Wonderful, could listen to him talking cricket all day. Such a knowledgeable commentator & a damn fine player in an era when we frequently struggled. Excellent writer on the game too. Thanks Michael, you're a national treasure.
His the best/great players tend to get centuries at Lords comment knowing he never quite attained the feat embodies his unbelievable humility as a cricketer.
Absolute love Athers thoughts & memories on the game
Ayub Patel ji
I know you typed this some 3 years ago but I just watched that and came here to the comments to say the same thing. Although you put it way better than I would have. Thank you.
Top bloke, fantastic commentator and writer. There's that old saying that talent shouldnt be mistaken for character, but he has both in spades. Listening to Allan Donald talk about his respect for Atherton makes it clear how good he was, in the face of the golden age of bowling
I've met Michael at my local cricket club and he is a wonderful person to have a chat with about anything but mainly of cricket we spoke of the likes of Glenn McGrath giving him issues with his style of bowling and what he did to try and combat it a very humble man.
Mr. Atherton is probably the best ever analyst in cricket commentary I have ever heard.Thank you Sir for this fine experience in the Lord's.
Nah. Richie.
Mike Atherton is great but Richie and Mark Nicholas get the top spot for me.
Now some pagal come and say aakash chopra
His knock of 185 not out to save the test in South Africa is for me one of the top 10 innings of ALL TIME. He was a rock, sure watching Lara's swashbuckling innings were wonderful, Don Bradman, Viv Richards and those will always be held in higher regard for entertainment, but you should not underestimate the grit of this man, in one of the worst era's of English cricket, under massive scruntiy all the time by a press and public who were having to get used to losing, one of the best mentality cricket players that's ever opened. He was one stubborn Englishman.
I remember Lara's 501 against Durham in 1994. That was a memory to behold.
@Jason Jones I was thinking the same thing...
Mike Atherton is true Englishman ans a gentleman. He palyed the best cricket of them all and it was of a true sportsman. 🥇
Wtf are you on, guys a cheat no honour. Stfu
I remember Gooch's 333. What an innings that was. Botham was my childhood hero, but that innings from Gooch cemented my love for test cricket. I was in awe watching him, he just seemed to be unstoppable.
The dressing room looks more like the back-end of an ordinary department store ; but I suppose it's invested with the sweat and tears of more than a hundred years of joy and disappointment . The walls and furniture have been witness to all the greats of the game ; what dramas and passions might have been enacted in this haloed enclosure , if they could only talk . Atherton does a very dignified job of taking us behind the scenes ,no histrionics or personal glory reminiscing .Lords really carries the weight of it's history well . I haven't played in that league but what wouldn't I give to spend a few moments of contemplation there .
Tim Murtagh is now on the board (5-13 vs Eng). First Irishman on the test honours board.
That Gooch painting 😂
Brian Sergeant the irish still managed to mess up that series😂😂😂
@W S B who won the series ?
Woww...inside glimpse of the mecca of The Cricket! Hoping to see it someday in person! Long live the Lords!
I've always enjoyed watching Athers bat -- and commentate after he retired. The stats simply don't do the man justice. For the time, given how fragile his side's batting order was in the 90's, he was a critically important player and one of the better batsmen that England's produced.
at LORDS 1999 WC final and last night WC final (2019) unforgettable, bot are so painful
I am fan of Atherton voice 👌👌👌👌👌👌
I have been to Lord’s. It was an amazing experience!
I visited Lords for a tour, it was amazing!
Outstanding mike Atherton
Mike atherton great guy and batsman luckily manage to see his last few years
I want to be here, someday i vl surely.
great video athers!
Lords ground is the heaven...
I like the architecture of those pavilions with sculptures.
Nice share. Only ever been in long room once as guest of member. Superb
EXCELLENT AMAZING ....SUPERB HISTORY WITH GREAT STYLE OF MODERN ERA
I want visit Lord's cricket ground and i like england cricket team Michael artherton youre voice very nice and youre comantry also good !
Michael athorton one of the my favourite commentator
I've been lucky enough to visit the Long Room several times even though I'm not an MCC member. I was a member of Middlesex CCC for about 12 years, which meant I could access the pavilion on county championship match days. My wife & I have also attended a couple of dinners in the Long Room - it's an awesome venue ! 😎
I LOVE YOU! Please pass this to him #lords
That music is so much soothing.
Beautiful place
Loved it!
Fantastic
M A was great player of his time and great human being too
I don't know if your being serious lol, he is a bitter racist
@@ravlarrs4373 why do you say that?
I love lord's cricket ground and Mike arthuton Mike you just superb and your voice is absolutely great love from Indian
Never been inside Lords but walked past it once. Yep, i'm really that cool.
I really enjoyed that. Shame it wasn't longer.
