As a Brit at the time I wasn’t too happy but looking back on it now it’s very funny. Seeing the old boys loose their dignity is always amusing. Good entertainment regardless of the outcome.
As an Indian, I have an incident to share. Something similar had happened earlier during the Nottingham Test in 2011 between India & England. Just before the Tea break, Ian Bell hit the last ball of the over for a boundary and assumed the ball has gone for four and walked out of his crease. The ball wasn't dead and it was collected and thrown back at stumps and Dhoni took off the bails while Bell was standing in the middle of the pitch chatting with his mate and wondering what just happened. The decision was given out by the umpires and the English crowd started to boo India for spirit of the cricket as if it was India's fault. Post the break, Dhoni withdrew his appeal on being advised by Sachin and Bell was recalled. The English crowd cheered and the English Media applauded India for maintaining the spirit of the cricket. Bell made 150+ runs and India lost that test match. Dhoni was bestowed with the spirit of the cricket award by ICC a decade later but what's the point of that. Spirit of the game shouldn't be prioritized over the laws of the game if it involves the recklessness of the players as it takes away the competitiveness. The players are professional and they should be aware of what they are doing. Well done to Australia for maintaining their stance.
Yes the law is clear, the ball is considered dead when it's in the hands of the wicket keeper... Weak umpiring. Imagine being English and defending this nonsense or an Aussie celebrating this desperately cheap behaviour, not that surprising I guess 😂
@@Profanity1@Profanity1 if you watch the keeper threw the ball as soon as he got it, Bairstow went on walkabout without looking, his own fault. @joedont9307 Instead of misquoting me and claiming I'm lying, why don't you look up the rules yourself? The ball is considered dead when it rests in the WK hands. I didn't say touch?
If the Carey did a misfield they might have sneaked a single as well right? Would that be called 'not good sportsmanship' if they sneaked a single? Absolutely not
Because at that time, the ball wasn't successfully collected by the keeper. It's called a Bye. A situation where the batter fails to make contact with the ball, and the keeper fails to collect it. In this situation, the ball was collected successfully and Bairstow wasn't taking a single or any kind of advantage. If Bairstow was already outside the crease, or they were planning to take a run, then keeper has full rights to take action.

Any englishman going to complain, bear in mind that england had ALREADY tried to do the same thing to marnus labuschagne in the first innings (or at least previously, like when aus was batting). Ironically it was the man himself Johnny Bairstow who attempted to do it. In true English spirit he missed the wicket by miles but even if he had hit it, Marny put his bat in his crease until he knew he was clear to leave it.
bairstows a goose and has thrown stumps down before in county matches when the batsman has walked out of his crease. and england did get a brand new cherry made of granite saving them from defeat a few tests later, no need to cry lol

The larger louts have no idea of the rules of the game! This surely was the low point of Lords. The behaviour in the Long Room was appalling and may lead to teams entering the oval by means other than the long room and that would be a pity! The rules of the game are ABSOLUTELY clear!
I felt for Johny the way he was shocked by what had happened. . . He had no clue. . . That is why awareness of the surrounding especially in cricket is so crucial! 😢

