My Dad was a lineman in the Midwest for 35 years. He walked in 5 minutes late to work one morning and his boss asked him why he was late. He explained that Wichita Lineman came on the radio as he was pulling in. The whole crew nodded approvingly and his boss said it was an acceptable excuse. Glen Cambell was such a legend.

I am an African American grandmother. I was living in Dallas, Texas, 1968, and I was 20, when this was released. The first time I heard this on the radio....I just couldn't get enough of it! It was so melodic, so heart-wrenching.....and I just LOVE minor chords within a song. This was not being played on the R&B station, KNOK, at the time; so I would hunt through all the channels until I found a Country Western Station, or POP station so I could hear this gem. I have never forgotten this song. It tells such a beautiful story of love. RIP Mr. Campbell, from one 'crossover sister.'

Good music is UNIVERSAL. I am a 50 year old Black woman that grew up in Williamsburg, VA. My dad loved Patti Page and my mom loved Hank Williams and Alan Jackson. They listened to country music as well as Aretha, Sam Cook and Johnny Mathis. I am so thankful I can appreciate all music because my parents exposed me to a wide variety. When Glen Campbell came on the radio my parents would sing along. One of my best memories is of the three of us singing Wichita Lineman together and on key (smile). I miss the music of my youth so very much.

High School kids weren't listening to him then -- though as a grade schooler I saw his variety show. Luckily I had much older parents & adult siblings so I was exposed to lots of different music, even Hank Williams Sr. In 6th grade, I bought Johnny Cash's live San Quentin album.

I didn't know who he was, so I kept in mind that magic line - and I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time - until I got home and googled it. What a fortunate discovery. Knowing about his condition, I can't help being grateful for what he is leaving us with: all the emotions and memories of a time where songwriting was a much more thoughtful, heartfelt and inherently artistic act than it is today.

Yes, I was a 9 or 10 year old when I heard this. I recorded the radio on an old new fangled cassette recorder. I loved this song then and still do. "I'm Glen Campbell and I'm happy to be here", my favorite line in this video. He truly was.......

The Wrecking Crew were unique. A group of world class session musicians that will never be repeated. Most 1960 -70 recording artists owe their success to theses amazing players. Just thinking of all the hit records the Wrecking Crew played on without any fanfare, brings a lump to my throat.

Just talked about him on the news. I think the family had to put him
under some kind of full time care now. There was a female and male
talking about him. Idk if children or Niece and Nephew. I was asleep and
part of one of his songs woke me up. Love Glen Campbells music. Anyway
the reporter asked if he still plays the guitar and the male said he has
a couple guitars in his room and can still play better than him on a
      bad day. Lol.
Ok just read up on him. He is a resident at Nashville
Memory Care and in the final stages of Alzheimers. So sad. We just lost
      Gene Wilder to it.
I will confess though, this is my favorite Glen
Campbell song. Driving to the farm with Dad as a kid in the seventies
and this song came on. I fell in love with it then. It always reminds me
of that memory and my childhood.
And you are right, Glen is forever.

    • @soaringvulture
      @soaringvulture 8 лет назад +2

I have to love that line "can still play better than him on a bad day". It has the sadness of Glen's condition and the blazing glory of Glen's ability. We are all frail and die but some of us make life worthwhile.

I remember listening to this song on the car radio when I was just a very little child, maybe 5 or 6 and it was a song that to this very day is one of my personal all-time favorites. I will be 60 in February and it’s funny how music can immediately transport you right back to that place and time; for me it’s long 12 hour road trips in the family car with my 4 older sisters, Mommy and Daddy, (yes, I’m southern) on a visit to my grandparents house. My parents are both gone now and 1 beautiful sister, too, but just for the few minutes of listening, they are all right here beside me and all is right with my world! Thank you Mr Campbell for helping keep my memories alive and to all the great music and musicians that truly ARE the soundtrack to our lives!

Same for me - I was about 12 or so, and heard this while my family was driving across AZ on our way back to California. It was right at dusk, when the old AM stations would cut back their power, and this came on right before you could not get anything further from that station. Hearing this song takes me right back to being out in the middle of nowhere just after sunset. Wow.