Our pride Tamim Iqbal has done it 😍
I was there great day ill never forget
I was there great day ill never forget
a big cricket fan
A cricket lovers dream to watch a game of cricket in the lords long toom
pretty humble dressing room tbh
#CRICKET IS THE BEST 🏏❤❤
I love this. Just straighten the pitch and Lords is the best ground 👌
I wish to see a documentary movie on this ground, which should include the evolution of cricket, old scoreboards, paperworks, cricket kits, and details on all the famous names here. I can too imagine of some of the greats in various fields in London during 19th century, say scientists, philosophers, writers, musicians...to be playing or been associated to this ground.
Wow, that's increadable!
What atherton said is correct. Wicket has eased these days. I remember India playing in 1996 where the wicket used to do a lot.
I remember a joke years ago when he was playing. When Atherton fails England fail... When Atherton succeeds............. England fail.!
Interesting to see Gordon Greenidge on the England honours board, playing for the MCC.
probably world's most famous grounds ever
comparison of lords and m.c.g. and Eden garden
That portrait of Gooch!🤣
I want to visit...
Gent from my County Lancashire.
I wanna see the Lord's before end.
So beautiful ...
I wish I could be at lords with a mug of 🍻 and friends!!
Atherton's stats arnt the best you will see but there was a period in the mid 90s when England was a very poor team and he more or less kept England going and competing by him self.
I bet Graham Gooch wants to put a cricket bat around the head of whoever painted his picture.!
yeah, looks like a Peaky Blinder without his hat on !
Congratulations england team at LORD'S?
I always wondered how players walked out of the pavilion from those laminated floors... especially wearing spikes! Wouldn't they be sliding all over the place?
A Proper Lancastrian never Lies.
👌🏻👍🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🏏
Mike Atherton is my dad's gfs cousin
Who painted Gooch, Picasso?
🤣I thought exactly the same! Either Picasso or a five year old child!

#1 on my sporting bucket list ....don't know if I'll ever get to see it, but can only dream they'll let this humble convict through the gates one day...
that dressingroom is a bit under welming
i see Graeme Hicks name up there on the honours board
yes some of us remember the shabby awful way he was treated
Great asmr
Did an 8 year old paint that portrait of Graham Gooch?
actually it was painted by a ten year old...
...english sheepdog
If you look carefully, you can see the artist's name in the top right hand corner. I think it says David Blunkett.
Why I am watching Hollywood actor add
Pause at 3:30 for a LOL
too many English players got century against India .....
live with it
We have Weakest bowling attack on that period.
Ajit Agarkar made century on Lord's vs England ,and he was a medium Paser 😁
no 100's against the might aus teams in the 90's and 2000's
Sirf yade rh ge
I cant see much hundreds against Pakistan. Lol so many against India though :D
Ek toh qualify nhi kiya phir bhi aukaat dikhata hain
Here Tendulkar does not have a name
‘Mike Atherton was a true gentleman and a sportsman’, conveniently forgetting the sand, gravel or whatever that was in his pocket to roughen up one side of the cricket ball in an attempt to help England’s swing bowlers. Short memories some people have.....
Paul Beachcroft yep, unfortunately people do have short memories. Still a gentleman. Did he admit to it? I honestly can’t remember.
Yes Paul, he ‘coughed’ for it, but only after the TV cameras caught him red handed......
I thought the same!
Atherton didn’t get a 100 at lords being an English international test match opening batsman for 11 years?. Not good enough I’m sorry to say
Sachin kallis lara the so called legends have 0 century not good enough
That Gooch painting needs to be removed. Ridiculous!
Looks like somebody's GCSE art project.
Shane Warne, a convict and cheat. Should never ever been involved with Cricket.
People who call Dravid and Kallis slow and boring have never seen Mike Atherton. What a ridiculously slow player he was, hated to watch him. My favourite was Alec Stewart much more fluidic and confident.
Harsha Bhogle did better than him 🙇
*Did I hear CRICKET? This anachronistic colonial, goofy game should be phased out! This is how it can be done: ADIDAS, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche will donate 999 million footballs to Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. In 5-10 years one of these countries will qualify for the FIFA World Cup. And that will be the end of Le Cricket. "Sticky wicket, The Ashes" who needs it? Think about your children and protect them from cricket. Johnnie de Bangkok. You can get rid of the FUCKING Pounds (LBS!) and Helmut von Fahrenheit, as well. GO METRIC Think about your children....*
Your comment only reflect your archaic ideology and hatred for other sports. If sports has taught you these things in your life then you have been a bloody idiot
Frustrated with the game? Well, understandable. England invented the game, still about to win a single world cup. Rubbish chokers
@@PSKx13 who says he is English.
My very best wishes. I hope you're well again soon x
Gentlemen of English cricket like Alec Stewart
