    A great watch, thanks Oscar. A real sense of the railway developing, with that wonderful power centre and multiple trains running. When I started in the 60's I ran my train set with a 'transformer - I can't remember using the word 'controller' at the time - old school terminology perhaps. And thanks for not editing out the mishaps, it's all part of the experience ! Brilliant fun.

    these power centres and control centres are beautiful. I have using the little R965 controllers that come with basic trains sets, My first loco was a Parcels yard shunter class 08, it will go round the track all day no problem, but when I put my Lima locos on the track they do 2-3 circuits then Die EVERY SINGLE TIME. And I am getting really hacked off with this madness, so I have just bought a Gaugemaster Dual M so hopefully when it arrives this is should do the trick. But I have seen these old Hornby control centres for sale, now I know they work, I will think about buying one or two in the future, I mean they just look Great and do the job perfectly. Got to say thanks for showing this. 😃😃❤

    Thank you for this morning's viewing! I used to use a 910 controller when I was quite young, in the early 80s, and found it nice to use. I use a HM Duette today as I like the way it can control 2 tracks with one unit. That said, it is very neat how the Hornby controllers bank together with the points levers on the top. All the best. Gord :-)

      Good morning Gord, great to hear you had the opportunity to use one of these now vintage controllers they defiantly look the part. I think the H&M stuff is great and will not be letting mine go any time soon. However, being curious apart from playing with these pretty Hornby Power Units I have found myself researching other options including some up to date equipment.

    Another blast from the past , thoroughly enjoyable video . I remember very well getting the 1973 catalogue, one of my favourites, at Model Rail Scotland in the MacLellan Galleries in Glasgow . In some ways it seems like yesterday. I remember the bin men were on strike , so on way we had dumped our refuse at the dump! It shows the power of the catalogue as I had just viewed controllers as something I just needed to run trains . Now marketed properly I wanted a “Control Centre” . It was Feb 1975 before I needed to replace one of my old Triang grey controllers that had expired . Off I went to Argyle models with my birthday money ready to buy , but disaster.......they didn’t have any ! I needed a controller so the guy persuaded me to buy a Clipper which was a better controller he said. It probably was and I still have it along with one of your R910s I got next year. But it didn’t look like a control centre . It looked quite utilitarian in fact and even now I feel that pang of disappointment remembering buying a new controller even though they’ve now served me faithfully for 46 years!

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад +1

      Good afternoon Russel thanks again for watching and taking the time to share those memories and about the control units. It's very much appreciated. I think there must be similar technologies at work in both the Hornby and the H&M units however the Hornby units don't have the same feel of build quality and the control/ power delivery is not as reassuring as the H&M clippers. But they are not miles apart possible I think when new the Hornby unis would have had much more pleasing action with its switchgear. But all great fun and they look terrific with the switches mounted on top, I could not resist giving them a go.
      Take care.

    Hi Oscar, your panel with those huge glowing green lights and knobs looks reminiscent of a 1970s Russian Nuclear power station!!! I can well recommend the ‘Chernobyl’ mini series if you haven’t seen it yet!
    I was always a Hammett & Morgan owner and those Clippers and Duettes gave brilliant service- I never understood the ‘half wave’ function as I just wanted my locos to go as fast as possible!
    I have a Zero One though in the loft still with an APT that has an original chip! I like the ‘inertia’ braking on this but it seemed to turn some of my older models into poor runners and it was difficult to convert Lima locos. Way ahead of its time though but practically useless- a bit like the real APT!
    The best model controller I have ever seen was a tramway layout at a show that used a genuine controller from a real tram! Must’ve weighed a ton.
    Best wishes Ned

      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад +1

      Good morning Ned your right the big green lamp and the grey and chromed effect finish do have that look about them, hopefully, no launch any time soon. These Hornby power units defiantly don't have the same quality of build or reassuring and consistent feel when in use compared to the H&M equipment I have so I don't think I will be letting that go any time soon. Out of curiosity, I have been considering a few other options for control over the last few months which may be quite good fun.

    Hi Oscar,
    Very impressive bank of controllers and switches. I have a 900 in black plastic with sticky on label for the graphics, not a patch on the earlier version. It looks like they mounted a huge economy drive on it, inside gubbins would probably be the same.
    Whilst the H&M controllers are recognised as reliable old workhorses, the line up that you have is very pleasing to the eye.
    Another bit of Sunday morning therapy. 👍

      Hi Gordon, great to hear you have the later version, I think as you say the insides are probably very similar to the earlier grey version. I began to put these in on the layout back in early January so have had quite a bit of time with them now. Compared to H&M Clippers I have the build quality, control and power delivery is not as reassuring as the H&M equipment but they are not miles apart. All good fun and they look great.

