Great instructional video. You’re a good teacher. And I appreciate that you dumbed it down for those of us who have never done it. I’m 53. This video in conjunction with the owners manual made it super easy to change the oil on my '03 Sporty. This was the first oil change I've ever done myself and although it took me longer than I would have liked, the video content was thorough and concise. Thanks!

This was the perfect video that motivated me to “give it a go” on my Sporty. I was successful first time without any motorcycle leaks or spills. I made sure I had all the right tools, equipment and material. I even bought a $130 Pittsburgh 1500lbs motorcycle lift from Harbor Freight that also worked out great and was straightforward to setup and use. Great video, made it happen for me, no more running to/from the dealer for oil and filter changes for me now!

Hi Robert - question for you - i've been avoiding buying the jack from HF because some of the reviews say it doesn't fit the sporty... any issues with the span of the "jack forks" or the vertical height on your Sporty? Overall thoughts on that Pittsburgh jack? Thanks in advance for your time!

I just got my first motorcycle ever. It's a 99 Sportster 883 hugger. I've worked on cars but I've never changed the oil on a motorcycle. This was exactly what I needed to know. Took out any questions I thought I may have
Edit: I used to work for Napa and I always recommended the mobile one V-Twin oil. From everything I learned from the old timers it's just worth spending the extra money. You're saving so much as is doing it yourself. Spend the couple bucks get the good stuff

I've got a stripped primary fill bolt. Prev owner abandoned for 5 yrs.. Is there anywhere else to fill it from, ie clutch cover? I'm considering turning the bike on its side and filling into the drain plug.. (it's already drained, so too late to warm it up or take it anywhere). Any ideas appreciated!!

@@mikewmhllc1660get you what they call an “easy out” kit. Should come with some drill bits and a bit that has reverse threads on it. Drill a small hole in the center just deep enough for the easy out (extractor) to fit in about a quarter of the way and turn it out to the left. Should come out no problem. I recommend researching a video or some kind of instruction on the use of an easy out of you’ve never done it but it’s pretty straight forward.

Mine is a 2002. After completely draining it I fill about 2.5 qt ride it around for a day or so or roughly 20 miles then let it completely cool down over night. That extra half quart usually puts it right under the top line on the dip stick. You have to take in to account the oil that is gonna drain out of the lines and when you ride it around it works the air out.

Remember do not..repeat DO NOT torque your primary drain plug to more than 16lb foot lbs. In my first Sporster I didn't know sh#@ about HD aluminum primary cases and tightened it so much I stripped the threads and ruined my case. Once you do that it's either replace the entire case $1,500+ job or no matter what else you do your damaged case is going to leak oil for the rest of it's life.

Just to make sure, you are aware I hope that there are oils designed and sold specifically for Sportster primary's right? The cover you designated as the fill point is the primary chain inspection cover, not sure that it matters but you only need to put in about 32oz. you could pop off the derby cover and use that as the fill point and it wouldn't leak if you don't overfill...The 20w50 is from my limited knowledge the correct oil for the engine however...I'll admit I just use basic HD motorcycle oil, not Rotella or anything else...sometimes I'm a dumbass and we don't need to think too much about that particular fact. lol

while I'm here I guess I'll give some easy tips to people who might not know otherwise. HD recommends you check the oil on Sportsters and softails while it's hot and the bike is upright. All other HD models should be checked on the kickstand or "jiffy stand"... on my sporty the marks on the dipstick are pretty small but it's also a temp gauge. probably not stock but I'm not overly concerned

He did not say the inspection cover as the fill point . re watch the video he said the derby cover will show the correct level where it sets. the whole point is it is easier to fill at the inspection cover than removing the derby cover. and it only takes one quart.

Don’t you have to push down then up when checking the primary chain?

Be sure to always install a new rubber O ring on the drain plug.

Helpful video thanks! From what I understand you want to check primary chain tension several places in the chain. And don't drop that dipstick, Harley thinks they're made of gold...

You are correct. Need to rotate it to check tension in multiple spots. Just figured I'd make a separate video on it.