Because both of those things (all 3 of those things) required an umpires decision, which was abided by. The only one to have the grace to be sheepish about it was Stokes, who apologised, but the Kiwis have always been popular over here. As for most 'pathetic crowd', to what are you referring, as Australians adore going to England for the Ashes as the atmospheres are unique in world cricket.
If you leave your crease whilst in the process of playing a shot and the keeper takes the ball and stumps you then that's fine in my opinion but Bairstow had completed his shot/leave and placed his bat in his crease to show he didn't intend to take a run either - to any other reasonable cricket player this would indicate the ball is dead. This was just typical Aussie behaviour - morals akin to 'sandpaper' if you like. I think the same principle should be applied to run-outs too - if you're seeking a run or advantage when backing up the striker then you're fair game to be run-out.
Mildly infuriating, bat pad looking in the wrong direction for the umpire! Seriously though, I love this behind the scenes stuff, adds to the theatre of the game. Awesome stuff.
As a neutral person, I don't find any cheating by Australia this time. It is the responsibility of the batter to be aware of the signal of completion of over. In this scenario, the batter immediately walked out of the crease without checking the signal and waiting for few more seconds. The keeper did well, and appreciated for his level of concentration and focused on the game that he immediately sees the mistake made by the batter and did what is in the interest of his team. However, there should be a rule, at least, that the batter will not be consider out at the first time, can be called as "Warning", after that he will not get any mercy and straight be declared as run out. Love to hear any other opinion contrary to mine.
I’ll never agree that a warning should be given for the breach of a well established and clear law. Not from an umpire anyway. If a captain chooses to that’s his choice.
Moments like these stay iconic for a long time. Similar to how the Mathews time-out wicket during the last year's ODI WC, the only point people make is on the spirit of cricket. Personally, it's just a matter of whether you perceive the batsman's action to affect the bowling side in any way. In this instance, i would say it was a bit harsh on Bairstow but fair play to the Aussies.
I also hate the people that agree it was out but still say it wasn't in the spirit of the game. You're playing to win and if you're using a law that already exists then it's completely fair.
I have an issue with the inconsistency in how some incidents are portrayed differently from others, yes he threw it without taking any time (because he was prepared to do it, it wasn't completely instinctive), and it was the right thing to do ... just wandering out casually without any bother, from his point of view- he did give a small scratch each time he left the crease, but still is considered as loose. Now coming to Mankad, everyone in the field along with the bowler observes the non-striker leaving the crease causally and the bowler is prepared to lift bail off when he does it, now why do you have to give a warning after mankading, what is so extremely wrong in running out a batsman at the non-strikers end when the batsman walks out gaining an advantage also as opposed to Johnny's case. Why all the opposite drama here? Aussies did the right thing, to which Michael Vaughan and others agreed to without any issue and calling it dozy stuff from Bairstow, why a total opposite reaction to Mankad?... don't tell me that bowler has no intention of bowling and stuff, reiterating it... Carey didn't do it instinctively and was planned as it should it be..
This is why no one likes England, cry when its them but when they do it ahh unfortunate. Remember that world cup final against new Zealand where stokes hits the ball while running
This is cricket at its best . People often say test cricket or cricket in general is slow but just look at this till end , it’s a mind game you cannot be behind the opponent at any cost .❤
And all Broad will be remembered for is smashing it to first slip and not walking. The lack of self awareness of this flog to talk about sportsmanship is amazing
at the end of the day, you can say that about any batter who knicks it to keeper but umpire doesnt give it out... everyone always waits for umpires decision, and btw im english and i also agree bairstow was out before you try and throw that at me.

At the end of the day, it was out, but Broad's not wrong at 04:51🤣 Turning point in the series as well, Aus were rattled, as you can tell by their performance for the rest of the day. They were firmly second best for the remainder of the series.
@@Roz0007 Yep, it would be nice, we'll just have to settle for that T20 tournament thing (began with a 'W' I think) they won there a couple of years back, oh well. That was clearly obstructing the field. Stokes came into the path of the ball.

Pretending that drawing the ashes is somehow the same as winning them, while also pretending that England somehow weren't worthy world cup winners despite winning it completely within the rules, speaks volumes about your bias my friend
Imagine the celebrations if Stokes had pulled this one off(which he almost did)
I'm tipping there would be no withdrawn appeal or recall and the English press and pasty-faced MCC members would be hailing Stokes a genius.

Because both of those things (all 3 of those things) required an umpires decision, which was abided by. The only one to have the grace to be sheepish about it was Stokes, who apologised, but the Kiwis have always been popular over here.

It was Bairstow's mistake all along
If you leave your crease whilst in the process of playing a shot and the keeper takes the ball and stumps you then that's fine in my opinion but Bairstow had completed his shot/leave and placed his bat in his crease to show he didn't intend to take a run either - to any other reasonable cricket player this would indicate the ball is dead. This was just typical Aussie behaviour - morals akin to 'sandpaper' if you like. I think the same principle should be applied to run-outs too - if you're seeking a run or advantage when backing up the striker then you're fair game to be run-out.
I personally think this moment cost Australia an ashes win. Totally changed the mood over here, and galvanised them.
I think so too, however if Carey didn't stump Bairstow then we probably would've lost the came and even the series.

Not cheating, wait til over is called. Simple as that, this is coming from an English fan.
I also hate the people that agree it was out but still say it wasn't in the spirit of the game. You're playing to win and if you're using a law that already exists then it's completely fair.

The passion and drama was amazing regardless of what team you support - test cricket felt well and truly alive