    Gosh, I had to watch this twice to get my head around the complications. I suppose it must be much easier when you are not filming it at the same time. I began to wonder if you need one of those boards with lights showing which way all the points are set. Then I thought about the wiring complications, maybe not such a good idea :-) The controllers are a very neat package with the point levers in clear view. It must make it much easier to operate. Enjoyable and informative as always 😊👍

    Hello Oscar, those controllers really look good arranged with the point switches etc above. It is interesting they feature a half wave switch like the H & M Clippers, great for slower running but definitely suits some locos better than others. It's funny how changing the properties of the rectified D.C can cause some motors to heat. I notice both the mains units seem to deliver a fair power output. I look forward to seeing how you rate these in the long run. Great video. All the best to you

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад +1

      Good morning Mr Snooze, I could not resist these controls as they look so great, the quality of build and control of power delivery is not quite as reassuring or precise as the H&M clippers. I think having used these on the layout since early January now the clippers do offer a more consistent user experience. I have become accustomed to the switch to change direction now, personally, I think my preference is for the centre off system, of course, that's no guarantee of having the toy trains running in the intended direction! it's all good fun take care.

      Good afternoon John, I'm unsure about the export of this range there is mention in Pat Hammonds book that covers this period of a unit RT42P produced local in Canada for that market and a mention of delays in the introduction of later power controllers product due to changing EEC legislation and a fair bit about the complex changes in the company involved in marketing and licensing Hornby / Tri-ang Hornby/ Rovex products in Australia in the 70s but no direct reference that I can see so far to these power units.

    That stacked set of control units in the catalogue looked impressive, I wonder how practical it might have been, or just a salesman's fantasy picture! I always wondered why the direction control rockers were up and down rather than horizontal which may have been more intuitive, presumably design driven by appearance, they are very attractive units as they are. We shall hold you to the turntable promise:-)

    Hello Oscar. That certainly is a smart looking control system. I like the expandability of it. Could you mark the direction switches for clockwise and anti-clockwise running? Forwards and reverse are interchangeable depending on which way the train is facing but clockwise and anticlockwise remain constant. That is the basis of my direction control. Super Sunday morning video once more. Cheers, David.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад

      Good morning David thanks again for watching. I thought they looked pretty good as a range of controllers with some interesting design features built-in must have been quite a bit of research and development bringing them into the range. I very much like the integration of the switches feature. The direction thing has been an ongoing problem for me with the model railway for as long as I can remember more so when using a camera. With the H&M stuff, I had it all set on the older layouts and this one to run clockwise when the control was rotated clockwise and run anticlockwise when rotated anticlockwise and same with the turntable. I have these new/old Hornby Power Units set in the same manner but the toggle switches are marked Normal = clockwise on the track and Reverse = anticlockwise on the track but in each instance, the control is rotated clockwise to get power. Having installed these units in early January I can say that I have now become more accustomed to using the toggle switches to achieve a change in direction rather than the centre off system employed on the H&M Clippers. Even with that system, it's all too easy to make occasional mistakes I find that having the trains running around me is great and mistakes are now minimal when playing with the railway. However, trying to use a camera and talk plus remember what the plan was along with the control of just one group of models is quite a complex set of tasks to bring together. I have to admit I’m finding it quite difficult and frequently make mistakes with all aspects of controlling speed and direction not only of the models but the camera also as well as the point work but having said this I’m having great fun and this leading me to explore some other options which I’m very much looking forward to. These Hornby Power Units don’t suit all models and the quality of build and control and power delivery is not as reassuring as the H&M clippers but they also don’t suit all models. Possibly no one design of Power control/delivery unit or system can.
      Thanks again for watching take care.

      Good morning Clive the hand controllers sound like a great idea, its something I had been thinking about for this layout now it's this size and it would be very useful when making video. I have been doing some research into other more up to date control systems that may be able to integrate this feature and are robust enough for the items in my collection. But nothing looks as good as these early 70s designed units.

