and black.

I am drooling over the set you got!! I've bought a VERY expensive watercolor set from Etsy as well. From a seller who goes by Jazper Stardust. I also love his handcarved paintbrushes, though they are insanely expensive. His 72 half pan set and a single brush cost me over $500!! And they didnt come in a beautiful box as yours did. But im in love with them!! (The ones i got AND the ones you got!)

You’re painting came out great! I’m pretty much a beginner/hobbyist at most art mediums. I have a lot of different mediums as I like making different kinds of art and sometimes I might want to paint, other times I might want to use colored pencils, etc.
I do collage so I use lots of things together.

Most high quality water colors have to be activated. Spray with a water bottle and wait 5 minutes for metallics do this process twice for best results. You can also ues this on cheap water colors to make them perform better! Understanding water ratio and hand weight also effects its but activating water colors is best practice
With the colours that don’t really show up, you need to let some water sit on top of them for a while, like 2 minutes to prep them, then you will see the pigment. Even with expensive professional watercolours you need to prep them for the pigment to show. Can you please try that and see if it changes the results.

I make my own watercolor paints, and I just have to question the pricing of these products. Especially with the mica and glitter based watercolor pans, or the "fancy colors". Mica and glitter can be extremely cheap. ( or if you get into the intense multichrome kind, they can get up there in price ) The mica and glitter are also extremely easy to combine with the watercolor base, only needing some good stirring and no mulling, they emulsify basically on their own. The matte pigments can get pricey if they are natural pigments but we do not know the pigments and normally they would be labeled as such when selling if they were, say lapis lazuli which leads me to think these could even be synthetic pigments, because it would make more sense to use these cheaper ones to mix and make new custom colors like they said they did. The pans themselves are poured poorly. You can see there are massive air bubbles below the surface that leads to being even LESS product in the already tiny pans. This is from poor technique. They are either single pouring, or not waiting long enough between layers for the previous layer to dry. ( it's important to let them fully dry, not just to prevent bubbles, but when the product dries down it also compacts pigment and shrinks. When you make several pours over several days ( or weeks ) you are maximizing product for the customer per pan. It just feels icky especially the non-sale price. (which proves its overpriced to begin with when its ALWAYS on sale) The only solace is that maybe they take alot of time mulling their pigments, which could be hours on end with A LOT of natural pigments out there. You're basically grinding rocks into gum arabic so fine that the paint flows. ( again if they are natural) And when you have paints that do not perform smoothly it is because they did not take the time to mull long enough, or use the right ratio of base to pigment. I do not sell my paints on Etsy, so I'm not saying this to be a hater. I just have been making them for years now and I just do not see the price matching the products. I guess having a pretty balsa wood container is nice, however wood and water over time do not work too well together. Hence why many watercolors, especially handmade come with magnets and a tin container.( also keeps the pans from sliding all over ) The risk for mold is pretty high in a wooden container. Also the fact that they are being used side by side like that makes my skin crawl. The risk of contaminating the colors are HIGH, if not inevitable like this.. Ugh. I hope you atleast LOVE them dearly, and I hope I am just plain wrong. I'm just sus on the price. It feels like taking advantage of gullible or people will well intentions. I tend to find that handmade watercolour can take longer to activate especially bigger pigments like flakes.

I’ve never used individually wrapped water colors yet I’ve only used unwrapped water colors.
Would have never thought that somebody would be interested in such a large wathercolor set. I always used a set of 24 and mixed the new colors I wanted.
I really enjoyed your artwork, but in no way do I feel those watercolors were worth $300, much less $600!
Personally, I absolutely expect professional-grade watercolors at that price. That is NOT a price for beginner paints, or even novice. I can buy the best of the best for $600 OR $300.

The best way to get depth in watercolour is by doing multiple washes of colour and letting that dry, for example, a dark blue wash over the areas you want to be shaded!

Oh, that looks amazing! I did this myself with my own bought pans. I took an empty carrier, measured the inside and made sure I had cardboard of that size. Then I used double sided tape (just strips) to paste the pans on. That way, you can easily remove them and you don't ruin the case. Downside: the tape sometimes lets go :P Must have been old tape.
🎨👍❤ Heads up, try using the fluorescent and pearlescent, metalic, on dark paper, they will look completely different.
Hullo Chloe, Your such an amazing person and Artist! This is a wonderful collection and not knowing pigment information would be my biggest concern. I would have set it up in more color families. Because this type of palette you will have bleed-over between color pans. You will need to pre-wet the shimmer and glittery paints if you want to get the most out of them.
I would love to see you watercolor some of your Arthur the Bear pictures! Just bring them from your book and paint away!

I saw a huge watercolor half pan set for over 5000 bucks…! By iuile watercolors… No relation to that store, but I’ve bought several times from them, individual half pans or small sets. Her prices are higher but the colors are pretty darn amazing. It’s normal for the watercolors to come individually wrapped, something that I both love and hate. It’s a bit of a chore to open them all up, especially when you’ve got such a huge set! But it’s also kinda a ritual that I enjoy… Like enjoying the new book smell sort of thing. Oh I love that it came with the number already on the side. Some that I buy from Etsy arent so I’ve got to label the pans myself.
I would take really long to unwrap so many pans too, and arranging them… yeah that would take me forever!

That is a very beautiful box, and having to unwrap a million paint pans sounds like a joy for my kind of anticipation-drug. I do think it's a little funny that they are wrapped so carefully only for them to be stuck in a box with an open lid. Assuming it is an open lid, they are going to get so dusty so fast 😐 You did a fine job! They look a little like gouache.
