  • The Hyliion Hypertruck ERX powertrain is a next-generation electric range extender for Class 8 semi-trucks that delivers an improved operational experience, lower cost of ownership and the performance fleets need, all while reducing carbon emissions.
    Capable of utilizing the expansive network of CNG stations across North America thanks to its onboard natural gas generator, the Hypertruck ERX system enables fleets to transform their operations, without the limitations of pure BEV solutions that rely solely on underdeveloped grid power.
    With an unrivaled total range of up to 1,000 miles-including up to 75 miles of all-electric range-the Hypertruck ERX powertrain features a robust software system that allows for remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates, helping to keep trucks on the road by eliminating unplanned service needs.
    The Hypertruck ERX system is charting a new, pragmatic path to fleet electrification. To learn more, visit: bit.ly/3O3mpvP

    Considering a BEV charging complex at a truck stop will probably need its own combined cycle peaker plant, this is a great solution, gotta push that RNG / carbon negative message as much as possible though especially as carbon credits become more of thing for bigger corporations. Like even going so far as facilitating RNG purchase contracts with truck stops and corporate fleet fueling stations. It's the master stroke Tesla did with their supercharger network. Without providing an easy spoon fed "fueling" solution they would have probably failed like Toyota did with their H2 cars.

    • @Mentaculus42
      @Mentaculus42 Год назад

      One can only hope so, BUT the bureaucrats in California just hate anything that has to do with methane, even if it is carbon negative RNG. Fortunately the truck got MOST of the California subsidies at this time but don’t expect that to last forever. Fortunately they have a plan B and C as the California bureaucrats keep pushing their suboptimal “winning solutions” into the real world.

      Has Toyota FAILED yet with hydrogen in trucks as of this time? Hydrogen for cars never made any sense, but their is a use case for it in a segment of the truck market and Toyota is still serious about hydrogen, but just not as much now that a major internal advocate has moved on.

      It is also great that you have an additional option to plug it in if you wish.
      I like the cost of ownership of an ERX as well as the incentives fleets get in return. It makes it so much cheaper to own overall. The acceleration and ride comfort are also impressive. What makes it a game changer is no longer having range anxiety with an electric truck-- just get a hyliiin hypertruck!

    Good solution real world 2024 for long haul, nice rig. Natural gas is better than diesel for fumes as a generator. Not zero emmisions but can operate battery alone also. Didnt hear the pure EV range but smaller battery pack than full BEV Class 8.

    The "unique" accessory components listed at 1:36 are different from the corresponding components in a conventionally powered truck, but are not unique to Hyliion. For instance, an electrically powered steering assist pump is used in hybrid and EV trucks, and several brands are in production and available.

    How exactly is it net negative when the RNG is combusted and CO2 still emitted? Best it can be is net neutral (with RNG only), not negative. Unless it has a CCS system on board, which it doesn’t.

    • @jaker3151
      @jaker3151 Год назад +1

      RNG is produced by capturing methane gas from landfills, wastewater treatment plants, livestock farms, etc. By capturing the methane and burning it instead of just letting it go into the atmosphere less greenhouses gases (carbon emissions) are released. Methane and CO2 are both carbon compounds. But methane is more than 25 times more potent than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere. If you burn methane it is converted into less damaging CO2 and water. Hence when you burn RNG there is a reduction (net negative) in carbon emissions. So it's not that the truck produces no emissions but the truck, by burning RNG, is helping to reduce the release of more damaging gases into the atmosphere. Hope that makes sense.

    • @brianb-p6586
      @brianb-p6586 10 месяцев назад

      I agree - this is politics and marketing nonsense, not physical reality.
      My guess is that they are assuming that RNG is all methane captured from sources (such as waste landfill and sewage facilities) that would otherwise emit it to the atmosphere, and the global warming potential (GWP) of the products of combustion are lower than that of the methane itself, so the net effect of capturing and burning it is a reduction in global warming potential.
      For instance, burning one ton of methane produces 3.7 tons of carbon dioxide, but if that ton of methane is 25 times worse (in GWP) than a ton of carbon dioxide, then the ton of methane is almost 7 times as bad as the products of burning it. You could just flare off methane, gaining no energy from it at all and capturing none of the carbon dioxide, and it would be better than letting it vent to the atmosphere.

      Better than diesel its a good trade off for the long haulers 2024. Yes the leaky "natural" gas infrastructure worldwide is a problem but its better than burning diesel .And just using a when needed generator means less fuel also.Alot of trucking can be BEV but the long haulers arent buying it yet. This is plausible today wish they got a tax break.

      The traditional CNG trucks can do up to 600 miles on a fill if they have the optional extra CNG tanks. The interesting thing is they have basically the same CNG engine. The US only has a few certified CNG truck engines. Cummins is working on a new series.
