  • Back to workin on the 1979 ford courier, 4x4, step side, I did a bunch of research online, and didn’t come up with much trying to find out what running gear was used on this truck, I’m hoping some of you will be able to help me figure out what was used under this thing to make it 4x4. I’m guessing Jeep or Toyota running gear.

When I was a kid my parents bought a 1979 Ford courier brahma 4x4 conversion with the California stepside like the one in your video, it's my understanding that there were a couple of companies taking new trucks and putting the Dana parts similar to jeep under them they were the reason Toyota,Datsun started making the ever so popular 4x4 trucks . Sasquatch was one other named truck conversion. Think the company was out of Shelton Washington. Not a lot of info out there I have found , not sure where the stepside beds were made and put on.

Since I did not think I would be much help from memory , I googled your 1979 ford courier 4x4 . I found a website called blue oval trucks which showcased 1972 - 1982 ford courier 4x4 trucks . I haven’t seen one of these in ages / ions . Never seen a four by version . I was thrown for a loop too from your video of the undercarriage . No doubt , this is clearly a conversion . Difficult to say this is the work of the company the website mentions as some of THIS trucks shock mounts and other supports are somewhat crude but I will say that whomever did this conversion did a solid job . They definitely weren’t a shoemaker . They knew their stuff . Looks fairly pro , I think . I tried to look at the front axle on my ‘73 CJ5 and will say the differential carrier is similar to my open knuckle Dana 30 but there are differences such as an added pinion snubber . The steering drag link on your truck isn’t in the same place as my CJ which is on the front right steering knuckle outer mounting hole , hence the conversion . Without a measurement across the leaf spring mounts , we couldn’t say if it’s even spec’s for a jeep ? It really appears as per the article the drivetrain was built for this truck which was a takeoff of Toyota and Mazda as others have posted here . Hope you can find the website I did , it’s interesting and may be helpful . It will definitely give insight as to the build and hopefully parts when it comes to tracking down replacement parts . Hope this helps and will say this is one interesting and the foundation to future build of you decide to go with a stronger engine , should you decide to upgrade .
I’m guessing the engine and transmission are close to stock of a basic ford courier . The trans looks like the ones used in the early mini trucks and something like the Peugeot BA - 10 that either wranglers or XJ’s had ? The transfer case looks purely built for this truck conversion , at a guess , and may have been used on other conversions as well . This truck looks purpose built rather than just a 4x4 toy . It’s unique and very interesting , at the least . We just know your bugging to get it into the dirt and “ test “ on it . Be looking forward to that for you too .

@@Rustwrangler make sure that you get a quart of black rust olem paint and spray paint the whole underside chassis, floor boards , underneath the bed every couple years, truck will last forever especally if you keep a tight, strict matainance schedule on oil changes for the engine, transfer case, rear end oil, air filter gasoline filter, tune ups, the works! She's a beautiful little truck, I favor Ford cars and trucks especally the smaller trucks with 4 cylinder engines in them.

I believe the winged bird logo emblem is off of a mid-1950s Chrysler Imperial, possibly later. I am pretty sure that Imperials had this logo up until the 70s.

Take a toothbrush and go to the gauges to clean them up good. With Sprayaway!! That stuff is awesome. My deddy had a Courier when I was little and I hadn't seen thr interior of one in ages and right when you panned to the gauges I instantly went back to being 4 years old riding shotgun with him. I'm crying writing this to you cause I lost my deddy July 9th 2021 and I am still grieving over him. I haven't stopped. He took me everywhere with him. He taught me how to drive a stick shift. He used to get me to shift the gears in that little truck for him. He would tell me "Gimmie 1st, now gimmie 2nd, alright now gimmie 3rd, alright putter in 4th!! OK put it back in 1st" when we were stopped. And I was little. And I did it. He let me shift gears for him. I miss that little truck. My deddy bought a 84 Ranger after that Courier and I ended up with that truck and I traded that on a brand new 95 Ranger at the time a month before I graduated High School. I regretted that as well cause we made alot of memories in that truck. Young and stupid I was and now I'm 46 and I'm living with alot of that regret and just wishing I could tell him how sorry I am for all the stupid things I ever did. Anyone out there that reads this that still has your deddy and truly loves him? AFTER YOU READ THIS, PICK UP YOUR PHONE, OR GO AND SEE HIM AND HAVE A GOOD LONG TALK WITH HIM. TELL HIM YOU LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND THANK HIM FOR BEING IN YOUR LIFE. TELL HIM YOURE SORRY FOR PUTTING HIM THROUGH WHAT YOU PROBABLY PUT HIM THROUGH IN YOUR TEENAGE YEARS. ASK HIM TO FORGIVE YOU AND JUST HUG HIM AND KISS HIM ON THE CHEEK AND JUST ENJOY HIS ARMS WRAPPED AROUND YOU CAUSE I WISH I COULD FEEL MY DEDDYS ARMS WRAPPED AROUND ME RIGHT NOW 😢 I wrote that in caps for a reason. Please do it cause everyday since July 9th I have agonized and wished I could have had one last meaningful talk with my deddy and just told him all the things I wanted to get out to him. I miss him so much!!!

Low Range or Low Manufacturing was a company I remember back in the late 70s to early 80d that did 4x4 conversions. Most used Jeep axles.

doughboy1966 But the only Jeeps that had 6 lugs were the full size Jeep Grand Wagoneer's. And their axles would be way to wide for this truck.

It’s either Masada because they made the courier or a Jeep Wolverine kit but more likely Mazda. A guy I went to school with when I was a teenager had one.

Drivers Drop Dana 30 from early Ford Bronco with Wagoneer or GM 6 lug dana 44 outer axle stubs. T case is a " Specialized Transfer case " aluminum housing using a dana Model 20 transfer case gears bearings and shafts . The unput gear and front axle output gear locations are simply just swapped from passenger side front axle drive dana model 20 transfer case found in thousands of Jeep Cjs , Wagoneer, commandos and IH Scouts. The transmission to transfer case adapter housing and transfer case cast aluminum housings were used by a company that converted late 70s Ford Courier pickups from 2 to 4 wheel drive " Brahma " pickups in SoCal. The Courier in the video doesnt look like a actual " Brahma " conversion. But it is using parts from a factory conversion " Brahma " Courier . The shock mounts , leaf springs suspension to frame mounts are very " Homebuilt " looking not something a professional conversion shop would do. The rear differential appears to be a early Toyota 4 wheel drive rear differential swapped into the Courier. The Stepside bed wasnt a difficult to procure item at the time the 4x4 conversions were being built. There were many small custom fiberglass vehicle body parts, custom vehicle conversion parts manufacturers all over the place in the 70s and 80s. Southern California especially was just overflowing with custom vehicle parts and conversion parts manufacturing companies back then.

A Ford Ranger driveline would of been the easiest direct bolt on, The transmission looks like a Mazda (used in the Ranger 2wheel and 4x4 variants)and it would bolt right into the 2.3L with no issues of clearance (since the couriers was a rebadged Mazda). I would imagine a jeep Cherokee front axle would fit in the front quite nicely (The rangers had a Dana 28 or 35 Independent front axle).

I'm thinking it's Toyota running gear .Definitely not Jeep axles. A Jeep CJ-5 would have axles narrow enough for this but they never came with 6 lug nuts. Unless somebody used axles from a full size Jeep Grand Wagoneer and they would be way to wide for this truck.