      Good morning Jonathan great to har you enjoyed the video this Y point has always been unreliable with one motor and tends to stick I've adjusted the various parts with no noticeable improvement, I'm reluctant to take off one of the springs to see if it solves the problem as I only have the one steel Y point and they seem to be hard to find so far. It does not even feel that heavy to switch by hand, also tried several different motors but remains unreliable. Works perfectly with a pair of motors! Hopefully, I will get hold of a replacement shortly to compare.

Seeing those Cuneo period catalogues brings back so many fond childhood memories , will you be adding the fencing/ Minic Motorway street lights to your R408U turntable ? Always thought those embellishments set it apart from any other in the company’s history..

      Glad you enjoyed it, good question about the fence and the lamps! I only haven't put them in so far as I'm still fiddling with that whole area and I don't want to damage them any further. Sadly one of the street lamps had lost is little fixing spigot before it came to be mine. I have fixed this with a wire, but I'm very conscious of how fragile they are.
      Thanks agin take care.

    Those controllers look good. Wouldn't think they were 50 years old. I like the interconnectability. Would it be possible to wire in a diode on your layout plan with each line so you could see the route a train would take when you switched the point lever.

    There is something special about these classic models.
    Have you had these since you were young, or have you just managed to find them over time second hand? I would love to start collecting some of these myself, but have no idea where to start. :)

      Good going Brendan, sadly I've had none of these items from childhood. I have collected them over the last few years. I did have quite a few Tri-ang and Hornby Railways items as a child but they vanished over time.

    Morning Oscar. WOW 😄 the leavers look fantastic on top of your new controllers. The wires look great all neat and tidy 👍🏻 Have you made the point leaver out for reverse and in for normal? It looked like it when see you operate them 😂 Take care cheers Stevie 😎

    A very interesting video Oscar, those controllers look very well thought out design wise, how well do they stack up against the modern ones from Guagemaster ETC.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад +1

      Good morning, Rob, I think they must have put quite a bit of effort into introducing these control units to the range. The build quality, control of power delivery is not quite as reassuring as the H&M clippers but not miles apart. At present, I have nothing modern to compare these or the H&M units with. They just look so good with the railway especially with leaver frame switches mounted on top and are at a price point where it seemed daft not to give them a go, a feeble excuse! I have for some time now been thinking about something a little more up to date but robust enough to deal with the requirements of the items in my collection. I've been looking into the more robust Morley units they also have that great handheld option which would a great benefit now my railway has grown. Good information seems to be hard to come by sadly.
      Thank again take care.

    Awesome now tell me surface mount I think they look awesome and I know I’m in the minority. Jury is still out in my current build wanted to wire in tube BUT I must ask reliability with these how have they been and are yours just plug and play straight on with the point spring left in ?

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад

      Hi yes the springs have been left in and have been very reliable on this layout and the last.

    Fascinating stuff. Are those Hornby R905 later versions of H&M clippers? I seem to remember Simon Koehler used to work for H%M then he transferred to Hornby when H&M became a part of Hornby. To avoid mistakes setting the route, might I suggest you give your point switches names such as "Down Main", "Up branch", as well as numbers? Thanks for uploading.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад

      Hi I think there is a strong influence from H&M in these controls, however they are not as well made as the H&M equipment which I think lets them down with the use of lower quality switch gear.
      Tanks again take care.

    Hi Oscar. I know you mentioned it long ago now, but can you remind me why you needed 2 point motors for the Y point? Kind regards Gary

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 года назад

      Good morning Gary, it's very unreliable with the one motor. Fiddled endlessly before fitting but I'm reluctant to take off one of the springs to see if it solves the problem as I only have the one steel Y point and they seem to be hard to find so far. It does not even feel that heavy to switch by hand, also tried several different motors but remains unreliable. Works perfectly with a pair of motors! Hopefully, I will get hold of a replacement shortly to compare.
      Thanks again take care.

    On the big railways, we refer to levers in the frame (ie pushed away from you) as ‘normal’ , and out of the frame as ‘reversed’. This then relates to the actual position of the points as normal, or reversed. Normal would be where the line is expect to run in normal service. There is a way to change your paper layout diagram to show the ‘normal’ position of the points by putting a break in the line which is reversed. You should then be able to read your diagram much quicker and know exactly which position the lever should be in without looking at the track. I wish I could post a picture to show it better.

      Good morning Andrew, yes operator error is always embarrassing but all part of the fun. It's defiantly easier to put thing right on this layout than the last as access is so much better overall and it's less densely populated with catenary.
